An Israeli drone strike killed five people in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, the Palestinian press agency Wafa and Palestinian sources reported, while the Israeli military said it struck a "terrorist cell" in the Tulkarem region.

The director of the Thabet Thabet Hospital in Tulkarem said in a statement that "five martyrs" had arrived at the facility after "an Israeli drone strike on a Palestinian vehicle close to the village of Zeita in Tulkarem".

According to Wafa, an Israeli military drone targeted a vehicle "with two missiles" which caught fire, killing five men.

At the scene of the strike a witness told AFP, "I live less than 50 metres (yards) from here. We came (after) the sound of an explosion and saw a vehicle on fire" on the road towards Zeita, to the north of Tulkarem.

Israeli drone strike in West Bank kills 5, including Hamas commander

Palestinian officials said Israeli troops killed two men, including a customs officer, in separate raids in the West Bank on Wednesday, the latest violence to rock the occupied Palestinian territory.

The raids were carried out before dawn in Qalandiya refugee camp and the town of Tubas, residents and officials said.

When contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it was "looking into" reports of the two deaths.

Palestinian sources identified the men killed as Ahmad Nidal Aslan, 19, from Qalandiya, and Abdul Nasser Muhannad Sarhan, 23, from Tubas.

Residents of Qalandiya said Aslan was killed when Israeli forces shot him after they entered the town to demolish the home of Mohammad Manasra, accused by Israel of carrying out a deadly attack on a West Bank settlement in February.

Clashes erupted after the troops blew up the second floor of the building. Six men were wounded, they added.

"At dawn, the occupation soldiers fired two bullets at Ahmad. He was taken to hospital where he died," a resident told AFP, declining to be identified for safety reasons.

Further north in Tubas, the Palestinian health ministry said Israeli troops shot dead Sarhan and wounded two others.

"The Israeli army raided the town of Tubas at dawn and arrested two young men," a resident of the town told AFP, also declining to be identified.

The health ministry said the death toll from an Israeli raid on the town of Tulkarem on Tuesday had risen to six after a Palestinian shot by troops died of his wounds.

The Israeli military said its forces "eliminated" a local Hamas commander in the raid on the town's refugee camp.

Israeli troops kill two in West Bank raids, say Palestinians

The United States on Thursday (Jul 11) announced sanctions on three Israelis and five entities it accused of disturbing peace in the occupied West Bank. Of those sanctioned, the most notable is the Lehava organisation led by already-sanctioned Bentzi Gopstein.

"Lehava's members have engaged in repeated acts of violence against Palestinians, often targeting sensitive or volatile areas. Additionally, we are imposing sanctions on four outposts that are owned or controlled by U.S.-designated individuals who have weaponized them as bases for violent actions to displace Palestinians. Outposts like these have been used to disrupt grazing lands, limit access to wells, and launch violent attacks against neighboring Palestinians," said US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Additionally, the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers in a statement condemned Israel for legalising five outposts in the West Bank.

Israel approved three wildcat settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, the Peace Now watchdog said, calling it a new stage in the "annexation" of the territory.

The Israeli agency which organises West Bank construction recognised outposts in Mahane Gadi, Givat Han and Kedem Arava on the edge of existing settlements, Peace Now said. It also approved 5,295 extra homes in dozens of existing settlements.

All of Israel's settlements in the West Bank, occupied since 1967, are considered illegal under international law, regardless of whether they have Israeli planning permission.

Dozens of unauthorised settlements have sprung up in the territories -- ranging from a few tents grouped together to prefabricated huts that have been linked to public electricity and water supplies.

Excluding annexed east Jerusalem, some 490,000 Israeli settlers now live in the West Bank alongside some three million Palestinians. Far-right parties in Israel's governing coalition have pressed for an acceleration of settlement expansion.

Israel has approved the largest land seizure in the occupied West Bank in more than 30 years, according to the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now. The decision is likely to escalate tensions amid the ongoing war in Gaza. The latest land seizure involves the appropriation of 12.7 square kilometres (nearly 5 square miles) of land in the Jordan Valley.

Peace Now reported that this recent appropriation is the largest since the 1993 Oslo accords. The decision, finalised late last month but only revealed on Wednesday (July 3), follows the seizure of 8 square kilometres (approximately 3 square miles) in March and 2.6 square kilometres (1 square mile) in February. The combined actions have made 2024 a peak year for Israeli land seizures in the West Bank.

What does it mean?

The appropriated land is contiguous and situated northeast of Ramallah, the administrative centre of the Palestinian Authority. By designating these lands as state property, the Israeli government has opened them up for leasing to Israelis and therefore prohibiting private Palestinian ownership.

The expansion of settlements in the occupied West Bank is viewed by Palestinians as the primary obstacle to a lasting peace agreement. Most of the international community also considers these settlements illegal or illegitimate. Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem during the 1967 war, territories that Palestinians seek for a future state.

However, Israel's current government calls the West Bank as the historical and religious heartland of the Jewish people and opposes Palestinian statehood.

Israel has established over 100 settlements in the West Bank, home to more than 500,000 Jewish settlers with Israeli citizenship. In contrast, the 3 million Palestinians living in the West Bank remain under Israeli military rule.

Although the Palestinian Authority governs parts of the West Bank, it is restricted from operating in 60 per cent of the territory where the settlements are located.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) transferred significant legal powers in the West Bank to pro-settler civil servants, The Guardian reported. The powers were apparently handed over to those who are working for Israel's far-right minister Bezalel Smotrich.

The report mentioned that IDF posted an order on its website on May 29 to transfer responsibility for dozens of bylaws at the Civil Administration from the military to officials.

The Civil Administration is the Israeli body governing the West Bank and also looks after planning and construction. Notably, around 60% of the Occupied Palestinian Territories are under full Israeli administrative and security control.

Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh on Monday (Feb 26) said that he had submitted his government's resignation to President Mahmud Abbas stating that Gaza now needed "new political measures" taking into consideration its current status due to the ongoing war.

"I submit the government's resignation to Mr President (Mahmud Abbas)," Shtayyeh said, adding that it comes in the wake of the "developments related to the aggression against the Gaza Strip and the escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem".

He further said that he offered the resignation last Tuesday (Feb 20), but formally submitted it "in writing" on Monday.

The resignation by Shtayyeh's government, which rules parts of the occupied West Bank, comes as countries like the United States called for a reformed Palestinian Authority that would take charge of all Palestinian territories after the war in the Gaza Strip comes to an end.

"The government was able to achieve a balance between meeting the needs of our people and providing services like infrastructure," said Shtayyeh, whose cabinet took office in 2019.

"We will remain in confrontation with the occupation ... and will continue to struggle to establish a state on the lands of Palestine," he said.

Abbas has faced growing anger since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2023 after the Palestinian militant group launched unprecedented attacks against Israel.

Many have criticised the Palestinian president for not strongly denouncing Israel's offensive and the growing violence in the West Bank.

Since 2007, the Palestinian leadership has been split between the Palestinian Authority of Abbas, which exercises limited power in the West Bank, and Hamas which rules Gaza.

It is not yet clear if Abbas will accept the resignation immediately or wait until a new prime minister is appointed.

However, local media reports suggest that Abbas might appoint Mohammed Mustafa, an executive committee member of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, to head his new cabinet.
