The retro British comedy 'The Duke' has charmed the Venice film festival, with critics Saturday heaping praise on its stars Helen Mirren and Jim Broadbent.

The caper, which has been hailed as a throwback to the glory days of Ealing Studios in the 1950s, has Broadbent as a self-educated working-class man from a gritty northern city pulling one over on the snooty British establishment.

''NAACP Empowerment Programs is delighted to administer a meaningful program in partnership with BeyGOOD’s Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund to assist our small business communities that have been directly impacted by recent events across the country.
Actor Tiffany Haddish, recently in a talk with Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of the US’s task force, revealed her journey with COVID-19.

The actress and comedian said she contracted the virus about three months ago, after working on a movie where someone else was tested positive for COVID-19.

The comedian during a video call said she has been tested 12 times for COVID-19 now, ''I wasn't in direct contact with them, but they sent all of us home and we stopped the movie,'' she remembered of the first time she went to get a test. ''Then they suggested that I go get tested. I went and got tested, and I got the results back like two days later. They said I didn’t have the coronavirus.''

While talking further she said, ''Then, somebody else I know that was around like a week before, they contracted the coronavirus, and so I went and got tested again. Mind you, these tests are expensive as all outdoors — it was like $550. Which made me upset because I was trying to buy some shoes. Anyways, I paid for the tests. Get the tests the second time. I’m not feeling any symptoms or anything, and it comes back like two days later, and they said I did have the coronavirus.''

She admitted that she was asymptomatic even though the test was positive. Tiffany quarantined as a precaution. ''That was like three months ago…and I’ve been tested 12 times now since because I’ve been working and everything. Then I get tested again, no virus, and then I had them test me for antibodies again, and then they said I don’t have any antibodies…so I think I'm superhuman.''

Fauci, one of the White House’s top experts during the pandemic praised Haddish that she did the right thing by getting tested often and quarantining in her house. ''The most important thing is that you have the societal responsibility not to be propagating the outbreak, '' Fauci said. ''To be part of the solution, not the problem.''

Tiffany also spoke about how the virus is affecting minority communities, that includes Black and Latino people.

''Not only do they have a greater chance of getting infected, because they usually – not always, it’s dangerous to generalize – but people know they usually have jobs that don’t allow them to talk to a computer. They’re out on the front lines, doing the manual labor jobs that require interaction with people,''

Fauci said, ''Then when you look at the African American and Latinx population. They have a much greater likelihood of having the underlying conditions that means that when you do get infected, you likely would have a serious outcome.''

Soon after learning that 'Black Panther' star Chadwick Boseman had died at age 43, fans urged Marvel Studios not to recast the role, setting up a dilemma for the studio planning a sequel to Hollywood`s first major superhero film with a predominantly Black cast.

Writers, academics and activists - speaking to Reuters about the film’s cultural impact and Boseman’s performance - believe Marvel and its parent company, Walt Disney Co, should honor Boseman’s legacy with a storyline that anoints a new Black Panther from the film’s existing cast or elsewhere in the Marvel Universe.

''They should really consider following the storyline of the comic book and advancing Letitia Wright (who plays Shuri, the tech genius sister of Boseman`s character) into that central role,'' said Jamil Smith, a senior writer at Rolling Stone.

''We’ve seen her in action. We’ve seen her in the middle of these fights. Why would we not think she’d have the courage and strength to become the next Black Panther?'' That strategy could help ease in fans who would have a hard time seeing a different male actor continue the role.

''Maybe the answer, for those of us who aren’t yet ready to see someone else in that suit, is to pass the reins a little earlier than they had expected and allow Shuri to take on the mantle maybe for a 'Black Panther 2'," said April Reign, #OscarsSoWhite creator and vice president of content strategy for Ensemble, a content studio.

Other approaches could celebrate Boseman’s legacy. ''Does (his character) come back as little Black Panther?” said Nicol Turner Lee, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. ''Does Disney honor the imagination of the young boys and girls who looked up to him?''

Disney and Marvel declined to comment. The studio has focused on paying tribute to Boseman, broadcasting the film commercial-free last Sunday on Disney-owned ABC, followed by an ABC News special about the actor. According to a report in the news agency, executives were caught by surprise and few people were aware of Boseman`s battle with cancer.
'Black Panther', based on the pioneering Marvel Comics character that first appeared in 1966, generated $1.35 billion in box-office sales, three Academy Awards and a best picture Oscar nomination, and acclaim for its titular star, who died on Aug. 28. Marvel was planning to begin production of 'Black Panther 2' in March, according to the Hollywood Reporter, for a scheduled May 6, 2022, release.

Although other studios have experienced the sudden deaths of franchise stars - and have recast, for other reasons, titular roles like Batman and Spider-Man - Marvel's decision holds more weight because 'Black Panther' was a much-celebrated Black superhero movie, starring an actor beloved by fans for the dignity he brought to the role.

The 2018 film broke new ground with its predominantly Black cast, helmed by a Black director. Boseman played the character of King T’Challa, who presides over the futuristic African nation of Wakanda.
Today 'Black Panther' is even more relevant, as Black Americans disproportionately suffer from COVID-19 and die at the hands of police, cultural experts say. The aspirational Wakanda provides an antidote to that suffering.

Reality shows, re-runs and revivals make up most of the television menu this fall as America's top four broadcasters grapple to fill holes in their schedules caused by coronavirus production shutdowns.

Most scripted dramas, including popular shows like 'This Is Us' and '9-1-1', will not be available until November or later, while the "Star Trek: Discovery" series that has been behind a paywall for three years will get a run on free-to-view CBS , the networks announced this week.

Elsewhere, it will mostly be a diet of old and new game shows, including 'Ellen's Game of Games', repeats of 'Celebrity Family Feud', and another revival of 1960s show 'Supermarket Sweep'.

"This is hardly a traditional fall season but we are prepared with a strong slate of original content while our regular scripted series begin production," Kelly Kahl, president of entertainment at CBS, said in a statement announcing the line-up.

The coronavirus pandemic shuttered production of television and films in Hollywood in mid-March and the industry has struggled to get back to work under new health guidelines. Scripted TV dramas and comedies are usually shot in August and begin airing in September.

Comcast Corp's NBC said hospital drama 'New Amsterdam' and police comedy 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' were among shows that will not be back until January, while a new season of family series "This Is Us" will not appear until Nov. 10.

CBS said it will showcase the Latinx family comedy 'One Day at a Time', which has been running on various other platforms since 2017, and has bought in crime series 'Manhunt: Deadly Games' from Spectrum TV.
Staples that will return with new content in September include Walt Disney Co's 'Dancing With The Stars' on ABC, which is being shot under COVID-19 guidelines, and 'The Masked Singer' on Fox Corp's Fox Television.

The hopes of Hollywood are riding on the opening of 'Tenet' on Wednesday as the Christopher Nolan spy thriller tests the appetite of movie fans to return to cinemas and rescue an industry hammered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The biggest release since schedules were torn up in March - and the only one of 2020`s potential summer blockbusters to make it to the screen in the holiday season - 'Tenet' launched in 70 countries on Wednesday ahead of the United States next week.

The movie has already won over some critics, but fans could be a harder sell given changes to the movie-going experience. The actor Tom Cruise, whose 'Top Gun: Maverick' was pulled from a release earlier this summer, donned a face mask to attend a preview showing of 'Tenet' in London.

"Great to be back in a movie theater everybody," he said on Tuesday. "I loved it." Film critic Kaleem Aftab said 'Tenet', which cost AT&T`s Warner Bros more than $200 million to make according to reports, was exactly the kind of film the industry needed.

"Tenet is an intelligent blockbuster made with loads of money, with big explosions and big bangs, exactly what we'd expect from Christopher Nolan, who made films like 'Interstellar', 'Inception' and 'Dunkirk'," he said.

Movie theaters are where the money is made, he added. "If 'Tenet' is a success we're going to see a quick rush of releases, we`ll see Bond come out for sure in November. The worry is if `Tenet` is a flop they`ll decide to wait until next summer," said Aftab.

While cinemas have tentatively re-opened around the world, they have mainly relied on classics to test COVID-secure measures, along with a few new releases such as Russell Crowe's thriller 'Unhinged'. Other films will go straight to streaming platforms, notably Disney's 'Mulan'.

Major UK cinema chain Cineworld, which owns Regal in the United States and Cinema City in Europe, said it was pleased by pre-release bookings for 'Tenet', which were tracking at a similar level to that of a blockbuster released pre-COVID.

"We hope that it helps to restore confidence in attending the cinema ahead of other high profile releases later this year, including the latest Bond, 'Wonder Women 1984', 'Black Widow' and 'A Quiet Place II'," a spokesman said.

Tessa Street, general manager of the Odeon Luxe in London`s Leicester Square, was confident the film starring John David Washington and Robert Pattinson would be a hit. "It`s vitally important that `Tenet` is successful and that we deliver a great experience for our guests so they want to come back," she said.

Capacity at the cinema, which has hosted numerous premiers, has been reduced by 40%, with adjacent seats automatically kept empty when film goers booked and masks required in the foyer but not the auditorium.

Film goer William Taylor was excited to be back. "Everyone is wearing masks, they are social distancing in the cinema and all the staff are wearing masks, so (I feel) pretty safe," he told Reuters, heading to his seat.
