Faf du Plessis-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) occupy the seventh spot in IPL 2023 points table after their narrow loss over Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at home, on Monday evening (April 17). Bowling first, RCB was in for a leather hunt as they conceded 226/6 and while they were on course to chase down the target, they lost by eight runs after being restricted to 218 for 8.

RCB are expected to make a strong comeback in the season and will rely on their captain Faf du Plessis. Du Plessis has hit the ground running in IPL 2023 and is the current Orange Cap holder (259 runs) after his splendid 33-ball 62 versus CSK. Ever since the former South African captain joined the RCB camp, he has been one of their top performers and is expected to revamp his side's campaign in this year's IPL season.

In IPL 2022, Du Plessis represented the RCB franchise for the first time -- after they bought him for INR 70 million (INR 7 crore) -- and he didn't disappoint; leading the side to the playoffs and also ending as RCB's highest run-scorer. Recently, RCB's Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson explained why the veteran cricketer was chosen as the RCB captain ahead of IPL 2022.

Speaking on the RCB podcast, Hesson said, "I guess it’s really difficult coming into a group when the previous captain (Virat Kohli)&nbsp;is still there. So we needed somebody that could come in, would have respect within the group instantly because if he comes in a lot of people can be intimidated by the ex-captain being near and potentially aren’t confident enough to make your own decisions."

The New Zealander further opined, “So we wanted somebody who had captained at an international level before ideally, somebody that had respect from amongst the Indian players and the international players. That was really important that it wasn’t just somebody that would take a year to be in. We felt that at RCB we needed someone to hit the ground running."

He added, "We wanted a player who we knew could plug and play from a performance point of view. So somebody that had a really good record in the IPL in recent years and Faf clearly had that. And also would work well with the coach and the coaching group because we wanted that inclusive style. Somebody that we had a lot of good senior players Virat, Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) DK (Dinesh Karthik) that we were looking to either bring in or retain. So we needed to use those skills rather than just be an authoritarian-style captain. We want someone who will actually come and work with that group. And Faf ticked all those boxes."

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Virat Kohli is in sublime form this IPL season having already scored 214 runs in four matches so far. The batter had also managed to rack up three fifty plus scores with the latest coming in the match against Delhi Capitals.

Kohli, who scored 50 off 34, got out a juicy thigh-high full-toss ball from Lalit Yadav and was absolutely livid with himself for making a mess out of a scoring opportunity. RCB eventually managed 172 runs in their 20 overs.

“I was quite disappointed that I got out to a full toss. I’ve been playing really well. I wanted to make sure that after fifty, I was targeting 30-35 runs off the next 10 balls. That’s how I play. That would’ve helped us get past 200," said Kohli at the post-match presentation.

The batsman, however, judged the pitch correctly as he informed his teammates in the dugout, saying it slowed down considerably.

“One thing I mentioned to the guys in the change room was that 175 was enough on this pitch. It slowed down considerably when the spinners came on. Even the balls to hit off the back foot off Kuldeep were holding up, unlike the other games we played. We did well to get to that score and had the belief it was enough,” Kohli said at the presentation.

“When I’ve played my best cricket, those are the balls I’ve put away consistently (length balls on the up). That helps me to put pressure on the bowlers. When I put away their best balls, they’re going to try to do something else. I back myself to hit good balls and the best bowlers in the opposition," he added.

This was RCB's first win post two consecutive losses after winning their season opener against Mumbai Indians. Kohli also admitted that they let it slip last couple of matches but happy to get two points.

“That’s how I motivate myself to play out there. Very happy to get two points. We kind of let it slip away in the last two games. For us to bounce back like this was very crucial. That was a different mentality and phase altogether (T20 World Cup 2016 semis). I was in a space where I felt I could hit any ball. I back myself to hit good shots. When they come off, they look good,” he concluded.

Recently, Chetan Sharma, BCCI’s former chief selector, on a string operation done on him, revealed that ex-BCCI President Ganguly did play a little role in deciding Virat Kohli’s fate as the Indian captain across formats during his tenure. Besides, he also admitted that Ganguly alongside him didn’t like Kohli.

Not only this, but Chetan also revealed that Kohli was informed beforehand about his removal as the captain, and that the former number one batter lied to the media when asked about the same upon him landing in South Africa for the bilateral series in 2021/2022.&nbsp;

After the news broke out, there was a strange wave in Indian cricket that saw things getting ugly at all levels. With the team then scheduled to play bilateral series against Australia, everything went under the mat.&nbsp;

However, after what transpired at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, the venue where Virat created history, it doesn’t look like all is well between two giant figures of Indian cricket.

Meanwhile, as things stand in the IPL, Delhi suffered its fifth straight defeat, while Bangalore managed four total points in their kitty after Saturday’s win. DC will next face Kolkata Knight Riders whereas RCB will face Chennai Super Kings on Monday at home.

Questioning Kohli's batting, Doull had said, "Kohli started off like a train. He was going hammer and tongs as he was playing a lot of shots. From 42 to 50, he took 10 balls. Concerned about a milestone. I don't think there's room for that in this game anymore. Just got to keep going, especially with wickets in hand at that stage. You got to keep going."

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma finally came back in form against Delhi Capitals as he scored a nonchalant 65 off 45 in his team's first win of the season.

With the fifty, Rohit also eclipsed Virat Kohli as the player with most runs against Delhi Capitals. After his 50, Rohit now has 977 runs against Delhi at an average of 32.56 in 33 matches. Rohit scored these runs at a strike rate of 131.14 along with the highest score of 74 not out.

Rohit's matches included both the teams he has played for in the IPL, i.e., Deccan Charges from 2008-11 and Mumbai Indians afterwards. RCB's Virat, on the other hand, has scored 925 runs in 26 matches against Delhi at an average of 51.38 and a strike rate of 134.05 with the highest score of 99.

He accomplished this milestone during his side's match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. In the match, Shubman played a handy knock of 39 runs in 31 balls. His knock consisted of five boundaries. His runs came at a strike rate of 125.81. In his 77 matches in IPL career, which has seen him represent Gujarat and formerly Kolkata Knight Riders, Gill has scored 2,016 runs at an average of 32.52. He has scored his runs at a strike rate of 126.24. Fifteen half-centuries have come out of his bat in IPL with the best score of 96.

Gill's best season came last year when he played a key role in Gujarat Titans' triumph in their maiden IPL 2022 season. Last season, he scored 483 runs in 16 innings at an average of 34.50. He scored four half-centuries last season, with the best score of 96.

"If we look at what's happened till now, then the two left-handers, Tilak Varma and Sudharshan, one is 20 years old, the other is 21, they have been a lot of fun to watch. Because they seem to have a future, their temperament and maturity which we can see shows the potential they have to be good players," Shastri told Star Sports.

Tilak Varma was the find of the season for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2022. He scored 397 runs in 14 matches at an average of over 36 and SR of over 131 with two fifties and the best score of 61. In the first game of IPL 2023, he scored an unbeaten 84* off 46 balls against RCB in a losing cause, carrying the entire MI batting line-up on his back.

In 37 T20s, he has scored 1,159 runs at an average of 38.63 with a strike rate of over 139.30. His best score in the format is 84*. He has 10 half-centuries in the format.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also gave his opinion on who has impressed him the most in the IPL 2023.

"One is definitely Tilak Varma, he has impressed us a lot. He batted well last year and has performed this year as well. Even his attitude is very good. He looks like he can be a leader in the future. And the second is Jurel, the way Jurel has batted from his first innings, I couldn't even imagine the quality of his shots under pressure. So that is one boy who has impressed, even though it's still in the early stages, but these are promising signs."

Shastri was asked what was special about Vijay Shankar that got him selected for the 2019 ICC Men's ODI World Cup.

He said the player was picked up both for his bowling and batting abilities.

"In my opinion, the selectors thinking was such that, just like his innings that we have seen in this year's IPL, that kind of innings plus his bowling is a big factor in his getting selected. When he got injured during the 2019 World Cup, he got a fracture on his toe and was out for a long time. He has the talent, he has worked hard to get back to his best, and you know, at that time even Hardik was facing a lot of injury issues, so India was looking for a player who could replace Hardik and give at least two or three overs to the team and bat well, so it was always to keep Shankar ready in case Hardik got injured so that there was a quality replacement."

Shastri also spoke on who may break Virat Kohli's record for the most runs in a single season.

Shastri said it has to be an opening batsman, because only then will he get many opportunities to score runs.

"I feel it is Subhman Gill because he is in good form and also because he plays top of the order. So he will get a good number of opportunities to score runs. The pitches are good, so if he can score 80-100 runs consecutively in two or three innings, then at that point in time only he will already have 300-400 runs. According to me, it is very difficult to break the record, because 900 plus runs is huge but one thing is opening batsmen will get two extra matches and two extra innings, so opening batsmen can only break this record if it is possible."
