Somali forces and "international security partners" have been waging an aggressive counterinsurgency in recent weeks, with the government on Monday announcing the killing of Abdullahi Yare, a top Al-Shabaab operative, in a joint air strike on Saturday in the south of the country.

"This leader... was the head preacher of the group and one of the most notorious members of the Shabaab group," the ministry of information said.

A co-founder of Al-Shabaab with a $3 million US bounty on his head, Yare was believed to be next in line to take over the leadership of the movement from its ailing chief Ahmed Diriye, according to the ministry.

Military officials and clan elders told AFP that local residents had decided to take up arms against the militants, who have been accused of extorting money from them.

"The explosion was huge, and it destroyed most buildings" nearby, said Mohamud Addow, who witnessed the attack.&nbsp;

The United States, which recently restored a military presence in&nbsp;Somalia&nbsp;to fight the jihadists, condemned the bombings.

The attacks "targeted gov't officials working to bring peace to the region &amp; healthcare workers tending to the wounded," the US embassy in Mogadishu said on Twitter.

“Whether it’s confronting crimes against humanity in Xinjiang, war crimes in Ukraine and Ethiopia, or racism in the United States, the rights chief’s most effective tools are robust investigations and a strong voice,” she said, adding that a top priority must be to immediately follow up on Bachelet’s report on the Uyghurs.

“What’s needed by the millions of people around the world whose rights are being violated every day is an advocate in their corner who will take on abusive governments large and small without fear and without hesitation,” Hassan said.

Since then, Myanmar has been in chaos, with rampant conflicts after the army pulverised peaceful protests in towns and cities.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a political and economic bloc to promote intergovernmental cooperation amongst its member nations, agreed a five-point "consensus" to end hostilities last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

The plan that never saw the light of day was a roadmap to end the violence through dialogue.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing said in a speech aired on state media that Myanmar had been striving to overcome the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic while facing internal chaos.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>"So, it was difficult to implement the ASEAN consensus due to the lack of stability," said Min Aung Hlaing, adding that only when the situation was "normal" could progress be made.<o:p></o:p>

<o:p>&nbsp;</o:p>Western governments condemned the coup and the detention on various charges of Nobel laureate Suu Kyi and numerous members of her party and supporters.<o:p></o:p>

These remarks come after a subcommittee last month released a statement detailing the findings of their study into the human rights situation of Uyghur and other Turkic Muslims in the Xinjiang province.Responding to the report, Sweet said, "We encourage the government as well... that they would align with, certainly our Commonwealth partners, and make sure that we`re establishing a very clear response to the bully tactics from the Chinese Communist Party."
