NATO buying weapons for Ukraine? Trump says US will sell arms to European allies to aid Kyiv amid Russia war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Thursday (July 10) that Kiev had received positive "signals" from the United States administration about new weapons supplies after his telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump. He said Ukraine received “a timetable and details of weapons supplies,” as reported by news agency Reuters. According to Zelensky, Germany and Norway have committed to finance three more Patriot defense systems for Ukraine, with Berlin covering two and Oslo one. As talks aimed at securing a Gaza ceasefire enter their third day in Doha, two different timelines are being presented by US President Donald Trump and Qatar, one of the key mediators in the process. President Trump, speaking during a White House meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said he believed both Hamas and Israel “want to have that ceasefire,” and added he was “hopeful for it very quickly.”However, Qatar’s spokesman said, “I don’t think that I can give any timeline at the moment, but I can say right now that we will need time for this,” ministry spokesman Majed Al-Ansari said during a news conference in Doha.
Whose timeline holds up?
Al-Ansari explained that the talks had not formally begun yet. “What is happening right now is that both delegations are in Doha. We are speaking with them separately on a framework for the talks. So talks have not begun, as of yet, but we are talking to both sides over that framework,” he said. Despite Trump’s optimism, the Qatari spokesman’s comments suggest that key issues still need to be settled before negotiations can fully begin.
The goal: 60-day ceasefire and hostages deal
The current proposal on the table includes a 60-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, along with the release of 10 living hostages and the remains of 18 others. Negotiators from both sides, along with Qatari and Egyptian mediators, have been in Doha since Sunday. The White House has said that its envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to travel to Doha as early as Tuesday to help move the talks forward. “We have an opportunity to finally get a peace deal – I am hopeful for it very quickly,” Witkoff said at the beginning of Trump’s meeting with Netanyahu.Ahead of his White House dinner with Trump, Netanyahu also met separately with Witkoff and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to discuss the terms of a potential deal. Trump is said to be pushing hard for a breakthrough in Gaza, and reportedly wants to finalise an agreement with Netanyahu directly.
US also planning nuclear talks with Iran
In a related development, Trump confirmed the US is preparing for a meeting with Iranian officials “in the next week or so” to discuss a potential nuclear deal. Witkoff has been in discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi about holding the meeting in Oslo. If it goes ahead, it would be the first direct contact between the US and Iran since their 12-day war with Israel ended earlier this year. “I hope the war with Iran is over. I think they want to meet and make peace,” Trump said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet Monday US President Donald Trump, who expressed hope for a "deal this week" between Israel and Hamas that sees hostages released from the Gaza Strip. Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas began on Sunday evening in Doha, aiming to broker a ceasefire and reach an agreement on the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Trump said Sunday there was a "good chance" of reaching an agreement. "We've gotten a lot of the hostages out, but pertaining to the remaining hostages, quite a few of them will be coming out," he told journalists. Netanyahu, speaking before boarding his flight to Washington on Sunday, said his meeting with Trump could "definitely help advance this" deal. The US president is pushing for a truce in the Gaza Strip, plunged into a humanitarian crisis after nearly two years of war. Netanyahu said he dispatched the team to Doha with "clear instructions" to reach an agreement "under the conditions that we have agreed to." He previously said Hamas's response to a draft US-backed ceasefire proposal, conveyed through Qatari and Egyptian mediators, contained "unacceptable" demands. ‘Important mission’ Two Palestinian sources close to the discussions told AFP the proposal included a 60-day truce, during which Hamas would release 10 living hostages and several bodies in exchange for Palestinians detained by Israel. However, they said, the group was also demanding certain conditions for Israel's withdrawal, guarantees against a resumption of fighting during negotiations, and the return of the UN-led aid distribution system. Netanyahu has an "important mission" in Washington, "advancing a deal to bring all our hostages home," said Israeli President Isaac Herzog after meeting him Sunday. Trump is not scheduled to meet the Israeli premier until 6:30 pm (2230 GMT) Monday, the White House said, without the usual presence of journalists. Of the 251 hostages taken by Palestinian militants during the 2023 attack, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Since Hamas's October 2023 attack sparked the massive Israeli offensive in Gaza, mediators have brokered two temporary halts in the fighting. They have seen hostages freed in exchange for some of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli custody. Recent efforts to broker a new truce have repeatedly failed, with the primary point of contention being Israel's rejection of Hamas's demand for a lasting ceasefire. ‘Enough blood’ In Gaza, the territory's civil defense agency reported 26 people killed by Israeli forces on Sunday, 10 of them in a strike in Gaza City's Sheikh Radwan neighborhood. "We are losing young people, families and children every day, and this must stop now," Sheikh Radwan resident Osama al-Hanawi told AFP. "Enough blood has been shed." Media restrictions in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by the civil defense agency. Contacted by AFP, the Israeli military said it could not comment on specific strikes without precise coordinates. Hundreds killed seeking aid The war has created dire humanitarian conditions for the more than two million people in the Gaza Strip. A US- and Israel-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), took the lead in food distribution in the territory in late May, when Israel partially lifted a more than two-month blockade on aid deliveries. But its operations have had a chaotic rollout, with repeated reports of aid seekers killed near its facilities while awaiting rations. UN agencies and major aid groups have refused to cooperate with the GHF over concerns it was designed to cater to Israeli military objectives. The UN human rights office said last week that more than 500 people have been killed waiting to access food from GHF distribution points. The Gaza health ministry on Sunday placed that toll even higher, at 751 killed. Hamas's October 2023 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed at least 57,418 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. US President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Patriot air defence systems could be supplied to Ukraine, as Russian missile strikes on cities continue to escalate.

US President Donald Trump has once again suggested that Patriot air defence systems could be supplied to Ukraine, as Russian missile strikes on cities continue to escalate. Speaking to reporters on Saturday (5 July), Trump said, “They’re going to need something because they’re being hit pretty hard”, referring to the intensifying aerial assault from Russian forces.

What are Patriot missiles? Trump may send Ukraine the US’s ‘100% effective’ shield

US President Donald Trump’s ‘big, beautiful’ tax cut and spending bill has been passed in both the House and the Senate. As part of its provisions, it is expected to bring sweeping changes to the government's Medicaid healthcare program, which covers about 71 million low-income people in the United States. The earlier policies, from the Biden and Obama administrations, aimed at easier access to healthcare for millions. According to the Congressional Budget Office estimates, nearly 12 million more people to be without insurance by 2034 after Trump signs the legislation due to reductions in federal support for Medicaid and Affordable Care Act. This would undermine the finances of hospitals, nursing homes, and community health centres, as they will need to absorb more costs of treating uninsured people. Some may cut on services and employees, while some may even shut down. Here are key healthcare provisions under the bill:
Mandatory work
Currently, Medicaid enrollees are not subject to work requirements. Under the new bill, Medicaid enrollees would have to work, do community engagement activities or attend school for a minimum of 80 hours to qualify for the programme. They will have to regularly file paperwork, ensuring they are meeting the new requirements, which are set to start in January 2027. This would end coverage of millions of people who do not meet the new standards.
More frequent checks for eligibility
The states will be required to conduct a check to see if people still qualify for Medicaid twice a year instead of once. This would affect about 20 million people who got enrolled through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) expansion, which includes those making around $21,600 a year or less in 2025. The new bill would also prevent people from being eligible to sign up for Medicaid in more than one state at the same time.
Stricter rules for states
Money raised for the Medicaid programme was often raised from taxes imposed on hospitals and healthcare providers until now. The new bill would restrict how much money states can collect from these taxes. It would also impose stricter rules about which services can be taxed and how the money is distributed across providers. This could make it harder for states to get extra federal money, which may lead to funding cuts, especially in rural areas. Although the bill includes a $50 billion fund for rural hospitals.
Immigrants rules
Mediciad is currently eligible for some immigrants who are legally in the US after a five-year wait. However, under the new bill, refugees, some abused spouses and children, and people granted asylum will not be eligible.
Cost-sharing requirements
Currently, Medicaid gives states an option to charge nominal co-payments for people with incomes over 150 per cent of the federal poverty level. The new bill would mandate co-pays for people earning more than 100% of the federal poverty level, which would reach up to $35 per medical service, with some exemptions including emergency and preventive care.

US President Donald Trump has talked about deportation of tech giant Elon Musk and New York's Democratic mayor candidate Zohran Mamdani in the recent days. Trump said he will look into the possibility of deportation or denaturalisation. While he had a fallout with his former ‘buddy' Musk over ‘big and beautiful’ tax and spending bill, he targeted Mamdani after New York Democratic Primary and called him ‘100% Communist Lunatic." Many from Trump’s team and his supporters have spoken about deportation, but is it really possible as per the laws of the United States? Here's what we know:
Can Elon Musk be deported?
Elon Musk, originally from South Africa, became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2002 after first coming to the U.S. on a student visa in the 1990s. Prior to that, he was a citizen of Canada. Accusations that Musk was in the U.S. illegally during the early stages of his career have circulated, including a 2005 email in which Musk reportedly said he applied to Stanford University simply because he otherwise had "no legal right to stay in the country." Musk never enrolled and instead started his first company, Zip2.Steve Bannon, Trump’s former advisor, has claimed Musk entered the US illegally and called for his deportation. He also suggested Musk’s alleged drug use warrants suspension of his security clearances. Musk has denied claims he was in the US illegally, calling his status at the time ‘a legal grey area’. However, denaturalizing a US citizen—specially one who has held citizenship for over two decades—is extremely rare. So, only if Trump and his team can prove that Musk entered US fraudulently - can there be a case for denaturalisation. The question here is whether or not Musk lied to the US government during the process of becoming a citizen. The process of denaturalisation is also lenthy. It would begin with the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) sending such a case to the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ then files a revocation of naturalization actions (for civil denaturalisation cases) or criminal charges (for criminal denaturalisation cases) in federal court. A defendant can either defend themselves or renounce US citizenship. If the person is stripped of their citizenship, their status returns to that he or she had prior to becoming a citizen. In case their immigration status is unlawful, they can be deported immediately.
Can Zohran Mamdani be deported?
Republicans have called for Zohran Mamdani's deportation after he won the New York Democratic Primary. During an interview with Fox News, Trump's press secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about Republican Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee, who has called for denaturalisation proceedings against Mamdani, partly based on rap lyrics Mamdani allegedly wrote in 2017 referencing "terrorism." Leavitt responded, “Well, I’ll let the president speak to that. I have not seen those claims, but surely, if they are true, it’s something that should be investigated.” Meanwhile, other Republicans have made racist remark against Mamdani and have asked him to leave the US with Representative Brandon Gill telling the mayoral candidate to “go back to the Third World” after seeing him eat with his hands. However, Mamdani deportation is more of a political call as there is no legal basis. Zohran Mamdani obtained citizenship in 2018, he enjoys the same constitutional protections as any other citizen, whether natural-born or naturalized. Deportation laws primarily apply to non-citizens such as permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Once citizenship is granted, it is very difficult to reverse unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Mamdani has not been accused of any crimes or fraudulent behaviour related to his naturalisation that would justify stripping him of his citizenship. Here too, similar to Musk, the only process is denaturalisation, but there is no evidence that Mamdani lied or committed fraud during their naturalisation, or was involved in criminal activity prior to becoming a citizen that was concealed, or engaged in actions such as supporting terrorism or violent overthrow of the government. Even if there would have been one, the government must prove its case convincingly in federal court.
Trump vs Musk
Musk and Trump renewed their fight - this time about the EV subsidy in the United States of America. The war of words broke out after the Tesla boss posted non-stop about Trump's ‘big beautiful bill’, stating that a new ‘America Party’ will be launched if the bill is passed. In response, Trump said that he would have to return to South Africa if he didn't get EV subsidies in the US. Later, while he was on his way to Florida’s Alligator Alcatraz, a reporter asked Donald Trump whether Musk would be deported after he criticised Trump’s tax spending bill. He said, “I don’t know. We’ll have to take a look.” He also jokingly mentioned that he may deploy the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to investigate the Tesla CEO saying, “DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.” He added, "We'll have to take a look. We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? The monster that might have to go back and eat Elon. Wouldn’t that be terrible? He gets a lot of subsidies,” said Donald Trump.
Trump vs Mamdani
Trump said during a Tuesday press conference at a detention center in Florida referred to as “Alligator Alcatraz” that if Mamdani prevents ICE agents from conducting their operations to deport people, then "we’ll have to arrest him." He also mentioned false claims that Mamdani entered the country illegally. On a question of Mamdani's possible deportation, Trump said, “We’re going to be watching that very carefully, and a lot of people are saying he’s here illegally. We’re going to look at everything.” In a sharp response, Mamdani, who has won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, has said that he will not accept this "intimidation." In a statement on X, Mamdani said that he was threatened by the US president not because he broke any law but because he refuses to let ICE "terrorise the city."

Top 10 world news: Sean Diddy Combs found not guilty; Netanyahu vows to eliminate Hamas, and more

President Donald Trump strongly defended his ‘big, beautiful’ bill after it barely passed in the Senate, in a post on his social media Truth Social and emphasised that the bill will bring “growth” to the US, even though it is estimated that the bill would grow the national deficit by $3.3 trillion through 2034, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office. Trump’s $3.3 trillion tax and spending cut bill passed the Senate on Tuesday. Senators voted 51-50 to pass the bill after Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, as three Republicans — Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Rand Paul of Kentucky, defied Trump to oppose the legislation. The package, which now goes to the House, combines $4.5 trillion in tax cuts with $1.2 trillion in spending cuts. The “One Big Beautiful Bill” includes the entirety of the president’s legislative agenda in a single package. Trump personally lobbied lawmakers to quickly move the legislation through Congress.“It’s a great bill. There is something for everyone,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday. “And I think it’s going to go very nicely in the House. Actually, I think it will be easier in the House than it was in the Senate.”
‘Our Country will make a fortune this year,’ says Trump
Defending his bill, Trump said in a post, “Nobody wants to talk about GROWTH, which will be the primary reason that the Big, Beautiful Bill will be one of the most successful pieces of legislation ever passed. THIS GROWTH has already begun at levels never seen before. Trillions of Dollars are now being invested into the USA, more than ever before. Likewise, hundreds of Billions of Dollars in Tariffs are filling up the coffers of Treasury. The Tariff money has already arrived and is setting new records! We are growing our way out of the Sleepy Joe Biden MESS that he and the Democrats left us, and it is happening much faster than anyone thought possible. Our Country will make a fortune this year, more than any of our competitors, but only if the Big, Beautiful Bill is PASSED!”

“As they say, Trump’s been right about everything, and this is the easiest of them all to predict. Republicans, don’t let the Radical Left Democrats push you around. We’ve got all the cards, and we are going to use them. Last year America was a “DEAD” Nation, with no hope for the future, and now it’s the “HOTTEST NATION IN THE WORLD!” MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he added. A recent Pew Research survey found that 49% of Americans oppose the bill, while 29% support it and 21% aren’t sure.Trump then came up with another post on Truth Social, where he spoke highly of the bill.

House to vote on bill this week
The House is expected to vote on the bill this week, but success is not guaranteed. Only a few Republicans can vote “no” in the House for the bill to pass in the face of united Democratic opposition. Speaker Mike Johnson said the House “will work quickly” to pass the bill by July 4. House Speaker Mike Johnson seeks to quell an internal revolt over the changes made by the Senate in the bill that goes back to the House, where Johnson has said the Senate “went a little further than many of us would have preferred” in its changes, particularly to Medicaid, which provides healthcare to low-income and disabled Americans.

We will not accept this intimidation.” “That Trump included praise for Eric Adams in his authoritarian threats is unsurprising, but highlights the urgency of bringing an end to this Mayor's time in City Hall. On a question of Mamdani's possible deportation, Trump said, “We’re going to be watching that very carefully, and a lot of people are saying he’s here illegally. We’re going to look at everything.”

Trump uses F-word
Ahead of boarding Air Force One to attend the NATO Summit in the Netherlands, Trump angrily said, when asked about violation of ceasefire by Israel and Iran, "The two countries have been fighting so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing, do you understand that?" Trump on June 24 declared that a ceasefire had been agreed between Israel and Iran and war had stopped, but both countries violated it soon after Trump's announcement and fired missiles at each other. This was a major upset for Trump, who angrily warned Israel against bombing Iran and lost his cool in front of reporters.

Last Week the POTUS had left the White House for the NATO summit at The Hague and had uttered the F-word while slamming Israel and Iran for violating the ceasefire. Now he has abused Joe Biden.

I think it’s crazy,” Trump said on Tuesday.
Mamdani refuses to ‘police’ free speech
The slogan in question is often used to express support for Palestinian resistance, but it has drawn criticism from Jewish groups who believe it could encourage violence. Mamdani told NBC’s Meet the Press that while the phrase was not language he would personally use, he said, “I don’t believe the role of the mayor is to police speech.” This refusal to denounce the slogan sparked Trump’s reaction.Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-born Muslim and son of filmmaker Mira Nair, caused a political earthquake last week when he defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary. His win electrified progressives and drew thousands of younger voters through a campaign centred on high rent, inequality, and public services. But his past criticism of Israel and support for wealth redistribution have made him a target for Republicans, and especially for Trump. “I think he’s terrible. He’s a communist,” Trump said. He added, “And I think I’m gonna have a lot of fun watching him, because he has to come right through this building to get his money.”

Speaking ahead of a visit to a Florida immigration detention facility nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz”, Trump was asked about Mamdani’s controversial remarks on the anti-Zionist slogan “globalise the intifada”.

We will have a communist in for the first time, really a pure, true communist. He wants to operate the grocery stores. The department stores. What about the people who are there? I think it’s crazy,” Trump said on Tuesday. Mamdani refuses to ‘police’ free speech The slogan in question is often used to express support for Palestinian resistance, but it has drawn criticism from Jewish groups who believe it could encourage violence. Mamdani told NBC’s Meet the Press that while the phrase was not language he would personally use, he said, “I don’t believe the role of the mayor is to police speech.” This refusal to denounce the slogan sparked Trump’s reaction. Mamdani, a 33-year-old Ugandan-born Muslim and son of filmmaker Mira Nair, caused a political earthquake last week when he defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary.

Who is the hacker group 'Robert'?
The hackers who operate under the pseudonym Robert materialised in the final months of the 2024 presidential campaign. At the time, they claimed to have breached the emails of a few of trump allies, including Wiles. They then distributed the emails to journalists. As per Reuters, it managed to authenticate some emails, including one which appeared to be a financial agreement between Trump and Robert F. Kennedy, who is now Trump's health secretary. Other material released at the time included a discussion of settlement negotiations between Trump and Daniels. In September 2024, the US Justice Department, in an indictment, alleged that the Robert hacking operation was run by Iran's Revolutionary Guards. Donald Trump ranted against former US president Barack Obama after Sen. Chris Coons (D-Delaware) compared the former's Israel-Iran negotiations to Obama's Iran agreement. Now he is being mocked on social media for his outburst and the "noise" he is known to make about everything. On Monday morning, Trump took to Truth Social to proclaim loudly that comparing him with Obama is almost criminal. Trump wrote, "Tell phony Democrat Senator Chris Coons that I am not offering Iran ANYTHING, unlike Obama, who paid them $Billions under the stupid 'road to a Nuclear Weapon JCPOA (which would now be expired!), nor am I even talking to them since we totally OBLITERATED their Nuclear Facilities." Notably, Coons suggested that the Trump administration is considering entering into deal with Iran similar to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) struck by former President Obama. He was discussing on Fox News the US strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities. Coons suggested that the Trump administration is mulling a $30 billion deal with Iran that would allow for the development of civilian nuclear facilities.
What did Coons say about Trump and Iran?
“I’ll just note that President Trump, by press accounts, is now moving towards negotiation and offering Iran a deal that looks somewhat similar to the Iran deal that was offered by Obama, tens of billions of dollars of incentives and reduced sanctions in exchange for abandoning their nuclear program,” Coons said in his Sunday interview. Trump went berserk over the suggestion and called Coons a "SleazeBag". "Never heard of this ridiculous idea,” the president wrote late Friday on Truth Social. Also Read: Musk continues tirade against Trump's Big Beautiful Bill. "Trump barking again: 'We obliterated Iran's nuclear facilities.' Reality check: You obliterated nothing but your own credibility. Iran never begged you, and never will. You were never open for diplomacy — only for Israel's script... The harsh truth? You weren't feared — just ignored. History will remember your threats as noise, not strategy." Another user called Trump an "utter clown" for making noise about his role in the Iran-Israel crisis. One person couldn't believe that the president of a country broke protocol to toot his own horn even before officials could confirm that anything had happened. "He violated a military standard by immediately suggesting success without waiting for intelligence level confirmation. He is truly unhinged."

US President Donald Trump has become the subject of mockery on social media for shouting at the top of his lungs about everything he does. Trump is angry and irritated after he was compared to Barack Obama by Senator Chris Coons.

Here's what he says now Social media mocks Trump Meanwhile, Trump's tirades and the habit of shouting about everything he does in the world are making him a subject of mockery on the internet. His repeated use of the word "OBLITERATED" especially came under fire. A user wrote on X, "Who in the world taught them this word 'OBLITERATED'?" https://www.wionews.com/videos/trump-envoy-continues-communication-with-iran-white-house-1751337889365/embed Another user cited how Trump was wrong about everything he claims to have done.

'Will hear from President Trump and his team very soon...': White House confirms US-India trade deal in final stages

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the reporters during the briefing on Monday (June 30). Speaking about Trump's effect on the economy, Karoline said, “This is a president who was a businessman first and he knows what he's doing. He has a proven economic formula that worked in his first term and it's working again.”

US President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social. He said, “Jerome “Too Late” Powell, and his entire Board, should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen to the United States. They have one of the easiest, yet most prestigious, jobs in America, and they have FAILED — And continue to do so. If they were doing their job properly, our Country would be saving Trillions of Dollars in Interest Cost. The Board just sits there and watches, so they are equally to blame. We should be paying 1% Interest, or better!” On being asked about what is the President's confidence level in getting 218 votes in the house by the end of this week in order for him to sign it on Friday, Karoline replied by saying, "Well, we are very well aware, the President is very well aware that this needs to not only pass out of the senate, but it needs to go back to the House and we need the full weight of the Republican conference to get behind the bill. And we expect them to and we are confident that they will. The President has been working hand-in-hand with Senate Majority Leader Thune and also our House Republican leader — or the Speaker of the House, I’m sorry — Mike Johnson. Both of whom will be at the White House today to meet with the president yet again. I believe they were here this morning actually.” “1.4 million illegals will be off of Medicaid if Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill passes,” she further added. Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during the press briefing on Monday (June 30) also confirmed that President Donald Trump will going to the opening of Alligator Alcatraz in Florida on Tuesday (July 1).

Harvard University is facing the threat of a complete loss of federal funding after a Trump administration task force found it failed to protect Jewish students from harassment and discrimination. The investigation concluded the Ivy League institution breached civil rights laws, putting its federal funding in jeopardy unless it makes immediate changes.
Antisemitic harassment allowed to “fester,” says federal probe
A letter sent to Harvard on Monday by a federal task force accused the university of being a “willful participant in anti-Semitic harassment of Jewish students, faculty, and staff.” The investigators said campus officials failed to address growing concerns over antisemitism, allowing it to thrive in Cambridge. The findings mean Harvard has violated federal civil rights laws that require universities to protect students from discrimination based on race or national origin. According to the Associated Press, the letter warned that “failure to institute adequate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources.”
Harvard already lost $2.6 billion in federal funds
Even before the release of the investigation, the Trump administration had already cut off more than $2.6 billion in federal funding to Harvard. The funding freeze followed Harvard’s rejection of Trump’s demands for widespread reforms in university hiring practices, governance, and admissions policies.
Foreign students ban deepens conflict
Tensions escalated further when Trump moved to ban Harvard from enrolling international students, revoking the university’s certification under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. As a result, new foreign students were blocked from joining Harvard, and existing ones faced either transferring or losing their legal immigration status.Trump defended the move by arguing that foreign enrolment was keeping American students out of top schools. “I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15%, not 31%,” he said. “We have people who want to go to Harvard and other schools, but they can’t get in because we have foreign students there.”
Harvard fights back in court
In response, Harvard filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, calling the ban on foreign students unconstitutional and politically motivated. In June 2025, Iran’s Shi’ite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Naser Makarem Shirazi, issued a fatwa declaring US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as 'enemies of God'. According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency, Shirazi urged Muslims to unite against leaders he said posed a threat to the Islamic Republic’s religious authority. He stated that any person or government endangering Iran’s Supreme Leader or top clerics, referred to as Marja, should be treated as a 'mohared', or one who wages war against God. This incident has reignited global debate over the power and peril of fatwas.
What Is a Fatwa?
A fatwa is a formal legal opinion or interpretation issued by an Islamic scholar on a point of Islamic law (Sharia). It’s also the wealthiest city in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, and yet 1 in 4 New Yorkers are living in poverty, and the rest are seemingly trapped in a state of anxiety,” Mamdani said.

Bill Ackman, a billionaire who has backed President Donald Trump in the past, has pledged to use his money to bankroll a challenger to Mamdani in the general election. “[Mamdani’s] policies would be disastrous for NYC. Socialism has no place in the economic capital of our country.

Tension between the United States and Iran has increased to the highest point after decades following the order of President Donald Trump to strike the key nuclear facilities across the Middle Eastern country. Conflictss between these nations are not new. Iran has always remained one of the greatest adversaries of the US since the 1979 Islamic revolution, after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini threw pro-Western Mohammad Reza Pahlavi out of power in Tehran.Since then, the region has always remained heated, beginning with the conflicts on the issue of oil production to nuclear ambitions, Iran’s backing of proxies in the region, and US political interference. Trump was dragged into the recent war after Israel, considering Iran a nuclear threat, launched unprecedented strikes across the country, accusing Tehran of developing nuclear weapons. So, how has Iran always remained a target of the US? What is the real history behind this war? Was Iran a threat to the US or other nations else US begin war and always target Iran with the influence of colonial rulers (England) for its own selfish purpose?Let's delve into the timeline of the history of both nations' conflicts and know the facts:
(1953) CIA-Backed Coup and Return of the Shah:
Tensions between Iran and Western powers escalated when Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, elected in 1951, initiated steps to nationalise the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, an enterprise largely under British control since the early 20th century. This move to take control of Iran’s oil resources infuriated Britain, prompting it to seek American support. In response, the US Central Intelligence Agency collaborated with British intelligence to orchestrate a coup that ousted Mosaddegh and reinstated Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the previously exiled monarch, as shah.
(1957) Civilian nuclear agreement – Atoms for Peace:
Iran’s interest in developing nuclear energy began to take shape under the Shah’s leadership, with significant backing from the United States and its allies. In 1957, the two nations entered into a nuclear cooperation agreement under US President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s "Atoms for Peace" initiative. This agreement was aimed at promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology. By the late 1960s, the US had supplied Iran with a nuclear research reactor and uranium fuel, laying the groundwork for Iran’s current nuclear programme and the global debates that followed.
(1979) Islamic revolution:
While relations between Tehran and Washington were increasing, people of Iran were agitating under the dictatorship of the shah, demanding the removal of Western influence in the nation. Revolutionary protests also began rocking the country in late 1978, which forced the shah to flee in January 1979. As a result, the exiled Islamic scholar Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to power in Iran as the new Islamic Republic.
(1980) Diplomatic break with the US:
After the United States permitted the exiled Shah of Iran to receive cancer treatment, Iranian students stormed the American embassy in Tehran, taking 52 hostages and holding them for 444 days. In response, the US severed diplomatic relations and implemented economic sanctions. The former shah eventually died in exile.
(1980–1988) US support for Iraq in war:
When Saddam Hussein launched a military assault on Iran, aiming to weaken Ayatollah Khomeini’s revolutionary influence, the US aligned itself with Iraq. This decision escalated hostilities between Washington and Tehran. The brutal conflict continued until 1988, causing massive casualties on both sides, with Iraq even deploying chemical weapons against Iranian forces.
(1984) Iran labelled terror sponsor:
Amid increasing regional unrest, President Ronald Reagan designated Iran as a "state sponsor of terrorism" following deadly attacks in Lebanon, where US troops were stationed after Israel’s incursion. One of the deadliest assaults, on a US Marine barracks in Beirut, killed 241 American personnel. Washington attributed the attack to Hezbollah, a militant group with Iranian support. Despite this, Reagan’s administration later covertly negotiated with Iran for the release of hostages held by Hezbollah — a revelation that sparked the infamous Iran-Contra scandal.
(1988) Civilian plane downed by US Navy:
Amid escalating military tensions in the Persian Gulf, a US Navy warship mistakenly shot down Iran Air Flight 655 en route to Dubai on July 8, killing all 290 people aboard. Although the US called the incident an error, it neither issued a formal apology nor accepted full responsibility. However, it eventually compensated victims' families with a payment totalling $61.8 million.
(1995) Sanction against Iran:
US's sanctions against Iran escalated between 1995 and 1996 as then President Bill Clinton’s executive orders banned US companies from making any deal with Iran. Meanwhile, the Congress also passed a law penalising foreign entities from making any kind of investment in the country's energy sector or selling Iran advanced weapons. Meanwhile, the US also went for nuclear advancement and support of groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad.
(2002) Post-9/11 tensions:
In the wake of the September 11 attacks, US President George W. Bush labelled Iran, Iraq, and North Korea as an “Axis of Evil” during his State of the Union speech. This declaration came despite Iran and the US having cooperated covertly at the time to combat mutual enemies, including the Taliban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan. However, the relationship quickly deteriorated, and by late 2022, Iran was found to possess highly enriched uranium, prompting renewed international sanctions.
(2013–2015) Iran’s Nuclear Agreement:
Beginning in 2013, President Barack Obama initiated direct negotiations with Iran, which culminated in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The deal, also signed by China, Russia, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the European Union, required Iran to restrict its nuclear enrichment to 3.67 per cent in return for sanction relief.
(2018) US Exit from JCPOA:
In 2018, President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the JCPOA, reinstating sanctions on Iran. The move was supported by Israel and criticised the agreement’s effectiveness. In response, Iran abandoned its nuclear restrictions under the deal and resumed uranium enrichment beyond agreed limits.
(2019) The US designates Iran’s military institution as a terrorist org:
The US designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the most powerful military institution of Iran, as a terrorist organisation. Following this, it has become the first time that the Americans assigned such a classification to a part of a foreign government.
(2020) Assassination of Qassem Soleimani:
In one of the most escalatory moves of Trump’s presidency, Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad. The assassination followed the US decision in 2019 to designate the Quds Force as a terrorist organisation. Iran retaliated with missile attacks targeting American bases in Iraq.
(2025) Letter to Tehran and US attack:
Trump sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in March demanding new negotiations on a nuclear deal, giving deadlines of 60 days. During the negotiations, Khamenei rejected the proposal, viewing it as the US trying to dictate terms. The discussions had quietly begun in countries like Oman and Italy, with Muscat playing a mediating role. Former US President Donald Trump stated that his administration had come “very close” to reaching an agreement after several dialogue rounds, even cautioning Israel against military actions.Iran remained cautiously hopeful but firmly maintained its right to continue uranium enrichment, which remained a major point of contention. A day before the sixth round of US-Iran negotiations, Israel carried out airstrikes across Iranian territory.Shortly after, the US joined the Israeli assault, targeting three of Iran’s major nuclear sites, including Fordow and Natanz. This offensive included the first combat use of America’s most powerful "bunker-buster" bomb. In retaliation, Iran launched missile strikes on the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, which hosts US forces. Qatari officials later confirmed the missiles were intercepted and that the base had been evacuated ahead of the attack.
