<p>Paramount Pictures, the film studio behind properties like 'Mission: Impossible' and 'Transformers' has settled its lawsuit filed against its insurance company Chubb Limited, reported Variety. In August last year, Paramount had sued Chubb Limited over losses arising due to delays in the production of Tom Cruise-starrer 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One', the seventh film in the venerable franchise, owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The studio had stated that it was owed a lot more than the $1 million amount the insurer was offering.</p>

<p>A joint statement from both parties read, “A formal written settlement agreement has been prepared and is being commented on and finalized. The parties anticipate executing a final written settlement agreement by August 5, 2022.”</p>

<p>Mickey Rourke recently said that Tom Cruise has been doing the same thing for the last 35 years and also called him "irrelevant". Even if that is true, and Cruise is indeed doing the same thing (stunt-drive action films), that is because he is bloody good at it. Cruise has single-handedly nearly monopolised the genre, and whenever one mentions actioners, the first name that comes to mind is likely Cruise. Case in point: his last film 'Top Gun: Maverick' surpassed every box office prediction to become the highest-grossing release in the world this year. By far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie from a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, 'Maverick' is the sequel to the 1986 classic 'Top Gun' and brings back Cruise in the role of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, who is now a test pilot and flight instructor. Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris also star. Val Kilmer returns from the original movie.</p>

<p>The film's humongous global box office returns are partly due to glowing reviews. It has received an impressive 97 per cent score on review aggregation Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads, "Top Gun: Maverick pulls off a feat even trickier than a 4G inverted dive, delivering a long-belated sequel that surpasses its predecessor in wildly entertaining style."</p>

<p>Wion's Shomini Sen wrote in her review of the film, "While 'Top Gun: Maverick' tries to tell a different story from the original and has an impressive new cast on board, it ultimately showcases Cruise in all his glory. He does shy away from filming a full fledged love scene with his on-screen romantic interest Penny (Jennifer Connelly). Instead, they are shown to romance the old fashioned way, with more exhange of words and suggestive moves."</p>

<p>'Top Gun: Maverick' has the box office sizzling... again. In its second weekend of release, Tom Cruise's all-American action film collected a sensational $86 million from 4,751 North American theaters. Those returns rank among the top 10 highest-grossing second weekends in domestic box office history.<br />
<br />
Pandemic times or not, the Paramount and Skydance release is eclipsing significant box office milestones at record speed. After only 10 days on the big screen, "Top Gun: Maverick" has generated $291 million in North America and $548.6 million globally.<br />
<br />
Thanks to positive word of mouth, rapturous reviews and premium screens, ticket sales for "Top Gun: Maverick" dropped only 32% from its $160 million debut over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend. It`s the smallest second-weekend decline for a movie that opened to $100 million or more, according to Comscore. That`s an especially impressive benchmark -- even for a reviewed movie -- because blockbusters, like "Maverick," tend to be front-loaded and drop at least 50% after opening weekend. By comparison, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Marvel`s "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" each declined 67% in its sophomore outing, while Robert Pattinson`s "The Batman" fell 50% in its second weekend and "Eternals" plunged 62%.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-top-gun-maverick-review-joe-kosinskis-film-presents-tom-cruise-in-his-full-glory-482049"><strong>'Top Gun Maverick' review: Tom Cruise and the story are still as impactful as before</strong></a><br />
<br />
Surprisingly, "Top Gun: Maverick" has already become Cruise`s highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, overtaking the record previously held by 2005`s "War of the Worlds" ($243 million).<br />
<br />
"It has never been more appropriate to say `the sky`s the limit` for `Top Gun: Maverick,`" Paramount`s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson wrote in a note to press.<br />
<br />
Few films wanted to compete with "Maverick" for eyeballs, though director David Cronenberg`s body horror film "Crimes of the Future" opened in limited release. From Neon, the movie launched to $1.1 million from 773 theaters, translating to a decent $1,423 per location. Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart star in the gruesome "Crimes of the Future," which premiered at this year`s Cannes Film Festival.<br />
<br />
Without any new releases from major studios, "Top Gun: Maverick" enjoyed free rein over North American box office charts. Holdovers titles "Doctor Strange" sequel, "The Bob`s Burgers Movie," "The Bad Guys" and "Downton Abby: A New Era" took spots two through five.<br />
<br />
In second place, "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" added $9.3 million from 2,430 venues between Friday and Sunday. After five weeks in theaters, the Marvel movie has earned an impressive $388.7 million domestically and a mighty $909.4 million globally. Without playing in China or Russia, which are two major international markets, "Doctor Strange 2" is the ninth-highest grossing title in Disney`s 28-film Marvel Cinematic Universe. It also stands as the highest-grossing release of the year globally and second-biggest earner of the pandemic era.<br />
<br />
Disney and 20th Century`s "The Bob`s Burgers Movie" remained in third place in its sophomore outing. Ticket sales declined 64% to $4.5 million from 3,425 cinemas, bringing its North American tally to $22.2 million. At No. 4, Universal`s animated heist comedy "The Bad Guys" added $3.3 million from 2,872 locations in its seventh weekend of release. To date, the film has amassed $87 million.<br />
<br />
The "Downton Abbey" sequel rounded out the top five with $3 million from 3,471 theater. Since its launch, "Downton Abbey: A New Era" has grossed $34 million in North America. The follow-up to 2019`s "Downton Abbey" cost $40 million to produce, meaning the latest "Downton" adventure has ways to go before getting into the black.<br />
<br />
Elsewhere, A24`s little-indie-that-could "Everything Everywhere All at Once" crossed $60 million domestically in its 11th weekend of release. On the same weekend it landed on home entertainment, the film expanded to 1,434 theaters and grossed $2 million, declining only 18% from the weekend prior. Per A24, the genre-bending "Everything Everywhere All at Once" is expected to surpass "Hereditary" ($80 million) to become A24`s highest-grossing film worldwide. It`s already the studio`s highest-grossing film at the domestic box office, recently passing "Uncut Gems" ($50 million).</p>

By comparison, "Spider-Man: No Way Home" and Marvel`s "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" each declined 67% in its sophomore outing, while Robert Pattinson`s "The Batman" fell 50% in its second weekend and "Eternals" plunged 62%. 'Top Gun Maverick' review: Tom Cruise and the story are still as impactful as before Surprisingly, "Top Gun: Maverick" has already become Cruise`s highest-grossing film ever at the domestic box office, overtaking the record previously held by 2005`s "War of the Worlds" ($243 million). "It has never been more appropriate to say `the sky`s the limit` for `Top Gun: Maverick,`" Paramount`s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson wrote in a note to press. Few films wanted to compete with "Maverick" for eyeballs, though director David Cronenberg`s body horror film "Crimes of the Future" opened in limited release. From Neon, the movie launched to $1.1 million from 773 theaters, translating to a decent $1,423 per location. Viggo Mortensen, Lea Seydoux and Kristen Stewart star in the gruesome "Crimes of the Future," which premiered at this year`s Cannes Film Festival. Without any new releases from major studios, "Top Gun: Maverick" enjoyed free rein over North American box office charts. Holdovers titles "Doctor Strange" sequel, "The Bob`s Burgers Movie," "The Bad Guys" and "Downton Abby: A New Era" took spots two through five. It also stands as the highest-grossing release of the year globally and second-biggest earner of the pandemic era. To date, the film has amassed $87 million. The "Downton Abbey" sequel rounded out the top five with $3 million from 3,471 theater. Since its launch, "Downton Abbey: A New Era" has grossed $34 million in North America. The follow-up to 2019`s "Downton Abbey" cost $40 million to produce, meaning the latest "Downton" adventure has ways to go before getting into the black. It`s already the studio`s highest-grossing film at the domestic box office, recently passing "Uncut Gems" ($50 million).

'Top Gun: Maverick' scores $86 million in massive second weekend

<p>Tom Cruise may have pulled off one of the most daring stunts of his career -- getting audiences to go to the movies for something that doesn`t involve superheroes.<br />
<br />
'Top Gun: Maverick' pulled in blockbuster ticket sales in its opening weekend, collecting $134 million from a record 4,732 North American cinemas. Paramount and Skydance`s all-American action adventure is expected to collect $151 million through Monday, defying expectations while also setting a new high-water mark for Memorial Day opening weekends. That`s thanks to dazzling reviews, heaping doses of nostalgia and getting Cruise back in the cockpit to perform real aerial stunts as pilot Pete 'Maverick'&nbsp;Mitchell.<br />
<br />
'Top Gun: Maverick' is the highest-grossing debut in Cruise's 40-year career, and his first to surpass $100 million on opening weekend. 'War of the Worlds,' which opened to $64 million in 2005, previously stood as Cruise`s biggest opening weekend.</p>

<br />
Audiences over 40 years old, the people who were top of mind when Paramount greenlit a sequel to 1986`s 'Top Gun,' turned out in force, which is impressive because that demographic has been the most reluctant to return to theaters. The film`s positive word of mouth should be helpful in reaching younger audiences, who were not alive when 'Top Gun' opened 36 years ago.<br />
<br />
David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, called the film`s three-day figure "outstanding."<br />
<br />
"The source material remains strong, the execution is excellent, and Tom Cruise makes it work impeccably well," he says.<br />
<br />
'Top Gun: Maverick' continues a stellar box office streak for Paramount, marking the studio`s fifth movie this year to open in first place. Without the assistance of comic books or raging dinosaurs, the studio's 2022 slate -- also consisting of 'Sonic the Hedgehog' ($182 million in North America), 'The Lost City' ($100 million in North America), 'Scream' ($81 million in North America) and 'Jackass Forever' ($57 million in North America) -- has resonated in theaters in a big way. It`s an impressive rebound since Paramount hardly released any movies during the pandemic, instead sending big titles like Chris Pratt`s 'The Tomorrow War,' director Aaron Sorkin`s 'The Trial of the Chicago 7' and Eddie Murphy`s 'Coming 2 America' to streaming services.<br />
<br />
Despite countless delays (the 'Top Gun' sequel was scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 until COVID-19 scrambled those plans), Cruise was adamant that 'Maverick' not follow in the footsteps of those films. The two-year wait has already started to pay off since the film has been rapturously reviewed. It has a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A+' CinemaScore.<br />
<br />
Joseph Kosinski directed the PG-13 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which picks up decades after the original and sees Maverick train a new group of cocky aviators for a crucial assignment. The cast includes Miles Teller, Glen Powell, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the first 'Top Gun.'<br />
<br />
'Top Gun: Maverick' also needs theaters to justify its hefty $170 million production budget, which does not include the tens of millions spent on promoting the movie to audiences worldwide. Those efforts included a splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, which culminated with eight fighter jets flying over the Croisette (the French government paid for those). Skydance Media co-produced and co-financed the film.</p>

Only one film, Disney and 20th Century's 'The Bob's Burgers Movie,' was brave enough to open against 'Top Gun: Maverick.' For a movie that`s based on a long-running animated TV show, 'The Bob`s Burgers Movie' served up an impressive $12 million from 3,425 venues, enough for third place on box office charts. The movie should finish Memorial Day with $15.3 million.</p>

'The Bob`s Burgers Movie' landed just behind 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,' which dropped to No. 2 after three weeks atop domestic box office charts. Disney`s newest Marvel Cinematic Universe installment declined 50% to add $16 million from 3,805 cinemas in its fourth weekend of release. The superhero sequel, starring Benedict Cumberbatch, has generated $375 million to date.<br />
<br />
At No. 4, 'Downton Abbey: A New Era' plunged 63% from its opening, collecting $5.9 million between Friday and Sunday. It`s estimated to earn $7.5 million from 3,830 theaters by Monday. After two weeks in theaters, the sequel to the big-screen continuation of the beloved British television show, has grossed $30 million in North America and $68.9 million worldwide. The follow-up film cost $40 million to produce, meaning the latest "Downton" adventure has ways to go before getting into the black.<br />
<br />
Universal`s animated heist comedy 'The Bad Guys' rounded out the top five with $4.6 million from 2,944 locations. By Monday, the family friendly film should rake in $6.1 million, which will bring its domestic tally to $82 million.</p>

Twitterati review Tom Cruise-starrer ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, here’s what they have to say

Jon Hamm on working with Tom Cruise in 'Top Gun: Maverick'

<p>It's been more than three decades since Tom Cruise made us all fall in love with flying. As US Navy's fighter pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchel in 'Top Gun', Cruise catapulted to the big league and the film earned cult classic status. It is always a big risk to make a sequel to an iconic hit and it took the makers 35 years to come up with 'Top Gun: Maverick'. A film that somewhat picks up from 1986 original but this time with a nearly 60-year-old Tom Cruise at the helm of affairs. Does it work? Yes and mainly due to the film's leading man and his everlasting charm- age notwithstanding.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, 'Top Gun Maverick' begins 35 years from where 'Top Gun' left. Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitche; (Tom Cruise) is now mostly flying solo and has evaded the ranks in his career because he doesn't play by the book- still. A risky pilot, he is summoned by Top Gun- US Navy's flying school for fighter pilots- to train a batch of pilots for a mission that can be fatal. Initially reluctant to take up the job, Maverick does take on the job on the behest of his old colleague and friend Ice (Val Kilmer in a special cameo) who is now an admiral in the US Navy.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img alt="t" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="8e808c1b-75b9-46e1-b8b1-44e5fead1e43" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Untitled%20design%20-%202022-05-25T153825.477.jpg" /><br />
<br />
Maverick though has personal demons to fight as one of the students in the course is Lieutenant Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw(Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's late best friend and RIO Nick 'Goose' Bradshaw (played by Anthony Edwards in the original).&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-exclusive-tom-cruise-can-do-everybodys-job-he-is-terrific-says-top-gun-maverick-producer-481890" hreflang="en">Exclusive! Tom Cruise can do everybody's job, he is terrific, says 'Top Gun: Maverick' producer&nbsp;</a></strong><br />
<br />
Rooster and Maverick's relationship is a strained one and that hinders Maverick from taking a few calls in the training program initially. With undercurrent tensions, will Maverick be able to train the pilots for a job that can risk their lives?&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Hollywood is crowded with superhero action films and most thrillers resort to VFX to make cutting edge films. Makers of 'Top Gun: Maverick' reportedly trained some of their actors inside the cockpit for 3 months before filming- which makes the film's experience far more authentic.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Of course, some of the moments in the film are almost a replica of the original- of the shirtless pilots playing beach volleyball, of the bromance and rivalry between the pilots-&nbsp;typical of a good old Hollywood actioner, but somehow it works. The scenes between Cruise and Teller are well performed and well written- you can sense the uneasiness between the two characters right from the beginning. The scene featuring Cruise and Kilmer is special and slightly emotional and rides high nostalgia.&nbsp;</p>

<p><img alt="t" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="51dcf6eb-08c2-45e7-a84b-d87ec44326e1" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Untitled%20design%20-%202022-05-25T153727.002.jpg" /><br />
<br />
While 'Top Gun: Maverick' tries to tell a different story from the original and has an impressive new cast on board, it ultimately showcases Cruise in all his glory. At 60 he is fitter than some of his peers and doesn't shy away from going shirtless on screen. He does shy away from filming a full fledged love scene with his on-screen romantic interest Penny (Jennifer Connelly). Instead, they are shown to romance the old fashioned way, with more exhange of words and suggestive moves.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Cruise's presence looms large and he doesn't disappoint his fans. He delivers a summer blockbuster, playing the Alpha-male to the hilt who can die for his country, romance the honourable way, play a father figure to his students and fight his inner demons while being commissioned on one of the toughest missions of his career.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Other actors like John Hamm as Vice Admiral, Jennifer Connelly as the spirited Penny, and Miles Teller as the angsty Rooster are equally good in their roles- complementing Cruise in every scene and playing their part well.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
'Top Gun: Maverick' is predictable by the end, but it still manages to hold your attention with the glorious camera work by Claudio Miranda. The airshow with fighter jets racing against time and the enemy is well captured on screen and is best viewed on the big screen.</p>

There's very little that goes against the film, really. 'Top Gun: Maverick' is your typical summer blockbuster. It has got a bit of everything- action, romance, comedy and thrilling fighter planes. For those who grew up watching and loving Tom Cruise and his films, it's a perfect post-pandemic gift from one of Hollywood's biggest stars.&nbsp;<br />

'Top Gun Maverick' review: Tom Cruise and the story are still as impactful as before

Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer has collaborated with Tom Cruise after 35 years to create the sequel of the 1986 classic ‘Top Gun’. The sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ hits screen this week, worldwide and has Bruckheimer and Cruise as co-producer.

In an exclusive chat with WION, Bruckheimer gave credit to Cruise for being the ‘better producer’. “Tom can do everybody's job. He is a terrific actor. He is a better producer than I am and surrounds himself with great people,” said the producer praising his leading man. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has Cruise reprising his role as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchel who is summoned by the US Navy to train a new batch of fighter pilots who have to go on a mission in eight weeks. Considering it's the sequel of sorts to the 1986 classic, was it a risk that Bruckheimer took? “Of course,” said Bruckheimer. “We had to make sure that it’s as good as you can make a film. Tom always said 'You gotta hit a bullet with a bullet'. So we all worked very hard. We had terrific writers, Joe Kosinski is a fabulous director to have directed the movie.” “When you have excellent people around you, you can make a make a really good movie,” the producer said with a smile. Apart from Tom Cruise, the only other actor who has been retained from the original film is actor Val Kilmer who played Ice Man in the original. Bruckheimer considers the scene between Cruise and Kilmer in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ as his favourite one. “It's a terrific scene. It's all about emotions. Storytelling is an emotional ride. We want the audience to experience what we experienced while making this movie which was so much fun.” Val Kilmer shares a 'special throwback' photo of the original 'Top Gun' cast When he was asked why the team took so long to come up with a sequel, Bruckheimer said, “It’s not that we didn’t try. We just never came on with the right story. But we all went off to make other films. You've seen my filmography, you've seen Tom's filmography. So we went to work with other people and finally came together thanks to Joe who figured out a story that Tom and all of us wanted to make. Jerry Bruckheimer is one of the most prominent producers in Hollywood. He has given the world some iconic action films and popular franchises like ‘Bad Boys’, ‘Days of Thunder’, ‘Armageddon’, ‘Pirates of The Caribbean’ among others. Cannes 2022: Tom Cruise arrives in style for 'Top Gun: Maverick' premiere Bruckheimer though states that he chooses a script based on whether he as an audience would want to watch it on screen. “Do I want to see it? I don't know if you want to see it or the audience wants to see it- I know what I like. Someday what I like - maybe the audience won’t like and I’ll be out of the business. But right now I still think I can make films that audiences will enjoy,” he said. Some of the cast members including Cruise went through training inside actual planes. Some of the actors were made to go through vigorous training inside the cockpit as well. “It took 15 months to figure out how to get the cameras inside the cockpit,” revealed Bruckheimer. “What you are seeing is what they experienced on screen. It's all very real,” he added. Moments when Tom Cruise’s terrible behaviour made controversial headlines Will, there be a third part in 'Top Gun' series, we ask. “Let's enjoy this one. Let the audience experience and then see what happens. We are thrilled to bring this one to the audience. It took a long time,” the maker added without indulging more. We want to take you away from your life for a couple of hours to enjoy what we do and so you can feel better when you walk out than you walked in." 'Top Gun: Maverick' releases in India on May 26.
