West Bank’s Jenin witnesses deadliest Israeli Army raid, thousands flee northern Gaza

The United Nations and the United States have raised concerns over Israeli settler violence in the occupied West Bank amid the ongoing war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, on Wednesday (Nov 1).

Meanwhile, Israel, on the same day appointed an ultranationalist lawmaker and radical settlement activist Tzvi Succot as the head of the Israeli parliament (Knesset) West Bank subcommittee, reported Times of Israel.

More than 820 Palestinians displaced in West Bank: UN

More than 820 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank have been displaced amid settler violence and increased movement restrictions since the beginning of the war on October 7, said the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OHCA) in a statement on Wednesday.

The UN agency also noted a significant rise in Israeli settler violence with an average of three incidents per day in 2023 to seven a day now.

During this period, OCHA recorded 171 settler attacks against Palestinians, including 26 different casualty incidents, damage to more than 100 Palestinian properties, and around 30 cases where both property damage and casualties were reported.

The UN agency also noted the use of firearms by Israeli settlers to intimidate and threaten Palestinians, including by opening fire.

Israel-Hamas war: At least 7 Palestinians killed across West Bank; 10 Israeli officers injured amid clashes

As the world’s focus has mainly been on the ongoing war in Gaza, Israel may be in the midst of preparing for a two-front war. The Israeli army on Monday (Oct 16) said that they activated a plan to evacuate residents next to Lebanon a day after exchange of fire with Hezbollah which has since led to the death of one civilian and wounded three others.

The focus has also shifted to the West Bank where Israel’s devastating bombing campaign on Gaza in retaliation to the Palestinian militant group Hamas’ attack on southern Israel has fuelled deadly violence sparking concerns that it could also erupt into another front in the war.

Israel-Lebanon tensions

The Israeli military said that they have activated a plan to evacuate residents within a two-kilometre zone of Lebanon. This comes a day after at least one civilian was killed and three others were injured after Iran-based Lebanese militant group Hezbollah launched missiles at a northern Israeli border village.

The plan involves the evacuation of 28 Israeli settlements in the northern part of the country, the residents of which will be moved to state-subsidised guest houses, said the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the ministry of defence, in a statement.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, on Sunday that Israel is not interested in having a war on its northern frontier with Lebanon.

The heavily armed Iran-backed group had also attacked five Israeli outposts in the disputed Shebaa Farms area on Saturday (Oct 13) and said that it was “fully prepared” to join the militant group Hamas in the war when the time is right.

West Bank violence

According to the Palestinian Authority’s health ministry, at least 58 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,100 have been injured since Saturday (Oct 7) – after Hamas launched its deadly surprise attack on Israel – in clashes with Israeli troops, arrest raids and attacks by Jewish settlers.

Meanwhile, the IDF, on Monday (Oct 16) said its troops have arrested 360 wanted Palestinians across the West Bank, including 210 affiliated with Hamas, since the beginning of the war with the Palestinian militant group in Gaza.

The Israeli military claims that 20 Hamas members were arrested last night alone and seized weapons and military equipment from one of the detainees in the village of Kafr Qallil.

There have been multiple reports of clashes erupting between the Israeli army and Palestinians in the West Bank in recent days, particularly since the war between Hamas and Israel began. The United Nations has also called the past week the deadliest for West Bank Palestinians since at least 2005.

11 Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza since Oct 7: PSJ

The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PSJ), on Monday, claimed that Israel air strikes in Gaza since the beginning of the war have killed 11 Palestinian journalists and injured over 20 others, reported the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

According to PSJ, two journalists are missing and 50 main and branch offices of media centres were bombed amid the ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. The group has also claimed journalists were “beaten, detained, and prevented” from covering violence in the West Bank and Jerusalem, reported the Palestinian news agency.

Israel-Hamas war: At least 44 Palestinians killed in West Bank, more than 200 arrested, since Saturday

Recent images and videos from South Israel are not for the faint-hearted. The world watches in shock and horror as the true face of Hamas, a group long defended and mischaracterized by many, comes into the stark light of day. The ISIS-style execution and kidnapping videos make one thing abundantly clear: Hamas is not a band of “revolutionaries” or “freedom fighters”. They are terrorists, and their malevolence is at par with the most diabolic terror groups in history.

There has been an unsettling inclination to paint Hamas in shades of gray, to believe that perhaps there is some redeeming quality, some justification for their actions. However, the live streaming of shooting sprees in Sderot, the parading of desecrated, naked bodies through Gaza streets, and the abduction of innocent children and elderly citizens lay bare the monstrous nature of this organisation.

Referring to them as "revolutionaries" is not only a gross misrepresentation but also an insult to genuine freedom fighters worldwide. Revolutionaries fight against oppressive systems for a greater cause, often with an ideology aimed at liberation and the greater good. What we see from Hamas, however, is a brutal agenda that targets innocent civilians, sows fear, and relishes chaos.

Yesterday marks 50 years since Israel faced a surprise attack starting the Yom Kippur War, and history eerily echoes now as another surprise assault unfolds today. Israel, like any sovereign nation, has the unequivocal right to defend its people and its land against such acts of terror.

The unfortunate reality is that there's a narrative war at play. While on one side, there's undeniable evidence of the atrocities committed by Hamas, on the other side, there's a dangerous rhetoric that seeks to justify, or worse, romanticise their actions. Such misleading narratives not only give Hamas the ideological ammunition it needs but also mislead a global audience, many of whom may not have access to unfiltered information.

It is crucial, now more than ever, for global media and international organisations to classify and address Hamas for what they truly are: terrorists. By doing so, we send a message that such acts of wanton violence against civilians are inexcusable and will not be tolerated. To the resilient people of Sderot and other affected areas in South Israel, the world's thoughts are with you. No civilian should ever have to experience the sheer terror and horror that Hamas has inflicted. It's high time the international community acknowledges the true nature of Hamas and unites in condemning their abhorrent acts.

In the face of such evidence, silence is complicity. We must all raise our voices against the brutalities of Hamas, shatter the false narratives, and ensure that justice is served for the innocent lives lost and forever changed by this terror.

Hamas: The undeniable face of terrorism in Israel

A 19-year-old Palestinian student was allegedly killed in the Israeli-occupied West Bank town of Huwara on Friday (Oct 6) after being attacked by a Jewish settler, said the Palestinian health ministry. Later in the day, violence erupted again when dozens of people attended the Palestinian student’s funeral where they clashed with the Israeli military.

What happened?

The Palestinian Ministry of Health said one of the settlers shot a 19-year-old university student Labib Dumaidi in the heart, who later succumbed to his wounds.

However, the Israeli military offered a different account and said that its soldiers fired at the Palestinian after the suspect hurled a brick at an Israeli vehicle during clashes between dozens of settlers and residents.

The Israeli forces also said that the suspect – without offering details on his victim’s identity – was struck by gunfire. A military spokesperson said they were unaware that any of the settlers had fired a weapon during the confrontations.

Relatives of Dumaidi, in a testimony collected by Israeli human rights group Yesh Din, said that he had sought refuge on the roof of his home and was trying to ward off settlers who were hurling rocks at their house and vandalising the family’s car when the settler shot him.

Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the killing of Dumaidi a “heinous crime” and called for international intervention to stop armed settler militias.

Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who visited Huwara on Friday said Israel must take firmer action against Palestinian militants “to save lives and reinstate security,” adding that they will further develop Jewish settlements.

Palestinians clash with Israeli military

Dozens of people attended Dumaidi’s funeral under the watch of Israeli soldiers when the violence erupted once again. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 51 Palestinians were wounded in clashes with the Israeli military saying that the injuries were mostly due to tear gas but also rubber-tipped bullets and three from live fire.

Settler violence in Huwara

Residents of the West Bank town said that a group of settlers – some of them carrying arms – set up a tent in Huwara, held prayers, and later marched through the town and began vandalising shops and cars.

“More than 200 settlers gathered in the middle of Huwara after midnight, shouting and dancing, some of them with covered faces,” Palestinian resident Abderrahman Dmidi told AFP.

He added, “They began throwing stones towards some houses, and then the young people…tried to defend their homes by throwing stones.”

Residents also alleged that Israeli soldiers turned a blind eye to the violence that unfolded. “It’s clear that the settler militias are protected by the occupation’s soldiers,” Thaer Qawareeq, a supermarket employee, told Reuters, adding that this is the third time that settlers have damaged their supermarket.

Recent clashes

The incident comes amid a surge in settler violence across the West Bank. On Thursday (Oct 5), a suspected Palestinian gunman shot at a car in Huwara which was carrying three members of an Israeli family, who were unharmed.

Later that day, the Israeli military tracked him down and killed him. On the same day, at least two Palestinian gunmen and five Israeli soldiers were wounded in separate clashes.

As per officers, an Iranian security official living in neighbouring Jordan had recruited three Palestinian men in West Bank and another two Palestinian citizens of Israel. They were tasked to gather intelligence about several high-profile Israeli politicians.
