Why Palestinian displacement in Gaza war alarms the UN and Arabs

At least one person was killed and eight others were injured in a terror attack in the West Bank on Thursday (Feb 22) after three gunmen opened fire on several vehicles near a Jewish settlement, according to Times of Israel.

Magen David Adom (MDA) director Elo Bin informed that the victims include three seriously wounded and two moderately hurt. The victims were waiting near az-Za’ayyem checkpoint between Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim when the gunmen carried out the attack.

"The three terrorists got out of their vehicle and started shooting from automatic weapons at vehicles that were standing in a traffic jam on the road towards Jerusalem," the force said in a statement.

The security forces immediately responded to the attack and neutralised two gunmen while the third fled the scene, albeit briefly. Following police searches in the area, the third gunman was also found and promptly shot, the Israeli Police added.

Assault rifles, makeshift submachine guns and a grenade were discovered from the gunmen who have been identified as residents of the Bethlehem area, per the police.

At least one dead, 8 injured in terror attack in West Bank: Reports

The United States, on Wednesday (Feb 21) urged the United Nations’ top court not to remove Israel from the occupied West Bank and Gaza without security guarantees and consider Israel’s “very real security needs”.

“Any movement towards Israel’s withdrawal from the West Bank and Gaza requires consideration for Israel’s very real security needs,” Richard Visek, acting legal adviser at the US State Department told the court.

He also noted that the UNGA had asked the UN court to opine on the consequences of Israeli occupation prior to Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel.

“We were all reminded of those security needs on October 7, and they persist. Regrettably those needs have been ignored by many of the participants,” Visek added.

He called on the judges to stick to the established UN framework for the two-state solution.

Washington has been “engaging intensively” with Palestinians, Israel, and other states to not only address the current crisis in Gaza but also “a political settlement that will lead to a durable peace in the region that includes lasting security…and a path to Palestinian statehood,” said the acting legal adviser.

He added, “There is broad international support for achieving a negotiated solution to the conflict that will give rise to a Palestinian state.”

Therefore, the court “should not find that Israel is legally obligated to immediately and unconditionally withdraw from occupied territory,” said the US legal adviser.

Notably, the US amid protests and criticism of Israel’s military action in Gaza continues to back Israel, while President Joe Biden’s administration continues to insist on a two-state solution for the region. However, the leaders of the Jewish state do not agree with the same.

‘Flagrant violation of international law’

The UN top court also heard from Vladimir Tarabrin, Russia’s ambassador to the Netherlands who spoke about the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza while condemning the October 7 attack on Israel.

He went on to slam Israel’s retaliation to the attack and called it “collective punishment” which cannot be justified. Around 90 per cent of Gazans have been forced to leave their homes and they are living in inhumane conditions, said Tarabrin.

ICJ hearings on Israel’s occupation

The UN top court is hearing arguments from an unprecedented 52 countries on the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands that will go on till February 26.

However, the ICJ has been asked not to opine on the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the occupied territories, but many states participating in the hearings have called on Israel to do so.

The 15-judge panel has around six months to issue their opinion on the request.

What Israel has to say

Israel, which is not participating in the hearings, said in a written statement that the UN court’s involvement could be harmful to achieving a negotiated settlement.

Amid the ongoing hearing at The Hague, on Wednesday, the Israeli parliament, Knesset, voted to back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s declaration opposing the “unilateral” creation of a Palestinian state.

Netanyahu’s ruling Likud party said 99 out of the 120 lawmakers voted in support of the declaration, passed earlier this week by the cabinet, rejecting all “international dictates” seeking to push for Palestinian statehood.

In West Bank, the echoes of the Israel-Hamas conflict reverberate through once-bustling markets and silent streets. Businesses, once thriving, now face an unprecedented economic downturn.

West Bank economy plunges amid Gaza war fallout

The Gaza conflict has brought a harsh new economic reality to Ramallah, the West Bank's de facto capital. Supermarkets have employed security guards to deter shoplifters. Thousands of businesses have closed. One official believes the current economic situation is worse than the one produced by the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Economic crisis deepen in West Bank amid Gaza turmoil

In the quiet corners of the West Bank, once-thriving markets now stand deserted, echoing the economic fallout from the Israel-Hamas conflict that erupted on October 7. As we explore the repercussions through interviews recorded by AFP, we witness a region grappling with unprecedented challenges, where businesses that once flourished now face an uncertain future.

The human toll on local businesses

Hafeth Ghazawneh, owner of a famous falafel stall, shares his journey from prosperity to uncertainty. Before the conflict, his vibrant breakfast and lunch offerings attracted artisans from nearby workshops. In the aftermath of the attacks, his once-bustling stall sits abandoned, and his income has plunged from 7,000 to 2,000 shekels per month.

The ripple effect on the West Bank economy

Beyond the faltering stalls, the broader West Bank economy is in turmoil. The World Bank predicts a potential six per cent decline in GDP this year.

The International Labour Organization reports 32 per cent job loss. Israel's withdrawal of 130,000 work permits from Palestinians compounds the crisis, leaving many without a source of income and exacerbating an already dire situation.

Businesses struggle to stay afloat

Bishara Jubran, manager of a household products factory, provides insights into the challenges faced by businesses. With losses totalling $200,000 in the past year, his factory, once thriving on exports to Gaza, now struggles to find a market. Increased transport costs, checkpoints, and sealed-off towns further exacerbate the situation, with the West Bank's economy operating at only 50 per cent of its capacity.

Researcher Taher al-Labadi sheds light on the inherent fragility of the Palestinian economy. Hindered by Israel's control over borders and tax collection, the economic downturn has been compounded by unpaid taxes since the war outbreak. The Palestinian Authority, grappling with financial strain, has struggled to pay public servants, intensifying the economic challenges faced by the population.

Bottomline

As the West Bank grapples with the aftermath of the conflict, businesses and communities face an uphill battle. The fear of the unknown looms large, echoing the sentiments of Bishara Jubran: 'We don't know if we'll be able to go to work tomorrow.'

Israel-Hamas war: Several killed in strike near south Gaza hospital; UN asks Israel to ‘end unlawful killings’

Amid the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group in Gaza, Palestinian Christians held a sombre Christmas vigil in the West Bank city of Bethlehem on Saturday (Dec 23) where they once believed Jesus was born. This comes as Palestinians in the biblical place of Jesus Christ’s birth have this year decided to forego Christmas celebrations in solidarity with the Gazans as the war rages on.

The decision to tone down the Christmas festivities amid the ongoing war was taken last month in solidarity with Palestinians.

‘We feel sad’

The normally bustling Bethlehem on Christmas Eve was compared to a ghost town, on Sunday (Dec 24) as festive lights and Christmas tree decorated the city’s Manger Square were missing and so were the thousands of tourists who gather each year to mark the holiday.

Typically, pilgrims go to the reputed location of that stable in Bethlehem’s Byzantine-era Church of the Nativity, where most Christmases are joyful displays of lights and trees in Manger Square. Instead, the city marked Christmas with candle-lit hymns and prayers for peace in Gaza.

This year a Nativity scene in Manger Square showed a baby Jesus wrapped in a white shroud, reminiscent of the hundreds of children killed in the fighting in Gaza. The scene was also surrounded by barbed wire, the grey rubble in contrast to the joyous lights and bursts of colour that normally fill the square during Christmas.

“This Christmas comes to Bethlehem in a different shape. Nowadays Bethlehem, as any other Palestinian city, is in mourning. We feel sad,” said town mayor Hanna Hanania, lighting a candle in Manger Square.

“This year, without the Christmas tree and without lights, there’s just darkness,” said Brother John Vinh, a Franciscan monk from Vietnam who has lived in Jerusalem for six years, as quoted by the Associated Press.

He also spoke about always coming to Bethlehem to mark Christmas, but this year was especially sobering.

The city was almost deserted, with few worshippers around and no Christmas tree as the church leaders decided to forego “any unnecessarily festive” celebrations, in solidarity with Gazans.

People of Bethlehem

Christians make up around two per cent of the population across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, according to Protecting Holy Land Christians, a campaign organised by the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, and a few members from Gaza.

The West Bank has also witnessed a surge in violence since the beginning of the war on October 7 with at least 300 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

“My son asked me why there’s no Christmas tree this year, I don’t know how to explain it,” Ali Thabet who lives with his family in Al Shawawra, a Palestinian village near Bethlehem tells CNN.

He told the American media outlet that they would visit Bethlehem each Christmas “because our relationship with our Christian brothers is a strong relationship.”

He added, “We join them in their celebrations, and they also join us in our celebrations. But this year’s holiday season is very bad.”

‘We feel sad’ The normally bustling Bethlehem on Christmas Eve was compared to a ghost town, on Sunday (Dec 24) as festive lights and Christmas tree decorated the city’s Manger Square were missing and so were the thousands of tourists who gather each year to mark the holiday. People of Bethlehem Christians make up around two per cent of the population across Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, according to Protecting Holy Land Christians, a campaign organised by the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem, and a few members from Gaza. But this year’s holiday season is very bad.” (With inputs from agencies)

Police have arrested the gunman who shot and injured three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington in Vermont on Saturday evening (Nov 25).

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Jason J. Eaton.

The shooting is being seen as a suspected "hate-motivated crime."

Eaton lived in an apartment building near the site of the shooting.

He was detained around 3:30 pm (local time) on Sunday at the site of the attack, the Burlington Police Department said.

What do we know about the incident?

The incident took place on a street near the University of Vermont where the suspect, who was described as a “white man with a handgun,” without saying anything “discharged at least four rounds from the pistol" fled on foot, said the police.

But according to a pro-Palestinian NGO, the suspect was not silent.

The assailant opened fire after he began to shout at and harass the three men who were speaking Arabic, said the Institute for Middle East Understanding.

The police confirmed that two of the young men were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – when they were attacked.

The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents across the US since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.

“In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime,” said Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, in a statement.

The local police chief said that they are already in touch with “federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners” to prepare for the next steps if the incident is proven to be a hate-motivated crime.

About the victims

The victims were identified by their families as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdel Hamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmed, who attends Trinity College in Connecticut.

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in northeast US.

Two of the students were visiting the home of the third student’s family in Burlington for Thanksgiving.

“Two are stable, while one has sustained much more serious injuries,” said the police speaking about their condition.

The victims’ families issued a joint statement urging the authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.

“As parents we are devastated by the horrific news that our children were targeted and shot,” said the victims’ families. It added, “We call on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.”

The advocacy group American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee also called for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.

“The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent,” said ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub.

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called the attack “shocking and deeply upsetting,” adding, “hate has no place here, or anywhere.”
