ODI World Cup 2023: Mitchell Marsh confirms demotion to No.3 with Travis Head return on cards
Australia’s star all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has confirmed his demotion to No. 3 in the batting order with Travis Head set for a return to the team for the ODI World Cup match against the Netherlands. The contest set to be played at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium will be Head’s first involvement in the side since having sustained a hand injury during the South Africa tour in September. His exit is likely to see a mini shuffle in the middle-order as Australia gear up for a crucial run of games.
Marsh to play at No. 3
"I mentioned to David Warner, maybe he can bat three, but I got a firm no from him. But yeah, very happy to go back down to three. I've obviously batted there a lot over the last couple of years, so I feel really comfortable at three. And if and when Heady comes back in, I think that's the best position for me to play for this team,” Marsh said while in opening up on the batting shuffle.
The Australia star has been enjoying a wonderful last 24 months with the national side, having led them to T20 World Cup glory in 2021 and playing a crucial role in the Ashes. He has so far taken ODI World Cup by storm having scored 52 and 121 in his last two innings at the marquee tournament. Interestingly, he and David Warner put up a record 259-run stand for the opening wicket against Pakistan in their last ODI World Cup match.

With Head set to return, Australia are likely to drop Marnus Labuschagne and accommodate the left-hand batter. His inclusion will also force Marsh to play at No. 3 but will look at the contest as a blessing in disguise. Marsh has more than impressed in his new role having excelled batting at that spot in the India series in March.
Australia will once again rely on the services of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Adam Zampa in the bowling department. Zampa recently returned to form and has been amongst the wickets to help his side register back-to-back wins in the tournament.
Australia have so far won two matches and lost the same number with them still holding their destiny in their own hands to make the last four. They will have a key run of fixtures to come in the coming days as they take on New Zealand and defending champions England before facing giant killers Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
