Leo Day 1 Collection: Vijay's film shatters box office records. Here's how much the film has earned

<p>When was the last time you saw a hero or lead character taking on and taming a wildly ferociously striped hyena, all with his bare hands? Perhaps, such an introduction sequence would have seemed great in a Bahubali-like film. It seems, Lokesh Kanagaraj felt it was apt to have Parthiban(Joseph Vijay), introduced in one-such Man vs Wild sequence, a glimpse of which already raised many eyebrows during the trailer release itself. After all, this is no fantasy or superhero film, this is Leo with normal flesh-and-blood characters, set in 2023. This scene would've felt cringe, even for the Vijay fans(perhaps, the pre-teen fans would enjoy it?). Maybe, showing the hero's love for wild animals was a way of establishing the wild animal that resides within the hero?</p>

<p>The brutality, motivations and meanness of the villain, are what make any hero-villain battle exciting and convincing. The hero's acts appear logical, only when the circumstances that push him/her to the edge are convincing enough. The fast-paced first-half of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo is completely convincing and portrays a happy family of four, who lead a calm and cozy life in the scenic heights of a town in Himachal Pradesh. Circumstances push a cafe-owner Parthiban(who is underestimated as someone selling bun and butter), to do the unthinkable. This not only disrupts the happy family but also sets the tone for what happens entirely thereafter. In the opening credits, the director also acknowledges the inspiration that the 2005 action-thriller film 'A History of Violence', had on Leo.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking of fans, Vijay delivers almost everything they would expect- multiple fight sequences, a grand dance with hundreds of artists, a considerable bit of cussing and whatnot. However, conspicuous in absence was an opening hero-worship-inducing track for Vijay, as has been common in most of his recent films.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Leo is no ordinary film. From a business perspective, it'll attract quite a wide basket- Vijay fans and Lokesh Kanagaraj fans(many of whom are showing up to find out whether this film fits in the Lokesh Cinematic Universe). <p>Director Gautham Vasudev Menon plays a supporting role in the film and appears as a Forest Range Officer. He is more like a friend, philosopher, and guide for Parthiban, who also happens to be a wildlife-rescue expert. At different junctures, when Parthiban faces tough times, Joshy Andrews(played by Menon) helps him out. Given how this role meanders through the film, one wonders if he is a Forest Officer or a Police Officer, or both.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the villain department, there are too many people to talk about. The one that felt the most convincing was the baddie who appeared in the first half of the film. His eyes, mean smile, and his gruesome actions appear amply convincing, without any additional effects and glamour to establish his character. He's the raw and unpolished criminal. Sadly for this film, the raw and unpolished villain seemed a better fit than the Range Rover-owning big boss (Sanjay Dutt) of baddies(who appeared in the second half), with his entourage of black SUVs and a townful of baddies. The villains in the second half appeared all things like the template villain - rich, mindless murderers, alcohol-gulping, exotic cigarette-smoking, stylish old men. While the respective actors played their roles well, the writing that established these villains didn't seem convincing at all.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Overall, it seemed like both Lokesh Kanagaraj and Vijay delivered most of the elements that they have been known for. However, the film feels deficient, to say the least. The director tries extra hard to fit this film into his cinematic Universe, but it feels blatantly force-fitted and counter-productive.</p>

The brutality, motivations and meanness of the villain, are what make any hero-villain battle exciting and convincing. The hero's acts appear logical, only when the circumstances that push him/her to the edge are convincing enough. The fast-paced first-half of Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo is completely convincing and portrays a happy family of four, who lead a calm and cozy life in the scenic heights of a town in Himachal Pradesh. Circumstances push a cafe-owner Parthiban(who is underestimated as someone selling bun and butter), to do the unthinkable. This not only disrupts the happy family but also sets the tone for what happens entirely thereafter. In the opening credits, the director also acknowledges the inspiration that the 2005 action-thriller film 'A History of Violence', had on Leo. The Court questioned the rationale behind super-rich actors importing ultra-luxury cars and seeking tax exemption, while the common man pays taxes on everything from fuel to soap, without seeking any exemption. This case bears resemblance to that of actor Joseph Vijay who had been called “anti-national’ by the Court for having sought tax exemption on his imported Rolls Royce. Like Vijay had done in his petition, Dhanush too hadn’t revealed his occupation before the Court.</p>

It is understood that the Commercial taxes department had asked Dhanush to pay Entry tax amounting to Rs.60.66lakhs, against which the actor had approached the Court for an exemption in 2015. Back then, the Court had instructed the Regional Transport Office to permit registration of the vehicle, on receipt of 50% of the Entry tax. Later, following the actor’s submission that Rs.30.33lakhs had been paid, the Court permitted the registration of the vehicle as per rules and regulations. Since then, the writ petition has been pending.</p>

When this case came up for hearing before Justice S.M. Subramaniam on Thursday, he said that actors are entitled to buy even helicopters, but they have to pay taxes. He also added that Actors maybe entitled to file cases against tax demand, but they must have paid taxes in full, immediately after the Supreme Court settled the issue a couple of years ago. He also urged actors to act as responsible citizens, rather than continuing to ply their cars on roads laid with public money(taxes), without themselves paying taxes in full.&nbsp;</p>

When the Dhanush’s counsel informed that the actor was willing to pay the taxes in full and sought permission to withdraw the plea the judge refused, as the matter was pending since 2015. The Judge also made a mention of the Vexatious Litigations, where a case is filed without any serious purpose or meaning(to abuse the Judicial process). He said that cases of this kind prevented the Court from allotting time to genuine cases and issues.&nbsp;</p>

In 2020, actor Rajinikanth (who is also Dhanush’s father-in-law) had approached the Madras High Court over a Property Tax demand by the Chennai Civic Body. The issue pertains to a Property tax demand of Rs.6.5 lakhs made by the Greater Chennai Corporation for the months April-September on the Raghavendra Marriage hall, which the actor owns.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court noted that "the petitioner, who is a reputed cine actor, is expected to pay the tax promptly and punctually. Tax is a mandatory contribution and not a voluntary payment or donation, which one decides on one’s own".&nbsp;</p>

<p>It reminded the actor that the system of taxation is the backbone of our nation’s economy and that it funds social welfare projects such as schools, hospitals, housing projects for the poor etc. it was also added that the same tax ensured the development of infrastructure, besides social security such as pension for elders, welfare schemes etc.</p>

<p>Ironically, Vijay himself acts as a crusader for the downtrodden in his films and waxes eloquent on poverty, deprivation and inequality. While many criticized it as a publicity stunt, his fans said that the actor was sending a message about rising fuel prices, by cycling to a nearby voting centre.</p>

Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading tax and acting in a manner, which does not align with the provisions of the Statutes " read the Court order.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lashing out at the actor, the Court said filing a writ petition, avoiding payment of entry tax and keeping the writ petition pending for about nine years, can never be appreciated. It is not made clear even now, whether the entry tax has been paid or not and neither has his lawyer said anything about the same. It reminded Joseph Vijay that while the actor purchased the world's most prestigious car for his usage, he has not shown any respect for the money he earns from his fans, which is poor man’s hard-earned money. The statement was also a stern warning to all rich and powerful individuals who are defaulting on tax.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;The Court ordered Vijay to pay entry tax within two weeks, by adjusting 20% of Entry Tax as ordered by the Court in the interim order dated 17/7/12, if already paid. On Vijay's birthday, fans want the makers to release the trailer of 'Master'

<p>In this season of coronavirus pandemic, Netflix show 'Money Heist' has gained immense popularity. Fans across the world are now making a fantasy list of actors who could play the various characters of the show- if the show was to be ever remade in their country.</p>

<p>Tamil actor would have never guessed what happened with him yesterday as Income Tax officials conducted a raid on two of his residences and questioned him for over five hours on the set of his upcoming film ‘Master’.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vijay who is popularly known as Thalapathy by his fans had a shocker on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After questioning, the actor is now being brought back to Chennai. This after the Income Tax officials conducted a raid in his properties in Neelangarai and Saligramam areas of Chennai.</p>

<p>It started with searched in as many as 38 locations in Tamil Nadu and unaccounted cash of about Rs 25 crore was seized from the premises of a Tamil film financier who had faced allegations of intimidation and arm-twisting to recover money, said official sources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officials have also procured some documents indicating substantial tax evasion.</p>

<p>This is the second step into the investigation of alleged tax evasion by AGS Cinemas, which produced Vijay’s latest film ‘Bigil’. <p>Vijay starrer 'Bigil' is facing troubles getting a digital release. A court in Hyderabad has issued an interim injunction order barring the digital release of the Tamil movie and its Telugu version 'Whistle' after a petition was filed by Hyderabad-based filmmaker Nandi Chinni Kumar, who had sought orders to stop its theatrical, satellite and digital release.<br />

The film was scheduled to be screened on Amazon Prime Video later this month.<br />

"The court had restrained Amazon Prime from uploading and streaming the film `Bigil/Whistle` on YouTube or other modes of the broadcasting system until further orders," Kumar told a news agency on Thursday.</p>

<p>Claiming that he had acquired exclusive copyrights for making a film on the life of slum-footballer Akhilesh Paul, Kumar had given complaints of copyright infringement against makers of 'Bigil' to the Telangana Cinema Writers Association, the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, the Tamil Film Producers Council, and the regional officer of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Chennai.</p>

<p>Kumar filed a lawsuit against the film`s director Atlee and actor Vijay, apart from the film`s producers, stating they have violated a copyright agreement which he had signed with Akhilesh Paul.</p>

<p>He claimed that there are striking similarities between the main character and plot events of 'Bigil' and the exclusive life story copyright of Akhilesh Paul.</p>

<p>Kumar had earlier served a legal notice to Akhilesh Paul, Hindi movie 'Jhund' makers Nagraj Manjule, Bhushan Kumar (who is also CMD of T-Series), Savita Raj, and megastar Amitabh Bachchan. He alleged cheating, criminal intimidation, breach of contract and copyright infringement.</p>

<p>Kumar who is an independent filmmaker, also sent notice to Slum Soccer founder Vijay Barse, on whose life the film is said to be based on.</p>

<p>Alleging that he was cheated and criminally intimidated by makers of the film, Kumar plans to move the court to stop the screening of the movie in theatres, television and all digital platforms.</p>

<p>The filmmaker claims that he bought exclusive rights in 2017 to make a movie on the life of Akhilesh Paul, a slum soccer player who was the Indian captain at the Homeless World Cup.</p>

<p>He claimed to have registered the story and script with Telangana Cinema Writers Association on June 11, 2018.</p>
