Lisa Cook’s attorney on Tuesday (Aug 26) said that she will file a lawsuit against US President Donald Trump, challenging her removal from the position of Federal Reserve Board Governor. This comes a day after Trump fired Cook after a Trump loyalist alleged that she had obtained mortgages on two homes while claiming they were her primary homes. The Fed governor said that Trump “has no authority” to remove her from the position.
‘Challenging illegal action’
“President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” the lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement on Tuesday. “His attempt to fire her, based solely on a referral letter, lacks any factual or legal basis.”“We will be filing a lawsuit challenging this illegal action,” Lowell said.If Cook sues Trump, the case could be sent to the Supreme Court to make a judgment. According to the Federal Reserve Act of 1913, a president can only fire a member of the Federal Reserve Board “for cause.” This has been interpreted by courts as malfeasance or dereliction of duty while being a board member.
What allegations is Cook facing?
Last week, the Justice Department opened a formal investigation into Cook after she was accused of making incorrect statements onlawsuit home mortgage applications by the Federal Housing Finance Agency chief Bill Pulte. He alleged that Cook claimed two different properties in Michigan and Georgia as her primary residences while obtaining mortgages in 2021, before she joined the Fed. Pulte claimed that Cook did so “in order to potentially secure lower interest rates and more favourable loan terms.”Following the allegations, Trump on Monday (Aug 25) in a letter to Cook informed her of her removal from the position.
‘I will not resign’
Responding to the matter, Cook said on Monday, “President Trump purported to fire me ‘for cause’ when no cause exists under the law, and he has no authority to do so.”“I will not resign,” she added. “I will continue to carry out my duties to help the American economy as I have been doing since 2022.”

Digital services taxes (DSTs) — once a technical fix for governments struggling to capture revenue from global tech giants — are back at the centre of a geopolitical storm. On August 26, 2025, US President Donald Trump warned that countries imposing such taxes could face tariffs and even restrictions on sensitive American exports, opening a new front in Washington’s long-running clash with foreign tax regimes.
What are digital services taxes?
DSTs are turnover-based levies, usually set at 1.5–6 per cent, imposed on the revenues large online companies earn from local users. They typically apply to online advertising, marketplace commissions, and the sale of user data. Governments argue these taxes close loopholes that allow digital firms to book profits abroad while drawing heavy revenues from local markets. The US has consistently opposed DSTs, calling them discriminatory because they mostly affect American firms such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple. Critics also warn that they risk double taxation until a multilateral deal under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is finalised.
Which countries have imposed DSTs?
Over the past decade, dozens of countries have introduced or debated DSTs. In Europe, the United Kingdom currently levies a 2% DST, while France, Italy, Spain, and Austria have designed their own national versions. Turkey and India have also put DST-like levies in place, with India’s “equalisation levy” targeting digital advertising and platform services. Outside these hotspots, countries from Brazil to South Korea have considered their own measures. Canada backed away from implementing a DST in June 2025 after Washington applied pressure, showing how US threats can alter policy.
Why Washington is threatening retaliation
The US has a long history of pushing back against DSTs. During earlier Trump and Biden administrations, Washington launched Section 301 trade investigations into countries imposing these taxes, concluding they unfairly targeted American firms. While tariffs were drafted, they were suspended as OECD negotiations advanced. Trump’s latest warning marks an escalation. In addition to tariffs, he raised the prospect of export controls on US technology — an unusually aggressive tool in disputes traditionally confined to tax and trade.
Which countries are most at risk?
If the US follows through, the countries most exposed include:United Kingdom still applies a 2% DST and was explicitly mentioned in reporting on Trump’s commentsFrance, Italy, Spain, and Austria – all have had DSTs under US investigationTurkey and India – both continue to impose their own digital leviesBrazil and South Korea have discussed DSTs and were flagged in US trade circles
What’s next?
The future of DSTs is tied closely to the OECD’s “two-pillar” tax framework, which aims to reallocate taxing rights and set a global minimum tax. Some governments see their DSTs as temporary measures until the OECD deal takes effect; others keep them as leverage. For Washington, however, unilateral digital taxes remain red lines. The US stance has already forced Canada to retreat. Whether European powers and India will do the same — or dig in for a transatlantic showdown — may depend on how far Trump is willing to go in weaponising tariffs against allies.

Is it four, five, or seven? US President Donald Trump seems to forget his own claims and change them. I said, ‘You want to trade? We are not doing any trade or anything with you if you keep fighting, you’ve got 24 hours to settle it’. They said, ‘Well, there’s no more war going on.’ I used that on numerous occasions. I used trade and whatever I had to use,” the US president said.

What did Trump claim earlier?
Last month, the Republican leader claimed that five planes were downed during the conflict between “two serious nuclear countries.” What’s more interesting is that Trump did not clarify which country shot down how many jets on both occasions.“We stopped a lot of wars. And these were serious, India and Pakistan, that was going on. Planes were being shot out of the air. Five, five, four or five, but I think five jets were shot down, actually,” Trump said, seemingly unsure of the number. “These are two serious nuclear countries, and they were hitting each other... India and Pakistan were going at it, and they were back and forth, and it was getting bigger and bigger, and we got it solved through trade.”

How many jets were shot down?
Earlier this month, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh confirmed that Indian forces downed at least five Pakistani fighter jets and another large aircraft in May during Operation Sindoor, which was launched in response to the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians. During the operation, India successfully targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The two nations reached an understanding of a ceasefire after four days of military conflict. The Air Chief Marshal added that Pakistani jets were shot down by the S-400 air defence systems, marking “the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill.”New Delhi has also rejected the repeated claims of mediation made by Trump, stressing that a ceasefire was reached bilaterally after a call from Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) to their Indian counterpart, and no third party was involved.

President Trump expressed willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-un again, citing their strong past relationship. Ahead of talks with South Korea’s president, he emphasised hopes to restart negotiations with Pyongyang.

US President Donald Trump on Monday (August 25) defended his administration’s multi-billion-dollar agreement with Intel, insisting he had “paid zero for Intel,” even though the deal saw the US government invest nearly $9 billion into the technology giant. “I paid zero for Intel, it is worth approximately $11 billion,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. “All goes to the USA. Why are ‘stupid’ people unhappy with that? I will make deals like that for our country all day long,” he added. Also read: 'Ukraine remains independent': Russian 'cyber partisans' hackers disrupt Russian TV broadcast with Ukraine war footage on Independence Day
What does the deal involve?
The agreement was finalised last week, with the government taking $8.9 billion worth of Intel shares. The Trump administration is preparing to remove the COVID-19 vaccine from the US market “within months,” according to claims made by one of Robert F. US President Donald Trump has once again set off a frenzy about his ongoing health conditions. There’s nothing like gold, and there’s nothing like solid gold.”Still, Infantino presented Trump with an oversized cardboard version of the “first ticket” for next year’s tournament final, which will be hosted outside New York City. 2026 FIFA World Cup draw to take place at Kennedy Centre says US President Donald Trump

US President Donald Trump on Friday (August 22) announced that the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup will take place at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. The president announced from the Oval Office. “Some people refer to it as the TRUMP Kennedy Center, but we are not prepared to do that. Maybe in a week or so,” the president was quoted as saying. The draw will take place on December 5, 2025. The US president was accompanied by FIFA President Gianni Infantino by his side. "It's the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports," the president further added. Also Read: The league of the new heroes: Why PKL season 12 feels different?

US President Donald Trump went on a furious late-night Truth Social posting spree on Truth Social, unleashing against in-mail voting, MSNBC and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The tirade stretched past midnight, like every time, claiming himself to be the victim of political witch-hunting. It started with applause f the Texas state, which has approved a new territory delineation, giving the Republican Party five more seats. He called for other states to follow the same, and then went on to attack mail-in voting, which he called “a total fraud that has no bounds”, and asked to eliminate it. Thus resulting in net “100 more seats" for Republicans in Congress.

Trump's set of erratic posts continued with bragging about his approval rating of 59% which he claims is a massive lead over the Democrats. However, reports suggest no such polls give him that rating. Then he swiftly moved on to attack the California Governor, whom he called ‘Gavin Newscum’. Trump claimed that Gavin is way down in the polls. “He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!! President DJT,” wrote Trump. Gavin Newsom's office responded with three snowflakes. Gavin had been copying his style of social media posting to trigger the right-wing figures.

After midnight, Trump targeted MSNBC, which is going through a corporate divorce separating from NBC, and it will be known as MS NOW. Trump posted in all caps, “THEY ARE LOOKING TO CHANGE THEIR NAME IN ORDER TO GET AWAY FROM THE STENCH OF THEIR FAKE NEWS PRODUCT.”

In his most recent post, he accused Democrats of cheating in votes, and claimed freedom for Tina Peters a politician from Colorado. “FREE TINA PETERS, a brave and innocent Patriot who has been tortured by Crooked Colorado politicians, including the big Mail-In Ballot supporting the governor of the State. Let Tina Peters out of jail, RIGHT NOW. She did nothing wrong, except catching the Democrats cheat in the Election. She is an old woman, and very sick. If she is not released, I am going to take harsh measures!!!” read the post.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has agreed to hold trilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, but only if Kyiv is given security guarantees.

‘Aim to hold trilateral meeting’: Zelensky says ready to meet Putin but on THIS condition

In the span of just four days, President Donald Trump has orchestrated a dramatic diplomatic pivot that has transformed the Ukraine peace process from a distant hope into an active negotiation. What began as Trump's reversal from demanding a ceasefire to Putin's preferred "peace agreement" approach has evolved into something far more sophisticated—and potentially more dangerous.
The Alaska awakening
Trump's August 15th summit with Vladimir Putin in Alaska marked the first direct negotiations at this level "for a long time," according to the Russian leader. But what emerged from those talks wasn't capitulation—it was calculation. After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday and an unprecedented gathering of European leaders at the White House, Trump announced plans for a direct Putin-Zelenskyy meeting, followed by trilateral talks. This isn't the impulsive dealmaking critics feared. It's a methodical three-step strategy that leverages America's unique position as the only power capable of bringing both warring parties to the table.
The security guarantee revolution
The real breakthrough isn't territorial—it's defensive. Trump secured Putin's agreement that Russia would accept "robust security guarantees" for Ukraine, with European leaders describing this as "Article 5-like" protections similar to NATO's collective defense provision. Ukrainian officials expect these guarantees to be "formalized on paper within the next week to 10 days," including a massive Ukrainian purchase of American weapons worth approximately $90 billion. This represents a fundamental shift from previous peace efforts. Unlike the failed Minsk agreements or the hollow Budapest Memorandum, Secretary of State Marco Rubio is now leading a working group with European allies to draft concrete security proposals. As NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told Trump: "The fact that you have said that I'm willing to participate in the security guarantees is a big step. It's really a breakthrough."
Putin's calculated gamble
Critics who claim Trump was manipulated in Alaska misunderstand Putin's position. The Russian leader demanded maximalist territorial concessions, including all of the Donetsk region, and at one point "seemed so firm on his demand that Trump was ready to walk away". Putin's willingness to accept security guarantees suggests he recognises that military conquest has reached its limits. With 20,000 Russian soldiers killed in July alone, Moscow faces an unsustainable attrition rate. Putin's agreement to eventual negotiations indicates he understands that Ukrainian officials are correct when they say "Russia will not take Donbas—not in months, not in years" due to Ukraine's heavily fortified defensive positions.
Europe's United Front
The unprecedented gathering of seven European leaders—including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz—at the White House demonstrated unprecedented unity. Starmer described "real progress" and "material outcomes on security guarantees," while Macron emphasised the significance of the US commitment to developing security plans. This European solidarity provides crucial leverage. Trump ruled out U.S. ground troops but left the door open for other support, acknowledging that "European countries would form the first line of defense" while "we'll be involved".
The strategic imperative
As Trump administration officials emphasised on Sunday shows, "the only way to end this war is to get the Russians to agree—as well as the Ukrainians—but the Russians to agree to a peace deal". The reality is stark: "In order for there to be a peace deal... both sides are going to have to give up something in order to get to the table."But this isn't appeasement—it's strategic realism backed by deterrent force. The proposed security framework would create the first credible guarantee against future Russian aggression since the Cold War ended.
The Nobel question reframed
Rather than pursuing peace for legacy purposes, Trump appears to be leveraging his unique relationship with Putin to achieve what his predecessors could not: a settlement that both sides can accept and the West can enforce. Trump's whispered comment to Macron—"I think [Putin] wants to make a deal for me, you understand that? As crazy as it sounds"—suggests he understands the personal dynamics at play.
The bottom line
Ukraine's offer to purchase $90 billion in U.S. weapons as part of security guarantees demonstrates this isn't about abandoning Kyiv—it's about creating a sustainable deterrent framework. As Zelenskyy noted after his White House meetings: "We had constructive, specific meeting… we are happy we have such big unity today."Trump's approach carries enormous risks. Territorial concessions could reward aggression and encourage future conflicts. But the alternative—indefinite warfare with mounting casualties—offers no guarantee of better outcomes. The next phase will determine whether Trump's diplomatic gambit produces the "lasting peace" he promises or becomes another chapter in the long history of failed negotiations with Moscow. With Putin-Zelenskyy talks now "underway" according to the White House, we'll know soon enough whether this represents genuine breakthrough or dangerous miscalculation. The stakes couldn't be higher—for Ukraine, for Europe, and for Trump's presidency. History will judge whether this moment marks the beginning of sustainable peace or the prelude to an even more devastating conflict.

Trump's Ukraine peace gambit: From Nobel dreams to strategic reality

US President Donald Trump has said he chose not to call Russian President Vladimir Putin in front of European leaders at the White House because he felt it would be “disrespectful.” “I didn’t do it in front of them, I thought that would be disrespectful to President Putin. And, we had a very good call, and I told him that we’re going to set up a meeting with President Zelensky, and you and he will meet. And then after that meeting, if everything works out OK, I’ll meet and we’ll wrap it up,” he added. What is Trump pushing for in Ukraine? Trump stressed that any deal to end the war must involve Zelensky directly. “But you know, it takes, in this case, two to tango. They have to have somewhat of a relationship. Otherwise, we’re just wasting a lot of time. I don’t want to be doing that. I just want to end it,” Trump said. He added, “I hope President Putin is going to be good. If he’s not, that’s going to be a rough situation. And I hope Zelensky, President Zelensky, will do what he has to do. He has to show some flexibility also. The thing is a mess.”

President Trump said he avoided calling President Putin in front of European leaders at the White House, calling it “disrespectful,” and claimed Putin wouldn’t speak with them due to strained relations.

US President Donald Trump repeated on Monday that he has “ended six wars” and is now pushing for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. Speaking to reporters, Trump suggested that stopping the Ukraine-Russia conflict could be his next big breakthrough. “I thought this maybe would be the easiest one,” he said. He has also promoted himself as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.
How real are his six wars claim?
Trump’s team later confirmed the list of conflicts he claims to have resolved, even adding a seventh. But in reality, some of these peace efforts remain incomplete, and in a few cases, the fighting has continued. Two of the examples date back to his first term, including one where no formal deal was ever signed.
Armenia and Azerbaijan
In August, leaders from Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a peace agreement at the White House. Trump declared the two countries would “be friends a long time.” The deal even names a transit route after him, the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity.” But both Iran and Russia strongly objected to the agreement.
Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda
In June, the DRC and Rwanda signed a peace agreement in Washington. Trump hailed it as a “new chapter of hope and opportunity.” Yet, within weeks, both sides accused each other of breaking the truce.
Israel and Iran
Trump ordered strikes on Iran during a short war in June, before brokering a ceasefire with Israel. The White House says the action set back Iran’s nuclear programme, but critics point out that the U.S. was an active combatant.
India and Pakistan
Following the Pahalgam attack and India's retaliatory strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' in May, Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. However, India has repeatedly denied that Washington had any role in halting the fighting.
Cambodia and Thailand
A brief border war between Cambodia and Thailand ended after US pressure. The two countries agreed to a ceasefire in July, though both sides accused each other of fresh attacks soon after.
Egypt and Ethiopia (first term)
Trump also counts his earlier intervention over Ethiopia’s dam project on the Nile as a success. No peace deal was ever signed, and the dispute continues today.
Serbia and Kosovo (first term)
Back in 2020, Trump’s administration brokered an economic normalisation deal between Serbia and Kosovo. But tensions over recognition and borders remain unresolved.
Where things stand now?
While Trump has indeed helped broker talks and agreements, many of these conflicts are far from permanently settled. Wars in Ukraine and Gaza continue despite his promises to end them.

Donald Trump claimed he ended six wars and aims to broker peace between Ukraine and Russia, calling it potentially his “easiest” success. His team listed seven conflicts, though several remain unresolved or ongoing, with some lacking formal agreements.

‘Ready to work towards trilateral summit’: European leaders back Trump’s plan for talks between US, Russia, Ukraine

First Lady Melania Trump, in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, told him, "you can singlehandedly restore" the "melodic laughter" caught in the throes of the Russia-Ukraine war. In a deeply moving letter hand-delivered to Putin by her husband, US President Donald Trump, Melania urged for peace. On Friday (Aug 15) it was revealed that Donald Trump has delivered a letter from his wife, Melania, to his Russian counterpart. While it was known that the letter had to do with the children in Ukraine and Russia, the exact content of the letter was not public knowledge…till now. The letter was released on X by Attorney General Pam Bondi. Here's what it said.
What did First Lady Melania Trump say to Putin?
The First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) in an emotional letter urged Putin to bring peace amid the Russia-Ukraine war. Appealing to the Russian leader to think of the war's youngest victims, she wrote, "Every child shares the same quiet dreams in their heart, whether born randomly into a nation's rustic countryside or a magnificent city-center. They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger.""As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation's hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few," said the FLOTUS. She stated that, "I am sure you agree, is that each generation's descendants begin their lives with a purity - an innocence which stands above geography, government, and ideology. Yet in today's world, some children are forced to carry a quiet laughter, untouched by the darkness around them — a silent defiance against the forces that can potentially claim their future."

"Mr. Putin, you can singlehandedly restore their melodic laughter." Calling on Putin to act beyond national interests, she added: "In protecting the innocence Of these children, you will do more than serve Russia alone — you serve humanity itself." Urging Putin to sign a ceasefire deal, she said, "Such a bold idea transcends all human division, and you, Mr. Putin, are fit to implement this vision with a stroke of the pen today."
'No deal'
Despite the profound, emotional letter, the buildup to the Trump-Putin Alaska summit was all for nought, as a ceasefire was not achieved. The outcome of the much-anticipated meet can be summed up by a remark Trump made at a press conference after huddling with Putin for three hours: "No deal until there’s a deal". The high-stakes summit in Anchorage concluded on Friday (Aug 15) without a formal agreement on ending the war. However, both leaders still termed it “very productive” at their joint press conference, at which they refused to take any questions from the press. Also read | Melania Trump sent Putin letter on Ukraine’s ‘stolen children’ during Alaska summit.

Ukraine caught in the middle after Trump-Putin talks
After the inconclusive Alaska meeting, Kyiv was left trying to understand what exactly had been discussed between Trump and Putin. Zelensky later revealed he had a “long and substantive” call with Trump, joined by European leaders, where “the main points” were covered. Zelensky confirmed he would travel to Washington on Monday “to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war.”
Trump shifts stance on ceasefire demand
But while Zelensky hinted at cautious optimism, Trump complicated matters with a post on social media. He urged a direct peace agreement without first securing a cease-fire, insisting Zelensky and European leaders had agreed to the idea. This marked a major shift from the principles agreed upon earlier in the week, when Trump, Zelensky, and European allies had vowed not to enter peace talks until a ceasefire was in place. Russia has long pushed for direct peace talks that could include territorial concessions, without halting its military operations in the meantime.
Zelensky treads carefully on peace plan
In response, Zelensky avoided directly contradicting Trump. “We need to achieve a real peace that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions,” he said. But he added that “the killings must stop as soon as possible, and the fire must cease both on the battlefield and in the air, as well as against our port infrastructure.” His comments suggested that Kyiv still sees a ceasefire as the first step towards peace.
Europe avoids clash with Trump
European leaders did not repeat their earlier demand for a ceasefire in their weekend statements, though they did not explicitly drop it either. The omission appeared to be an effort to avoid clashing publicly with Trump. Italy’s prime minister Giorgia Meloni said Trump had also proposed new “security guarantees” for Ukraine, modelled on NATO’s collective defence principle, which would commit allies to act if Russia attacked again.
Territorial concessions back in play
Trump also told Fox News that “territorial swaps” were among the points “largely agreed on” during discussions. He has repeatedly suggested that concessions would be necessary for a deal, a position that Zelensky has resisted. However, Zelensky has not dismissed the idea completely, telling reporters this week that land swaps are “a very complex issue that cannot be separated from security guarantees for Ukraine.”

US President Donald Trump has signalled support for a plan that would see Ukraine hand over parts of its territory to Russia in return for a peace deal, according to a report by The New York Times. The move came after he met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. Trump told European leaders that he was no longer pushing for an immediate ceasefire, but instead wanted a peace treaty to be reached quickly, provided Ukraine agreed to cede the remainder of the Donbas region, including areas not under Russian control. Also read: Putin told Trump Russia would end war if Ukraine gave up THIS region: Why it’s so important?
What is Ukraine’s position?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders have strongly rejected the idea. Officials in Kyiv stressed that no final settlement can involve Ukraine giving up sovereign land permanently, since this would breach the country’s constitution. The Donbas region is not only strategically important for Ukraine’s defences but also rich in minerals, making it vital for Kyiv to keep it under its control.
What did Putin offer in return?
In exchange, Putin reportedly offered a ceasefire along current battle lines and a written pledge not to launch further attacks against Ukraine or European countries. But European officials reminded Trump that the Russian leader has often broken written commitments in the past. Putin also demanded that Russian be restored as an official language in Ukraine and that Russian Orthodox churches receive added protection, officials said.
How did Europe react?
European leaders emphasised to Trump that international borders cannot be altered by force and insisted that sanctions on Russia will remain until the war ends. While Trump made no mention of further sanctions or economic pressure during his calls, officials said he highlighted the possibility of strong security guarantees for Ukraine after any settlement, though not under NATO. He suggested that American troops could play a role.
Will there be a trilateral meeting?
Trump is expected to raise the plan directly with Zelensky at the White House on Monday, with European leaders invited to join. He has also spoken of the possibility of a three-way meeting with Putin and Zelensky. However, Putin has so far refused to meet Zelensky, whom he continues to dismiss as the leader of what he calls an “artificial country”. The White House has not commented on the talks.

US President Donald Trump claimed that Chinese President Xi Jinping assured him China would not launch an invasion of Taiwan while he is in office. In an interview with Fox News’ Special Report on Friday, Trump said, “I will tell you, you know, you have a very similar thing with President Xi of China and Taiwan, but I don’t believe there’s any way it’s going to happen as long as I’m here. We’ll see.” He added, “He told me, ‘I will never do it as long as you’re president.’ President Xi told me that, and I said, ‘Well, I appreciate that,’ but he also said, ‘But I am very patient, and China is very patient.’”Also read: 'Nothing can be decided without Ukraine': Zelensky tells Trump no peace deal without Kyiv as Europe backs trilateral summit with Putin
When did Trump and Xi speak?
Trump confirmed that he and Xi had their first official call of his second presidential term in June.
