The Berlin film festival on Saturday awarded its Golden Bear top prize to a documentary by French director Nicolas Philibert and its best acting award to an eight-year-old girl in what jury chief Kristen Stewart described as a "boundary-pushing" event.

"On the Adamant", coming more than 20 years after Philibert's acclaimed education documentary To Be and To Have, is about a floating day-care centre for people with psychiatric problems on the Seine in Paris.

Thanking the jury, Philibert, 72, said "that documentary can be considered to be cinema in its own right touches me deeply".

On a night full of surprises, the festival's gender-neutral acting prize was awarded to an eight-year-old, Spain's Sofia Otero.

The young actress won the prize for playing a transgender child in 20,000 Species of Bees, the feature debut from Spanish director Estibaliz Urresola Solaguren.

Critics have lavished praise on the film. Screen Daily, for one, predicted that "arthouse audiences worldwide should respond to the pathos, breadth and humanity of a film that takes a while to build but, when it does, never loses its grip".

Otero, who fought back tears when collecting the award, later told journalists she was "very grateful, very happy".

'Invisible parameters' -

Stewart, at 32 the youngest president in the festival's history, said the jury had been asking themselves all week "what makes a movie a movie".

They had set aside "invisible parameters" in awarding the Golden Bear, she said, because "when you focus too much on what something is you tend to lose track of what it does.

"This is a boundary-pushing festival and so it offers us the opportunity to be expansive in how we define those things, how we value works of art, how we categorise them," she said.

There was more success for France as Philippe Garrel, 74, won the Silver Bear for best director for The Plough, a drama about three siblings from a family of puppeteers coping with the death of their father.

Garrel dedicated the prize to his children and to French-Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard, "a great master for many of us", who died last September.

Second prize went to "Afire" from German director Christian Petzold, about a group of friends whose holiday retreat to the Baltic coast goes horribly wrong.

Variety called it "wincingly well-observed and acidly funny", while the Hollywood Reporter said it was "a deceptively simple and straightforward but emotionally layered film".

Coming in third was "Bad Living" by Portugal's Joao Canijo, about several female members of the same family who run a dilapidated hotel and are also struggling with their relationships to one another.

- Star power -

"On the Adamant" offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of adults and their carers in the Parisian day-care centre, which puts an accent on offering them a creative outlet.

The film is "an attempt to overturn the image we have" of people with psychiatric problems, Philibert said.

"The cliches are deep-rooted. The film tries to unravel them (but) there is a long way to go."

The Hollywood Reporter praised the film's "warmth and enthusiasm", calling it "a portrait of several individuals who, despite their noticeable disabilities, are capable of producing original and moving works of art".

French President Emmanuel Macron congratulated both Philibert and his subjects on the win, calling the film a "story of humanity and commitment".

Documentaries are regularly selected in major international film competitions, but rarely win awards.

Last year, the Venice Film Festival awarded its Golden Lion to a documentary about the opiate crisis in the United States by Laura Poitras (All The Beauty And The Bloodshed).

After two years of a reduced format due to pandemic restrictions, the 11-day Berlinale got back in full swing this year, with A-listers such as Cate Blanchett, Helen Mirren and Steven Spielberg walking the red carpet.

The festival, which ranks alongside Cannes and Venice as one of Europe's top cinema showcases, also marked the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine and highlighted anti-government protests in Iran with new feature films and documentaries.

In Japan, police have cordoned off a beach after discovering a mysterious ball on the sand. As per local media reports, authorities are worried that the object might be a sea mine of some kind. RT News reports that the object was first spotted on Monday (February 20th) morning by a local woman in the city of Hamamatsu in the Shizuoka Prefecture. The object reportedly measures around 1.5 metres (4.9 feet) in diameter and, based on the rust on its surface, is believed to be made of iron. However, the exact metal is yet to be identified. Police have cordoned off a 200-meter radius around the object.

The mysterious ball may have washed ashore from the sea. Pictures and videos of the object have widely been shared on social media websites. They show that the ball has two latching points on opposite ends.

A fresh survey of Japan's territory has yielded 7,000 new islands. As per Kyodo News, after the Japanese government's first official survey of its territorial waters since 1987, the official number of Japan's islands is expected to double from 6,852 to 14,125, with the addition of 7,272 new islands.

The new survey which was conducted by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan will not increase the nation's territory. Rather, it would, as per the NY Post, give officials a more accurate picture of Japan's territory.

Why did Japan conduct this survey after more than 30 years?

This, as per Kyodo News, was apparently spurred by a member of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. In December 2021, the party member told the nation's Parliament that there was a need for an accurate understanding of the number of islands because the data was old and not updated. According to them, it was an "important administrative matter that is related to the national interest."

As per Lifestyle Asia, the survey actually detected over 100,000 islands. However, only those with a circumference of 100 metres or higher were taken into account.

Now, the Japanese government will soon come up with more accurate figures of the country's terrain. The latest number of islands will also have to be updated on all official documents and textbooks, etc. As per the current estimates, Japan, a country with an estimated population of around 124,840,000, has a land mass of around 146,000 square miles.

In Japan, a country regularly subjected to volcanic activity and extreme weather, the discovery of new islands isn't that surprising; previously, geographers have reported the formation of new islands and the disappearance of others.

Science has progressed leaps and bounds; for couples and even singles who are looking to have children, there are a variety of methods available. One of these is sperm banks. Country singer-songwriter Kyle Jacobs, the husband of former 'American Idol' contestant Kellie Pickler, has passed away. He was 49. As per the authorities, Jacobs died of an apparent suicide in their home. As per the statement, Pickler called 911 after she and her assistant were not able to open the door of the room, where Jacobs shot himself, reportedly. The emergency department got the call from Kyle's home on Friday at 12:21 p.m. (local time). Soon after, police and the Nashville Fire Department arrived at the location and found the songwriter "deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," they said in the statement, via People. "His death is being investigated as an apparent suicide." The 'Dancing with the Stars' contestants have told the investigative department that when they woke up, they couldn't find Jacobs. Later, when she and her personal assistant were not able to open the door to a room in the house, they called the police. Just a day before his death, Jacob shared the good news about singer Brice Lee’s album: "Platinum?! SWEEEET!!! An amazing crew of incredibly talented peeps put this one together…Deeply honoured to be a creative part of it…Thank you Jesus!!!''
The clip, which starts off with the text "Sanjay Leela Bhansali invites you to the world where courtesans were queens," gives a glimpse of all the divas one by one, starting with Manisha Koirala, Aditi, Sharmin, Richa, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and, in the end, Sonakshi Sinha. All are dressed in graceful golden yellow anarkalis, except Sonakshi, who is wearing a saree.
The caption of the video reads, "Another time, another era, another magical world created by Sanjay Leela Bhansali that we can't wait to be a part of. Here is a glimpse into the beautiful and intriguing world of Heeramandi. Coming soon."

A letter that was supposed to be delivered to its destination a century ago, has finally been delivered now. The letter was originally sent in 1916, at its intended address in Hamlet Road, south London. The owner of the house, Glen received the letter after a century, but recently took it to the local historical society, so that further research could be done. Finally, Glen told CNN, "we noticed that the year on it was '16. So we thought it was 2016." He added that he noticed that there was a stamp of a King and not a Queen, so he felt that it couldn't have been 2016.

His Fall-Winter 2023 parade saw several models wear round, low-hanging belts in a nod to the 88-year-old Steinem's signature look.

Shah Rukh Khan's 'Pathaan' is still earning big at the box office. The film, which featured Khan as an action hero for the very first time is inching closer to the Rs 1000 (10 billion) mark. Sidharth Anand's directorial venture was released in the theatres on January 25 and within three weeks of its release, the film entered the coveted Rs 500 crore club (5 billion) club, domestically.

So far, the film has crossed Rs 970 crore and we go by the reports the film will cross Rs 1000 crore (10 billion) soon.

However, the film did see a drop at the start of this week but saw a huge jump on Valentine's day.

After taking 'KGF 2' lifetime collection in the Hindi belt, the film has surpassed SS Rajamouli’s 'Baahubali 2'.

However, beating Salman Khan's 'Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and Aamir Khan's 'Secret Superstar', the film has also become the fifth highest-grossing Indian film.

'Pathaan' is SRK's first big screen release as a lead star in four years. His last film 'Zero' was a box-office disaster.

The film also features Dimple Kapadia and Ashutosh Rana in pivotal roles. And, also has Salman
Khan in a cameo appearance as Tiger.

The film might see a decline in numbers after the release of Kartik Aaryan's 'Shehzada' and the MCU's 'The Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania.'

WION's film critic Shomini Sen gave the film a positive review. She wrote, "Does 'Pathaan' work despite the flaws? Yes, because of Shah Rukh Khan and the image he has so carefully cultivated over all these years. His character is an orphan who has been raised in an orphanage who never had a religion to follow. He was named Pathaan by a family in Afghanistan which saved him during a covert operation. 'Pathaan' the film does diss any religion but only the bad guys and makes SRK the superhero who places his country above all religious fanatism. Pretty much similar to how Khan has projected himself all these years."

AI comes up with 40,000 toxic chemicals in 6 hours; scientists warn could be used to make biological weapons

In recent days, ChatGPT has been everywhere. People have used it to write valentine's day poems for their beaus, used it for their assignments, scholarly papers and in a very surprising twist, even used it to come up with potential bio-weapons. But amid all the fuss around this Artificial Intelligence powered chat, a section of the internet has also pointed to a bias this alleged "woke" chatbot holds. Several users have taken to social media sites to shine the spotlight on what Daily Mail calls ChatGPT's "distinctly liberal viewpoint." Apparently, the chatbot would rather let millions die due to a nuclear attack than use a racial slur. This doesn't seem like a bad thing, but as per tech genius, Twitter CEO Elon Musk, this is concerning. Confused? Here's what happened.

A Twitter user, Aaron Sibarium, who is a reporter, and a podcaster, posed to the chatbot a moral dilemma. He painted a scenario where a person held in their hand the power to save millions from a nuclear attack but to do this; they have to use a racial slur.

The little tuxedo-wearing penguins of today were once huge. Don't believe us? Well, a new study has revealed this amazing bit of information. The flightless bird that today, on average, weighs 22 to 45 kilogrammes, was once a whopping 154 to 159 kg; this makes it thrice the weight of the Emperor Penguin, the largest member of the species today. The now-extinct penguin species, called Kumimanu fordycei or K fordycei, inhabited New Zealand about 57 million years ago, which means they existed a few years after dinosaurs were wiped off the face of this planet. The findings by the international team of researchers have been published in the Journal of Paleontology.

The fossil of this penguin and another species were discovered a few years back, between 2016 and 2017. They were among the 57 million-year-old beach boulders in North Otago, on New Zealand's South Island.
