Jenin in ruins | What is happening in the West Bank?

At least 13 people have been killed and hundreds displaced after Israel finished what it calls a military operation in the West Bank. The colony's oldest refugee camp now mirrors a massacre site. Palestinians have returned to their homes after they earlier fled the horror. The scenes are unimaginable to them. Their lives, and their houses all flattened in two days of deadly assault. In between global slamming, Israel justifies its actions, calling them necessary to neutralise the terror threat. Ghadi Francis gets you all the details.

Raids, militants and devastation; What is happening in the West Bank?

Israeli forces killed two Palestinian militants on Friday (July 7) in a firefight that erupted during raid on the occupied West Bank of Nablus, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.

The Palestinian health ministry announced "two martyrs and three injured as a result of the occupation (Israeli) aggression on Nablus".

The Israeli army reported there were "no injuries" among the forces.

The army said that it had entered Nablus to arrest two individuals. These individuals, said the army, were wanted over a shooting at Israeli police in West Bank settlement. The shooting took place earlier this month and had resulted in no casualties.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are “completing the mission” in Jenin, said Netanyahu, two days after the country launched its largest military action in West Bank in the past 20 years. He added, “At this moment we are completing the mission, and I can say our widescale action in Jenin is not a one-time thing.”

Speaking about Israel’s largest raid in decades during a visit to a military post near the West Bank city, Netanyahu said, “We will continue as necessary to root out terrorism. We will not allow Jenin to go back to being a hotbed of terror.”

Israeli forces pull out from Jenin as rockets fired from Gaza

Israel carried out air strikes on the Gaza strip in response to rocket fire from the coastal enclave. The strikes came as the military began withdrawing forces from Jenin in West Bank, after a major two-day operation in the area. Residents of the Gaza strip said Israeli aircraft launched a series of airstrikes at sites in the coastal Palestinian territory.

Under attack: Thousands of Palestinians flee Jenin refugee camp after major Israeli raid

In recent days, the Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-controlled West Bank has witnessed a major military operation by the Israeli army, resulting in the displacement of thousands of Palestinians and the death of at least ten.

Over 1,000 Israeli troops appear to have taken part in the ‘anti-terror campaign,’ making it the largest drive in the West Bank in the past 20 years.

Throughout the operation on Monday, IDF troops searched for weapon storage sites, explosives labs, and other “terror infrastructure”; clashed with armed Palestinians; and carried out airstrikes against various targets in the refugee camp, the IDF said in a statement.

The Israeli armed forces launched the attack on Monday, arguing that the Jenin camp had become a hotbed of terrorism, which has claimed the lives of several Israeli citizens over the past 18 months. According to a report by the Guardian, hundreds of fighters from militant groups including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Fatah are believed to be operating from the camp.

Media reports estimate the number of refugees living in the camp to be 18,000. And due to the ongoing violence, at least 3,000 people have already fled the site. “There are about 3,000 people who have left the camp so far,” Jenin deputy governor Kamal Abu al-Roub was quoted as saying by the AFP news agency. The deputy governor added that arrangements were being made to provide shelter to the displaced people in schools and other sites in Jenin City.

Background on the Jenin refugee camp

The Jenin refugee camp was established in the 1950s and has long been regarded as a hotbed of Palestinian resistance by its residents. Over the years, it has become a stronghold for various militant groups, which Israel sees as terrorists. The camp's semi-autonomous status and limited presence of the Palestinian Authority have allowed these armed factions to operate within its confines.

The Israeli army says that recent strikes are aimed at ridding the camp of these elements, posing a major security threat for Israeli citizens.

The Israeli military operation

Israel launched an intense military operation in the occupied West Bank, specifically targeting the Jenin refugee camp. The operation involved drone strikes and the deployment of hundreds of troops with an open-ended mission to counter the militant presence in the camp. The Palestinian health ministry reported at least 10 people killed and 100 injured, with the numbers expected to rise.

IDF said that more than 300 explosive devices were seized and demolished by troops during the operation. In total, some 20 drone strikes were carried out across the city.

Why is Israel attacking Jenin camp now?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the campaign by citing the escalating terrorism emanating from Jenin. He claimed that the operation aimed to dismantle militant command centres, confiscate weapons, and destroy weapons factories.

Israel justified its actions as a necessary measure to ensure the security of its citizens and put an end to the safe haven for terrorism that Jenin had allegedly become.

To put things into perspective, IDF says some 50 shooting attacks were carried out by the residents of the area targeting innocent Israeli citizens since the last year. Later on, the attackers would seek refuge in the camp to escape IDF’s retaliation.

International condemnation of the Israeli campaign

The Palestinian leadership in the West Bank held an emergency meeting in response to the Israeli operation. They decided to halt their already limited contacts with Israel, freeze security coordination, and increase their efforts in international bodies, including the United Nations, against Israel's actions.

Three Arab countries with normalised ties with Israel, namely Jordan, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, along with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, also condemned the ‘anti-terror’ drive.

Humanitarian crisis on the horizon

As a result of the Israeli operation, thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee the Jenin refugee camp. The Palestinian Red Crescent and the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) reported that residents were leaving the camp, with UNRWA emphasising the urgent need for food, drinking water, and other essential supplies.

The recent events in Jenin are part of an ongoing cycle of violence and unrest in the West Bank. The area has witnessed an increase in attacks over the past year, resulting in a rising death toll.

This year so far, a total of 133 Palestinians living in the West Bank have lost their lives to the ongoing violence. The current incursion into the Jenin refugee camp marks the first major operation since the 2002 battle of Jenin during the second intifada.

UN expresses concern

The United Nations Middle East envoy expressed grave concern over the escalation of violence in the West Bank, highlighting the dangers associated with the situation. International humanitarian law was brought into question due to Israeli drone attacks on residential areas.

Such attacks, involving heavily populated areas, are seen as violations of international standards. However, IDF says that terrorists in Jenin camp have stored their weapons in a mosque and usually carry out attacks from a base near the UN building.

The West Asia Post: Israel approves new West Bank settlement plan

In a move that defies international opposition, Israel has granted approval for the construction of 5,700 new homes in Jewish settlements within the West Bank, marking a record-breaking annual high for settlement development under the government's six-month tenure.

Despite receiving criticism from the international community, which deems all settlement construction a violation of international law and recent Israeli commitments, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration has also authorised residency in three illegal outposts established by settlers without government approval, reported the Irish Times.

Netanyahu's government faces condemnation

Tensions between Israel and the United States have escalated as the Joe Biden administration increasingly voices its disapproval of Israel's settlement policy. The strained relations have been further exacerbated by the government's plans, seen as the most right-wing in Israel's history, to undermine the judiciary.

Simultaneously, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his belief that Israel should curtail the Palestinian aspiration for an independent state. Netanyahu's government faces condemnation Tensions between Israel and the United States have escalated as the Joe Biden administration increasingly voices its disapproval of Israel's settlement policy. The strained relations have been further exacerbated by the government's plans, seen as the most right-wing in Israel's history, to undermine the judiciary. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his belief that Israel should curtail the Palestinian aspiration for an independent state. Israel sets annual record with approval of 5,700 new settlement homes in West Bank amid global criticism

It's been a week of fierce Israel-Palestine violence in the West Bank. A series of reprisal and revenge attacks involving Israeli troops, settlers and Hamas militants have killed at least a dozen people. Tensions run high on both sides.

Palestinian killed after Israeli settlers attack town following deadly shooting in West Bank

The drone strike, believed to be the first in the area in nearly 20 years, marked a major escalation by Israel in a more than year-long campaign against militants in the area.

Three killed in Israeli drone strike as violence escalates in West Bank

The Israeli Army on Wednesday conducted a rare drone strike in the occupied West Bank region, killing three members of a 'terrorist cell' in the process.

"IDF soldiers identified a terrorist cell inside a suspicious vehicle after the cell carried out a shooting adjacent to the town of Jalamah. Following the identification of the terrorist cell, an IDF UAV fired toward the cell and thwarted them," read a statement from the Israeli military.

Jenin Deputy Governor Kamal Abu al-Roub confirmed the killing, saying there were "three dismembered bodies" inside the car which had been hit by drone missiles.

Despite the hostilities between the two sides, West Bank has remained largely unaffected by aerial strikes. This is the first strike by the Israeli side since August 2006, according to Palestinian agencies.

Notably, in February, Israel carried out a rare daytime arrest operation that triggered fighting in the occupied West Bank, killing at least 11 people and wounding more than 100.

Prior to the ground operation, both sides had fired projectiles that caused significant damage. At the time, many dubbed it as one of the deadliest escalations in the occupied West Bank since 2005.

Four shot dead near West Bank settlement

The Benjamin Netanyahu-coalition government in Israel on Sunday tabled plans to approve 4,650 housing units in the occupied West Bank. The plans were included on the agenda of Israel's Supreme Planning Council that meets next week.

Although only 1,332 units are up for final approval, with the remaining going through the preliminary clearance process, the decision by the Israeli government is set to irk many.

"We will continue to develop the settlement of and strengthen the Israeli hold on the territory," said Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich who also plays a leading role in overseeing West Bank administration.

Palestine condemns Israel's decision

The decision did not go down well with the Palestinian Authority which self-rules limited parts of the West Bank. The authority said it would boycott the Joint Economic Committee meeting with Israel scheduled on Monday.

Meanwhile, Hamas, a Palestinian Islamist group that has been using Gaza as a launchpad for attacks, condemned the move, adding it "will not give (Israel) legitimacy over our land. Our people will resist it by all means".

Notably, for a long time, Palestinians have been demanding the establishment of an independent state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip with East Jerusalem as the capital.

Netanyahu administration in overdrive

The US, a strong Israel ally had earlier requested the Netanyahu administration to halt settlement expansion as it sees as the step as an obstacle to peace with the Palestinians.

However, since coming to power again in January, Netanyahu has exacerbated the speed of approving housing units. As many as 7,00 new units have been approved by the coalition since the turn of the year. It has also amended a law that clears the path for the settlers to return to four settlements that had previously been evacuated.

The UN Security Council earlier this year strongly opposed Israel's expansion of settlements. At the time, PM Netanyahu's office released a stinging statement, saying the criticism “negates the rights of Jews to live in their historical homeland".

It added that the UN statement "ignores Palestinian terror attacks in Jerusalem in which 10 Israeli citizens were murdered this month, turns a blind eye to the fact that the Palestinian Authority subsidizes terror and pays the families of terrorists, and diminishes the antisemitism that led to the murder of millions of Jews.”

Netanyahu administration in overdrive The US, a strong Israel ally had earlier requested the Netanyahu administration to halt settlement expansion as it sees as the step as an obstacle to peace with the Palestinians. However, since coming to power again in January, Netanyahu has exacerbated the speed of approving housing units. As many as 7,00 new units have been approved by the coalition since the turn of the year. It has also amended a law that clears the path for the settlers to return to four settlements that had previously been evacuated. Israel to approve over 1,300 housing units in West Bank, much to the chagrin of Palestinians

At least five Palestinians have been killed and 91 others wounded after an Israeli military raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank, said the Palestinian Ministry of Health, on Monday (June 19). This comes as the Israeli forces conducted an early morning raid involving an Apache helicopter for the first time in the West Bank in some two decades.

What has Israel said about the raid in the West Bank?

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Border Police said that their personnel entered the northern West Bank city in the early morning hours to detain two Palestinians. “During the activity, a massive exchange of fire took place between the forces and armed gunmen in the area,” said the Israeli forces, in a joint statement.

It added, “Large numbers of explosive devices were hurled at the forces. The forces responded with live fire.” The IDF also said that several suspects were hit during the raid and “as the security forces exited the city, a military vehicle was hit by an explosive device, damaging the vehicle".

At least seven Israeli troops and border police personnel were injured in the roadside blast and gunfire said the IDF and police. In a separate joint statement, Israeli forces said two IDF soldiers were moderately injured and five Border Police officers were moderate to lightly wounded and have been airlifted to hospitals in Israel for treatment.

An Apache helicopter was then deployed to launch missiles after gunmen were identified, said the IDF, to allow safe evacuation of the wounded soldiers and drive back gunmen. Israeli military spokesman Richard Hecht talking to the reporters after the initial firefight also said that the use of a roadside bomb was “very unusual and dramatic,” and said it might affect future military strategy in the territory.

Death toll after Israeli raid in Jenin rises to five

According to the Palestinian Wafa news agency, the raid began early morning, with Israeli troops storming the Jenin camp with live ammunition, stun grenades and toxic gas. It was later reported by the Palestinian Ministry of Health that four Palestinians including a minor were killed during the raid.

The attack on the Israeli defence vehicles was later claimed by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades which said that they detonated explosive devices near IDF vehicles and targeted them with gunfire. It also claimed to have used high-grade explosives for the first time on Monday.

Speaking about Israel’s use of an aircraft, an official with the Palestinian armed group Islamic Jihad said, it “will push our fighters to use tools that will surprise the enemy,” reported Reuters. Notably, this was the first Israeli airstrikes in the West Bank since the early 2000s.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health later identified those killed as Khaled Darwish (21), Qassam Sariya (19), Ahmed Saqr (15), and Qassam Faisal Abu Sirriya (29), while the fifth Palestinian killed was not immediately identified. Its recent update also said that the number of those injured also rose to 91 people from the initial reports of 45 after the Israeli military raid in Jenin, out of which 10 were in critical condition, reported Al Jazeera.

Palestinian journalist among those injured: Officials

Palestinian journalist reporting from Jenin, Hazem Nasser, a cameraman for Al-Ghad TV channel, was wounded by Israeli fire during a military raid in West Bank, said the Palestinian health ministry, as per Al Jazeera. According to the health ministry, the journalist's injury "ranges between medium to dangerous."

Clashes in West Bank’s al-Bireh: Report

A report by Al Jazeera said clashes erupted between young Palestinians and Israeli forces at the northern entrance of the occupied West Bank town of al-Bireh, on Monday.

The report also said that the Palestinian youth had closed the entrance near the Beit El military checkpoint with barriers and stones as well as set tyres on fire and threw stones at the Israeli forces who responded by firing rubber-coated bullets and tear gas.

Egypt condemns Israeli raid

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry released a statement on Monday and said, “Egypt completely rejects this aggression, which contradicts all provisions of international law legitimacy.” It also went on to condemn what it called Israel’s “continued escalation against the Palestinians".

“Such attacks only inflame the situation further and risk going out of control, which undermines efforts to reduce tensions in the occupied territories,” the statement added.
