IPL 2024: AB de Villiers reveals being emotional on Yuzvendra Chahal leaving RCB

AB de Villiers, former Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star batter, opened up on the time when ace spinner Yuzvendra Chahal departed from the Bengaluru franchise. Ahead of the mega auction in 2022, Chahal wasn't retained by the three-time finalists and was eventuallybought by the Rajasthan Royals (RR). For RR, Chahal has been in splendid form and recently became the first-ever bowler to claim 200 IPL wickets during his side's nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in match 38 of IPL 2024, in Jaipur.

De Villiers lauded Chahal for his historic achievement recently and also slammed RCB team management's decision to not retain the spinner.Chahal remains RCB's highest wicket-taker to date, claiming 139 scalpsat an impressive economy rate of 7.58 from 2014-2021. The South African legend further revealed that he was emotional when Chahal left the franchise, where his void his felt in current times as well.

On his YouTube channel, ABD said, "Double hundred for Yuzi (Yuzvendra Chahal) with a ball in hand in the IPL. He's the first guy to reach 200 wickets, and the most impressive thing about this (is) it is in 152 innings. RCB let him go… I've mentioned this before: a heartbreaking moment when he left RCB. He was part of the furniture there and also the best bowler. It was crazy that he got left out of that side."

He further added, "It's not easy to watch him go to 200 wickets…the most successful bowler of all time in the IPL, and with him not being at RCB. He's been a huge addition to that RR squad, has done fantastically well for them and part of the success of this season for them."

Chahal has 200 IPL wickets in 153 matches at an average of 21.61. In addition, the 33-year-oldhasso far claimed 61 wicketsfor RR in just 39 games and is one of skipper Sanju Samson's go-to-bowler. Talking about his RCB days, he formed a memorable bond with Virat Kohli and De Villiers from 2014-21 and was a vital cog in their squad.

At present, Chahal-starrer RR are at the top in the IPL 2024 points table, with 14 points in 8 games. Thespinner is at the second spot in terms of most wickets in the ongoing edition, with 13 scalps (joint-most with table-topper Jasprit Bumrah).

Meanwhile, Kohli's RCB are at the bottom with seven defeats from equal number of encounters.
