‘Attendees were treated like cows’: Complaint filed against Thalapathy Vijay’s Iftar event

The producers of Jana Nayagan have released a second-look poster for the upcoming Thalapathy movie as a special treat for fans, just hours after unveiling the title and first-look poster. The poster features Vijay brandishing a whip as a tribute to the legend of Tamil cinema, MGR. It is most likely a homage to the late actor's iconic fight scene from the classic movie Kadhal Vahanam.

GOAT or Greatest Of All Time, is Tamil cinema's partial attempt at portraying a Desi Ethan Hunt, the iconic Tom Cruise character from the Mission Impossible franchise. Before we get carried away with the glamorous Ethan Hunt comparison, let's remember that this 'Gandhi', the Desi special agent played by Vijay, has a wife and two kids, and the usual pressures of a family man. This includes the pick-up and drop-off of children at school, jotting down grocery purchase lists, getting sloshed at office parties, and cooking up creative reasons to escape the wrath of the wife.

From the word go, director Venkat Prabhu ensures that there are multiple agents on this violent Gandhi team. Like Ethan Hunt's team, they are with Gandhi, through thick and thin, throughout the plot. These supporting characters are well executed by Jayaram, Prashant, Prabhu Deva, and Ajmal. Most of these supporting characters are granted their individual space and importance in the plot and are not in blink-and-miss roles.

On the action front, there's everything from train chase sequences in an African desert, car chases in Thailand, bike chases in Moscow, and hand-to-hand combat scenes in the familiar coaches of the Chennai metro. In typical Tom Cruise style, Vijay is seen rappelling down a skyscraper, when the need arises, he even jumps off the skyscraper using a parachute, while humming the all-familiar Mission Impossible theme.

As for references to other films, there's plenty. These throwbacks are in the form of dialogues or background songs from yesteryear Vijay films, and other Tamil language films.

On the family front, Sneha plays the lead lady's role. As agent Gandhi's wife, Sneha shares several moments with Vijay throughout the film. They range from playful and joyful to emotional. Notable among them is their supposed 'Honeymoon' in Thailand, where Gandhi takes his family along while he's on a mission. The way events unfold in Thailand sets the tone for the film.

For those who aren't mindful that GOAT is said to be Vijay's penultimate film before his foray into Tamil Nadu politics, there are enough instances of subtle and overt hints at Vijay's next move. Set in a bar, the first song employs wordplay of "Champagne and campaign", of people not leaving the party etc. Later in the film too, amid comedy sequences, Premgi Amaren refers to Vijay's impending political foray and the secrecy around the same.

There's also an AI resurrection of the Late Captain Vijayakanth, the Tamil hero who earned himself a name for portraying the roles of special agents and soldiers. This is perhaps Vijay's way of offering his tribute to the veteran actor with whom Vijay worked in his nascent days.

Ironically, as the plot progresses, it is the much-trolled, de-aged Vijay who takes the lead (the de-aged teen, youth character played by the 50-year-old Vijay was trolled badly following the trailer release). However, the latter half of the film is all about the interplay of Thalapathy (Commander—as Vijay is known among his fans) and Ilaya Thalapathy (Junior Commander). Vijay does a splendid job in playing both of these roles.

At three hours, the film is considerably long amid contemporary standards but doesn't feel cumbersome. Though the plot twists and turns are highly predictable, Director Venkat Prabhu ensures that it is both engaging and entertaining.

In the bygone decade or so, Vijay has played a special agent in three films including GOAT. While the other films (Thuppakki, Beast) were all about Vijay's superstar image, and action sequences, and did not have any memorable side characters, GOAT does better with a good number of characters to carry the film through its three-hour runtime and make it worth a one-time watch.

GOAT has the action and stunt sequences, and mass scenes to placate the core Vijay fans, as well as some emotional plot twists, dance numbers, the odd and unnecessary 'item song' featuring Trisha. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music elevates the scenes at the right moments, there's nothing worthwhile or memorable as far as the songs go. Typically, a Vijay film grants you at least one track that you would hum on your drive back home, but there was nothing remarkable about GOAT's songs, it was as dull as a bleating goat.

PS: The one thing that remains unconvincing in GOAT is the nomenclature of the lead character. Why would anyone name a gun-toting special agent as Gandhi? This Gandhi also gets sloshed at office parties. There were times when Vijay mouthed a supposedly mass dialogue about being "Gandhi- The Father of the Nation", but that only felt drab and cringe. This is the second notable instance where a lead character plays a character named Gandhi while doing all things that one doesn't associate with the Mohandas Karamchand 'Mahatma' Gandhi (In the Vikram-starrer Mahaan, the lead character is a liquor baron named Gandhi).

Leo Day 1 Collection: Vijay's film shatters box office records. Here's how much the film has earned

When was the last time you saw a hero or lead character taking on and taming a wildly ferociously striped hyena, all with his bare hands? Perhaps, such an introduction sequence would have seemed great in a Bahubali-like film. It seems, Lokesh Kanagaraj felt it was apt to have Parthiban(Joseph Vijay), introduced in one-such Man vs Wild sequence, a glimpse of which already raised many eyebrows during the trailer release itself. After all, this is no fantasy or superhero film, this is Leo with normal flesh-and-blood characters, set in 2023. This scene would've felt cringe, even for the Vijay fans(perhaps, the pre-teen fans would enjoy it?). Maybe, showing the hero's love for wild animals was a way of establishing the wild animal that resides within the hero?

The brutality, motivations and meanness of the villain, are what make any hero-villain battle exciting and convincing. The hero's acts appear logical, only when the circumstances that push him/her to the edge are convincing enough. The fast-paced first-half of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo is completely convincing and portrays a happy family of four, who lead a calm and cozy life in the scenic heights of a town in Himachal Pradesh. Circumstances push a cafe-owner Parthiban(who is underestimated as someone selling bun and butter), to do the unthinkable. This not only disrupts the happy family but also sets the tone for what happens entirely thereafter. In the opening credits, the director also acknowledges the inspiration that the 2005 action-thriller film 'A History of Violence', had on Leo.

Speaking of fans, Vijay delivers almost everything they would expect- multiple fight sequences, a grand dance with hundreds of artists, a considerable bit of cussing and whatnot. However, conspicuous in absence was an opening hero-worship-inducing track for Vijay, as has been common in most of his recent films.

Leo is no ordinary film. From a business perspective, it'll attract quite a wide basket- Vijay fans and Lokesh Kanagaraj fans(many of whom are showing up to find out whether this film fits in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe). Just like Vijay delivers what his fans want, Loki(as the director is popularly known) also delivers- violence, multiple killing sprees, and ample references to his previous films and videogame-like chase sequences, characters gorging on mutton biriyani and explosions of godowns. Warm light of yellow-orangish shades and a lot of violence have become an inescapable Lokesh Kanagaraj template. By all means, the bloodbath in Leo far exceeds the previous LCU films. Despite all of the above, the first half ends on a high and Anirudh's music does enough to elevate the sequences.

The second half delves deeper into the life of Parthiban and offers a long-winded explanation of how the film earned its title. A flurry of characters hits us in the letter portion and it takes a while to fathom how they are all connected. While the logic that established the hero-villain battle in the first half seemed convincing, the logic that established the hero-villain war in the second half seemed ridiculous. Paired with Vijay after ages, Trisha Krishnan plays the female lead and has not much to do, except feeling pity and tense about the actions and violent reactions of her better half and taking care of the kids. This is something that's expected of Vijay-film female leads, that is if they aren't killed mid-way.

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon plays a supporting role in the film and appears as a Forest Range Officer. He is more like a friend, philosopher, and guide for Parthiban, who also happens to be a wildlife-rescue expert. At different junctures, when Parthiban faces tough times, Joshy Andrews(played by Menon) helps him out. Given how this role meanders through the film, one wonders if he is a Forest Officer or a Police Officer, or both.

In the villain department, there are too many people to talk about. The one that felt the most convincing was the baddie who appeared in the first half of the film. His eyes, mean smile, and his gruesome actions appear amply convincing, without any additional effects and glamour to establish his character. He's the raw and unpolished criminal. Sadly for this film, the raw and unpolished villain seemed a better fit than the Range Rover-owning big boss (Sanjay Dutt) of baddies(who appeared in the second half), with his entourage of black SUVs and a townful of baddies. The villains in the second half appeared all things like the template villain - rich, mindless murderers, alcohol-gulping, exotic cigarette-smoking, stylish old men. While the respective actors played their roles well, the writing that established these villains didn't seem convincing at all.

Overall, it seemed like both Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay delivered most of the elements that they have been known for. However, the film feels deficient, to say the least. The director tries extra hard to fit this film into his cinematic Universe, but it feels blatantly force-fitted and counter-productive.

LEO review: A Vijay film with Lokesh Kanagaraj trademarks, it falters after a fast-paced first-half

Tamil star Vijay's upcoming film Leo has been mired in controversy even before its release. Several cinema hall owners have now reportedly banned celebrations inside their theatres during the screening of the film's teaser/trailer.

The decision came soon after Vijay's fans tore seat covers and dismantled seats during the Leo trailer screening at a theatre in Chennai.

The Tamil Nadu government has also refused to allow 4 am or 7 am shows for Leo which will now open in theatres only at 9 am on October 19.

Fans vandalise theatre during Leo trailer screening

Taking to X on Tuesday, film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan shared pictures of a vandalised movie theatre and wrote, “Rohini Cinemas completely thrashed by Joseph Vijay fans after #LeoTrailer screening.”

Sharing the action taken against such acts, he said in another tweet, "Just IN: Tamil Nadu theatres to STOP teaser/trailer celebrations. This decision has come after Joseph Vijay fans completely thrashed Rohini Cinemas in Chennai during #Leo trailer launch celebration. The President of the Theater Owners Association has said ‘We have decided not to release any more trailers in theaters’."

No early morning shows for Leo in Tamil Nadu

Vijay's films are always the most anticipated releases of the year and Leo is no different. In order to make the release a grand affair, Seven Screen Studios Production had filed a petition before the Madras High Court requesting to allow the film to be screened as early as 4 am across cinema halls in Tamil Nadu on the day of its release.

However, on Tuesday, Justice Anita Sumanth, refrained from passing orders regarding the request for 4 am shows. The court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider its decision to not allow 7 am shows for the film.

Leo is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and marks his reunion with Vijay after the 2021 blockbuster, Master. The film also reunites Vijay with Trisha Krishnan. They have earlier worked together in films like Ghilli, Kuruvi, Thirupaachi and Aathi. Leo also features Sanjay Dutt in a key role.

Vijay's Leo to not have early morning shows after fans vandalise theatre in Chennai

Before Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan hit theatres, it was widely speculated that Thalapathy Vijay would have a cameo appearance in the film. Most fans were excited to witness the two stars sharing the screen space. The news of Vijay's cameo turned out to be false, which left many fans disappointed. But now, filmmaker Atlee has teased about a possible collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Vijay in another film.

Atlee, who helmed Jawan, spoke to RJ and TV host Siddharth Kannan recently and got candid about a possible collaboration between the two stars.

"Vijay sir and Shah Rukh sir, both said the same thing that 'bring a script and we will work together'. I also thought that they were saying all this for my birthday as a gift. The next day, Vijay sir messaged me saying that if you are going to write such a script, I will be a part definitely. Shah Rukh sir, who was right next to me said 'Sir, you are serious about this na? We will make a film together, right?'" he said.

Atlee then added how he is really looking forward to making that project see the light of day. "So, yes, every now and then they inquire about it and ask me whether I am seriously working on it or not, or if I am taking it as a joke. So, I am definitely, seriously working on it and I am hoping for it to crack someday," said the director.

Jawan is the first collaboration between Shah Rukh and Atlee. Atlee has worked with Vijay three times before, in the films Theri (2016), Mersal (2017) and Bigil (2019).

Now according to recent media reports, the actor might just be joining politics sooner than anticipated. His entry though might come at a cost.

Thalapathy Vijay will take a break from films

If rumours are to be believed, Thalapathy Vijay will be taking a break from acting after the release of Thalapathy 68. The actor will take a break to concentrate on his political entry and will also participate in the assembly election in 2026.

Thalapathy Vijay's recent actions, such as facilitating school toppers from different constituencies in Tamil Nadu, have been interpreted by some as indications of his political aspirations. The approach of selecting toppers from each constituency rather than each district has been seen as a strategy to expand his political influence across the state. Many have compared the actor to those of veterans like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.

There is no official word on this and Vijay is yet to make any official announcement. The news remains subject to speculation and interpretation.

Indeed, if Thalapathy 68 turns out to be the final film of the actor, it is expected to generate an immense amount of fanfare. Given Thalapathy Vijay's massive popularity and fan following, the anticipation and excitement surrounding his last film would likely be unprecedented in Tamil cinema.

The filming of Thalapathy 68 has not begun so far. It is expected to go floor later this year. At the moment he is gearing up for his next release Leo. Reports state that S J Suryah will be featuring in Thalapathy 68 alongside Vijay. The music for the film will be composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.

Tamil superstar Vijay's new film 'Beast' is all set for April 13 release. The highly anticipated film though will not be releasing in Kuwait, as cited by various media outlets.
'Beast' has been directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and is a hostage drama with Vijay playing the lead role. The film reportedly depicts Muslim characters as terrorists - which has been objected by the Kuwait government.
The film, therefore, has been banned in the country. Earlier Dulquer Salmaan's 'Kurup' and Vishnu Vishal's 'FIR' too had been banned for similar reasons.

Tamil star Vijay's film 'Beast' banned in Kuwait. Here's why

Tamil superstar Vijay's fans ensured that his film 'Master' trended on social media for almost the entire of 2021. As a result, the film has become the most tweeted Indian movie hashtag of 2021.

This shows the domination of Vijay and his fans on Twitter, as his movie hashtag has been on the top trends of the year for the fifth consecutive year.

Before this, the actor's films 'Mersal', 'Sarkar' and 'Bigil' have achieved a similar feat. 'Master has topped the Twitter trends for two consecutive years - 2020 and 2021.

This is the top most trending film of 2021 according to Google! Not a Salman or Akshay starrer

South cinema has dominated Twitter this year it seems.

Vijay's 'Beast' has also been in the top five of most tweeted-about movies of the year, and the film stands at number three. Ajithkumar's 'Valimai' and Suriya's 'Jai Bhim' stand at numbers 2 and 4 respectively.

MS Dhoni meets South Indian superstar Vijay, fans are losing it; pic

The Madras High Court has lashed out at actor Dhanush for having sought Entry tax exemption on a Rolls Royce car that he had imported in 2015. The Court questioned the rationale behind super-rich actors importing ultra-luxury cars and seeking tax exemption, while the common man pays taxes on everything from fuel to soap, without seeking any exemption. This case bears resemblance to that of actor Joseph Vijay who had been called “anti-national’ by the Court for having sought tax exemption on his imported Rolls Royce. Like Vijay had done in his petition, Dhanush too hadn’t revealed his occupation before the Court.

It is understood that the Commercial taxes department had asked Dhanush to pay Entry tax amounting to Rs.60.66lakhs, against which the actor had approached the Court for an exemption in 2015. Back then, the Court had instructed the Regional Transport Office to permit registration of the vehicle, on receipt of 50% of the Entry tax. Later, following the actor’s submission that Rs.30.33lakhs had been paid, the Court permitted the registration of the vehicle as per rules and regulations. Since then, the writ petition has been pending.

When this case came up for hearing before Justice S.M. Subramaniam on Thursday, he said that actors are entitled to buy even helicopters, but they have to pay taxes. He also added that Actors maybe entitled to file cases against tax demand, but they must have paid taxes in full, immediately after the Supreme Court settled the issue a couple of years ago. He also urged actors to act as responsible citizens, rather than continuing to ply their cars on roads laid with public money(taxes), without themselves paying taxes in full.

When the Dhanush’s counsel informed that the actor was willing to pay the taxes in full and sought permission to withdraw the plea the judge refused, as the matter was pending since 2015. The Judge also made a mention of the Vexatious Litigations, where a case is filed without any serious purpose or meaning(to abuse the Judicial process). He said that cases of this kind prevented the Court from allotting time to genuine cases and issues.

In 2020, actor Rajinikanth (who is also Dhanush’s father-in-law) had approached the Madras High Court over a Property Tax demand by the Chennai Civic Body. The issue pertains to a Property tax demand of Rs.6.5 lakhs made by the Greater Chennai Corporation for the months April-September on the Raghavendra Marriage hall, which the actor owns.

His counsel had stated that once the pandemic broke out and lockdown restrictions were imposed by Central and State Government, Rajini’s marrige hall had remained vacant and was not rented out since March 24th.

It was mentioned that the actor had cancelled all bookings at the marriage hall after March 24th (Lockdown 1) and even refunded the advance money in line with government instructions. The actor stated that he was entitled to vacancy remission and that he had sent a notice in this regard to the Corporation on September 23rd and that there was no reply.

When the Court warned Rajini of imposing costs(fine), Rajini tweeted out that he could have avoided a mistake and reached out to the Chennai Corportation over a Property Tax dispute, rather than approaching the Madras High Court.

After Vijay, Dhanush mired in luxury car tax-exemption row, Madras HC hits out

The Madras High Court imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on Tamil actor Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, for importing an ultra-luxury car Roll Royce Ghost from England and refusing to pay entry tax on it.

He has been asked to pay the fine amount to the Chief Minister’s Covid-19 relief fund within two weeks.

Despite being among the top-earning stars in Tamil cinema, Vijay had approached the court saying that "extraordinary" entry tax was being imposed on the car which he imported in 2012. He had sought that the court withhold the relevant authorities from demanding or collecting entry tax.

According to the court, the petitioner had not even revealed his occupation and had left the same categories blank in the affidavit.

The court noted that "the petitioner, who is a reputed cine actor, is expected to pay the tax promptly and punctually. Tax is a mandatory contribution and not a voluntary payment or donation, which one decides on one’s own".

It reminded the actor that the system of taxation is the backbone of our nation’s economy and that it funds social welfare projects such as schools, hospitals, housing projects for the poor etc. it was also added that the same tax ensured the development of infrastructure, besides social security such as pension for elders, welfare schemes etc.

Ironically, Vijay himself acts as a crusader for the downtrodden in his films and waxes eloquent on poverty, deprivation and inequality. He has mouthed many a dialogue on corruption, GST (Goods and Services Tax), social justice etc. The billionaire actor was also seen taking a moral high ground, by cycling to his voting booth during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in April this year. While many criticized it as a publicity stunt, his fans said that the actor was sending a message about rising fuel prices, by cycling to a nearby voting centre.

Referring to Vijay’s large fanbase and stature as an entertainer, the Court said, Cine heroes rose as rulers of the state and, therefore, people of Tamil Nadu are of the impression that they are the real heroes. Thus, they are not expected to behave like a reel hero. "Tax evasion is to be construed as an anti-national habit, attitude and minister and unconstitutional. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which does not align with the provisions of the Statutes " read the Court order.

Lashing out at the actor, the Court said filing a writ petition, avoiding payment of entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years, can never be appreciated. It is not made clear even now, whether the entry tax has been paid or not and neither has his lawyer said anything about the same. It reminded Joseph Vijay that while the actor purchased the world's most prestigious car for his usage, he has not shown any respect for the money he earns from his fans, which is poor man’s hard-earned money. The statement was also a stern warning to all rich and powerful individuals who are defaulting on tax.

The Court ordered Vijay to pay entry tax within two weeks, by adjusting 20% of Entry Tax as ordered by the Court in the interim order dated 17/7/12, if already paid. In the case of non-payment, the Court ordered the relevant authorities to initiate all actions for recovering the tax, as per the Statutes.

In this season of coronavirus pandemic, Netflix show 'Money Heist' has gained immense popularity. Fans across the world are now making a fantasy list of actors who could play the various characters of the show- if the show was to be ever remade in their country.

In India too, numerous names have popped up when one thought of an Indian remake. Now, the director of the show- Alex Riodrigo has himself named Indian actors who he would consider if ever he had to remake the show for the Indian audience.

Speaking to an online portal, the director said he was cast Tamil superstar Vijay or Ayushmann Khurrana in the Professor's role. He picks Ajith Kumar for the role of Bagota and Shah Rukh Khan as Berlin.

Interestingly, a few weeks earlier Ayushmann had expressed his love for 'Money Heist' and had publicly asked filmmakers to write a character like the Professor for him.

Alex picked Ranveer Singh and Mahesh Babu as Denver and Tamayo respectively and Suriya as Suarez.

The cast suggested by Alex seems quite varied and interesting. The director stated that he picked the actors according to the perception he has about them. He felt Vijay looked 'intelligent' like Professor and SRK looked handsome just like Berlin.

Vijay starrer 'Bigil' is facing troubles getting a digital release. A court in Hyderabad has issued an interim injunction order barring the digital release of the Tamil movie and its Telugu version 'Whistle' after a petition was filed by Hyderabad-based filmmaker Nandi Chinni Kumar, who had sought orders to stop its theatrical, satellite and digital release.

The film was scheduled to be screened on Amazon Prime Video later this month.

"The court had restrained Amazon Prime from uploading and streaming the film `Bigil/Whistle` on YouTube or other modes of the broadcasting system until further orders," Kumar told a news agency on Thursday.

Claiming that he had acquired exclusive copyrights for making a film on the life of slum-footballer Akhilesh Paul, Kumar had given complaints of copyright infringement against makers of 'Bigil' to the Telangana Cinema Writers Association, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Chennai.

Kumar filed a lawsuit against the film`s director Atlee and actor Vijay, apart from the film`s producers, stating they have violated a copyright agreement which he had signed with Akhilesh Paul.

He claimed that there are striking similarities between the main character and plot events of 'Bigil' and the exclusive life story copyright of Akhilesh Paul.

Kumar had earlier served a legal notice to Akhilesh Paul, Hindi movie 'Jhund' makers Nagraj Manjule, Bhushan Kumar (who is also CMD of T-Series), Savita Raj, and megastar Amitabh Bachchan. He alleged cheating, criminal intimidation, breach of contract and copyright infringement.

Kumar who is an independent filmmaker, also sent notice to Slum Soccer founder Vijay Barse, on whose life the film is said to be based on.

Alleging that he was cheated and criminally intimidated by makers of the film, Kumar plans to move the court to stop the screening of the movie in theatres, television and all digital platforms.

The filmmaker claims that he bought exclusive rights in 2017 to make a movie on the life of Akhilesh Paul, a slum soccer player who was the Indian captain at the Homeless World Cup.
