Day 2 of the Cannes film festival 2022: Tom Cruise becomes the show-stealer

Day 2 of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival could easily be dedicated to one of Hollywood's biggest stars Tom Cruise. The actor arrived in style for the premiere of his long-awaited film 'Top Gun: Maverick' and organisers ensured that it was a night to remember.&nbsp;

While the cast of the film gathered together for a photo-op at the premiere of the film, eight fighter jets zoomed above the event, expelling smoke in red and blue to match the colours of the French flag.

The actor and the film were any way the biggest draw at the year's Cannes film festival but it was made all the more special when he received 6 minute standing ovation post the screening of the film, which brought Cruise to tears.

That's not all! Earlier in the day, Cruise took part in a 'MasterClass Conversation' with French journalist Didier Allouch in the 1,000-seat Debussy Theatre, where the actor was given a tribute of sorts with 13-minute clip reel that showcased every entry on his filmography.&nbsp;

Cruise hugged Fremaux before taking the microphone to share remarks, inviting all the filmmakers in attendance to stand and be recognized and shouting out his close collaborators at Paramount. “They all worked so hard to bring this to the big screen, and it’s a dream to be here,” Cruise said. “I’m never going to forget this evening.”

The retrospective montage featured all the leading ladies with whom he has worked in his career barring one- his ex-wife Nicole Kidman. Cruise and Kidman were married for more than a decade and appeared in three films, but surprisingly, no shot of her was found in the comprehensive series of clips from Cruise`s long career.

'Days of Thunder', the film where Kidman and Cruise met was represented but no footage of the duo was on display. Instead, it was only shots of Cruise behind the wheel of a very fast car. Other Cruise co-stars were on display in montage, which ran both before the glamorous Cannes premiere of `Top Gun: Maverick` and at a Master Class with the actor that was held on Wednesday afternoon.

Guess who got removed from Tom Cruise's career montage at Cannes 2022?

True to character Pete 'Maverick' Mitchel, Hollywood star Tom Cruise arrived in style at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday in a navy helicopter for the world premiere of 'Top Gun: Maverick'.&nbsp;

The film, a sequel to 'Top Gun' propelled Cruise into superstardom 36 years ago. Three decades on, the magic of Cruise remains intact as was witnessed on the red carpet of 75th Cannes Film Festival as the crowd cheered loudly as Cruise along with the cast of the film descended on the red carpet.&nbsp;

As a phalanx of photographers kept shooting, Cruise, who returns as Captain Pete `Maverick` Mitchell, first did the photocall by himself and was then joined by co-star Jennifer Connelly, who plays Penelope `Penny` Benjamin, the naval aviator's new love interest, who is a single mother, bar owner, and daughter of a former admiral.

Thirty-six years is a long time, so the action-drama not only has a new director -- Joseph Kosinski, whose last big film was `Tron: Legacy` (2010), replaced Tony Scott -- and it has a new cast with the exception of Val Kilmer, a.k.a. Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, a fellow TOPGUN instructor and friend/former rival of Maverick, who is now a four-star admiral commanding the US Pacific Fleet.

TOPGUN, incidentally, is the informal name given to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor programme offered at the Naval Air Station Miramar (San Diego, California), which is now known as the Marine Corps Air Station.

A couple of months short of his 60th birthday, a smiling and chilled-out Cruise showed up in a smart tailored navy blue suit worn over a white shirt, and also sported the aviator glasses that had become the rage all over the world after he first flaunted them in the 1986 film.

Connelly, 51, in the words of `Daily Mail`, "looked stunning in a nude textured dress that was adorned in sequins and intricate beading. ... She layered the outfit over a white long-sleeved shirt featuring a frilly collar. [And] added a pop of colour to the ensemble with a pair of eye-catching red knee-high heeled boots."

Cannes 2022: Tom Cruise arrives in style for 'Top Gun: Maverick' premiere

The Cannes Film Festival is gearing up for a bumper 75th-anniversary edition with a selection of big Hollywood names, buzzy newcomers and previous Palme d`Or winners – a splashy return even as the conflict in Ukraine looms over festivities.

"I honestly think this is one of the best Cannes line-ups in years," said Scott Roxborough, European bureau chief for The Hollywood Reporter.

The festival runs from May 17-28, resuming its traditional calendar following two years of pandemic disruptions. It was cancelled in 2020, and last year moved to July when it was held under strict COVID protocols.

This year, the parties are back and Hollywood heavyweights will include Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun Maverick' – bringing the star to Cannes for the first time in three decades – as well as Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks.

"It's tradition to have our American friends – let's not forget that the Cannes Festival, in 1939 and in 1946, was practically co-built, co-invented by France and Hollywood," festival director Thierry Fremaux told a press conference.
Actor Forest Whitaker will be on hand to receive the festival`s Honorary Palme D`Or for lifetime achievement.

David Cronenberg will mark his return to horror films with "Crimes of the Future," featuring Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux.

Asia will have a strong showing, despite the absence of China, with films by Park Chan-wook and Hirokazu Kore-eda in competition and 'Squid Game' actor Lee Jung-jae premiering his new film 'Hunt.'

"Everyone wants to sort of come back for this moment, sort of this re-awakening of cinema here in Cannes," said Roxborough.

The festival opens on Tuesday with a zombie film, 'Final cut,' by French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius, who changed the title from 'Z, like Z' to strip out a reference to the letter which has become associated with the war in Ukraine.

The festival banned official Russian delegations from the event but will feature 'Tchaikovski`s Wife' by exiled Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, who has been outspoken about the war.

Also screening is 'Mariupolis 2' by Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, 45, who was killed in Mariupol, the Ukrainian city heavily bombarded by Russian forces, nearly a month ago while working on the film. His fiancée Hanna Bilobrova, who finished the project, will present it.

Another Ukrainian entry is a debut film from Maksim Nakonechnyi, 'Butterfly Vision,' the story of a young Ukrainian woman who returns to her country after being captured then released in a prisoner swap.

"We will be thinking a lot about film, but we will never stop thinking about what is happening in Ukraine as well," said Fremaux who was peppered with questions about the festival`s position on the war.

Queen Elizabeth II makes her first appearance during a Platinum Jubilee celebration

It took Tom Cruise 36 years to head back to the danger zone, and movie critics said Thursday it was worth the wait to see "Top Gun" back on the big screen.

The sequel to the 1986 blockbuster, called 'Top Gun: Maverick,'&nbsp;earned a 96% positive rating from 76 reviews collected on the Rotten Tomatoes website.

The film is set to debut in cinemas on May 27. In the movie, the 59-year-old Cruise reprises his role as Pete Mitchell, the cocky Navy pilot who has never risen through the ranks because of his penchant for bucking authority. Mitchell, whose code name is Maverick, is asked to train a group of young fighter pilots for a specialized mission.

Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press called the new film "a textbook example of how to make a sequel."

"The movie satisfies with one foot in the past by hitting all the touchstones of the first film," Kennedy said, "and yet stands on its own."
Box office analysts project the movie will rank as one of the biggest box office hits of the summer. It had been scheduled for release in June 2020, but distributor Paramount Pictures delayed the release multiple times during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOffice Pro, estimated that ticket sales would hit $100 million over the Memorial Day weekend in the United States and Canada. That would make it the highest-grossing debut of Cruise`s career.

The actor is promoting the movie at events around the world. At a premiere in San Diego, he made a grand entrance by piloting a helicopter onto an aircraft carrier. Next week, he will attend a screening at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Critics said the movie offers thrilling flight scenes, an emotional story and strong performances by the supporting cast, including Miles Teller, who plays the son of Goose, Maverick`s partner who died in the original film.

But most of the praise was showered on Cruise. "It`s a fresh-faced gloss on the original ... powered, like the original, by a star who`ll simply never stop being a star," wrote K. Austin Collins of Rolling Stone.

Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly said the movie "belongs in almost every scene to Cruise."

"At this point in his career, he`s not really playing characters so much as variations on a theme — the theme being, perhaps, The Last Movie Star," she said. "And in the air up there, he stands alone."

Tom Cruise 'Mission Impossible 7' official title revealed, along with an exciting trailer

Tom Cruise unveiled the world-first screening of 'Top Gun: Maverick'&nbsp;at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday -- introducing the long-awaited sequel while balanced atop a flying bi-plane.

The new 'Top Gun,'&nbsp;which picks up the story of Maverick and his fighter pilot buddies some three decades after the blockbuster original, was scheduled to open in 2020 but was repeatedly delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cruise, famous for doing many of his own stunts, introduced the screening to the movie theater industry convention with a video message recorded in typically hair-raising style, perched on the moving plane's fuselage from the skies above South Africa.

"Hey everyone. Wish I could be there with you. I'm sorry for the extra noise," yelled 59-year-old Cruise over a roaring plane engine and high winds. "As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible."

"Tom does everything at full speed all the time... and you can't stop him. He's going to do it no matter what," joked producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who also returns from the first movie, at the CinemaCon event.

While plot details and reviews are embargoed before the film officially premieres at the Cannes festival next month, "Top Gun: Maverick" drew immediate glowing praise on social media from journalists attending Paramount's CinemaCon presentation.

It combines adrenalin-packed action sequences largely shot on real US Navy fighter jets with emotional references to the original.

Bruckheimer said it had taken so long before making the follow-up because "all our careers kind of took off from that point" and Cruise "had a lot of stories he wanted to tell."

Tony Scott, who directed the original, died in 2012, but new director Joseph Kosinski "came up with a way to make it that excited Tom."

Kosinski said he had been inspired by stunning footage on YouTube recorded by US Navy pilots filming with GoPro cameras during their training.

"I showed that to Tom and I said 'this is available on the internet for free -- if we can't beat this, there's no point in making this film.' So he agreed."

With the assistance of Navy engineers, the filmmakers found ways to insert six cameras into the jet cockpits.

The blockbuster original was based on a real training program that was known as Topgun and based at San Diego's former Naval Air Station Miramar.

Navy recruiting officials reportedly saw a dramatic uptick in inquiries from would-be flyboys following the film's release, with military recruiters in some cities setting up tables outside cinemas.

Filmmakers "did not get a lot of support from the Navy" to make the original "Top Gun," said Kosinski.

"This movie on the other hand, when we approached the Navy to make it, it was like throwing open the doors. You know, 'come on in, tell us what you need.'"

The latest movie was granted access to the secretive Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake in the Mojave desert of California, said Kosinski.

It also features an appearance from Val Kilmer, whose career was effectively ended when he lost his voice during treatment for throat cancer.

"Val felt comfortable doing it. It was very emotional filming it," recalled Bruckheimer.

"Obviously, he's compromised, but he's still an amazing actor, an amazing individual.

"Tom actually said 'I'm not making this movie unless Val is in it.'"

Tom Cruise unveiled the world-first screening of 'Top Gun: Maverick' at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday -- introducing the long-awaited sequel while balanced atop a flying bi-plane. The new 'Top Gun,' which picks up the story of Maverick and his fighter pilot buddies some three decades after the blockbuster original, was scheduled to open in 2020 but was repeatedly delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Cruise, famous for doing many of his own stunts, introduced the screening to the movie theater industry convention with a video message recorded in typically hair-raising style, perched on the moving plane's fuselage from the skies above South Africa. "Hey everyone. Wish I could be there with you. I'm sorry for the extra noise," yelled 59-year-old Cruise over a roaring plane engine and high winds. "As you can see, we are filming the latest installment of Mission: Impossible." "Tom does everything at full speed all the time... and you can't stop him. He's going to do it no matter what," joked producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who also returns from the first movie, at the CinemaCon event. While plot details and reviews are embargoed before the film officially premieres at the Cannes festival next month, "Top Gun: Maverick" drew immediate glowing praise on social media from journalists attending Paramount's CinemaCon presentation. It combines adrenalin-packed action sequences largely shot on real US Navy fighter jets with emotional references to the original. Tom Cruise has a bad temper and this isn’t something new but his ex-manager has now come out with explicit details.&nbsp;

Tom’s former manager Eileen Berlin detailed the actor’s anger issues in an interview with The Daily Mail. She said, “Tommy had a terrible temper. He harbored a lot of anger at his natural father. He was moody and would get angry in a snap of your fingers.” She was his manager until the Top Gun franchise happened to him.&nbsp;

She further said, “‘It was like something was smoldering, and it would boil up and explode. I put it down to his insecurity. I presented him with an album with all his publicity articles from teen magazines for his 19th birthday’. He screamed, ‘I don’t want to be in the teen mags’. He had told me he considered himself an adult, not a teen idol. He threw the album hard at me, and it hit me on the cheek’.”

While promoting her new movie, 'Being the Ricardos', in an interview, the 54-year-old actress talked about her character Lucille Ball in the biopic, and was talking about the actress' failed relationship with Desi Arnaz
&nbsp;
''It's about a creative and romantic relationship that doesn't work out. But from it comes some extraordinary things. And I love that. I love that it's not a happy ending,'' she explained.&nbsp;

''This film says you can make an extraordinary relationship thrive and leave remnants of it that exist forever. Yeah, that's really gorgeous. You can't make people behave how you want them to, and sometimes you're going to fall in love with someone who isn't going to be the person you spend the rest of your life with. And I think that's all very relatable.''

The journalist, a woman, then asked Kidman 'with exquisite care' if she was referring to her marriage to the Cruise, disappointed Nicole was upset that her ex was brought up.

''Oh, my God, no, no. Absolutely not. No. I mean, that's, honestly, so long ago that that isn't in this equation. So no,'' she responded.&nbsp;

''And I would ask not to be pigeonholed that way, either. It feels to me almost sexist, because I'm not sure anyone would say that to a man. And at some point, you go, "Give me my life. In its own right."'&nbsp;

Nicole Kidman slams 'sexist' question about ex Tom Cruise

People can't get enough of one particularly 'hot'&nbsp;secret service agent of US President Joe Biden, who is making an impact on Social media.

The handsome agent was called one of "Biden's Baddies," drawing similarities to actor Tom Cruise in "Top Gun," and it's easy to understand why.

The US president was seen shopping in Nantucket on Friday, accompanied by several of his grandchildren, and his appearance drew swarms of fans.&nbsp;

However, not everyone was there to support the leader, as one of US President Joe Biden's Secret Service officers became viral on TikTok - where fans declare their love for him - after being seen standing guard during the presidential outing.&nbsp;

It's a wrap of Tom Cruise'&nbsp;<a href="http://13.235.153.162/entertainment/tom-cruise-to-miss-his-date-at-the-theatres-in-2021-top-gun-and-mi7-pushed-to-2022-due-to-rise-in-covid-19-cases-410111">'Mission Impossible</a>&nbsp;7'.&nbsp;

The filming comes to an end after more than a year of shooting,&nbsp;and multiple delays and shutdowns amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Making the announcement, director Christopher McQuarrie took to Instagram to express his gratitude&nbsp;to the cast and crew, who have gone through <a href="http://13.235.153.162/entertainment/tom-cruise-continues-to-be-a-nightmare-for-mission-impossible-7-crew-reports-360398">enormous tough conditions</a> for the movie.&nbsp;

Sharing a picture of himself with lead actor and co-producer Tom Cruise, Christopher wrote, “All you need is good people. To our indomitable, unstoppable, unrelenting cast and crew: Even under the best of circumstances, it should have been impossible. Even having seen it, we can’t believe what you’ve achieved. Words can never adequately express our gratitude and admiration – not only to you, but to your loved ones. You are the best in the world.”

Pandemic was the biggest hurdle for the production of the movie, which spanned across Italy, Norway, and England. There were several scenes that had to be&nbsp;shot through relocations,&nbsp;across different cities and even&nbsp;the country was changed due to host protocols and restrictions during the production phase.

Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun' sequel rare script copy stolen from actor's cars: Report

For Tom Cruise fans, the wait to see him on the big screen has just become longer. The superstar's big-ticket films 'Top Gun: Maverick' and 'Mission: Impossible 7' will not be hitting theatres anytime soon.&nbsp;

Reports suggest that Paramount Pictures has postponed the release of the two films until 2022. Now, 'Top Gun: Maverick' will release in May 2022 and 'Mission: Impossible 7' will hit theatres in September 2022.&nbsp;

The decision has been taken in view of the rise in COVID-19 infection across the US.&nbsp;

The 'Top Gun' sequel, which has been delayed multiple times during the pandemic, had been set to debut in theaters on November 19, just ahead of Thanksgiving, to kick off the holiday moviegoing season.

'Top Gun' will now debut on May 27, the date that "M:I 7" had been set to light up screens over next year`s Memorial Day weekend. That forced a shift for "M:I 7," which was moved to Sept. 30, 2022.

While cinema halls opened up earlier this year across US and UK, studios have still be cautious of announcing the release date of films amid the pandemic. The new Delta variant of the coronavirus has disrupted a hope for viewers to come back to theatres.&nbsp;

Theater chains, including AMC Entertainment, Cineworld Plc and Cinemark Holdings, are counting on blockbusters such as 'Top Gun' to help lure audiences back. The movie is a follow-up to the 1986 hit starring Cruise as an elite US Navy fighter pilot.

While Paramount has decided to move the release of their big budget films to next year, others are sticking to their 2021 release date. James Bond movie 'No Time To Die' is scheduled to release in cinemas later this month and studio MGM has insisted that the date woll stick.&nbsp;

Other upcoming films include Sony`s 'Venom: Let There Be Carnage' in October, Marvel`s 'Eternals' in November and 'Spider-Man: No Way Home' in December.

Tom Cruise to miss his date at the theatres in 2021, 'Top Gun' and MI7 pushed to 2022

Production on the new 'Mission: Impossible'&nbsp;movie was shut down seven times due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday that accuses the film`s insurance company of failing to pay out for all but one of the costly stoppages.

Filming on the action series starring Tom Cruise was delayed four times in Italy, and three times in the United Kingdom between February 2020 and June 2021, said the lawsuit filed by Paramount Pictures in U.S. federal court in California.

The stoppages were caused by positive coronavirus tests among members of the cast or crew, or quarantine or lockdowns imposed in countries where the thriller was being filmed.

The lawsuit accuses Indiana-based Federal Insurance Company of breach of contract, saying it has agreed only to pay out $5 million for the first stoppage.

Federal Insurance did not immediately return a request for comment.

Cruise, who is also a producer on the film, lost his temper on the set of 'Mission: Impossible 7'&nbsp;in England in December over a breach in COVID protocols, threatening to fire cast and crew members who did not take them seriously.

'Mission: Impossible'&nbsp;is one of the biggest franchises in Hollywood, with 2018`s 'Mission: Impossible-Fallout'&nbsp;taking more than $791 million at the worldwide box office.

Multiple film and television productions have been disrupted by the pandemic and the cost of testing, consultants and protective equipment has added millions of dollars to their budgets.

Paramount said in the lawsuit that the insurance company argued there was "no evidence that those cast and crew members could not continue their duties, despite being infected with SARS-CoV-2 and posing an undeniable risk to other individuals involved with the production."

Paramount did not say how much the shutdowns had cost but said its losses "far exceeded" the $5 million that Federal had agreed to pay for the first instance of coronavirus in February 2020.

Paramount is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

'Mission: Impossible' sues insurance company over 7 COVID-19 shutdowns

Tom Cruise sealed his reputation for performing his own dangerous stunts as "Mission Impossible" footage of him riding a motorbike off a treacherous cliff stunned movie theater bosses at their annual convention Thursday.

Paramount used its slot on the final day of CinemaCon trade show in Las Vegas to present clips from its upcoming features "Mission: Impossible 7" and "Top Gun: Maverick," with the two films' star Cruise appearing remotely via video.

"This is far and away the most dangerous thing we've ever attempted," said Cruise, introducing the stunt.

"We've been working on this for years. We're going to shoot it in Norway and it will be a motorcycle jump off a cliff into a base jump."
