'I wouldn't be comfortable doing that': England's Jos Buttler says no family, no Ashes tour

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has warned Joe Root-led team not to write India off the fourth Test in south London and the final match at Old Trafford as the Indian side has the ability to make a comeback. England levelled the five-match series 1-1 after the stunning win in the third Test at Headingley. &nbsp;

Now, Hussain has said the English side not to get too confident and gave an example of India's epic show in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year when they were dismissed for just 36 while losing the first Test against Australia in Adelaide in December only for an injury-hit squad to claim a memorable 2-1 series win.&nbsp;

In his latest column for The Telegraph, Hussain wrote: "At Headingley, England swung the ball round corners. Skilful as India's seam bowlers are they did not swing the ball at all."

Cricket: INDvsENG- Virat Kohli-led team wore red caps for a special cause during Day 2 of Lord's Test

Kraigg&nbsp;Brathwaite&nbsp;ran himself out for 97 but the West Indies captain's typically obdurate innings worked his team into a potentially useful first innings lead over Pakistan on day two of the first Test at Sabina Park on Friday.

With support from former skipper Jason Holder (58) in a pivotal&nbsp;sixth-wicket partnership of 96, the home side rallied from the discomfort of 100 for five to 251 for eight at stumps, a lead of 34 runs with two wickets in hand going into the third day.

Starting the morning with his team already in trouble at two for two, replying to the tourists' first day total of 217,&nbsp;Brathwaite&nbsp;played his favourite sheet-anchor role to perfection.

The phlegmatic opener put on 50 with overnight partner Roston Chase (21) for the third wicket, followed immediately by a stand of 49 with Jermaine Blackwood.

However Blackwood's demise to Shaheen Shah Afridi was followed next ball by the dismissal of Kyle Mayers, tilting the balance of the contest Pakistan's way.

That balance could have been decisively theirs just two balls later when Shaheen got a leg-before verdict against Holder before he had scored, only for the decision to be overturned on review of the television replay.

It proved a critical reprieve as Holder's innings, initially watchful against the faster bowlers, blossomed with the introduction of the infrequently-used wrist-spinner Yasir Shah.

Yet it was the deceptive pace of Faheem Ashraf which broke the partnership after tea just as Babar Azam's men seemed to be running out of ideas.&nbsp;

Holder edged a delivery through to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan to leave all attention focused on&nbsp;Brathwaite&nbsp;as he crept towards what would have been his 11th Test century.

All that hard work was undone by his own error of judgement.

As he turned a delivery from Yasir to short fine-leg, he decided to come back for a second run only for Hasan Ali's direct hit to find him well short of his ground.

Brathwaite's innings, following a succession of low scores amid his team's struggles in the two-Test series against South Africa in St Lucia two months earlier, spanned six hours during which he faced 221 deliveries and struck 12 fours.

"I would have loved to have been there at the end and to get three figures, but it was my error and I have to take responsibility for that," he said in reflecting on his effort.&nbsp;

"I would like us to show the same fight we did today and when we start bowling again, we need to be disciplined and that should be the key."

Pakistan's hopes of a swift end to the West Indies innings were thwarted by Joshua da Silva.

He ensured the threat of the second new ball did not completely overwhelm the tail and allows the home side to continue on the third morning hoping to extend what could already be an uncomfortable deficit for their opponents.

Having ended day one with two wickets in two balls, Mohammad Abbas finished day two with the wicket of Kemar Roach to lead the bowling effort for Pakistan with figures of three for 42.

Cricket: WIvsPAK, 1st Test- Kraigg Brathwaite misses century as West Indies edge ahead of Pakistan

England captain Joe Root's latest rescue mission with the bat could not prevent India maintaining their grip on the second Test at Lord's on Friday.

The hosts were 119-3 at stumps on the second day, still 245 runs adrift of India's first-innings 364.

But amid yet another top-order collapse, star batsman Root was 48 not out.

England's position could have been worse after India resumed on 276-3 but pace-bowling great James Anderson kept the tourists in check with 5-62.

"India probably still have the edge but if we can get a couple of big partnerships that gets us right back in the game," said Anderson.

Root had come in with England struggling at 23-2 after paceman Mohammed Siraj took two wickets in successive deliveries -- with the recalled Haseeb Hameed out for a golden duck.

Rory Burns and Root repaired some of that damage in a third-wicket partnership of 85 before the left-handed opener was lbw for 49 to Mohammed Shami.

'Superhuman Root'

"Joe's been amazing throughout his career and the stats in the last 12 months, with the pandemic and everything, it's been superhuman," said Anderson.

The second ball after tea saw Dom Sibley, on 11, tamely chip Siraj to midwicket -- a repeat of the struggling opener's careless first-innings dismissal during last week's rain-marred drawn first Test in Nottingham.

His exit brought in Hameed, playing his first Test since the last of his three previous caps, all in India five years ago.&nbsp;

But 24-year-old Hameed's long wait for a home debut Test innings ended first ball, bowled playing down the wrong line to Siraj.

England were 23-2 -- the 15th time in their 19 Test innings this year they had lost their second wicket before reaching 50.&nbsp;

That left Root, the lone England batsman to pass fifty at Trent Bridge with scores of 64 and 109, facing a familiar repair job.

Root blocked the hat-trick ball and a square-cut four off Ishant Sharma that took him to 14 saw him surpass Graham Gooch's tally of 8,900 Test runs to go second behind Alastair Cook (12,472) in England's all-time list.

Earlier, Anderson took his 31st five-wicket haul in 164 Tests and seventh at Lord's.

"It definitely is as special," said Anderson, who took his first Test-match 'five for' at the 'home of cricket' 18 years ago.&nbsp;

"To get seven here is just incredible really...Hopefully, it's not my last time on the honours board."

Anderson's latest impressive return came amid some sloppy England fielding, with several catches dropped and run-out chances missed.

It was a particularly commendable return given the 39-year-old Anderson had come into this game nursing a thigh problem.

England were already without Stuart Broad after Anderson's longstanding new-ball partner had been ruled out of the rest of this five-Test series with a calf injury.

"I don't feel an extra responsibility because he (Broad) is not here," said Anderson, whose current tally of 626 Test wickets has been bettered only by two retired spinners in Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan (800 Tests) and Australia's Shane Warne (708).

But it was Ollie Robinson who made the key breakthrough when, with just Friday's second ball, he had KL Rahul mistiming a drive to short cover for 129 after the opener had added just two runs to his overnight score.

It was the end of a more than six-and-a-half hour innings of 250 balls that included 12 fours and a six, with Rahul also sharing an excellent first-wicket stand of 126 with Rohit Sharma.

"I was feeling good and fresh this morning so I was really frustrated I missed out on a juicy half-volley," Rahul said.

This innings followed Rahul's 84 in the first Test, where he was only selected after Mayank Agarwal was hit on the head batting in the nets at Trent Bridge.

Rahul, turning to the match position, added: "We know there's not a lot happening off the pitch and we will need to be really disciplined with our lines and lengths."

Form skipper of the Pakistan cricket team Inzamam-ul-Haq said that "India will be favourites" to win the five-match Test series between India and England, of which the first ended giving no result after the match at Trent Bridge on Sunday was washed out.

The play on the fifth and final day was called off due to rain and not even a single ball was bowled. Chasing 209 runs to win, India were looking good as they were 52/1 overnight and needed 157 runs to win. The next match series will be kick off from August 12 at Lord's.&nbsp;

While speaking in a video on his Youtube channel, Inzamam said, "I think India will be favorites moving forward in this Test series. I am not saying this because of their performance in the first Test. I feel that way because of the youngsters, who have come in recently in the last two years."

But after these youngsters came in, India has been doing well while touring abroad," he added.&nbsp;

"Obviously because 183 as per me we should make a good score and take the lead. We are in a good position because any team you bowl out for 183 at its home is a good performance," he said.

"Now the thing is that we need to focus on the first hour and according to me the ball has not done much, the way we bowled in the day, we bowled in the right length, and accordingly you have got wickets. I think, we need to focus, and doesn’t matter whether it is 183 or 283, you need to focus a bit and need to add runs,”&nbsp;he added.

The main focus will be to score 183 and after that whatever comes,” he concluded.

Andrew Strauss said that it was terrible to see England capitulate to the pressure factor.&nbsp;

"I thought that Indian bowlers were outstanding today. Hunted in packs and they were very accurate, they built pressure on England batsmen. It's very hard not to feel dejected if you are an England fan right now," he said.

England top-order yet again neglected to get the work done. While Rory Burns was out for a duck in the first over, Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley failed to convert over the beginnings.&nbsp;

Joe Root once again rescued his side with a splendid half-century. However, he needed help from the opposite end with Dan Lawrence and Jos Buttler getting out for ducks.&nbsp;

"It is a recurring thing. We have seen a lot of this over the last 18 months. What i struggle with is these batsmen got in and then got out," he said.&nbsp;

"You look at Sibley, who battled hard for 18, you look at Crawley who got 27, you look at Bairstow who got 29. They got out and then new batsmen come in and that gives Indian bowlers something to work with," he added.

"If you get in go big and England haven't done that for a long time now and yet again it falls on Joe Root to hold the team together. When you are a captain you don't wanna have to be forced to be you all the time," he concluded

Former India pacer Ashish Nehra feels if opening batsman Rohit Sharma has a good England tour, the chances of India winning the series against the Three Lions would increase.

India and England will lock horns in a five-match Test series beginning Wednesday at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The series will mark the start of the second cycle of the World Test Championship.

"The team management earlier said that we are looking at KL Rahul in the middle order. But see, I have seen KL Rahul as an opener in white-ball format. Before Hanuma Vihari, why not KL Rahul? Although I already feel that we have too many people floating around the opening slot, I hope Rohit plays all Tests. If I had to take chance, I would rather go in with KL Rahul as an opener," said Nehra during a virtual press conference organised by a media outlet.&nbsp;

"I really hope Rohit Sharma has a good England tour. If he has a good tour, then we as a team, our chances will be much better. If you can start well, it will keep a strong foundation," he added.

When asked whether Mohammed Siraj should be given a go in the first Test, Nehra said: "Yes, Mohammed Siraj is waiting in the wings but he has to wait for his turn. Everybody knows that Siraj is a very skillful bowler but here you are talking about a guy like Jasprit Bumrah who has done really well in the last five-six years since his arrival. You have to start with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Ishant Sharma."

"If you want a fourth fast bowler, we are not there, the captain, coach, and team management can take a call based on who has been bowling well. Whether you want to go with Umesh Yadav or you want to play Siraj. But if you are playing three seamers then you will start with Bumrah, Shami, and Ishant unless there is an injury to any of them," he added.

Nehra also said that he does not agree with the concept that every bowler needs to be able to swing the ball in England to get success. "I don`t agree that you need only swing bowlers in England. Look at somebody like Stuart Broad. Even Jofra Archer is not a swing bowler. But they are England`s main weapons, so a lot depends on how you bowl and it`s not like Bumrah or Shami can`t swing the ball or they need one particular surface to achieve results," said Nehra.

Answering a question of whether India has the best possible opportunity to defeat England in England with Ben Stokes opting out of the series, Nehra said: "See, you cannot say this is the best opportunity. In 2007, India won 1-0 when Rahul Dravid was the captain, but you should not think of it like a now or never situation. England has resources, new players are coming in and they are going through a transition. Ben Stokes is not there, but Buttler is there. You are talking about a team sport, Stokes is an all-rounder, but that can happen to any team. India has to play really well to defeat England in England."

When asked what sort of combination India should opt for in the series against England, Nehra said: "It all depends on the surface you are playing. When you talk about three-four seamers, these discussions just happen when you are playing in England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand. There is more life on the pitches, I agree but it is not like there is swing available on every pitch you play."

India's tour of England will be live on SONY SIX channels from 3.30 pm IST on August 4.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: ENGvsIND: Cricket is secondary, just want my friend to be okay, says Joe Root on Ben Stokes "If you want a fourth fast bowler, we are not there, the captain, coach, and team management can take a call based on who has been bowling well. India has to play really well to defeat England in England." When asked what sort of combination India should opt for in the series against England, Nehra said: "It all depends on the surface you are playing. When you talk about three-four seamers, these discussions just happen when you are playing in England, Australia, South Africa, or New Zealand. There is more life on the pitches, I agree but it is not like there is swing available on every pitch you play." India's tour of England will be live on SONY SIX channels from 3.30 pm IST on August 4.

The cricket fans are excitedly hanging tight for the eagerly awaited five-match Test series between England and India which gets under from August 4 in Nottingham.&nbsp;

Ahead of the first match, Virat Kohli spoke with former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik during which the Indian skipper uncovered his point of view to play a Test match on English soil. He said it takes 'relentless madness’ and single-minded pursuit of excellence to win a Test series here.

“I’ll answer your second question first, it takes 'relentless madness and the pursuit of excellence' every day on a series of five tests, to tell you that I want to do the hard work and that I want to find myself in tough situations every test match every day," he said.

“For Indian cricket, it will be a huge thing and we have done it before and we can do it again, but this culture is what is dearest to me and I will do whatever I can, even if you lose a test match," said the Indian skipper.

“I want us to aim for the win and not surrender and try to save a test match on the third or fourth day, that’s just not acceptable to me,” he added

“So for me, as I said, the milestones don’t matter. If I had played for milestones in my career, I probably wouldn’t have half of what I have right now. My state of mind is quite clear and for us, it’s just the pursuit of excellence," he concluded.

Stuart Broad has expressed there will be no reasons when England go head to head against India in the five-match Test series in the not-so-distant future in August. Stuart Broad featured how because of hectic schedules and COVID-19, they set up a weakened side against New Zealand, which prompted their first Test series loss at home in quite a while.&nbsp;

With three high-profile series coming up - 5 a match Test series against India, the T20 World Cup, and the Ashes - Broad backed the group's choice to rest some players like Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes, Moeen Ali, and Jonny Bairstow. Nonetheless, Stuart Broad rushed to add that there will be no space for pardons when they go head to head against India later.&nbsp;

In his segment for Daily Mail, he wrote:&nbsp;"It’s heartbreaking to lose a first home Test series in seven years but let’s be realistic due to schedules, Covid and bubbles, we were a weakened side. We will want our full-strength team on the field against India, in the Twenty20 World Cup and the Ashes. If we had our top team against New Zealand, where would we have given players a break? However, there will be no excuses when it comes to results from the India series onwards."

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher on Wednesday confirmed that Quinton de Kock will no longer continue as the Test skipper after the second match against Pakistan. Boucher`s remarks came on the eve of the second Test against Pakistan, set to begin on Thursday at Rawalpindi.

"When we get back after this tour we`ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden and try and get the best out of him. It`s been tough on Quinny. If you`re not scoring runs it gets highlighted, especially if you`re a captain," ESPNCricinfo quoted Boucher as saying.

"We`re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he`s a quality player and there`s a good innings around the corner for him. He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he`s not used to," he added.

De Kock was appointed as the Test skipper for the 2020-21 summer until a permanent candidate was zeroed in.

Nauman Ali had made a memorable debut for Pakistan as he picked seven wickets, including a five-wicket haul in the second innings of the first Test, to power his side to a win over South Africa by seven wickets on day four.

With this win, Pakistan took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Chasing the target of 88, Pakistan openers Imran Butt and Abid Ali avoided risky shots as the team was not chasing a huge target. However, Anrich Nortje came out all guns blazing in the eighth over, removing both Abid (10) and Butt (12).

Azhar Ali and skipper Azam then joined hands in the middle. Both played brilliantly, scoring regular boundaries but with the team just two runs away, Keshav Maharaj dismissed Babar (30) in the 23rd over. Fawad Alam then came out and hit a boundary to take Pakistan over the line.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been toying with the Aussie and is preventing him to score runs for the hosts. Smith has scored only 10 runs in 4 innings in the series so far while being dismissed by Ashwin two times.

“I’ve sort of let him dictate terms and that’s something I’ve probably never let any spinner do in my career. I’ve sort of taken it to them, been a bit more aggressive and made them change things,” he said.

While speaking to a YouTube channel Cricket Baaz, he said: "I think Australia’s fast bowling is the best in the world. They have Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and other top-class bowlers. It will be a close contest but I would say Australia start off as favourites."

However, Akmal also said that Indians have a competitive bowling line up.&nbsp;

"Mohammad Shami, Bumrah, [Navdeep] Saini and others are good," he said.

He went on to say that the Indian squad has been high on self-confidence. "Mohammad Shami, Bumrah, [Navdeep] Saini and others are good," he said.

"Their body language shows they believe in themselves and the hard work they are putting in. I would say ‘Indian players thode badmash ho gaye hai’, (Indian players have become a little mischievous)," he said.

According to Akram, Smith and Warner will bolster Australia's batting unit but the pitches and conditions will be a deciding factor. "When the Kookaburra ball gets old you have to think about how to keep runs down as the wickets are tough to come by," he said.

New Zealand beat India by 7 wickets, tour ends with consecutive whitewash

Pakistan celebrated the return of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Dimuth+Karunaratne">Test cricket</a> for the first time in over 10 years with a convincing 263-run win over Sri Lanka in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=Dimuth+Karunaratne">second test </a>in Karachi on Monday, taking the series 1-0.

It took just 14 minutes and 16 balls for Pakistan to wrap up the win on the fifth morning as they took Sri Lanka's last three wickets without any addition to their overnight 212.

Pakistan had set a daunting 476-run target on Sunday and reduced the tourists to 212-7 at the close.

Teenage quick bowler Naseem Shah at 16 years and 307 days became the second youngest bowler to take five wickets in a Test innings as he bowled an express spell to finish with 5-31.

Fellow Pakistani and left-arm spinner Nasim-ul-Ghani holds the record and was just four days younger when he completed the feat against the West Indies at Georgetown in a 1957-58 series.

Naseem was aged six when international cricket was suspended in Pakistan following an attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009.

Pakistan was forced to play all their home matches at the neutral venues of United Arab Emirates before improved security allowed them to begin hosting limited-over series over the past four years.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/karachi-test-day-1-pakistan-batsmen-fail-to-grab-initiative-against-lanka-269218">first test of the series</a> in Rawalpindi marked the return of Test cricket in Pakistan, but it ended in a draw after being spoiled by bad weather.

Pakistan skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/our-pride-has-been-hurt-says-azhar-ali-after-losing-test-series-against-australia-266799">Azhar Ali</a> thanked Sri Lanka for their part in allowing Test cricket to return.

"Special thanks to Sri Lanka from the bottom of our hearts," said Azhar. "They have given us immense happiness by playing in Pakistan, it was pretty emotional."

"Naseem is a special talent and we can build on our bowling attack in the years to come."

Sri Lankan skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/suranga-lakmal-to-miss-sri-lankas-tour-of-pakistan-due-to-dengue-267040">Dimuth Karunaratne</a> praised Pakistan.

"We dominated the first two days and then they batted very well and put pressure back on us and outplayed us. We couldn't build pressure with the ball despite taking a lead of 80," said Karunaratne.

Pakistan turned the match on its head with a huge second-innings 555-3 declared on Sunday, with 174 from man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series Abid Ali, 135 from Shan Masood, 118 from Azhar and 100 not out from Babar Azam as the top four all reached three figures.&nbsp;

Abid had also scored a hundred in the first Test.

The final day began in a dramatic manner when Naseem dismissed Lasit Embuldeniya off the first ball, catching his gloves on the way to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan.

From the other end leg-spinner,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/brisbane-test-australia-beat-pakistan-by-an-innings-and-5-runs-264221">Yasir Shah</a> had Oshada Fernando caught in the slip for his overnight score of 102 after a 180-ball knock that contained 13 boundaries.

Naseem wrapped up the match by trapping Vishwa Fernando with the fifth ball of the next over, triggering jubilation among the Pakistan players who were all playing in their first Test series at home.

It is Pakistan's first series win at home against Sri Lanka since 1992.&nbsp;

The win lifts Pakistan to third in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-new-zealand-spearhead-boult-a-doubt-for-first-test-267610">World Test Championship</a> table with 80 points. Pakistan got 60 points from the win and 20 from the first Test draw.

India (360) and Australia (216) are currently first and second. Nine teams are competing in the Championship, with the top two contesting the final in June 2021.

Pakistan celebrated the return of Test cricket for the first time in over 10 years with a convincing 263-run win over Sri Lanka in the second test in Karachi on Monday, taking the series 1-0.

Cricket: Pakistan seal triumphant Test cricket return with Sri Lanka win

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne steered Australia to 70 for one in the opening session of the day-night second Test against Pakistan in Adelaide Friday, justifying skipper Tim Paine's decision to bat first.

On an overcast afternoon and with the floodlights on from the first ball, Warner was not out 45 and Labuschagne on 18 in ominous signs for the visitors, after the pair both made centuries in the first Test in Brisbane.

Pakistan need to win to square the two-match series, but the odds are heavily stacked against them, having lost 13 consecutive Tests in Australia.

Over the years, taking wickets in Australia has been a challenge for Pakistan and they shuffled their bowling attack for the pink-ball Test.

Veteran seamer Mohammad Abbas, who tormented Australia when he took 17 wickets in two Tests in the UAE last October, returned in place of Imran Khan while 16-year-old pace sensation Naseem Shah was rested.

That meant a debut for 19-year-old medium-fast right-armer Muhammad Musa, but it was Shaheen Afridi who stood out and gave Pakistan early hope by snaring Joe Burns.

With the ball moving off the seam, the opener got an edge to Mohammad Rizwan behind the stumps and was out for four.&nbsp;

That only brought Labuschagne to the crease.

He made 185 in the first Test and Warner 154, with the pair putting their heads down to grind out runs, picking off loose balls to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Warner smacked eight fours, with Musa mostly on the receiving end, as he neared a 31st Test half-century.

But the economical Afridi made it tough going, getting the ball to swing and seam before the teams left the field five minutes early due to drizzle.
