IPL 2024 Auction: 333 players shortlisted, all eyes on Rachin Ravindra, Aussie stars

Star Australia batter Travis Head has turned down the chance to take up the opening slot once David Warner hangs his boots, saying it’s a specialist job and several contenders are vying for it. Speaking to the media ahead of the first Test against Pakistan in Perth, starting December 14, Head said he is happy batting in the middle order, with chances of him rotating are less in future.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald hinted that replacing Warner might not come down to a like-for-like replacement, with Cameron Green’s name coming up as a contender. Although no final name has come up yet, anyone of Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Renshaw will take up the vacant slot.

Mitchell Starc, Travis Head among top names registered for 2024 IPL auction, England's Archer opts out

Breaking the hearts of over 1.4 billion Indians, Australia romped to a six-wicket victory against India in front of a stunned 130,000 home fans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (Nov 19) evening. The win sealed a sixth World Cup trophy for the Australians who cemented their status as the most dominant team the sport has ever seen.

Travis Head (137) played the innings of his lifetime by smashing an eloquent century while his partner Marnus Labuschagne (58*) did well to soak the pressure and perform the sheet-anchor job to perfection. Their super partnership meant that India never got a sniff of a comeback as the team from Down Under won the match with 42 balls to spare with Glenn Maxwell hitting the winning runs.

Chasing a sub-par total of 241, Australia were off to a shaky start as India knocked back three wickets in the first powerplay. Opener David Warner, who was dropped in the first over as the ball went between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill in the slip cordon, could not capitalise and fell prey to Mohammed Shami.

Skipper Rohit Sharma brought Shami to share the opening ball duties, despite the latter having bowled as a first-change bowler in every match he had played. Despite the wicket, Shami had little control over the new ball as he bowled wayward lines, making the job difficult for wicketkeeper KL Rahul.

On the other end, Jasprit Bumrah struck in consecutive overs, sending Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith back to the pavilion. Smith was particularly unlucky as replays showed that the ball impact was outside the line when he was adjudged LBW.

With the game finely poised at 47/3, India took the pedal off the game, allowing Head and Labuschange to bat themselves into form. Head took the lead in punishing poor balls from the Indians but it was the lack of urgency from Rohit that surprised most.

While pacers provided the early breakthroughs, the spinners failed to have an impact. Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja could not extract any purchase from the surface and the Australian batters manoeuvred them around with utmost ease.

India were outsmarted and outplayed in all departments of the game as the new generation of Indian fans, relieved the memories of the 2003 World Cup humiliation that haunts every fan that grew up during the time.

India's poor first innings

The match was perhaps lost in the first innings when India squandered the early advantage and then played some poor cricket. Put into bat first by Australian captain Pat Cummins, India were off the blocks yet again with Rohit carting the bowlers for fun.

India's poor first innings The match was perhaps lost in the first innings when India squandered the early advantage and then played some poor cricket. Put into bat first by Australian captain Pat Cummins, India were off the blocks yet again with Rohit carting the bowlers for fun. Shubman Gill, however, perished while playing a nothing shot off Mitchell Starc. After Rohit's dismissal in the 11th over, India only managed to hit four boundaries, demonstrating the squeeze applied by the Australian bowlers. Although Virat Kohli smashed a fifth half-century on the trot, India never looked out of trouble and the innings struggled to have any momentum. KL Rahul contributed from the other end but fell against the reverse swing of Starc. 'It was a top decision': Virender Sehwag reflects on Aussies' decision to include Travis Head despite injury

Mohammed Shami has been a revelation for the Indian Team in this World Cup, perched at the top of wicket-taking chart now despite warming the benches in the first four matches. Shami took this tournament by storm, picking 23 wickets in six games, including two five-fors and a record-breaking seven-wicket haul in the semis against New Zealand. Speaking with WION in an exclusive chat, former Sri Lanka coach Dav Whatmore echoed exact sentiments.

“Shami has been a revelation,” WION’s in-house expert Whatmore said ahead of the World Cup 2023 final.

Whatmore said Shami was patient enough to wait for his turn, and upon getting a chance, he delivered on every occasion. Against the mighty Aussies in the final, Shami would again hold the keys.

Revealing what separates Shami from the rest, Dav said the wicket-taking lines he had bowled, regardless of the pitches on offer, had brought him success.

“He's leading the wicket chart, and Kohli is leading the run-making chart. He (Shami) had been patient, waiting for his turn to come. He will be very significant in the final against Australia because regardless of the pitches and conditions, the deliveries he comes up with are so effective. I am expecting another bag of wickets from Shami,” Whatmore added.

How can Australia beat India?

Although Dav thinks India will end up on the winning side, thanks to the momentum they are carrying entering into the final, there are still a couple of ways the Aussies can cause an unlikely upset.

“Yes, they can, but India has been a standout team,” Whatmore replied when asked if Australia could win.

“The two ways Australia can beat India is, firstly, if India beats them. Mentally, the occasion could be big for them, and they play differently than they did so far, but I doubt it. The other way is it would take a superhuman effort from someone, like Glenn Maxwell's innings against Afghanistan, that might single-handedly win it,” Whatmore opined.

Pinpointing on whom to be wary of, Dav feels Travis Head could pose a threat to the Indians despite his late inclusion into the side.

Be it the group stage or the World Cup final, Mohammed Shami cannot stop picking wickets in his first over. India’s ace seamer sent a batter packing with a Jaffa for the nth time in this tournament. Bowling to veteran David Warner with the new ball, Shami, coming in from around the wicket, bowled it away from Warner only for him to edge it to the slip cordon. Shami removing Warner on seven brought more than 100,000 Indian fans present inside the stadium on their feet.
Australia will have a shot at glory in the ODI World Cup final on Sunday (Nov 19) after they booked their place in the summit clash against India with a three-wicket win over South Africa. Architect-in-chief of the win, Travis Head was at his best at the Eden Gardens with both bat and ball as produced a 62-run knock coupled with a brace of wickets. Chosen the Player of the Match, he opened up on the challenge while batting as it was a difficult wicket to bat while spinners were in business.

Head reflects on challenge

“Didn't move from the seat for the last part. We knew how it was going to play, we had three or four days here. We haven't seen such spin, we knew we had to battle. I thought I wasn't going to be here (after the hand injury), but I am happy to contribute for Australia, nice to be here.
It was a close call between the traditional rivals as Australia won by three wickets while chasing 213 at the Eden Gardens.

They won with 16 balls to spare but needed a good helping hand from the tailenders to reach the final. David Warner (29) and Travis Head (62) made sure the five-time champions got off to a perfect start with a 60-run stand.

However, successive wickets jolted their momentum but Steven Smith (30) and Josh Inglis did enough to get the Aussies over the line. Marnus Labuschagne also scored an important 18 while South Africa bowlers were in little mood.

“He (Klaasen) smacked me, was under the pump, but it was nice to get his wicket. I was prepared to bowl a few overs, always keen to contribute with the ball. We have had that positive approach to keep the pace rolling,” Head added.

There were wickets for Kagiso Rabada, Aiden Markram, Gerald Coetzee, and Keshav Maharaj while their stand-out bowler was Tabraiz Shamsi with two.

ODI World Cup 2023: We haven't seen such spin - POTM Travis Head reflects after tense win over SA in Kolkata

Australia captain Pat Cummins expects no crowd support at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday but takes this opportunity to embrace this stage as the Aussies will face India in the summit clash of World Cup 2023.

Upon leading Australia to their record 8th CWC final – most by any team in the tournament history, Cummins acknowledged the stomach for the fight his team showed in the tight semi-final contest against South Africa.

Speaking to the media after a three-wicket win at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Cummins said his team had a great day, with fielding showing massive improvement. Cummins added sitting inside the dressing room was more nerve-wracking, given how close South Africa got to winning.

“I think it was easier out there than sitting in the dugout. Nerve-racking couple of hours, but it was good to get the result. We knew it was going to spin later on, but there was a bit of cloud cover so wasn't too disappointed about bowling first.

“We talk a lot about our fielding, probably wasn't up to standard at the start of the tournament, but we were fantastic today,” Cummins told media after the second semi-final.

Praising the opening duo of David Warner and Travis Head, alongside hailing Josh Inglis for his gritty knock in the middle, Cummins said he was nearly satisfied with the team’s overall performance heading into the final.

“Travis Head was the man today; to take that crucial wicket in the middle overs. Inglis played that beautifully, he looked in total control out there, especially against two quality spinners,” Pat added.

'Having played finals before will help Australia'

While a handful of players in this Australia squad have appeared in a 50-over World Cup final before, a few others have played in the T20 World Cup final. Considering the experience (of his players) of playing on the bigger stage, Cummins feels Australia will benefit despite more than 100,000 Indian fans cheering for the home team.

“Few of us have played in a final before, a couple of other guys in a T20 World Cup final, the stadium is going to be packed, mostly going to be one-sided but it's about embracing it. 2015 World Cup was one of the highlights of my career, never thought I'd be here playing another World Cup final in India,” Cummins noted.

ALSO READ: ODI World Cup 2023: Australia enter record 8th final after nail-biting win over SA; face India in summit clash Praising the opening duo of David Warner and Travis Head, alongside hailing Josh Inglis for his gritty knock in the middle, Cummins said he was nearly satisfied with the team’s overall performance heading into the final. “Travis Head was the man today; to take that crucial wicket in the middle overs. Inglis played that beautifully, he looked in total control out there, especially against two quality spinners,” Pat added. 'Having played finals before will help Australia' While a handful of players in this Australia squad have appeared in a 50-over World Cup final before, a few others have played in the T20 World Cup final.

New Zealand sent Australia out to bat first after winning the toss and paid the price for it instantly. With the Oz bringing in their x-factor Travis Head for this marquee World Cup clash, he turned this Australia Team into a hulk, slamming the star-studded Kiwi bowlers from the word go.
Both openers completed their fifties, with Travis registering his fastest ODI half-century upon his return from the hand injury. Warner and Head recorded the highest total in the first ten overs in this edition of the CWC, adding 118 for no loss.

Talking about his century during the innings break, Head said: "It's nice to be back with the boys. Nice to contribute. The hand recovery went well. It feels good (on scoring century). It's a very good wicket. Davey (Warner) and I have forged that partnership and tried to go as hard as we can. I think the back end of my innings it started to take spin and they (New Zealand) bowled well."

Head struck 10 fours and seven sixes in his innings before getting out for 109 runs off 67 balls. Head didn't spare any New Zealand bowler but was especially severe on Matt Henry. The Aussie opener hit Henry for 27 runs in 15 balls he faced including three sixes and two fours.

Head also took apart Trent Boult, hitting him for 19 runs in 10 balls with three fours and one six. Mitch Santner, arguably the best Kiwi bowler, was also taken to cleaners by the southpaw as the left-arm spinner got hit for 19 runs in 11 balls.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra bowled the most deliveries - 16 - to Head and went for 26 runs. Only Glenn Phillips could restrain the explosive batter, giving away just 11 runs in 12 balls and taking his wicket as well. Apart form these, Head scored rest of his seven runs off Lockie Ferguson's four balls he faced.

Thanks to the blitzkrieg by the openers, Australia were able to impose a huge total of 388 runs in 49.2 over before being bowled out.

Nice to contribute. The hand recovery went well. It feels good (on scoring century). It's a very good wicket. Davey (Warner) and I have forged that partnership and tried to go as hard as we can. I think the back end of my innings it started to take spin and they (New Zealand) bowled well." Head struck 10 fours and seven sixes in his innings before getting out for 109 runs off 67 balls. ODI World Cup 2023: Australia skipper Cummins confident of SHOCKED Smith batting at four as Head returns

Australia’s star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has confirmed his demotion to No. 3 in the batting order with Travis Head set for a return to the team for the ODI World Cup match against the Netherlands. The contest set to be played at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will be Head’s first involvement in the side since having sustained a hand injury during the South Africa tour in September. His exit is likely to see a mini shuffle in the middle-order as Australia gear up for a crucial run of games.

Marsh to play at No. 3

"I mentioned to David Warner, maybe he can bat three, but I got a firm no from him. But yeah, very happy to go back down to three. I've obviously batted there a lot over the last couple of years, so I feel really comfortable at three. And if and when Heady comes back in, I think that's the best position for me to play for this team,” Marsh said while in opening up on the batting shuffle.

The Australia star has been enjoying a wonderful last 24 months with the national side, having led them to T20 World Cup glory in 2021 and playing a crucial role in the Ashes. He has so far taken ODI World Cup by storm having scored 52 and 121 in his last two innings at the marquee tournament. Interestingly, he and David Warner put up a record 259-run stand for the opening wicket against Pakistan in their last ODI World Cup match.

Who will drop out?

With Head set to return, Australia are likely to drop Marnus Labuschagne and accommodate the left-hand batter. His inclusion will also force Marsh to play at No. 3 but will look at the contest as a blessing in disguise. Marsh has more than impressed in his new role having excelled batting at that spot in the India series in March.

Australia will once again rely on the services of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Adam Zampa in the bowling department. Zampa recently returned to form and has been amongst the wickets to help his side register back-to-back wins in the tournament.

Australia have so far won two matches and lost the same number with them still holding their destiny in their own hands to make the last four. They will have a key run of fixtures to come in the coming days as they take on New Zealand and defending champions England before facing giant killers Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

ODI World Cup 2023: Mitchell Marsh confirms demotion to No. 3 with Travis Head return on cards

Australia could be handed a major boost in their ODI World Cup campaign as they look to register their third win on a bounce when they take on the Netherlands. Travis Head, having missed the opening four matches of the ODI World Cup could return for the Wednesday (Oct 25) clash. Head having missed the India series in September was picked for the 15-member World Cup squad despite being unfit for the first phase of the tournament.

Head optimistic over return

"I had a really good hit yesterday. I think each session is getting better but again we've got to be mindful of the fact that I think it was five weeks [since the injury] a couple of days ago, and I sort of got told [around] that six-week mark,” Head said on Sunday in Delhi before the Netherlands clash.

"Everything keeps going well, but again, it's [about] how I woke up this morning. It's how I can potentially back up tomorrow and train.

"Still a few things I need to tick off but I'm optimistic. We'll see what happens. If it continues at this rate, who knows? Keep doing things day-by-day to hopefully give yourself the best chance,” Head added.

Australia’s good headache

Australia could have a good problem at their helm ahead of the upcoming clashes with Mithcell Marsh, Head’s designated replacement, scoring a hundred against Pakistan. He scored 121 runs in the 62-run win against Pakistan with David Warner also hitting a ton. The pair put up 259 runs for the opening partnership and helped them register 367/9 in their 50 overs. In case the Netherlands clash comes early for Head, he could return for the high-octane game against New Zealand.

Australia have so far won two matches and lost the same number from their opening four matches. They were beaten comprehensively by India and South Africa but have since beaten Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Pat Cummins’ men will then take on New Zealand and England in a tough run. The Dutch on the flip side have lost three and won one in their four matches. However, their solitary win came against South Africa in a giant-killing run.

ODI World Cup 2023: Travis Head set for return to Australian side ahead of Netherlands clash in Delhi

Australian chief selector has locked in Travis Head’s batting position as the batter is all set to return to the side for the Netherlands clash on Wednesday (Oct 25) in Delhi. Head, who fractured his hand during the away ODIs against South Africa earlier, will land in India this weekend to join the Australian World Cup squad.

Head decided against surgery that would have taken another 10 weeks to recover. Upon healing from the broken left hand, Head received the fitness clearance certificate from the doctors and will now fly to India for the remainder of the tournament.

Speaking with the media, Bailey acknowledged Travis’ return to the side, admitting Head would bat at his usual position at the top of the order, replacing Marsh.

The lanky all-rounder, who scored a hundred against Pakistan in Bengaluru on his birthday, would now be demoted to number three, while Steve Smith to play at four.

"Clearly, he (Travis Head) comes in at the top," Bailey said. "He's been fantastic there for us, and that's where he'll slot in. And then we'll just work out (the Playing XI) when it is, who we're playing, the surface and what you might need."

Bailey informed everyone about Head’s heading process, saying that given the nature of the injury, it would have taken around six to eight weeks. But Travis recovered before time, and upon ticking all the boxes, he will now return to the contention for selection.

"It can be a six to eight-week injury. He's ticked all the boxes in terms of the four-week scan, and the bone has healed, so that's all going well, and he's progressed really well through the week (since he started batting).

"But clearly the whole point of having him (in the WC squad) and carrying him to this point is not to then risk it by bringing him back early. So if it works out for that Dutch game, great. If it's a little bit further on, then that's okay," Bailey said.

Australia bash Pakistan

David Warner came off well with the bat in Bengaluru, smashing his first hundred of this World Cup. Marsh also hit his maiden CWC 2023 ton as Australia posted a mammoth 367 for nine.

Pakistan started well, with openers adding 134 for the first wicket, but none could stand tall as they fell shy of the target by 62 runs. Adam Zampa starred for them, picking four wickets, while Captain Cummins and Stoinis returned with two wickets each.

World Cup: Chief selector George Bailey lays plans for Travis Head as Aussie batter set for anticipated return

The pairing of Steve Smith at three and Marnus Labuschagne at four doesn’t seem to be working the way Australia would have wanted in this World Cup 2023. Although Smith is Australia’s best bet at three and numbers back Marnus’ spot at four, former legend Matthew Hayden feels for the Oz to find a rhythm and break loose, this pair must be separated for good. Hayden called for Cameron Green to open alongside Warner and Marsh to play at three and Smith at four against Pakistan.

With both Smith and Marnus playing the anchor roles, given their similar styles of play, Australia failed to pounce on the chances in the middle overs during the first two matches (against India and South Africa), which they lost.

Against Pakistan, another side with a potent bowling attack, Hayden wants Australia to make an unlikely change to their batting order and crack open the Pakistani attack on the batting-friendly Bengaluru pitch.

"I don't think it does," Hayden told ESPNcricinfo when asked if pairing Smith and Labuschagne together works.

"I don't think they'll change things either. To me, they have got a front anchor out and a back anchor out and the innings goes nowhere because they are both well and truly stable.”

"It's fine to have one stabiliser, I think it's really important to have a mind like Steve Smith at the top of the order when you start to set totals or chase totals, you need that computer mind, but when you have two of them in a row, I think it creates pressure through the top six, so I'd make a change there."

Green at the top, Marsh at 3 vs Pakistan – Hayden

Considering Travis Head will open once he returns to the XI, and Marsh will play at three then anyway, Hayden feels why not make such a change now and play Green at the top, giving him license to play freely and attack from the ball one.

"Give him a licence, Cam Green at the top," Hayden said.

"To me, he's a kid who hasn't necessarily found his tempo in any format of the game, but what we saw here during the IPL is that Mumbai Indians just sent him out and said, kid, just smash it.

"Mitch [Marsh] won't like to come down to three because he's had great success in his ODI career opening, but soon enough you are going to get [Travis] Head back in there, so ultimately Mitch is going to bat three, so make the change, create the initiative, do something different rather than sit and wait,” Hayden added.

Meanwhile, Australia must win this match against Pakistan to keep their hopes of qualifying for the semis alive.

Head had the cast removed last week and is facing throwdowns in the nets. Speaking to the media in Australia, Head said he is healing well but would still require a final clearance before joining the 14-man Australian CWC squad in India.

However, if everything goes according to the plan, Head would reach India in time for Australia’s clash against the Netherlands on October 25, although his selection would depend on his fitness and match practice.

"It's coming along well, and probably better than we hoped," Head told cricket.com.au.

"When we decided not to go with surgery, which would have meant a ten-week recovery, we were told it would be a minimum of six weeks with the splint before we could look at playing again."

Australia name final 15 for World Cup 2023, injured Travis Head included, Ashton Agar dropped

Australia opener Travis Head will require a month-long treatment on his fractured left hand, keeping him out of action for at least the first half of the Cricket World Cup 2023, starting October 5.

Coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Head will not undergo surgery as his chances of featuring in the showpiece event in India remain under the cloud. The selectors could draft in-form batter Marnus Labuschagne as his replacement if needed.

Having broken his joint on the left hand during the fourth South Africa ODI in Pretoria, Head will fly to Adelaide for further assessment while his teammates will reach India for the three-match ODIs and the World Cup 2023 to follow.

Revealing more on this following the Johannesburg One-Day, McDonald said the management would keep a tab on Head’s recovery status, but the main task would be to take a call on his CWC fate.

"The timeframe is still a bit loose at the moment, but the good news is he doesn't require surgery as it sits at the moment," McDonald said. "There will be an extended period of time out, and we've just got to weigh up whether that time (out) falls with an option to carry him through the front half of the World Cup.

"There's no doubt he won't be available for the front half, so that's a decision we'll have to make for the final 15(-player squad). But I can't give you an exact time frame," the head coach added.

‘Blessing in disguise'

While Head’s injury at this hour would hurt Aussie momentum and settled line-up heading into the World Cup, the strong bench strength at the helm will still keep them ahead of their contemporaries. Australia’s newest T20I captain, Mitchell Marsh, will now open alongside David Warner, while Marnus Labuschagne, who lost his place in the ODI side earlier, could fill in for Head in the XI.

Coming in as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green in the first ODI, Marnus played a match-winning 80 and scored a hundred in the next game to press his case for the World Cup slot. However, without getting into much detail, McDonald said though selectors are the ones to take a call on the final 15, Marnus appears to be the frontrunner to return to the side for the marquee event.

"I can't talk on behalf of the selection panel and lock him away in the World Cup 15, but it's no doubt looking likely," McDonald said of Labuschagne’s World Cup hopes. "He's made a significant shift in his intent at the crease and putting the bowlers under pressure (more) than he was potentially 12 months ago. He's struck at around 100 strike rates in this series."

Surgery not required but Travis Head out for first half of World Cup 2023: Andrew McDonald

Australia could suffer a blow ahead of the World Cup 2023 as their opener, Travis Head, is likely to miss out on the final 15 due to a fractured hand. The left-handed batter got injured during the fourth ODI against South Africa and will undergo further assessments in Australia, which will determine his CWC fate. As per a Cricket Australia release, Travis Head "will undertake further medical review on return to Australia before a return to play schedule is determined."

Attacking batter Matthew Short has been called up as the batting cover for the India series.
Short, who impressed everyone with his solid match-winning 30-ball 66 during the second T20I, is yet to make his ODI debut. In Head’s absence, either he or Mitchell Marsh will open alongside Warner in the three-match India ODIs, starting September 22 in Mohali, while Marnus could take up the number three slot.

Matthew Short replaces Travis Head for India series as Australia opener doubtful for World Cup 2023

Australia opener Travis Head suffered a fracture in his left had, putting his participation in the upcoming ODI World Cup under a cloud of doubt. Head was hit by a Gerald Coetzee delivery during the fourth ODI against South Africa in Centurion on Friday, September 15. The batsman was trying to attempt a pull shot on the shorter delivery when he was hit. He was attended by the medical staff and continued to play after the treatment only to leave the field after three deliveries.

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald confirmed the injury at the post-match presentation after Australia lost the game by 164 runs. "At this stage, it's a confirmed fracture and how long that timeframe is, we're yet to determine that so fingers crossed clearly with the World Cup fast approaching," McDonald said post-match.

"I'm not a medical person, but I think it's a little bit higher up than the actual [index] finger itself. But I don't know the actual terminology. It's in a joint somewhere so I won't go into the medical specifics. But, yeah, a confirmed fracture and to be assessed again tomorrow with another scan," he added.

Head joins a long list of Australian players with injury concerns ahead of the World Cup which starts on October 5 in India. Apart from the Southpaw, Pat Cummins (wrist), Steve Smith (wrist), Mitchell Starc (groin), and Glenn Maxwell (leg) are also hoping to be fit before the World Cup and participate in the ODI series against India.

The Kangaroos are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against World Cup hosts from September 22 ahead of the quadrennial tournament.

As for the match, it was a nightmare for Australia as South Africa put on a mammoth 416/5 on the board, thanks to Heinrich Klassen's mind-boggling 174 off 83 balls. Chasing the total, Australia were never in the hunt and eventually folded out for 252, leaving the five-ODI series equal at 2-2 with one more game to go.

Australia vs South Africa: Travis Head suffers hand fracture, World Cup participation under doubt

Australia’s stand-in skipper Mitchell Marsh has confirmed the batting plans for the ODI series against South Africa, with veteran stars David Warner and Travis Head set to spearhead the attack. The Aussies, on seventh heaven after their 3-0 whitewash of hosts South Africa in the T20I series, will look for a winning start as the ODI series gets underway. Marsh had earlier opened for Australia during the India series in March, sparking rumours of his return in that position.

Warner-Head to lead charge

"I expect to bat middle order," Marsh told AAP ahead of the first ODI.

"Things may change, but Davey is literally one of the GOATs of one-day cricket and white-ball cricket in general. We have Travis Head and Australia's best-ever all-three-format player there, so I dare say I probably won't be opening the batting."

Warner’s absence during the ODI series in India in March saw Marsh grab his opportunity as he scored 192 runs in three matches with an average of 96. He scored two fifties during the series before missing out on a third. Marsh’s superb run of form during the series saw his name in the hat for the opener’s slot, however, with Warner now fit and ready, the experienced all-rounder will return to the middle-order.

David Warner, Travis Head to lead opening charge during ODI series vs South Africa, confirms Mitchell Marsh

Australia’s newest T20I captain, Mitchell Marsh, can do nothing wrong. Marsh was Australia’s highest run-getter during the recently-concluded three-match T20Is against Proteas, hitting 186 runs with a similar strike rate. Usually bats at number three in the shortest format, Marsh will fight for an opener’s slot in the Australian ODI side for the upcoming Cricket World Cup, the stand-in coach Michael di Venuto feels.

Marsh’s return to the Australian setup lit up their cricket. During the third Ashes Test, in the absence of regular Cameron Green due to an injury, Marsh got roped into the side and that move paid dividends. Playing his first Ashes Test since last appearing at the Oval in 2019, Marsh slammed a hundred. In three matches played during the series, the attacking batter hit 250 runs at an average of 50.

Following the Ashes, Australia’s selection committee, chaired by George Bailey, appointed Marsh as the new permanent T20I captain, with a plan of handing him white-ball captaincy following the World Cup 2023.

Leading from the front, Marsh inspired Australia to beat hosts South Africa across three games played in Durban. In the first game, he won the Man of the Match for his incredible unbeaten 92 off 49 balls, including 13 fours and two sixes. In the following match, he again hogged the limelight with his match-winning 79 from just 39 balls, hitting six sixes and eight boundaries.

Alongside Matthew Short, Marsh helped Australia chase 168 inside 15 overs with eight wickets in hand. However, during the final match at the Kingsmead, he got out on 15.
His exploits in the shortest format have given Australia the selection headache as to where to make him play and utilise his form during the marquee event in India, beginning on October 5.

While Australia will play eight ODIs before their CWC opener against India on October 8 in Chennai, those matches will provide a clearer picture. Speaking on the same line, Australia’s stand-in coach Michael di Venuto said,

"There's lots of options for us moving forward opening the batting," Di Venuto told reporters. "You look at the World Cup – David Warner comes back into the mix, Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, they've all got good form recently, they can all put a case forward to open the batting at the World Cup."

Meanwhile, the five-match ODI series against South Africa will begin on September 7. After this, Australia will travel to India to play the three One-Dayers, starting September 22 in Mohali.

Stranded on 95 after stumps on day one, Smith required just two deliveries off his pads on day two to reach the milestone, and the Aussie batter was nothing but grateful about that.
India find them in hot waters after losing five wickets for 151 runs at the stumps on day two. With them being 318 runs behind and considering Rahane and Bharat are the last-recognised batters at the crease, India are less likely to fancy their chances of a turnaround rightaway unless a miracle happens.

Talking about that length on the off stump that troubled most batters in this Test, Smith said,

"The length at off stump I think is important. We've obviously seen a bit of variable bounce and some seam movement. So, if we're challenging the top of the stumps as much as possible, I think that's the quickest way home. You can certainly get the outside edge from there if it seams away and bounces or takes off, which a couple have. And then pads and stumps are in play with the ones that shoot low or seam back. So, it's about as simple as we need to keep it, I think,” Smith added.
