The film`s positive word of mouth should be helpful in reaching younger audiences, who were not alive when 'Top Gun' opened 36 years ago. 
 
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, called the film`s three-day figure "outstanding." 
 
"The source material remains strong, the execution is excellent, and Tom Cruise makes it work impeccably well," he says. 
 
'Top Gun: Maverick' continues a stellar box office streak for Paramount, marking the studio`s fifth movie this year to open in first place. Without the assistance of comic books or raging dinosaurs, the studio's 2022 slate -- also consisting of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' ($182 million in North America), 'The Lost City' ($100 million in North America), 'Scream' ($81 million in North America) and 'Jackass Forever' ($57 million in North America) -- has resonated in theaters in a big way. Initially reluctant to take up the job, Maverick does take on the job on the behest of his old colleague and friend Ice (Val Kilmer in a special cameo) who is now an admiral in the US Navy.&nbsp;

Of course, some of the moments in the film are almost a replica of the original- of the shirtless pilots playing beach volleyball, of the bromance and rivalry between the pilots-&nbsp;typical of a good old Hollywood actioner, but somehow it works. The scenes between Cruise and Teller are well performed and well written- you can sense the uneasiness between the two characters right from the beginning. The scene featuring Cruise and Kilmer is special and slightly emotional and rides high nostalgia.&nbsp;

While 'Top Gun: Maverick' tries to tell a different story from the original and has an impressive new cast on board, it ultimately showcases Cruise in all his glory. At 60 he is fitter than some of his peers and doesn't shy away from going shirtless on screen. He does shy away from filming a full fledged love scene with his on-screen romantic interest Penny (Jennifer Connelly). Instead, they are shown to romance the old fashioned way, with more exhange of words and suggestive moves.&nbsp; 
 
Cruise's presence looms large and he doesn't disappoint his fans. He delivers a summer blockbuster, playing the Alpha-male to the hilt who can die for his country, romance the honourable way, play a father figure to his students and fight his inner demons while being commissioned on one of the toughest missions of his career.&nbsp; 
 
Other actors like John Hamm as Vice Admiral, Jennifer Connelly as the spirited Penny, and Miles Teller as the angsty Rooster are equally good in their roles- complementing Cruise in every scene and playing their part well.&nbsp; 
 
'Top Gun: Maverick' is predictable by the end, but it still manages to hold your attention with the glorious camera work by Claudio Miranda. The airshow with fighter jets racing against time and the enemy is well captured on screen and is best viewed on the big screen.

He is a better producer than I am and surrounds himself with great people,” said the producer praising his leading man. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has Cruise reprising his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchel who is summoned by the US Navy to train a new batch of fighter pilots who have to go on a mission in eight weeks. Considering it's the sequel of sorts to the 1986 classic, was it a risk that Bruckheimer took? “Of course,” said Bruckheimer. “We had to make sure that it’s as good as you can make a film. Tom always said 'You gotta hit a bullet with a bullet'. So we all worked very hard. We had terrific writers, Joe Kosinski is a fabulous director to have directed the movie.” “When you have excellent people around you, you can make a make a really good movie,” the producer said with a smile. The Cannes Film Festival is gearing up for a bumper 75th-anniversary edition with a selection of big Hollywood names, buzzy newcomers and previous Palme d`Or winners – a splashy return even as the conflict in Ukraine looms over festivities. 
 
"I honestly think this is one of the best Cannes line-ups in years," said Scott Roxborough, European bureau chief for The Hollywood Reporter. 
 
The festival runs from May 17-28, resuming its traditional calendar following two years of pandemic disruptions. It was cancelled in 2020, and last year moved to July when it was held under strict COVID protocols. 
 
This year, the parties are back and Hollywood heavyweights will include Tom Cruise's 'Top Gun Maverick' – bringing the star to Cannes for the first time in three decades – as well as Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic, starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks. 
 
"It's tradition to have our American friends – let's not forget that the Cannes Festival, in 1939 and in 1946, was practically co-built, co-invented by France and Hollywood," festival director Thierry Fremaux told a press conference. 
Actor Forest Whitaker will be on hand to receive the festival`s Honorary Palme D`Or for lifetime achievement. 
 
David Cronenberg will mark his return to horror films with "Crimes of the Future," featuring Viggo Mortensen, Kristen Stewart and Lea Seydoux. 
 
Asia will have a strong showing, despite the absence of China, with films by Park Chan-wook and Hirokazu Kore-eda in competition and 'Squid Game' actor Lee Jung-jae premiering his new film 'Hunt.' 
 
"Everyone wants to sort of come back for this moment, sort of this re-awakening of cinema here in Cannes," said Roxborough. 
 
The festival opens on Tuesday with a zombie film, 'Final cut,' by French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius, who changed the title from 'Z, like Z' to strip out a reference to the letter which has become associated with the war in Ukraine. 
 
The festival banned official Russian delegations from the event but will feature 'Tchaikovski`s Wife' by exiled Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov, who has been outspoken about the war. 
 
Also screening is 'Mariupolis 2' by Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, 45, who was killed in Mariupol, the Ukrainian city heavily bombarded by Russian forces, nearly a month ago while working on the film. His fiancée Hanna Bilobrova, who finished the project, will present it. 
 
Another Ukrainian entry is a debut film from Maksim Nakonechnyi, 'Butterfly Vision,' the story of a young Ukrainian woman who returns to her country after being captured then released in a prisoner swap. 
 
"We will be thinking a lot about film, but we will never stop thinking about what is happening in Ukraine as well," said Fremaux who was peppered with questions about the festival`s position on the war.
