-Review based on the first four episodes -

If you look at director Avinash Arun's other projects like Killa, Three Off US, and Unpaused, the one common thread that you will see is how human emotions and feelings have always been a primary focus of his projects. His recent project, the web series School of Lies, is no exception. Released on Disney Plus Hotstar, the eight-episode series is a rollercoaster ride of emotions - loneliness, fear, and freedom.

Said to be inspired by real-life events, the show is set in the foggy and hilly Dalton Town and revolves around a bunch of school kids studying at the boarding school named River Isaac School of Education. From the first frame, the series arouses curiosity and successfully maintains momentum. The episodes do leave you with a feeling of emptiness and several questions in your mind. How's the show, and more importantly, is it a new feather in Avinash's shiny cap? Let's find out.

The Main Plot

Set in a hilly, misty area with beautiful landscapes, it helps the makers to make the premise more eerie. The show is set in a boarding school named River Isaac School of Education, where twelve-year-old Shakti Salgaonkar (Vir Pachisia) suddenly goes missing from the school. While finding Shakti is the main focus, there are also multiple stories running parallel with obscure secrets.

The other part of the show focuses on actor Aamir Bashir, who is playing the role of house master Sam, and two final-year students, Vikram (Varin Roopani) and TK (Aryan Singh Ahlawat), who are living under the guidance of their house master. On the surface, they seem to be playing by the book but the trio has their own secrets hidden.

There is also Nimrat Kaur, who plays the role of a counsellor, Nandita Mehra. Her personal life is completely distorted by some past traumas that she's still fighting through. However, she herself contributes to unravel the mystery behind Shakti's disappearance and starts interacting with the young lads as she finds the complexities that this young generation is going through.

What is good, and what's not

Avinash Arun's show is dark, nuanced, and full of suspense that will keep you hooked throughout. The show's main focus is on the children's emotions and the turmoil that they go through in their teenage years and how parents, amid the chaos of their own lives, ignore the red flags given by their children until it's too late.

As I said before, the show is high on suspense and will keep you hooked with multiple questions continuously running through your mind. But at the same time, the eight-part show has few loopholes that dampen the viewer's enthusiasm. Although the show is well written, focusing on so many characters, and stories but the hidden dark past or mysterious connection to every character is slightly confusing and distracts the audience's focus.

The script by Ishani Banerjee, Nishant Agarwala, and ShoaibNazeer, is well-layered and has addressed major issues like child abuse, bullying, the feeling of loneliness and their hunger for freedom in a very effective way.

The length of each episode is decent, but it takes a lot of time to settle, and due to so many unnecessary side stories running parallel, it takes a lot of time to comprehend the plot.

Till episode four, Nimrat's character has not been explored much, and it seems like she's just a star addition to draw the audience's attention.

How's the cast?

The performance of the young boys is commendable - whether it is Vir Pachisia, Varun Roopani, or Aryan Singh Ahlawat. They have all given excellent performances and are the gems of the show. Bashir, Nimrat, Nitin Goel, and Sonali Kulkarni, have also delivered decent performances.

Final verdict

Addressing serious topics like child abuse, past trauma, and bullying, among others, Arun's show has a very tense vibe and leaves you with mixed feelings. All in all, the performances, the cast and screenplay and the set-up of the show are decent and will leave you with a middling feeling.

The show is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.

School Of Lies review: This gripping series will leave you with a mixed feeling

Rihanna continues to slay with her maternity fashion looks. Days after she bared it all in her new photoshoot, the songstress shared a new set of pictures of herself. However, this time her look was more of a simple and cool chic type, but what attracted the eyeballs was the line that was inscribed in her oversized shirt.

Rihanna's new chic look

On Thursday, the pregnant singer shared a carousel of pictures wearing a black oversized t-shirt, black short tights, and white boots. However, her look was simple and cool, but the words written on her loose-fitting shirt garnered hilarious reactions.

The words on the shirt read, ''Use a condom.''

She completed her look with her new band look, white sunglasses, and a pair of golden earrings and bracelets.

Big B's apology

Bachchan apologised for making a glaring error in his recent tweet. On Sunday, the actor addressed his tweet in which he mentioned a song ''Blowin' in the Wind''. However, the error he made was that he mentioned in his tweet that the song is by the Beatles, but the hit track is actually by the singer Bob Dylan.

Calling himself an Idiot, Bachchan wrote in his blog post, ''Oh dear .. left very early for work and have had to time to meet the Ef here .. and I am desperately trying to finish the work so I can be at the GOJ in time ..But before that, a correction .. my apologies .. and my gratitude to the most efficient Ef for pointing it out to me."

He also added, "The 'the answer my friends is blowing in the wind …' is NOT the Beatles .. its Bob Dylan .. yes of course .. such an idiot I am .. so do excuse the error .. shall correct it immediately .. till then my love."

The song is from Bob Dylan's 1963 album ''The Freewheelin.''

Amitabh's original tweet

On Saturday, the Bhootnath actor tweeted, "There are moments in life when you give .. give because you wish to .. no compulsion, no reward expected, no reason .. just to give ..Do I do wrong .. do I announce .. do I make that public .. do I seek aggrandisement from the others or the moral social attribute givers of the Universe .. ? ''The answer my friend is written in the Wind .. the answer is written in the Wind~ the Beatles (he struck off the two words) an atrocious error .. ~ its BOB DYLAN !!!!!"

He wrote in the tweet further, "And so in this realm of uncertainty and resolve .. we survive .. and see the unfortunate that do not .. puzzled and remorse .. why they .. how they .. why the lag the difference the defined alienation .. they did some wrong .. the others did some right .. ? who decided that for them and who for the others .. ?"

However, this is not the first time the actor has been trolled for his social media post.

On the work front

Amitabh Bachchan is currently working on Project K co-starring Deepika Padukone and Prabhas. Helmed by Nag Ashwin, the movie is expected to release in two parts. The first part of the film will reportedly release in 2024.

However, now the actor is working on his health and body, "I swim a mile a day at least, sometimes two miles a day. Every day, seven days a week," he said. "And then I row and I do weights."

Apart from movies, and fashion, Cannes Film Festival has been one of the platforms for voicing protests and making strong political statements. Days after a woman dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag staged a protest on the iconic stairs of the festival, on Friday, Iranian-born model Mahlagha Jaberi made a strong political statement against mass executions in Iran.

For the people of Iran

Showing solidarity with the people of Iran against the horrific spree of executions, Mahlagha Jaberi walked the red carpet of the international film festival wearing a dress that might attract the world's attention to the worrisome situation in Iran.

Jaberi showed up on the red carpet wearing a black bodycon dress. However, what made people's heads turn was the collar of the dress, which was a beige rope that was attached to her dress in the shape of a noose. Jila Saber designed her dress.

Jaberi shared a montage video of her wearing the dress with a message reading, ''Stop execution.''

France's Triet becomes third female director to win Cannes' top prize

An online fraud scheme run via WhatsApp link and a fraudulent app fuelled by a rumours promising substantial profits from buying virtual animals, like pigs, ducks etc., has cost hundreds of thousands of rupees to villagers in India's state of Bihar. As reported by Boom Decode, the scheme had lured people to invest in pigs and other livestock online through a game, with the expectation of high returns.

Here's all you need to know:

How it all started

The origins of the online scam can be traced back to a WhatsApp message that circulated in Bihar, claiming that purchasing animals online could yield profits of up to thousands of rupees within a few months. The message propagated the idea that an online game called ‘Smile Rancher’ helped a middle-aged man win big by "investing" in the online purchase of livestock. As per the claims, the man won INR 20 lakh or $2 million.

The scheme

The report quotes an 18-year-old victim of the scheme, Suraj Kumar who revealed that people had to create an account by entering a six-digit password. Once that was done, they would find pictures of dozens of animals which they could buy.

After paying for the purchase, all they had to do was log in everyday and click on the animal. This would result in them getting paid a certain amount in the app's wallet.

"The most expensive was the peacock, which cost Rs 50,000. It would earn Rs 3,000 a day. Duck was the cheapest one which cost Rs 5,000 rupees, the app claimed to offer Rs 400 for it every day," said Kumar.

"One had to log in every day and click on the animal or bird that was bought. The earnings on the animals would come in the wallet of the account which was created in the app," he added.

Could this money be withdrawn?

Yes, but most times people would receive a server error.

The maximum limit for withdrawal from the application wallet was Rs 3000, however, people who purchased and bred these virtual animals said they would very often get error messages on attempting to withdraw money.

However, some people successfully withdrew small amounts of money. This only helped give people false hope.

As the word spread, more individuals became interested in investing and many people borrowed money or sold assets to enter the market.

But one day the app just stopped working.

Who owns ‘Smile Rancher’ and why haven’t app stores like Google Play Store or Apple App Store taken any action?

As per transaction details accessed by Decode, the money people would spend on these virtual animals would go to the account of Sewing SKY India Pvt Limited — an unlisted company which according to the Indian Ministry of Corporate Affairs website deals in fabrics and is registered in Telangana Hyderabad and belongs to Gangadhar Pathri and Ajay Kumar Pathri.

Application stores like Google Play Store or the Apple AppStore have been unable to take any action because the application is not available on these platforms. People downloaded the application via a specific link shared on WhatsApp.

Who sent them the message?

As per the villagers, a man called Bhishma Pratap spread these rumours. They say that Pratap claimed that his uncle was the one who won Rs 20,00,000 ($24,190).

For those interested in earning extra money, Pratap created a WhatsApp group named "Ranchers no. 1". As the admin of the group, he started adding more and more villagers, he then sent the forwarded application link to the group, which had more than 60 members. Pratap left the group the same day the application stopped working.

How did so many people fall for the scam?

The application called itself a "breeding management investment company from the United States."

It noted that was involved in "offline investment promotion for major breeding pastures and looking for investors who work part-time in the breeding industry".

It further claimed that after 2020, i.e., the pandemic, the company started doing its business online and started seeking people from all over the world to join the breeding industry and "make money together".

For residents of the small Bihar village of Maulanagar, this seemed like a good idea to earn some extra money. Most of the village residents belong to a socially marginalised community called the Musahars.

Has anyone filed a complaint?

Kasim Khan, a self-proclaimed victim of the scam, reportedly took action against the fraudulent company by filing a complaint with the Consumer Complaints Court on July 22nd 2022. In his complaint, Khan stated that he had invested Rs 55,000 in the scheme and attempted to withdraw the amount after two days, but was unsuccessful despite multiple attempts. He alleges that the company, Breeding Management, had now ceased operations and had deceived thousands of individuals through their online scam.

Was it just the one Bihar village that got duped?

Unfortunately no, the app has reportedly spread far from Bihar and has reached Assam.

The people of the small Bihar village got duped in February 2022, and in early July last year, a gym trainer in Guwahati Assam also received the link to that game. He and his colleagues invested in the app and lost thousands of rupees.

Kailash Kher loses cool at Khelo India University Games, shouts at organisers, 'learn some manners'

The most popular instant messaging service app, WhatsApp, has established itself as a dominant player across the world. Its continuous efforts to enhance its features have always overshadowed its competitors like Telegram and Line. The messaging app recently unveiled its plan to introduce the "edit" option, allowing its users to modify their messages. But when connecting to people, we often don't want to save a contact number each time there is a conversation. Till now it was a burden, but don't worry, you can overcome this hurdle by using some privacy settings in contacts.

Here are three ways through which you can text anybody without saving their contact:

1. WhatsApp’s Click-to-Chat Feature

This features works for both mobile and computers. You need to create and use click-to-chat links.

-Copy and paste the https://wa.me/<number> link into your browser or any other app where you can access it easily. Now, whenever you want to talk to someone without saving their numbers, just replace the number of the link with the full number of the recipient in the international format, that is country code + actual number.

Don't add any zeros or signs or even dashes.

-Once done, click on the link to open it.

Example: In India, the country code is +91 and 2134578790 is the number. You'll write:

https://wa.me/2134578790

-After this, you should see the "Continue to Chat," option. Tap on it to open the chat thread.

But if the number isn't a WhatsApp user, you will get a message that the number doesn't exist.

2. Third-Party Websites

While the method mentioned above is extremely simple, but some might not want to walk that extra mile. Here's another way you can go about it.

First, open SendWhatsappMsg.com in your browser on mobile or desktop. You should bookmark the link.

Here are three ways through which you can text anybody without saving their contact: 1. WhatsApp’s Click-to-Chat Feature This features works for both mobile and computers. You'll write: https://wa.me/2134578790 -After this, you should see the "Continue to Chat," option. Tap on it to open the chat thread. But if the number isn't a WhatsApp user, you will get a message that the number doesn't exist. 2. Third-Party Websites While the method mentioned above is extremely simple, but some might not want to walk that extra mile. Here's another way you can go about it. First, open SendWhatsappMsg.com in your browser on mobile or desktop. You should bookmark the link. Once it's open, select the country of the recipient from the drop-down box under the WhatsApp number. Then enter your phone number and add your message. Finally, click on the send message button. After this, the chat thread will open with the number you provided and you may now chat with the person. 3. Third-Party Apps You can install third-party apps on your phones that will allow you to text someone. Follow these easy steps: Install the Easy Message app on your Android or iOS phone. Copy-paste or type the number in the international format. Hit the "Start chat in WhatsApp" option to open the chat thread with the unsaved number. You can also try these click-to-chat apps: Direct Message for WhatsApp (iOS) Click to Chat (iOS) WhatsDirect (Android) Click to chat (Android)

What makes Byakuya, world's most expensive ice cream, cost over $6,000 per serving?

Pale Male, a red-tailed hawk and the celebrity bird of Manhattan city passed away after nesting above Fifth Avenue for three decades. He was believed to be 33 years old. Throughout his life, the hawk inspired several news articles, documentaries and even a PBS television special.

The sad news was announced by wildlife rehabilitator Bobby Horvath via Facebook. He discovered Pale Male ill and grounded, in Central Park. Despite his efforts to save him, including giving him a trip to the vet and meals, the famed bird couldn't survive, he said.

"We hoped for any improvement, but sadly it was not meant to be."

Many birdwatchers, tourists and New Yorkers were captivated by Pale Male since his first arrival in Central Park in 1991 as a juvenile.

When did Pale Male become famous?

Pale Male's celebrity status went beyond birdwatchers after he and his mate were ousted from the Fifth Avenue residence in 2004. He had been building a nest at the 12-floor luxury apartment. But the co-op board voted to move the nest, which led to widespread outrage among New Yorkers. The then Mayor Tyler Moore, a resident of the building, also protested the decision, which led to its reversal and addition of a metal "cradle" to support future nests.

After the upheaval, the hawk returned and rebuilt his nest and continued to live with his mate. They produced their offspring and by 2010, he sired some 23 chicks, and experts claimed all hawks in the city were related to him.

'Red-Tails in Love'

Wall Street Journal columnist and birder Marie Winn named him due to his unusually light plumage. Her book 'Red-Tails in Love' features the bird, which was one of the first red-tailed hawks to permanently settle in the Big Apple.

Horvat said, "Pale Male was the inspiration for thousands not only in New York City but worldwide to begin birding or photography."

His influence extended from locals to amateurs, professional photographers and even tourists who just wanted a glimpse of the hawk.

David Barrett, an operator of several birding Twitter accounts, said that Pale Male was a beloved city icon, predating other viral sensations like the pizza rat or the 'hot' Mandarin duck.

"He was not only the world's most famous red-tailed hawk, but he was probably the world's most famous bird, one that people knew by name," he added.

Was it really him?

Pale Male's lifespan raised some questions, given that he lived a decade past the average lifespan for his species. Some questioned that the true Pale Male might have passed away years ago, while one of his offspring took his place. However, Jessica Wilson, the executive director of New York City Audubon stated that Horvath, who had Male's remains, stands by his belief that the deceased hawk is the one he's been tracking for the past 20 years.

'Red-Tails in Love' Wall Street Journal columnist and birder Marie Winn named him due to his unusually light plumage. Her book 'Red-Tails in Love' features the bird, which was one of the first red-tailed hawks to permanently settle in the Big Apple. Horvat said, "Pale Male was the inspiration for thousands not only in New York City but worldwide to begin birding or photography." His influence extended from locals to amateurs, professional photographers and even tourists who just wanted a glimpse of the hawk. 'Seductress' roofies date, steals jewellery, diamond-studded Rolex watch worth thousands of dollars

Experts have raised concerns that next year's elections in the UK and the US may be plagued by a surge of AI-driven disinformation. They warn that the proliferation of Artificial Intelligence generated images, text, and deep fake videos, spread by swarms of AI-powered propaganda bots, could have a significant impact.

In recent days, concerns about AI have soared, particularly following breakthroughs in generative AI technology.

Why is AI a concern now?

As per the Guardian, while earlier waves of "propaganda bots" relied on simple pre-written messages or "paid trolls", tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney hold the ability to produce realistic text, images, and even voice on command. This has raised concerns about interactive election interference on a large scale.

A study by NewsGuard, an organisation that monitors misinformation, tested ChatGPT and Google's Bard chatbot and found that they were capable of generating false news narratives when prompted.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's warning about ChatGPT and other AI models

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and the creator of ChatGPT, warned that the latest generation of AI models has the potential to manipulate users.

Highlighting the need for regulation, public education, and transparency regarding the use of AI, he said, "The general ability of these models to manipulate and persuade, to provide one-on-one interactive disinformation is a significant area of concern."

"Regulation would be quite wise: people need to know if they’re talking to an AI, or if content that they’re looking at is generated or not. The ability to really model … to predict humans, I think is going to require a combination of companies doing the right thing, regulation and public education," he added.

This highlights the potential for AI tools to mass-produce variations of fake stories, which raises concerns about the deliberate dissemination of false information. On Friday, NewsGuard also announced that there has been a two-fold increase in AI-generated news and information websites, which have more than doubled to 125 in two weeks.
Our favourite Indian celebrities are making back-to-back stunning fashion appearances on the red carpet of the world's most prestigious film festival, the Cannes. The photos and videos from the event, which is going on in the picturesque city of the French Riviera, have taken the internet by storm. However, one video that gained maximum attention is that of model and actress Urvarshi Rautella. Any guesses why? Because of a French mediaperson who mistakenly called her Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

On Thursday, Urvashi made her second appearance at the festival as she attended the screening of the film Kaibutsu (Monster). The fashion icon was walking through the red carpet in a stunning orange-coloured voluminous gown when some French media person mistakenly called her Aishwarya.

Busy posing for the paparazzi, Urvashi in the video smiles and moves on. However, later, she reacted to the incident. Taking to her Instagram stories, she wrote, "Come on guys! So basically you want me to scowl at French media and paparazzi."

The video quickly became viral. Some netizens were quick to show their disappointment, while others just lashed out at the French media's mistake.

''Aishwarya popularity will always be unmatched, every Indian girl at global events been called Aishwarya. And that particular fandom has the audacity to compare her with their fav lol,'' one user wrote.

So basically you want me to scowl at French media and paparazzi." The video quickly became viral. "I wonder who called her Aishwarya, clearly these foreign photographers don't know what they are talking about."
