On Day 3 of the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval, Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane made a remarkable comeback. After being dropped from the Sri Lanka Test series in March 2022, Rahane played his first match for India and emerged as the highest scorer for his team in London.

Despite concerns about India's performance, Rahane's knock of 89, along with the support of Shardul Thakur, helped the team avoid a follow-on. During his innings, former Australia coach Justin Langer revealed an interesting detail about the role of Steve Waugh in Rahane's calm and composed approach.

Langer shared a conversation he had with Steve Waugh during the Border-Gavaskar Test series in 2021/22. Waugh, the former Australian captain, disclosed that he had been having conversations with Rahane, possibly mentoring him leading up to that series. Langer, who was the head coach of Australia at the time, found this revelation unsettling because it foreshadowed the nightmare he experienced later in the series. Rahane, despite leading an injury-plagued and Kohli-less Indian side, inspired a remarkable comeback with a century in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

What Justin Langer said

Langer recalled, "Before the series started, Steve Waugh, my hero, called me and honestly admitted that he was in contact with Rahane and mentoring him prior to the series. As the iceman, Steve Waugh's calmness was evident in Rahane's performance during that series. When I learned about their conversations, it raised red flags for me."

In the absence of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane led the Indian side to a resounding 2-1 victory in the 2021 Border-Gavaskar Trophy . In the Boxing Day Test, Rahane scored a century and emerged as the Player of the Match.

Ajinkya Rahane in the WTC

Although Rahane fell short of a well-deserved century on Friday when Pat Cummins dismissed him for 89 off 129 balls, his performance was sensational considering his absence from the team for nearly 18 months and uncertainty about his future. Starting at 71 for 4 in 18.2 overs, Rahane's innings helped revive India, taking them to a total of 296 runs. Australia have a lead of 296 runs ahead of Day 4.

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is very much looking forward to the World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India and aims to emulate his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indian and India skipper Rohit Sharma's calmness on the field.

“The calmness he (Rohit) has out in the middle is so evident. He’s obviously been there and done that for 10 years. To be out there with him and just talk through a situation was awesome," said Green ahead of the ICC marquee clash which is scheduled to start from June 7.

Speaking about his role in the IPL, Green said he was asked to be aggressive and that Rohit showed the ways on how to go about it.

“My role was trying to be aggressive and then he obviously showed ways to go about it, whether it was attacking spin, attacking pace, kind of picking your bowler in a way,” added the 24-year-old.

Talking about which India batsmen they'll want to get out cheaply, Green took former India skipper Virat Kohli's name. “Virat Kohli. I think he always tries to be the man to stand up in big moments,” he said.

While Green had a decent IPL as he scored 452 runs in his maiden season and claimed six wickets as Mumbai managed to reach the second qualifier, he feels there's won't be problem to switch back to red-ball mode at all.

"A World Test Championship is obviously a massive moment, so I look forward to that. There is nothing like Test cricket when you’re kind of out in the middle. Obviously your nerves are running really high. I think the best players are the best ones that are able to handle that," said the big all-rounder.

After the one-off championship Test, Australia would next be facing England in the iconic five-Test Ashes series.

Team India could face another injury scare ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final with Jaydev Unadkat a major doubt. Playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Unadkat got injured in the nets on Sunday before the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clash at home and could now be a major doubt along with KL Rahul, who also limped off with a hamstring problem.

What happened to Unadkat?

Unadkat was bowling around the wicket in the nets when in his follow through his left foot got stuck in the rope that keeps the nets up. He had a nasty fall on his elbow and was seen with his arm in a sling with an ice pack on his left shoulder, as reported by Espncricinfo.

Unadkat was in great form during the domestic season for Saurashtra and led them to their second title in the Ranji Trophy. During the season Unadkat became the first player to take a hat-trick in the first over of a Ranji Trophy match and scalped 26 wickets in four matches. He also made his return to the Indian team after 12 years and was reckoned to be one of the options for India during the summit clash at the Oval in London.

It is also understood that the Saurashtra will remain in Lucknow with the rest of the squad during which the team management will keep a close eye on the situation. The extent of the injury is still unknown with the management yet to comment on the injury.

On the flip side, skipper KL Rahul is also part of the treatment table and could be out of LSG’s next clash on Wednesday, May 3 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The Lucknow-based franchise has been on a torrid run of home form and lost their last three home matches.

For Rahul, he was seen injuring his hamstring while making an attempt during the field and was consequently injured. The management nor the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are yet to comment on Rahul’s injury.

WTC Final: Team India likely to face another blow, Jaydev Unadkat joins casualty list with shoulder problem

Ajinkya Rahane’s selection in the Indian team for the World Test Championship (WTC) final might have come as a surprise for many, but the experienced former India vice-captain against the odds made it to the squad. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to turn back the pages as they got Rahane in the team, but according to a report, the board consulted MS Dhoni to get his services into the squad.

According to a report by The Times of India, the BCCI approached Rahane’s franchise skipper at Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni to have him in the 15-man squad. The Mumbai-based batter is having a spectacular Indian Premier League (IPL) season and has already amassed 209 runs in five matches at the time of writing. With form on his side and the absence of key players within the Indian team, left the BCCI was left with no alternatives but to get the services of Rahane as a seasoned campaigner.

Rahane has not played for India since the Test series in South Africa in January 2022 and looked surplus to requirements after the arrival of Shreyas Iyer and other key options. However, with Shreyas Iyer injured and Hanuma Vihari not in consideration, the Board opted to get the services of Rahane for the solitary final against Australia in June.

BCCI consulted MS Dhoni for Ajinkya Rahane's selection in WTC final squad- Report

Former Australia captain and commentator Mark Taylor has backed David Warner for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against India in June while he struggled for the national side recently. Warner has been on the backlash of fans and former cricketers after failing to make a mark in the India tour and home series against South Africa. Taylor also urged the Australia selectors to play Warner in the first two Ashes Tests while keeping Cameron Bancroft or Matt Renshaw as the backup openers.

"If I am reading the tea leaves right, it sounds like they will stick with David for the World Test Championship at The Oval," the former Test captain told AAP.

Taylor, who succeeded World Cup winner Alan Border in 1994, thinks Warner still has enough in the tank to lead Australia to WTC glory.

"And if that's the way Australia are thinking about the World Test Championship, then yes, they have to start with him for the Ashes.

According to the former skipper, seeing Usman Khawaja and Warner open would be a hard perspective when they take on India at the Oval in June. He has backed the team to keep faith in the same openers for the WTC final as well as the first three Ashes Tests.

"It would be very hard to have Usman Khawaja and Warner open the batting and then change a week later for the first Test at Edgbaston. Whoever they think is our best opening combination for the World Test Championship, should do the first three Tests of the summer."

Speaking on potential successors to Warner if he fails, Taylor has recommended Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw as the potential headline makers. Bancroft has not played a Test match since the 2019 Ashes, but was the leading run-scorer in this summer's Sheffield Shield with 945 at an average of 59.06, while Renshaw played for the Aussies in the India series.

"My old way of thinking, I always like a right-and-left-hander combination. So I would love to see Cameron Bancroft get another opportunity at the top of the order," he said. "I see Renshaw has been making runs in New Zealand [for Australia A], but Bancroft has made a heap of runs in the Australian summer.

World Test Championship: Mark Taylor backs THIS IPL star for showpiece final, also urges for two Ashes Tests

Former India great Sachin Tendulkar, while speaking at a program, has suggested that India should pick their squad as per the conditions for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia.

The WTC Final will be played in England from June 7-11 and the English conditions are known to be supportive to fast bowlers unlike India's spin-conducive pitches. Sachin, keeping the conditions in mind, said one has to understand the condition and pick the squad accordingly.

“In Test cricket, you will have to understand conditions for the next five days and pick the squad accordingly. We have played well and we have a good team, a balanced team. It would be slightly challenging for a captain to have extra spinners in the team to get the balance right. I am only thinking from India’s point of view, let Australians do what they want to do. We stand a very good chance,” he said at India Today Conclave.

India, who are in the WTC final for the second consecutive time, would be wary of English pitches after losing the first time against New Zealand.

India, however, will be without their frontline pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been ruled out of the game itself after undergoing back surgery. In Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Umran Malik, India do posses enough firepower in the bowling department though.

The worries although don't end here for India as their star wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant is also recuperating after a freak car accident is unlikely to play a part in the WTC Final.

Former India players Ravi Shastri and Sunil Gavaskar, however, want out of favour batsman KL Rahul to handle the dual responsibilities of wicket-keeper and batsman instead of Pant's replacement KS Bharat who recently did the duty behind the wickets in the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

WTC Final, 2023: Sachin Tendulkar shares his views on selecting playing XI against Australia

WTC final date out: The ICC World Test Championship final date has been announced, which will take place at The Oval later this year. There will be a reserve day for the ICC World Test Championship final (June 12), which will take place at The Oval in London from June 7 to 11. At the WTC final match last year in Southampton, New Zealand defeated India by eight wickets to win the inaugural competition.

As team India hosts visiting Australia for the four-match Test series and three-match ODI series in February and March, it is imperative to look at how the series will impact India’s standing in the ICC World Test Championship.

Currently, Australia is sitting at the top of the points table with a winning percentage of 75.56. The Aussies played the last test series against South Africa and thrashed them 2-0 at home in January. Team India is currently at the second spot with a 58.93 winning percentage. Sri Lanka and South Africa are placed at the third and fourth spots respectively.

India loses third Test, campaign for WTC final still alive

Team India lost the third Test match of the ongoing four-match Test series in Indore on Friday, March 3. Although they had been in control of the game from the beginning, no one had anticipated that they would crumble against Australian spinners in the second innings. Australia defeated India by 9 wickets after India were skittled out for just 163 runs in the second innings.

But here's good news for Indian cricket fans: India is still in the race to reach the WTC final. Now, Team India must win the fourth and final Test match of the series slated to be held from March 9 to 14. Overall, India must finish the series with a 3-1 lead to reach the WTC final. However, if India suffers another defeat in the final Test match, its fate will be decided by the performance of Sri Lanka and South Africa in the last remaining two test series. (More details below)

World Test Championship points table

With a PCT of 69+, Australia now holds the first slot in the WTC points rankings. India now holds the second position in the WTC points table after a PCT decline to 60. Sri Lanka, which has a PCT of 53.0, is ranked third.

As of now, two more test series are yet to be played to decide the two finalists of the ongoing cycle of the ICC World Test Championship. The first Test series will be played between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, while the second and last Test series will be played between South Africa and West Indies.

How can India qualify for the WTC Final?

Team India has to win at least 3 matches out of 4 to meet Australia in the WTC final match. However, if team India manages to win less than 3 matches in the IND vs AUS series, then India’s qualification will depend on the performance of Sri Lanka and South Africa in the last remaining two test series.

How can team India grab the number 1 spot in test rankings?

Under the following scenarios, team India will be able to overtake Australia to become the number 1 team in the world test rankings.

If Team India wins the series 2-0 (India wins 2 matches and 2 matches are drawn)
If Team India wins the series 3-1 (India wins 3 matches and Australia 1)
If Team India wins the series 4-0 (India wins all 4 matches, but not possible now)
If Team India wins the series 3-0 (India wins 3 matches and 1 is drawn, not possible now)

India loses third Test, campaign for WTC final still alive Team India lost the third Test match of the ongoing four-match Test series in Indore on Friday, March 3. (More details below) World Test Championship points table With a PCT of 69+, Australia now holds the first slot in the WTC points rankings. If Team India wins the series 2-0 (India wins 2 matches and 2 matches are drawn) If Team India wins the series 3-1 (India wins 3 matches and Australia 1) If Team India wins the series 4-0 (India wins all 4 matches, but not possible now) If Team India wins the series 3-0 (India wins 3 matches and 1 is drawn, not possible now)

WTC final date out: The scenarios under which Team India can qualify for World Test Championship final

Team India have sealed a place in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) in June after Sri Lanka suffered a shocking defeat on Day 5 of the Christchurch Test. The win meant that India have qualified for the WTC final as their Asian counterparts’ worse Win Percentage (PTC) will see them miss out even if India draw or lose the fourth Test match in Ahmedabad later in the day against Australia.

India make WTC final

While India are still engaged on the final day of the Ahmedabad Test, it was New Zealand’s win in Christchurch that saw the 2021 WTC runners-up make the final yet again. Needing nine wickets to win on the final day, rain played spoilsport in Christchurch as the contest was heading to a draw. However, Kane Williamson’s flurry with the bat coupled with Daryl Mitchell’s stunning batting display in the final session saw New Zealand win the contest by two wickets.

The win eventually means that, no matter what the result is in Ahmedabad, the Indian team will make the WTC final. Sri Lanka needed to inflict a whitewash on New Zealand to make the final, but their failure has resulted in India making the final instead.

As things stand, even if Sri Lanka win the second Test against the Kiwis at Basin Reserve in Wellington next week, they will attend a maximum win PCT of 53. With India’s contest heading to a draw in Ahmedabad, they are likely to reach a winning PCT of 59, making it mathematically impossible for either Sri Lanka or South Africa to reach the WTC final.

For the first time in 20 years in Men’s cricket, both India and Australia will play in a global final. IND vs AUS WTC 2023 final match date, time, venue, squad; All you need to know about India vs Australia match

History will be made in June 2023 when India and Australia will meet in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) at the Oval. The summit clash was confirmed on Monday after India sealed its passage to the WTC final with a dramatic win for New Zealand in Christchurch. The win for New Zealand which condemned Sri Lanka out of reckoning for the WTC final will now see both India and Australia fight for a special feat when they cross paths once again later this year.

India and Australia eye special ICC feat

While India are still playing in the Ahmedabad Test at the time of writing, their berth is already confirmed in the WTC final with opponents Australia also through after winning the Indore Test. As things stand, the winner of the WTC final in June will become the first time to win all the International Cricket Council (ICC) events (senior men’s) and will therefore complete a Grand Slam of titles.

Both India and Australia have won the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy and the winner of the WTC final will add another ICC Trophy to its cabinet and therefore become the first Grand Slam winner. In case the WTC final ends in a draw, the title will be shared and therefore will see both India and Australia become the ICC Grand Slam trophy winners.

India will have a second bite at the cherry to add the WTC final trophy to its cabinet, having fallen short in the 2021 showpiece final. India lost to New Zealand in the WTC 2021 final on reserve day when New Zealand got the better of them at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. But today’s events in Christchurch have seen India earn another shot at glory but will face a stern test in form of Australia.

The summit clash will be the first time in 20 years when both India and Australia meet in the final of an ICC event (senior men’s). Not since the 2003 ODI World Cup final have India and Australia met in the final when the Aussies got the better of Sourav Ganguly’s men at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. The match will also serve as the perfect platform for India to end their 10-year drought for an ICC trophy at the senior men’s level.

WTC Final: India and Australia set to chase THIS special feat after booking slots for summit clash

The Indian team will eye a place in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) as they take on Australia in the final Test match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The contest starting on Thursday, March 9 at the Narendra Modi Stadium will have Team India scrambling for a place in the final of the WTC as they will need a win to keep their fates in their own hands and make the showpiece event final on June 7.

Why a draw could spell the end for India in WTC?

Currently, India occupy second place in the WTC standings with a win percent (PTC) of 60.29. If the Indian team does win the Ahmedabad Test, they will attend a win PCT of 63, making it mathematically impossible for Sri Lanka to reach the WTC final, even if they win their two-match Test series by 2-0 as they will attend a win PCT of 61.

However, a draw for the Indian team in the Ahmedabad Test will see them reach a win PCT of 59, while a 2-0 series win for Sri Lanka will see them take the pole position and hence reach the final of the WTC in June at the Oval. However, any other result apart from a 2-0 series win for Sri Lanka would see Team India make the final at their expense.

What happens in case of a defeat for India?

In case of a defeat for India, they will attend a win PCT of 57 and will thus hand over the initiative to Sri Lanka. However, as explained earlier the Sri Lankan team will still need a win by a 2-0 margin to make the final.

Changes in Indian camp?

Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami is all set to return to the playing XI for the final Test against Australia in Ahmedabad as India eye a slot in the finals of the WTC. Shami was rested for the third Test in Indore as part of the workload management drill by the BCCI and team management for the key players who are in the scheme of things for the 50-over World Cup.

As India currently lead the four-match series 2-1, having lost the previous match at the Holkar Stadium by nine wickets on a wicket that ICC rated ‘poor’, they will aim to win the final Test and qualify directly for the finals of WTC for the second time. As of now, only Australia have qualified for the WTC final, which is scheduled to take place at the Oval in London on June 7th.

WTC 2023: Why a draw in Ahmedabad could spell end of road for team India in World Test Championship?

WTC 2023 Points Table: On Friday (March 03), Australia thrashed India by nine wickets to win the third and penultimate Test, in Indore, in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy to keep the series alive at 2-1. Moreover, Australia also qualified for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, to be held at The Oval, London in early June, with their famous triumph on a turning track at the Holkar Stadium, Indore. Resuming Day 3, Australia started their run-chase, where they needed 76 for a win, and lost Usman Khawaja in the first over. Nonetheless, Travis Head's 49* and Marnus Labuschagne's 28 not out led the Steve Smith-led Aussies to victory, and through to the final of the second cycle of the WTC. The damage was done for India after they only managed 109, opting to bat first on Day 1 on Wednesday (March 01), before conceding a vital 88-run lead to the visitors -- who were all-out for 197 -- on a tough batting pitch tough. In their second essay, Rohit Sharma & Co. fell flat once again with Nathan Lyon taking 8 for 64 (ending with an 11-wicket haul in the match). Being all-out for 163, India gave a paltry 76-run target which the Aussies chased down in style during the first session of Day 3. With this win, Australia have become the first side to enter the WTC final. India have to wait for the final Test, in Ahmedabad and need a win to not depend on other results and meet the Aussies in the summit clash. Sri Lanka is the only other team who can play spoilsport for India and reach the final if they whitewash hosts New Zealand in their forthcoming two-match series. When you are playing on challenging pitches, we need to be brave. We allowed their bowlers to bowl on one particular spot. Not taking any credit away from their bowlers. especially Nathan Lyon, he kept challenging us hitting the right lengths. When the bowler is trying to do that, gotta be a little brave which I thought we were not. Things happen like that, but we can take a lot of credit about how we batted in the first 2 games." On the way forward, he opined, "Its all about everyone coming together and chipping in. We want few guys stand up and put their hand up to take the team through. You will falter in your plans and that's what happened in this game, we didn't adapt as well as we would have liked to." The fourth and final Test begins in Ahmedabad on March 09.

WTC points table 2023 ICC World Test Championship ranking after Australia beat India in Indore

Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by a whopping 246 runs to end the two-match Test series, in Galle, at 1-1. After having lost the series opener by four wickets, the Islanders produced a much-improved show in all departments to close the series with an emphatic win and enter the top-five in the second cycle's updated ICC World Test Championship points table.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan, on the other hand, have slipped to the fifth position, below Team India. South Africa and Australia continue to occupy the first two spots, respectively, and have a strong chance to enter the final of the ongoing WTC cycle.

Riding on Prabath Jayasuriya's five-fer, who ended with eight wickets overall, SL dismissed Pakistan for 261 to register a convincing win.

At the post-match presentation, Karunaratne said, "Back is still painful, getting an MRI tomorrow. Hopefully it is nothing. Someone had to take the responsibility, and I felt it was my time after Angelo got out. As a team we have played really well, we have stuck together as a batting unit. We come back strongly in the series, but we need to look to win every moment. Some mistakes that we will look to correct. Prabath played with me earlier and I saw his potential, we knew his potential and we saw what he could do this series. Angelo and myself have been playing since U-15 level, he has been someone who has always supported me and helped me. 100 matches is a great achievement and I hope he can play many more games for Sri Lanka."

Babar, on the other hand, opined, "Tough game for us, we were trying to win. Credit to Sri Lanka, they bowled really well. We were ahead at a point in the second innings, but Dimuth and DDS played very well to take the game away from us. These are difficult conditions but we will take a few positives on how we played on this surface."

Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Sri Lanka level series with Pakistan in Galle

Team India were favourites to win the fifth and final rescheduled Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham, before Ben Stokes-led England scripted a remarkable seven-wicket win by chasing a mammoth 378 on Day 5 on Tuesday (July 05). With this defeat, India lost a golden opportunity to win their first-ever Test series on English soil since 2007 as both sides settled for a 2-2 scoreline.

Jasprit Bumrah-led India were asked to bat first and posted 416, after being 98 for 5, riding on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, England folded for 284, giving a sizeable 132-run lead to the visitors. India only managed 245 in their second essay to lose the plot and couldn't remove final innings' centurions Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root as the duo's unbroken 269-run fourth-wicket stand took England to a historic seven-wicket win in Edgbaston.

With this defeat, India have complicated their journey enroute to the ICC World Test Championship final. While India still have quite a few games left in the ongoing second cycle, they find themselves at the fourth spot -- with a percentage of points (PCT) of 52.08%. Thus, they have their task cut-out to enter the finale for the second time on the trot. Here's how India can still make it to the final two:

Bangladesh pulled off a huge upset on Wednesday (January 5) to beat World Test Champions New Zealand by 8 wickets in the first Test, of the two-match series, to go 1-0 up at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. With NZ's back against the wall, leading by 17 runs with half of their side back in the hut at stumps on Day 4, the home side couldn't stage a miraculous recovery as pacer Ebadot Hossain's 6 for 46 dented the Tom Latham-led side in their second essay.

Chasing a paltry 40 runs for win, skipper Haque and experienced campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten to take their side to their first-ever Test victory in and against the Black Caps. With this loss, NZ's 17-match unbeaten streak at home in whites also came to an end. After the famous win, Bangladesh Test skipper Haque told the broadcasters at the post-match presentation, "It was teamwork. Everyone was keen to win the match and they put their hand up in all three departments. We won because of the bowlers, both in the first and second innings they were outstanding. They did all the hard work and bowled in the right areas. He (Ebadot) was unbelievable for us. We didn't play well in the last couple of Test matches and it was important to put our legacy to the next level. We have to forget about this win and look forward to the Christchurch Test."

Talking about the first Test, Bangladesh opted to bowl first and dismissed the Black Caps for 328, after they were 227-4 at one stage. Updated ICC World Test Championship points table after Bangladesh upset NZ by 8 wickets to go 1-0 up

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee has praised the Indian bench strength and believes that the young bowlers are ready to take over from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami.

India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning August 4 at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.

"The bench strength is crucial for a team to do well and India`s performance in Australia bears testimony to that. Teams are not of just 11 players anymore. There are some 16-17 of them and it is about having others who are good enough to stand up at the world level at any given time. Also, with travelling in bubbles, there will be players who get extended rests and others who get fatigued, but that is how the times are," Lee wrote in his column for ICC.

"A word here about the Indian bowling attack during the World Test Championship, which I feel has been fantastic. They have experienced bowlers and some good young guys coming through. They have enough pace, are excited and enthusiastic, ready to take over from the likes of Bumrah and Shami. This trend may help India do well for the next 10, 15 or even 20 years," he added.

In the first WTC cycle, New Zealand defeated India in the finals to win the Test mace. Lee believes that WTC has brought back the interest in the longest format of the game.

"It is heartening to note that lots of people have been watching Test cricket, and if at all any proof was needed for that, the broadcast figures for the final released last week are there for all to see. The World Test Championship has changed the cricket landscape, setting a new benchmark. We talk about T20 cricket and 50-over cricket and even newer versions of the game, but I believe that Test cricket continues to be in vogue," said Lee.

Talking about India and England Test series, Lee said: "The action is back in England and I am sure Joe Root and Virat Kohli would be looking for their teams to be at their best. There will always be some series that is followed more than others. I think if a series is seen as high profile, it only helps build the excitement around the game, taking it beyond fans of just the participating countries, especially now with so much context to each match."

"As a fast bowler, it was heartening to see some good quality of fast bowling during the first edition of the championship. The final was dominated by the ball with some good bounce and carry. I hope that we continue to see more matches on pitches which are conducive for fast bowling," he added.

New Zealand on Wednesday defeated India by eight wickets to win the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final, played at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. New Zealand's two most experienced batters – Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor – guided the Kiwis to their first ICC trophy since 2000.

Team India's bowlers failed to dominate the Kiwi batsmen and failed to find much swing that could have troubled the New Zealand batsmen.

Mohammed Shami stood out from the Indian pack with four wickets, including breathtaking spells of bowling. Ishant capped it up with three while Ashwin ended up with two. Jasprit Bumrah’s off form would bother India a bit but one can expect a bowler of Bumrah’s calibre to go through it for long.

Former India all-rounder Roger Binny lashed out at Virat and Co.'s bowling attack and called it 'an absolute disgrace'.

"Watching the Indians bowl on Sunday (the third day of the Test), it was not the way to bowl in a Test in England. It was an absolute disgrace. What did the opposition do to you? What sort of a performance was this? They are playing a Test match," Binny was quoted as saying by News18.

"When you bowl, you bowl in the batsman’s half. You don’t bowl in your half. They have to play the shots. The shorter you bowl, the more the ball seams. You have to attack to take wickets, not bowl defensively," he added.

However, Indian skipper Virat Kohli feels that the Test format cannot be fully utilised through a one-off match, either it is a series or the final of the World Test Championship final.

"I am not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game. If it is a Test series, it has to be a test of character over three Tests - which team has the ability to come back in the series, or totally blow away the other team. It can't just be pressure applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly you are not a good Test side anymore. I don't believe in it," Kohli said after India's eight-wicket loss in Southampton to New Zealand.

Indian head coach Ravi Shastri pitched the idea of a three-match series. Several former India players also supported Shastri's idea. On the eve of the match, skipper Kohli said that the team will take it as another Test match and that the outcome won't carry too much significance.

"It has to be a hard grind and something that definitely needs to be worked around in the future. "At the end of three matches, where there's effort, there's ups and downs, there's situations changing during the course of the series, a chance to rectify the things you have done in the first game, and then really see who is the better side over the course of a three-match series or something, will be a good measure of how things really are," Kohli added.

"So we are not too bothered by this result because we understand as a Test side what we have done over the last 3-4 years, not just over the last 18 months. So this is not a measure of who we are as a team [with] the ability and the potential we have had for so many years now."

In the past few Test series, Team India lost the opening Test match only to stage a comeback and win the series.

According to Kohli, worthy winners can be decided with two more Tests instead of a one-off match.

"Absolutely. If you saw the way the game went, with whatever time we got on the field, why wouldn't you want to see two more Tests of the same teams battling it out and, eventually, being the worthy winners of the World Test Championship? Historically all the great series that you've seen in Test cricket, you remember them over a period of three matches or five matches perhaps, with two teams going against each other and those series become memorable," the India captain pointed out.

"It looked good for India purely because the way both the batters applied themselves. They were proactive in their approach. They were reactive. They were not wanting to hang back and see how things goes. They were standing outside the crease," Bangar said.

"At times, they were walking towards the bowlers, which was done by Shubman Gill on a regular basis. Just to disturb the lengths of the New Zealand bowler. I felt that they succeeded in that because they disturbed the lengths, New Zealand had to try out different field placements at times, which normally they would not have done.

"If India had stuck to a traditional approach, but India were proactive and hence they got the upper hand in first hour," he signed off.

"Forecast is something we are not focussed on. We are not going to think about what might change. Regardless of anything we have all our bases covered and we know that. So, we are not bothered about what the weather forecast holds or whether we have to change the whole outlook of the team," Kohli said when asked about the weather affecting his team combination.

Former New Zealand bowler Shane Bond feels that Kane Williamson and co. will bundle out Team India cheaply if they win the toss and opt to field first in the upcoming World Test Championship finals that will be contested at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

"...if New Zealand win the toss and bowl as well as they have. I think they'll bowl out India cheaply and that ain't a bad thing," Bond said in a virtual press conference arranged by Star Sports, the official broadcaster of the game.

However, Shane Bond feels that Kiwis might pay a huge price if they fail to dismiss Virat and Co. cheaply.

"The risk is if they (NZ) don't bowl them out, India have got two world-class spinners and are right in the game.

"So, it's the toss that is going to be huge. And that first innings is going to be huge," he pointed out.

Weather at the Ageas Bowl will play a vital role in the match. According to the forecast, there is a good chance of rain on all five days in Southampton. But, ICC has decided to keep a reserved day to make up for the lost overs. Under the overcast conditions, the Dukes ball is likely to swing more. Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson will form a menacing trio for India's star-studded batting line-up.

Bond talked about Rohit Sharma and Trent Boult and said: "What I do know, even during the IPL, Boult was running in and hitting the pads of Rohit, telling him that this is what is going to happen in the WTC final. This was just brilliant, those two were aware that they are going to come up against each other. I just love Rohit Sharma, I see him playing a Matthew Hayden type of role."

"He goes out as he did against England earlier this year, he imposes himself, he is dynamic and he can score pretty quickly. He can take the game away in one hour, batting at the top of the order suits him, if he scores fast, it instantly puts pressure on the bowling attack. I cannot wait for the battle between Boult and Rohit. I am expecting to see few smiles between the guys as well," he added.

Former Kiwi also backed his team to win the World Test Championship finals and lift the mace.

"I think New Zealand are going to win. Game practices going to have a massive impact. I think in India have got a balanced bowling attack. I think they'll play three seamers and two spinners," Bond said.

New Zealand's pace attack proved to be too good for Team India in the series, therefore, the Indian batting order will be very crucial for the juggernaut clash in Southampton.

VVS Laxman, while speaking on Star Sports, said that he would go ahead with five batsmen.

"Jadeja is a more than capable batsman who can now play match-winning knocks under pressure. So, I would back Jadeja to bat at number seven."

'Would go with five batsmen': VVS Laxman suggests Team India's batting order for WTC finals

When New Zealand lost the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019, Ross Taylor thought he might have missed his last chance at winning a major final.

Two years later, the Black Caps batsman is back in England, looking to make amends after the Super Over loss at Lord’s as New Zealand and India prepare to face off in the ICC World Test Championship Final in Southampton.

And the 37-year-old admits that had he come out on the right side of that dramatic finale, there is a very good chance he would have called it a day.

He said: “It was disappointing to have lost that match at Lord’s a couple of years ago. When you lose and you’re at the age that I was, you think that might be the last time I ever get to play a World Cup final, so it’s nice for me to be here.

“If we had won that game, I might have retired after that, so I’m glad that I didn’t and that I’m here today.

“I just think it’s really exciting to be here, the whole New Zealand side are really excited, it’s going to be a great occasion, playing against India. We’ve only been number one for a few weeks, they have been number one for five or six years so they are going to be a really hard opposition to play against, but we’re looking forward to that.”

While Taylor was considering retirement in 2019, one man who will be calling time on his Test career after the Final is New Zealand wicket-keeper BJ Watling.

The 35-year-old made his Test debut back in 2009 and is set to make his 75th and final appearance for New Zealand in the longest format of the game, earning high praise from his coach Gary Stead.

Stead said: “BJ is a fantastic player, a great team man. He’s turned himself into, I think, one of the best keeper-batsmen in the world over the past 10 years of him playing. Let’s also remember he was a manufactured keeper as such, it wasn’t his first thing to do. The way he’s developed himself and continued to look to get better over that period of time is pretty amazing.

“I don’t think we as a team will realise how much we’ll miss BJ in the dressing room and in the role he is in until he’s not there. He’s a quiet individual but when he speaks, people listen. He’s very popular among the whole team. He will be a sad loss for us but we want to celebrate in style hopefully, and send him out on the right note.”

Pujara looking forward to WTC Final: For India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, a Test specialist, the ICC World Test Championship offers a rare opportunity to play in a major final.

And the 33-year-old is relishing the opportunity as India ramp up their preparations following an inter-squad warm-up match.

He said: “Personally, it means a lot to me. Playing one format, the Test format, this is the first time we are playing the World Test Championship Finals. As a team we have worked over a period of time, you play so many series at home and away from home. To be at the top requires a lot of hard work.

“It’s like playing a World Cup final in any format. This is the first time in the Test format, but playing an ODI World Cup final or even a T20 World Cup final, it’s very similar to that. Personally, I’m looking forward to it, and as a team we are looking forward to it.

“It will be challenging but we have been through a lot of preparation recently. The time we have had here, in the last nine or 10 days, we have tried to use it to the fullest. As a team, we are very well-prepared. We have the experience, most of the guys have played in England in the past, so I think we are up for the challenge, so we are very confident.”

According to Agarkar, resilience and belief are Team India's biggest strength as they head into the final clash at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

“I think a couple of things, resilience or just belief in your ability or in your own team,” Agarkar said on Star Sports show Game Plan.

He recalled India's series against Australia and England while explaining his point.

“Look at the England series at home, we expected India to win. Yes, the conditions suit their (India) wicket or their spin bowling, but they lost the first Test comprehensively. They came back and beat England really well in the next three Tests,” Agarkar added.

Ajit Agarkar, who featured for Team India for 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and 4 T20Is, felt that the series against Australia gave India players like Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan and Mohammed Siraj.

“Look at Australia (series), they (India) lost that first Test, bowled out at what 36 – losing the host of your first team players, whether it's your best batsman in the team, Virat Kohli, your best bowler in the team, Mohammad Shami, those sort of losses. By the end of the series, you had a Shardul Thakur, T Natarajan, Mohammad Siraj bowling for you, against a full-strength Australian team and you still managed to find a way to win in those situations. So, the depth in that team – even though there was not a lot of experience – the guys that came in had enough belief that they could turn up. That’s been India’s strength,” Agarkar said.

“There have been some tricky situations. Apart from those two Tests in New Zealand, in general, if you look at India’s records in recent times, they’ve always competed, if not won and found ways to win with different players, which has been their strength,” he added.
