Venice Film Festival 2020: 'Nomadland’ takes Golden Lion; here's complete winners list

For K-pop superstars BTS, 2020 is turning out to be a good year, with the group becoming the first Korean act to debut at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart -- if only they could celebrate with their fans. The group's first English-language song, 'Dynamite' logged nearly 34 million U.S. streams and 300,000 sales in its first week -- the biggest digital sales week for any artist in nearly three years.

"It feels like real, but still like a little unreal at the same time because we cannot meet our fans, we cannot go to some kind of award or performance," said RM, the South Korean rapper, songwriter and frontman of BTS.
"It`s like, we`re so grateful but ... we`re so sad at the same time," he said.

Since their 2013 debut, the South Korean boy band has surfed the global K-pop craze to dizzying heights. When asked why they succeeded over the countless other K-pop groups, the members are unsure.

"All I know is that we came together and did the best we could. That`s all it is, and before we knew it, we reached a height that we never had imagined," said Jimin.

But with much success comes pressure."It would be a lie to say it`s not a burden. But personally, I think an appropriate amount is good for us. We just see it as one of the burdens we must carry," said J-Hope.

The last goal for the seven-member group is to snag a Grammy nomination and win, though they question whether there is a place for them in the United States.

"Grammy solo performance or nomination is like one of our last dreams. So, we will keep doing our best and we hope we could touch the people`s hearts in the Recording Academy someday," RM said.

Walt Disney Co`s live-action war epic 'Mulan' opened to a lukewarm reception in China on Friday as it battled with mixed reviews, COVID-19 curbs on cinemas and a government ban on major media coverage amid international calls for a boycott.

The film, based on a Chinese folk story, had taken in 46 million yuan ($6.73 million) at the box office by 8 p.m. local time (1200 GMT), according to online ticketing platform Maoyan - a slow start compared with other blockbusters.

'Mulan' has provoked a backlash on overseas social media over its star`s support of Hong Kong police and for being partly filmed in the Xinjiang region, where China`s clamp-down on ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims has been criticised by some governments and rights groups.

Chinese authorities told major media outlets not to cover the film`s release in the wake of the uproar, four people familiar with matter told Reuters, further weighing on its chances of success.

Starring big-name Chinese-born actors - Jet Li, Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Liu Yifei - 'Mulan' was tailored to appeal to audiences in China, the world`s second-largest movie market.

But there was no major media build-up and no star-studded premier or red carpet launch.
Online reviewers in China seemed more concerned about the plot than the politics.

The film, which has already been released on Disney’s streaming service in many markets, was rated 4.7 out of 10 on China`s popular social media site Douban.

Some posters pointed out historical inaccuracies, including the use of buildings that only appeared hundreds of years after the film`s setting. The movie`s "pre-sales started too late, and it got quite some extreme reviews before the premiere," said Liu Zhenfei, an analyst with Maoyan.

"On top of the fact that it is impacted by piracy issues, because the storyline is Chinese, it faces higher expectations when shown in China," he said. The ticketing company predicted Mulan would likely take in less than 300 million yuan in ticket receipts during its entire run in China.

By comparison, 'The Eight Hundred'. a patriotic movie about China`s fight against Imperial Japanese during World War Two, earned 141.3 million yuan on its first full day in August. People coming out of the first screenings of 'Mulan' said the politics had not put them off.

"We should not make art political," said Shanghai cinema-goer Gao Wenxing, 23."As a Chinese person, I don`t think there is anything wrong with Liu Yifei`s action," she added, referring to the actress who plays the Mulan and angered many with her support for police in Hong Kong at a time when the city was embroiled in unrest.

When asked in the past about the reaction to the film`s Xinjiang shooting, China`s foreign ministry has reiterated Beijing`s denial of the existence of re-education camps in the region, calling facilities there vocational and educational institutions and accusing anti-China forces of smearing its Xinjiang policy.

Netflix responded to the backlash of their new movie 'Cuties'. The French drama elicited the outrage since its first poster release, for showing teen girls in highly sexualized way.

By responding to the backlash, Netflix spokesperson said, '' 'Cuties' is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children, It’s an award-winning film and a powerful story about the pressure young girls face on social media and from society more generally growing up — and we’d encourage anyone who cares about these important issues to watch the movie.''

Netflix also released a video titled 'Why', in which the film, writer-director Maimouna Doucoure explains why she made the film and said she considers it be “a deeply feminist film with an activist message” that is a “mirror of today’s society, a mirror sometimes difficult to look into”.

She got the idea after seeing a group of 11-year-old girls dancing in a way during a neighborhood gathering in Paris. Doucoure says, she spent the next year and a half meeting with hundreds of pre-teens to learn about how they felt about their femininity in today’s society, and how they felt about their self-image in the era of social media.

After its Sept. 9 release on Netflix, the movie received a backlash, that includes an online petition calling on Netflix customers to cancel their subscription and ban the streaming giant. The movie is about an eleven-year-old girl named Amy who starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.

Chinese authorities have told major media outlets not to cover Walt Disney Co`s release of 'Mulan', in an order issued after controversy erupted overseas over the film`s links with the Xinjiang region, four people familiar with matter told Reuters.

Set to open in local theatres on Friday, Disney had high hopes for Mulan in China, but starving it of publicity in the country`s strictly censored media would be another blow to the $200 million production.

Starring big-name Chinese-born actors - Jet Li, Gong Li, Donnie Yen and Liu Yifei - and based on a Chinese folk story, 'Mulan' was tailored to appeal to audiences in China, the world`s second-largest movie market.

But mixed reviews online and capacity limits in theatres due to coronavirus prevention measures were likely to weigh on its box office performance, even before major media outlets received a notice telling them to refrain from covering the movie.

Three sources told Reuters media outlets had received the notice, two of whom said it was sent by the Cyberspace Administration of China. A fourth source at a major Chinese newspaper said he received a text message with a similar order from a senior colleague.

No reason was given in the notice, but the sources said they believed it was because of the overseas backlash over the film`s links to Xinjiang. Disney's 'Mulan' sparks backlash over Xinjiang, Hong Kong

Neither the Cyberspace Administration or Disney immediately responded to requests for comment.
Partly shot in Xinjiang, Mulan`s credits included thanks to the authorities there, which prompted calls overseas for a boycott of the movie. China`s clampdown on ethnic Uighurs and other Muslims in Xinjiang has been criticised by some governments, including the United States, and human rights groups.

On Wednesday, the Global Times, a tabloid run by the ruling Communist Party's People's Daily, criticised the backlash against the movie in an editorial in its English edition, describing it as "another manifestation of the extreme ideologies regarding China among US public opinion."

Disney had worked to ensure Mulan tested well with Chinese audiences, and the company`s chief financial officer told investors on Wednesday that it was "very pleased" with the initial results of its release elsewhere.
Mulan is likely to be shown on more than 40% of China`s screens on Friday, according to data from Maoyan, a Tencent-backed ticketing platform. Chinese theatres are currently limiting capacity, typically at 50 percent.

The film had sold 9.78 million yuan ($1.43 million) worth of tickets as of Thursday afternoon, accounting for 55% of all ticket sales sold across China for Friday`s shows. One analyst, who declined to be named because he said the situation is sensitive, predicted the film would earn a dismal 150 million yuan at mainland box offices, given early audience reviews.
The film, which many have already seen online, has received a 4.7 score out of 10 on popular social media site Douban, where users leave reviews of films, books and music.

After months of delays, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic 'Tenet' finally arrived in the US theaters and generated $20.2 million over Labor Day weekend. Ticket sales, though difficult to dissect given the uncharted waters of the coronavirus era, are roughly in line with expectations for a new release during a pandemic.

The espionage thriller is already nearing the $150 million mark globally, thanks to a stronger showing at the international box office. Overseas, 'Tenet' earned another $78.3 million this weekend, bringing its worldwide haul to $146.2 million.

Warner Bros., in a note Sunday afternoon to press, said the studio was 'very pleased' with initial results, stressing that the rollout of 'Tenet' will be 'a marathon not a sprint' — meaning it doesn’t need splashy inaugural weekend grosses to justify its release.

“There is literally no context in which to compare the results of a film opening during a pandemic with any other circumstance,” the studio said. “We are in unprecedented territory, so any comparisons to the pre-COVID world would be inequitable and baseless.”

The domestic debut for Nolan’s latest includes ticket sales from preview screenings that started on Monday in the US and Canada. In pre-coronavirus times, “Tenet” would have seen much more substantial opening weekend figures. However, it’s launching in a vastly different environment since numerous theaters in the country are out of operation.

“With a significant number of key US states and cities still closed, this is a fair opening,” said David A. Gross, a box office analyst at FranchiseRe. “Business in the US is improving, but large numbers of moviegoers are not back yet. For now, this is as good as it gets.”

'Tenet' was able to play in about 2,800 cinemas across the country, a smaller footprint than normal for a wide release of this size. But Warner Bros., the studio behind the twisty thriller, is banking on it being enough to rationalize unspooling the mega-budgeted film after months of delays.

Currently, about 65-70% of multiplexes in the U.S. have reopened, though influential markets like New York City, Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco are still off limits. That likely shaved millions of dollars off of “Tenet’s” grosses.

Drive-in theaters have been a boon for cities where indoor cinemas can’t reopen yet. However, Warner Bros. issued guidelines that restricted the areas where “Tenet” can play outdoors.

They mandated that the film can only screen at drive-in theaters if indoor venues in that particular city are open. That means drive-ins in Los Angeles and San Francisco, both of which have been doing robust ticket sales during the pandemic, didn’t have access to one of the buzziest titles of the year.

“Tenet” is the first major blockbuster to debut in the US after the pandemic forced theaters to close in March. It was originally slated to bow in July but was delayed multiple times as cases of the virus continued to surge. While other anticipated titles — like “Fast and Furious” entry “F9” and Marvel’s “Black Widow” — pushed their openings into late 2020 or 2021, “Tenet” remained fluid with the hopes of welcoming audiences back after prolonged shutdowns.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein said the studio opted to forge ahead with the release of “Tenet” given its appeal to overseas audiences.

“As a strategy, we looked at this movie and said [ticket sales will be] two-thirds international and one-third domestic,” he said. “Clearly the rest of the world was in a better place in terms of figuring out how to move forward.”

Though “Tenet” started playing in theaters on Thursday, Warner Bros. opted not to report grosses until Sunday. Hollywood has been looking to 'Tenet' as an indicator of the viability of the movie theater business during a global health crisis. Many exhibitors reopened their cinemas in time to screen 'Tenet',and they are banking on pent-up demand to see a movie on the big screen for the first time in months.

Ticket buyers who ventured out to see 'Tenet' in theatres opted to see it in the best quality possible. Imax screens accounted for $11.1 million of global sales this weekend.

China, where 'Tenet' premiered on Friday, pulled in more than $8 million in ticket sales on opening day and $30 million over the weekend. When it comes to restarting business, the country is well ahead of the U.S. Already, China has seen notable success with war epic 'The Eight Hundred', which has grossed over $300 million to date.

“Though the box office trajectory in North America will look quite different for ‘Tenet’ than in the international marketplace, the film may actually see its fortunes rise in the coming weeks as more and more cities open their multiplex doors,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst with Comscore.

The hope, among studios and theater owners alike, is that extensive safety measures will make audiences feel more comfortable returning to indoor spaces in the coming weeks.

'Tenet', led by John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, cost $200 million to make — and many millions more to globally promote. That means the time-bending thriller needs to pull in robust ticket sales to turn a profit. Audiences gave the film a 'B' CinemaScore, lower than usual for Nolan’s filmography.

But without much competition from other Hollywood movies, Warner Bros. is optimistic that 'Tenet' will play in theaters for months to come.

When it comes to competition, 'Tenet' biggest rival may be coming from the small screen. 'Mulan', Disney’s reimagining of 1998 cartoon, is skipping U.S. theaters and launching this weekend on Disney Plus. The family movie is available to rent on the studio’s streaming service for $30.

In areas where Disney Plus is not available, 'Mulan' is opening on the big screen. The fantasy epic — directed by Niki Caro and starring Liu Yifei — drew $5.9 million from nine international markets, including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. 'Mulan' opens in China and Russia next weekend.

In weeks since theaters have started to resume business, a handful of new releases, such as 'The New Mutants,' Russell Crowe’s road-rage thriller 'Unhinged' and 'The Personal History of David Copperfield' starring Dev Patel, have debuted.

Disney and 20th Century’s 'The New Mutants' is aiming to generate $3.5 million through Labor Day, taking its North American bounty to $12.3 million. Searchlight’s 'David Copperfield' is expected to pull in $470,000 from 1,550 theaters over the four-day holiday weekend. That should push its domestic tally to $1.13 million through Monday.

'Unhinged', in its third weekend in theaters, made $655,000 on Saturday and looks to collect $1.67 million over the weekend. Through Monday, the movie is projecting $11.67 million total.

It’s unclear if the numbers for 'Tenet' will justify moving forward with other blockbusters until coronavirus gets under control in the US or a vaccine is developed.

For now, 'Wonder Woman 1984', also from Warner Bros., is the next film gearing up to hit the big screen. The comic book adventure is expected to touch down in the US on Oct. 2.

After months of delays, Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic 'Tenet' finally arrived in the US theaters and generated $20.2 million over Labor Day weekend. 2.
