This year`s Notting Hill Carnival will swap the streets of West London for computer screens around the world, as the event turns online-only due to the coronavirus pandemic, streaming hours of music and performance.

Held at the end of August each year, the carnival attracts more than a million visitors and is seen a symbol of interracial tolerance which dates back to the 1960s and celebrates the Afro-Caribbean community.

However this year there will be no booming sound systems crawling through crowded streets, bedecked with outrageously-costumed dancers. The physical parade was cancelled earlier this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Watch trailer: 'The Devil All The Time' features Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland in thriller

Instead, organisers have spent a month filming acts to be broadcast over the internet between Aug. 29 and 31, hoping to keep the spirit of the carnival alive and bring it to a wider audience. "First I was very sad that it wouldn`t be on the streets - I still am - but I`m very excited about the possibilities of this year taking Carnival into unique places," said the carnival`s executive director Matthew Phillip.

The carnival's roots trace back to post-war racial tension after Britain opened its doors to Caribbean citizens to help ease labour shortages and rebuild the country. In the same streets where riots once raged, the event celebrating Caribbean music, food, and culture emerged as a focal point for efforts to bring communities together.

The online 2020 event will be set against a backdrop of heightened focus on racial inequality in Britain, and as a virus that has disproportionately affected Black communities continues to circulate. Tens of thousand of protesters marched in London in June under the banner of the Black Lives Matter movement, condemning police brutality and racial inequality after the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

So, will the carnival mean something more this year? "Carnival is always relevant you know ... Carnival itself is almost a protest, it`s people claiming the streets," Phillip said.

Walt Disney World actors, who argued that the Florida theme park`s proposed coronavirus safeguards were inadequate to protect them, have resolved a dispute over COVID-19 testing, a union statement said on Wednesday.

The Actors` Equity Association had called on Walt Disney Co to provide regular coronavirus testing for its members, who cannot wear protective masks while performing as other park employees do.

Disney said on Wednesday it would provide space just outside Walt Disney World in Orlando for a testing site run by the Florida Division of Emergency Management. The site will be open to Disney employees, known as cast members, and the public.

"Our actions support all cast and our community at large," Disney said in a statement. Walt Disney World reopened on July 11 with several safety measures including limited attendance, social distancing in lines and on rides and mask requirements for guests and staff.

Actors` Equity, which represents roughly 750 stage performers at the park in shows such as the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular and Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage, said the measures did not go far enough and called for regular testing. Disney opened the park without the performers.

"We have been consistent that testing is an important part of ensuring a safe workplace for Equity performers, and today, I’m pleased to see that Disney World has agreed," Actors` Equity Association President Kate Shindle said.

The union said it had signed a memo of understanding with Disney and was waiting to hear how many workers the company would recall during its limited operations. In June, before the testing dispute, Disney had called back about 220 actors and singers, the union said.

Disney said it offered testing space "to help with community testing" and that "any suggestion that this has been done as a result of any one union is unfounded."

American actor Geena Davis recently revealed that like many of her female contemporaries, she had a hard time finding work after she turned 40.

According to the news agency, the Oscar-winning actor, now 64, who earned a second, honorary award for promoting gender parity in Hollywood, admitted while speaking to The news agency, "[Once I had] a four in front of my age, I fell off the cliff. I really did."

Davis remembered her days before 40, she wasn't too afraid of where her career was headed because Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange and Sally Field were still making ''great female-centric movies." Additionally, the great roles, really tippy-top roles that Davis was playing at the time assuaged any fears she had, making her feel that "things must be getting better for women."

"But suddenly, the great roles were incredibly scarce," she said. "It was a big difference." The actor then said she was a little surprised that her work, and the work of other female actors, hadn`t led to the big change she was hoping to see in the movie industry."

Everyone said: ''Now we`re going to have so many movies starring women. And I was like: Hot dog! I'm in something that started the change," she recalled. "And then 'A League of Their Own comes' out and everyone says: 'Now there's going to be so many women's sports movies!' And five years go by ... It was a shock that absolutely nothing happened," Davis said.

As the news agency reported, the 'Accidents Happen' star also discussed sexual harassment within Hollywood, recounting once being told by a director to sit on his lap during an audition, as well as watching other directors sexually harass others on set."You can`t say anything, because it will kill your career," she said of the culture in her earlier years in show business. However, #MeToo came around and shook things up: "People really can talk about it now. It's like night and day and it`s amazing," said Davis.

FBI agents in tactical gear on Wednesday raided the Los Angeles-area mansion home of YouTube star and social media influencer Jake Paul in an investigation stemming from a looting spree at an upscale shopping mall in Scottsdale, Arizona, officials said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation also searched two locations in Las Vegas, but no one was taken into custody during the raids and no arrest warrant has been issued for Paul, the agency said. Paul, 23, was not present when his home was searched, according to Laura Eimiller, an FBI spokeswoman in Los Angeles.
Paul`s lawyer, Richard Schonfeld, in a statement acknowledged that his client`s home was searched and promised cooperation with the investigation.

Paul, whose viral YouTube video postings of provocative pranks have won him millions of followers, had no comment on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. An FBI spokeswoman in Phoenix, Brooke Brennan, said agents were "investigating allegations of criminal acts surrounding the incident at Scottsdale Fashion Square in May." She declined further comment because the search warrant was under court seal.

Local news video footage from the raid showed officers removing several rifles from Paul`s mansion in Calabasas, about 30 miles northwest of Los Angeles. Scottsdale police said separately that misdemeanor charges filed in June accusing Paul of criminal trespass and unlawful assembly in connection with the Fashion Square "riots" were dismissed on Wednesday in conjunction with the federal probe.

Misdemeanour charges from that incident were likewise dropped against two men police described as Paul`s associates, one of them a Las Vegas nightclub promoter. Police said dismissal of those charges was tied to completing the federal investigation, adding that prosecutors could refile the case if warranted.

Civil disturbances in Scottsdale on May 30 grew out of demonstrations triggered by the George Floyd killing that week. Police said Paul took part in the unrest and was present after the protest was declared an unlawful assembly.
We all are familiar with the Netflix 'Ta dum' sound, which we have heard hundreds of times. But what if we tell you that the Netflix people almost included the sound of a goat bleating as their first choice.

Todd Yellin, the streamer's VP of product, revealed the strange story in the latest episode of 'Twenty Thousand Hertz' podcast from where the goat sound comes from and how it was not selected later, he shared, that he always wanted viewers to get the feeling of ''Wow, I'm going to get a treat, I'm about to get an amazing story, that’s relevant to me, that’s most importantly cinematic in my home''.

Yellin said in the age of click-and-play, the sound needed to be short. But he wanted something that would build up tension and release it.

After many unsuccessful attempts, Yellin tapped Oscar-winning sound editor Lon Bender, as like Yellin he also tried a bunch of sounds, from the sound of music boxes to the doors opening, using strange instruments, and one of the finalists was a version of the 'ta-dum' that resolved with a goat bleating.

''If we were going to do that call-and-response, that creating tension and then resolving it quickly, I liked the sound of the goat,” Yellin said. “It’s funny, I thought it was quirky. It was our version of (MGM’s) Leo the Lion. For a while, we were stuck on it.''

The goat sound was eventually scrapped, but the “ta-dum” remained.

Anyway, there were about 20 to 30 sounds in the box and then at the last, we had final three that include, the goat, a bubbly sound “from the depths of the ocean,” and Netflix sound that we hear today. As Yellin went with the third choice because of his 10-year-old daughter liked it, and that's how we are safe from listening to a goat screaming before every episode.

While the day to celebrate one's chosen friends should be 365 days of the year, Friendship Day every August is religiously held in special stead for scores of close pals. But this year, things are bound to be different.

So even though you can't high five your bestie, these six films can serve as the perfect binge party this Sunday. These wholesome and fun bonds of companionship are exactly what you need this weekend whether you're smiling at your friends miles away through pixelated video calls or have the privilege of camping under the blankets for a movie night.

Axone

One of Netflix's latest offerings, 'Axone' is a slice-of-life comedy that entertains and educates through its simple storytelling. Set in Delhi, the film follows an important day in the life of a group of friends all from the north-east states of India, who want to prepare a traditional pork dish for their friend's wedding. But the particularly nauseating aroma the dish emanates while being cooked results in a comedy of errors. Against the backdrop of a chaotic suburb in Delhi, the film unravels the inherent racism in metro cities.

The film stars Sayani Gupta, Dolly Ahluwalia, Tenzin Dalha, and Vinay Pathak as well as actors from the North east region like Asenla Jamir, Lin Laishram, and Lanuakum Ao and is directed by Nicholas Kharkongor. Produced by Yoodlee Films, 'Axone' is one for all those times your group got into inadvertent trouble and had a blast while doing it!

Faltu

'F.A.L.T.U' (short for Fakirchand and Lakirchand Trust University) was a film Indian comedy film directed by Remo D'Souza and produced by Pooja Entertainment. Starring Jackky Bhagnani, Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, Puja Gupta, Chandan Roy Sanyal, Angad Bedi and others, it is a telling tale of a group of friends who make an effort to re-write the education norms in the country, to fuel indigenous thinking and make 'people' out of students, not robots.

Given the recent change in the education system in India, this is quite an apt movie to watch now. This movie easily resonates with those considered traditionally a 'waste' in the academic circuit but have the means and the intelligence to make a difference and can hope to be given a chance to do so.

Chhichhore

A film that guarantees hearty laughs and bittersweet tears, 'Chhichhore' aptly depicts the immensely eventful hostel life in Indian colleges and the carefree fun it brings for scores of youngsters in the country. A 2019 release, the comedy-drama received critical acclaim for its direction, acting, social message and did considerably well as the box office as well. With an ensemble cast lead by Sushant Singh Rajput and Shraddha Kapoor, and directed by Nitesh Tiwari the touched hearts for its relatable storyline that exemplified the cut-throat competition of India's education system, the pressure it puts on young minds and how a supportive group of friends overcomes it all. There's little in this film that you and your gang won't connect with.

Dil Chahta Hai

This one is not just for the 90s-2000s kids who believed with all their hearts that goatees were cool. 'Dil Chahta Hai' is for all those groups that broke up and found each other again cause life is too hard to not patch up with your best mates. Set in urban Mumbai and in Sydney, the film follows college-graduate friends Aakash, Sameer and Siddharth, played by the charming trio of Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, grappling with major transitions in the adult and romantic lives. A coming-of-age film that marked the directorial debut of Farhan Akhtar, 'Dil Chahta Hai' won the National Award for Best Feature Film with crores of youngsters who agreed.

3 Idiots

Three might as well be the magic number here! There isn't a moment since 2009 when people across the country haven't criticized the Indian education system or spoken about engineering woes without citing '3 Idiots'. A comedy-drama that young India needed, and one of Rajkumar Hirani's most memorable tales, the film follows the unlikely bond between three students stumbling through life at the country's most prestigious and reputed engineering college. A satire about the social pressures of a rat race to be the best in a billion, the film starred Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi in the lead roles. '3 Idiots' gave us more than just hilarious moments and memorable characters like Virus. It gave us lessons that ring true even in 2020. So listen to Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh and tear up a little thinking of that favourite college bud who changed your life. It's warranted.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Another fresh out of college romantic saga is Imran Khan's popular acting debut film 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na', that pretty much set unattainable standards for love and relationship in every teenager's mind in 2007. Following the inseparable "Rats" and "Meow", a pair of best friends unknowingly in love with each other, and their larger group navigating the ups and downs of romance as young adults, the Abbas Tyrewala film was a recipe for success. Years later, the film has a cult following with iconic moments fondly remembered. Also starring Genelia Dsouza in the lead, 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaana Na' was the stuff of dreams with its soundtrack and plot twists, that managed to pull off a cliche climax.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Exotic foreign landscapes, thrilling to even watch adventure sports, and a dream road trip that never happens in real life - 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' is probably not the best watch in the current scenario. A ‘buddy‘ road film starring an ensemble cast of Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol and Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin, it follows three childhood friends reuniting for a trip before one of them ties the knot. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, who filmed across Spain, India, Egypt, and the United Kingdom, their seemingly perfect trip goes through various ups and downs as they fight personal battles and discover themselves and their relationship all over again. If the vibe around the film isn't enough to watch it over and over again, watch it for that soulful soundtrack and journal-worthy poetry. This one is an absolute must.

British filmmaker British filmmaker Alan Parker, director of movies ranging from 'Bugsy Malone', a gangster comedy featuring children armed with machineguns that fired cream, to the tense prison drama 'Midnight Express', died on Friday aged 76.

Parker, who also directed 'Fame', 'Mississippi Burning', 'Evita', 'The Commitments' and other successful movies, died after a lengthy illness, a spokeswoman said.

Known for his eclecticism, Parker was equally at ease in the worlds of musical comedy and of hard-hitting true crime drama. 'Bugsy Malone', Parker's highly original feature film debut in 1976, was a musical parody of Prohibition-era gangster movies, performed entirely by children. It featured a young Jodie Foster as the glamorous singer Tallulah, and other child actors who went on to have successful careers.

Parker followed up with 'Midnight Express', based on the true story of an American man imprisoned in Turkey for smuggling hashish. The film won two Oscars, including one for Oliver Stone, who wrote the script. Again moving in a different direction, Parker then made the gritty musical 'Fame', about the highs and lows of the lives of performing arts students in New York - a huge commercial success that spawned a spin-off TV series.

He also directed the film 'Pink Floyd - The Wall', which was inspired by the rock band`s hit album of the same name. Subsequent successes included 'Birdy', a drama about Vietnam War veterans, and 'Angel Heart', a sinister, atmospheric thriller set in New Orleans starring Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro.
The actor Matthew Modine tweeted to say 'Being cast in his epic film, Birdy, transformed my life. Alan was a great artist whose films will live forever'.

'Mississippi Burning' starred Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe as FBI agents investigating the disappearance of three civil rights activists in the 1960s. The film was based on true events, although it deviated from the facts in some important ways.

Although widely acclaimed at the time, garnering seven Oscar nominations and winning one, the movie was also criticised by some in the Black community. Critics objected to a lack of Black role models, and what they saw as a narrow focus on the white FBI agents.

Parker later returned to music, with commercial success, directing 'The Commitments', a comedy about a short-lived soul band in Dublin, and "Evita", based on an Andrew Lloyd Webber musical and starring Madonna in the title role.

Lloyd Webber said Parker was 'one of the few directors to truly understand musicals on screen'. Parker also made a film version of 'Angela's Ashes', based on the bestselling memoir of the same name by Frank McCourt. British filmmaker Edgar Wright, director of 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Baby Driver', was among many figures from the world of cinema who named Parker as an influence.

"His incredible run of hits as a British filmmaker gave immense inspiration to me," said Wright, adding that he had twice parodied Parker's 'beguiling' debut 'Bugsy Malone' and wanted one of the songs from that film played at his funeral.

Parker received honours in Britain for his achievements in filmmaking, including a knighthood in 2002. His films won a total of 19 British film academy awards (Baftas), 10 Golden Globes and 10 Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars, called him "an extraordinary talent":

"His work entertained us, connected us, and gave us such a strong sense of time and place." Parker is survived by his wife Lisa Moran-Parker, five children and seven grandchildren.
