US President Donald Trump floated the idea of renaming the Strait of Hormuz to ‘Trump Strait’ in a social media post on Wednesday, asserting that the US control of the crucial waterway could warrant the move.“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” the president wrote, adding, “Like America itself, it would be ‘hotter’ than ever before!”&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Trump’s proposal is striking not just because of the name he wants to give the strait, but because the waterway is not US territory. The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and is an international maritime passage vital to global energy supplies.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/xi-jinping-urges-middle-east-nations-to-reject-external-interference-seek-new-security-architecture-1788367177952">Xi Jinping urges Middle East nations to reject ‘external’ interference, seek new ‘security architecture’</a>&nbsp;Trump earlier suggested that he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a US territory.“Essentially, that’s what it is,” the president said in a speech to law enforcement officers in New York last month. “We have the blockade. More than 17 million barrels of oil passed through the Strait of Hormuz by ship on Monday (Aug 31), marking the highest wartime flow since the conflict between the US and Iran began on February 28, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Wednesday (Sep 2).Speaking to CNBC, Wright claimed that when Saudi Arabia’s and the United Arab Emirates’ pipelines that bypass the strait are included, regional oil exports on Monday exceeded levels seen before the war. Before the conflict, about 20 million barrels per day of crude and petroleum products moved through Hormuz.<h2>Iran’s losing leverage over global oil trade?</h2>Wright said Tehran was gradually losing its ability to use the strait as a pressure point on the global economy as the US military helps commercial tankers navigate the waterway.Iran is “causing some disruption but they are losing that card,” Wright told CNBC, arguing that US-backed shipping operations were reducing Tehran’s ability to restrict energy supplies.“With or without Iran, oil and gas will flow out of the Arabian Gulf region and it’s happening,” Wright said. The comments came during an interview with CNBC’s Brian Sullivan in Venezuela, five days after President Donald Trump announced a major oil agreement with Caracas’ interim government.<h2>Tankers face continued attacks</h2>The US military has established a shipping corridor along Oman’s coast for tankers operated by Gulf allies. Many vessels travel through the route at night and switch off their transponders to lower the risk of being targeted.Iran has repeatedly demanded that commercial ships instead use a northern route through Iranian waters and has attacked vessels using the US-protected corridor. At least two tankers have been attacked in Hormuz this week, according to incident reports from the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre. On Wednesday (Sep 2), US crude futures fell roughly 1 per cent after briefly approaching $90 a barrel as fresh US-Iran military exchanges ended a period of relative calm.Wright also defended Washington’s higher oil-flow estimates, saying US military and Energy Department data also capture covert tanker movements that private tracking firms can miss.

Iran’s Supreme Leader has called on Muslim countries, particularly the Gulf states, to unite against what he described as their “real enemy,” warning that divisions among Muslim nations only serve those seeking to weaken the region.

In a written message marking Islamic Unity Week, the Iranian leader said Muslim unity was a key foundation for building what he described as a victorious Islamic civilisation. He also urged Muslim countries to understand the plans of their adversaries and confront what he sees as common threats.

The message comes as Gulf states face growing security concerns amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States. Countries including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman and Qatar have longstanding security ties with Washington while simultaneously maintaining important economic and political relationships across the wider region.

The United States says it has achieved a major breakthrough in the Strait of Hormuz. But the bigger question is whether Washington’s declaration that the crucial waterway is now free of Iranian sea mines matches the reality faced by commercial ships.US Central Command commander Adm. Brad Cooper on Thursday (Aug 27) claimed that American forces had cleared Iranian mines from internationally recognised shipping routes. “We have successfully cleared sea mines in the strait’s international shipping lanes that were laid months ago by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” he said.<h2>Did US really clear mines from Hormuz?</h2>The Pentagon’s confidence rests on an operation in which more than 200 mine-like objects were removed from the main shipping lane. However, according to an Axios report citing US officials, 11 of them were actually mines, with just a few properly deployed. That distinction matters when assessing how serious the threat was – and how much the operation has truly changed conditions.President Donald Trump offered an emphatic assessment: “That sucker is open. The Iranian response is very mild. They don’t want us to go back at them. That’s the whole ball game. The rest doesn’t matter,” he told Axios.<h2>Are US shipping claims overstated?</h2>But oil experts and tanker trackers remain sceptical of US claims that traffic has recovered as strongly as officials suggest. Washington says 20 to 30 tankers are now crossing the southern channel each night, carrying around 9 to 10 million barrels of oil. That is still only about half the pre-war volume.<h2>Iran rejects US control</h2>Iran, meanwhile, has rejected the idea that US military control guarantees lasting security. Parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned: “In a region where we don’t sell oil, no one else will sell oil either.”He has also argued that the security of the Strait of Hormuz depends on the “absence” of US troops. The dispute exposes the larger problem. Clearing mines may reopen a physical passage, but does it make the Strait of Hormuz genuinely secure? With tankers still reportedly coming under attack and oil flows below normal levels, Washington’s declaration of victory may be premature. The real test will not be what US officials say has been cleared – but how many ships are willing to sail through the strait.

US plays ‘mine games’ over Hormuz: Iranian mines gone, but is the strait safe?

Iran has hit back at US President Donald Trump, with a senior Iranian official labelling him “schizophrenic” over his remarks on the Strait of Hormuz and urging countries to reject what Tehran called Washington’s “illegal” sanctions. Trump had earlier described the Strait of Hormuz as “open” and said Iran’s response to US military action was “very moderate”, according to US news outlet Axios. He added that Tehran did not want the US to attack it again. The remarks came amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over sanctions targeting Iran’s economy and pressure on countries trading with the Islamic Republic. In a separate statement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry urged the international community not to enforce the US sanctions, calling them “completely illegal and unjustified”. The ministry said the measures violated the UN Charter, international humanitarian law and human rights, and argued that countries should neither impose the sanctions nor recognise their effects. Also read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/great-near-great-below-average-trump-puts-himself-above-lincoln-washington-in-bizarre-ranking-of-greatest-us-presidents-1787903513307">‘Great, near great, below average’: Trump puts himself above Lincoln, Washington in bizarre ranking of ‘greatest’ US presidents</a>Tehran warned that countries joining the US pressure campaign would be helping impose Washington’s policies on sovereign states and disrupt legitimate economic and commercial relations. The US military on Thursday (Aug 27) said that it has cleared Iranian sea mines from internationally recognised transit routes in the Strait of Hormuz, marking what Central Command described as a major milestone in efforts to restore shipping through the strategic waterway. In a video posted on X, US Central Command chief Admiral Brad Cooper said American forces had completed the mine-clearing operation after months of disruption in the strait.“The US military has achieved a major milestone in the Strait of Hormuz,” Cooper said.“We have successfully cleared sea mines in the strait’s international shipping lanes that were laid months ago by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Internationally recognised transit routes in the strait are free of Iranian sea mines, thanks to the incredible work of the US military.”Cooper said the development could help ease restrictions on commercial shipping. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for the global oil and gas trade, has seen traffic plunge during the nearly six-month conflict with Iran.

“Bottom line: today, international shipping lanes are open and momentum is building,” Cooper said in a separate video message.US forces have assisted around 1,500 commercial vessels carrying nearly 750 million barrels of crude oil through the strait in recent months, according to the CENTCOM commander.Despite Washington’s claims that the shipping lanes are open, commercial traffic remains far below normal. Many vessels have avoided the waterway amid continued Iranian threats, while ship-tracking services have estimated activity at only about 5 per cent to 15 per cent of usual levels. The disruption has also added pressure to global energy markets. In the United States, the average price of a gallon of regular petrol stood at about $4.10 late Thursday, compared with roughly $3.21 a year earlier, according to AAA.The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization has reported 70 incidents in the Strait of Hormuz since the war began, with 19 seafarers killed. The mine-clearing operation removes one major obstacle, but whether shipping returns to normal may depend on whether vessels believe the strait is truly safe to cross.

Iran has agreed to draw up a list of conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as mediators renew efforts to restore shipping through the crucial waterway six months after the war disrupted global trade. The move followed fresh diplomatic pressure from Qatar, whose prime minister travelled to Tehran on Thursday (Aug 27) and urged Iranian leaders to respect freedom of navigation in the strait.Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani later said he had stressed to senior Iranian officials “the importance of respecting freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.”Iran, however, appears unwilling to reopen the waterway without extracting concessions from Washington. 'Militarily closed': Iran says Oman route does not mean Strait of Hormuz is reopening

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors, has become increasingly difficult to track as the war between Iran, the US, and Israel continues. Before the conflict, fewer than 1 per cent of vessels crossing the strait were classified as "dark". Since July 8, that figure has risen to around two-thirds of all transits, according to maritime intelligence firm Kpler. But what exactly does "dark" mean, and why does it matter?<h2>What is a 'dark' ship transit?</h2>In this context, "dark" does not necessarily mean that a vessel is operating illegally or secretly. It means that its exact route cannot be confirmed because of gaps in available tracking data.According to Kpler, these gaps can result from disabled transponders, jammed signals, or missing satellite imagery. When tracking systems cannot establish where a vessel crossed the waterway, that transit is recorded as unknown or "dark".Before the war, the vast majority of vessels followed the traditional corridor through the centre of the Strait of Hormuz, making their movements relatively easy to track. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-calls-strait-of-hormuz-american-territory-vows-iran-will-never-get-nuclear-weapon-1787385976123">Trump calls Strait of Hormuz 'American territory', vows Iran will never get nuclear weapon</a><h2>Why are so many transits now going dark?</h2>The pattern changed after Iran closed the strait following the outbreak of the war.The waterway now effectively has two competing routes. One runs along the Iranian side and is the only route approved by Tehran. The other lies farther south, near Oman's coast and potentially mined waters.During the relatively calmer period between June 17 and July 7, around nine ships a day used the Iranian route, and eight used the Omani route. Others travelled through unidentified routes or the former International Maritime Organization corridor. After hostilities resumed on July 8, however, the share of unidentified or "dark" crossings surged to two-thirds.<h2>How much has traffic through Hormuz fallen?</h2>The change in tracking visibility comes alongside a huge decline in overall shipping. Before the war, around one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports passed through the Strait of Hormuz. In February, an average of 95 commodity carriers crossed the strait each day. After Iran closed the waterway on March 1, it fell to around 10 per day.A June agreement briefly pushed the average up to 36 daily transits. That creates uncertainty for ship operators, insurers, governments and maritime authorities, especially in waters where Iran has warned of possible mines and where commercial vessels have already come under attack.

'If Iran overplays its hand': US won't rule out 'kinetic strikes' on Tehran, War Secretary Hegseth warns

Iran has issued a stark warning to countries considering joining the United States’ campaign of economic pressure against Tehran, saying nations that participate in the “economic war” will be considered enemies. The warning was issued by Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.

Rezaei specifically warned neighbouring countries against cooperating with Washington’s efforts to isolate the Iranian economy. He said Iran could retaliate against countries that assist the U.S. campaign and target their interests.

The warning comes after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a major new economic campaign against Iran, with Washington preparing additional sanctions aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran.

From there, the oil can travel north through Egypt's SUMED pipeline to Sidi Kerir on the Mediterranean coast, allowing Saudi crude to reach international markets without relying entirely on vulnerable maritime routes.

The alternative route has gained importance after Yemen's Houthi forces announced a blockade targeting vessels loaded at Yanbu.

Iran has warned neighbouring countries against joining what Tehran describes as a US economic war, threatening action against countries that participate in Washington's campaign to isolate the Iranian economy.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei reportedly issued the warning on state television, saying countries that impose economic restrictions on Iran would be considered enemies.

He warned that Tehran would first seek negotiations with such countries and urge them to distance themselves from Washington. However, he said Iran could target the interests of countries that refuse to change course.

Rezaei also said Iran had so far focused its attacks on US military bases rather than American economic interests. But he warned that further US sanctions could lead Iran to target American oil and economic companies in the region and elsewhere.

US President Donald Trump has meanwhile threatened severe economic consequences for countries providing what he described as a lifeline to Iran.

Iran Warns US Allies Over Sanctions As Hormuz Tensions And Regional Crisis Escalate

Iran's missile campaign is putting growing pressure on US military operations across West Asia, while Washington weighs its next move and President Donald Trump turns increasingly toward economic pressure and sanctions.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has become a central focus of the conflict, with questions emerging over resupply, deployment pressures and the ability of US forces to sustain extended operations in the region.

The conflict has also placed major pressure on American logistics infrastructure. Following attacks on key regional facilities, US forces have reportedly had to rely on alternative supply routes, including facilities farther from the Gulf.

Iranian missile attacks have forced US commanders to protect military bases, naval vessels and logistics hubs across the region, while American warships continue moving through strategically important waters.

Tehran has authorised a number of Iraqi oil tankers to transit the strategically important Strait of Hormuz following repeated requests from Baghdad, Iranian state media reported on Saturday (August 22). IRNA said the approvals were granted despite what it described as heightened military activity and insecurity in the waterway amid US actions. "Despite being subjected to the most severe military measures and insecurity created in the strait due to the hostile actions of the United States, Tehran has granted permission to a number of Iraqi oil tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz over the past six months," the IRNA news agency said.&nbsp;According to the report, Iraq made repeated requests through several diplomatic channels. One such appeal reportedly came during a visit to Iraq by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker and lead negotiator in discussions with the United States. NATO allies are discussing options to support freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, but the alliance is carefully stressing that this is not a formal NATO mission.

The discussions come as US President Donald Trump increases pressure on Iran and claims Washington has control over the Strait of Hormuz and the surrounding region.

NATO’s top military commander convened a video conference with interested allies to assess what individual countries could contribute to efforts aimed at protecting shipping through the strategic waterway. The alliance says it is facilitating coordination rather than taking military ownership of the operation.

Iran-US tensions are intensifying as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian calls for an end to the month-long war while insisting that Tehran is negotiating from a position of strength. US President Donald Trump, however, says Iran is interested in a deal but is not yet ready to make what he considers the “right deal.”

Trump has also claimed that the United States has total control of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important waterways. The comments come as Washington increases economic and maritime pressure on Tehran.

Iran has rejected the latest US pressure campaign and warned that further threats could trigger a strong military response. Iranian officials say Tehran remains prepared to defend its strategic waterways and interests across the region.

Meanwhile, the United States is expected to announce new sanctions targeting Iran, while discussions involving Iran and Oman continue over possible conditions for resuming talks, including security and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran-US War: Tehran Calls For End To Month-Long Conflict |Trump Says Iran Not Ready For “Right Deal”

Donald Trump returned to the White House promising to cut government waste, reduce federal spending and bring down America’s deficit. But more than a year into his second term, the US fiscal picture is facing growing pressure, with total national debt surpassing $40 trillion.

The administration launched the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with an ambitious goal of identifying waste and generating major savings. However, reported savings fell far short of the initial targets, while overall government spending remained high.

Trump’s major tax-and-spending package also created a difficult fiscal trade-off. While the administration argued that lower taxes would boost investment and economic growth, reduced tax revenue can add pressure to the deficit unless spending falls sufficiently.

Tariffs were another key part of Trump’s strategy, with the administration presenting them as both a trade tool and a potential source of revenue. However, tariff revenues have faced volatility while also raising concerns about inflation and higher costs for businesses and consumers.

Bandar Abbas and Strait of Hormuz: Inside strategic hub at the center of US-Iran escalation

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced what he called the “most crushing economic operation ever” against Iran, warning of severe consequences for any country helping Tehran economically. The move comes amid continuing tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, where Trump insists shipping is moving and “lots of boats” are crossing despite ongoing disputes over access and security in the vital waterway. The latest escalation signals a shift from military pressure to economic warfare.

US-Iran war: Trump's Iran sanctions face a global trade challenge

The West Asia conflict is approaching its sixth month with no clear diplomatic or military exit in sight as US President Donald Trump dramatically escalates pressure on Iran. Trump has announced what he described as an unprecedented economic warfare and isolation campaign against Iran, warning that countries continuing to do business with Tehran could face “tremendous punishment.”

The latest escalation comes amid a growing dispute over the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes. Trump says the waterway remains open and that numerous vessels are passing through, while Iranian officials maintain that the strait remains closed until Washington meets Tehran’s conditions.

Iran has demanded an end to the blockade of its ports, the lifting of oil sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets. Meanwhile, US-Iran negotiations remain uncertain, with Trump saying talks could resume at some point but reiterating that Iran must not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.

Trump declares Strait of Hormuz ‘new US territory’; Iran mocks ‘delusion’, vows to keep waterway closed

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most critical energy chokepoints in the world, but new developments suggest oil traffic through the waterway may be more active than previously believed. As global markets closely monitor shipping activity, uncertainty surrounding security, trade flows, and geopolitical tensions continues to influence oil prices.

Any disruption in Hormuz can have far-reaching consequences for energy-importing nations and global inflation. This report examines the latest signals from the Gulf, what they mean for oil markets, and why the Strait of Hormuz remains the biggest unknown for global energy traders.

Hormuz flows: Oil market’s biggest unknown

Oil prices rose sharply on Monday (Aug 17) after US President Donald Trump ruled out extending an interim ceasefire arrangement with Iran, deepening uncertainty over the conflict and the future of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.Brent crude, the international benchmark, settled at $90.87 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate rose to $84.50. The gains reflected renewed concern that stalled diplomacy could prolong disruptions to global energy supplies.President Trump said Monday that he did not want to extend the memorandum of understanding reached with Iran in June. The agreement had been intended to create a path toward a broader settlement, but negotiations have struggled over several issues, including Iran’s nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz.Iran has also hardened its position. A senior Iranian official warned that Tehran could shift toward a more offensive military posture if diplomatic efforts fail. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uk-firm-joins-rescue-race-as-oil-spill-from-russian-shadow-fleet-tanker-spreads-along-oman-s-coast-1786690658895">'Extremely challenging situation': UK firm joins rescue race as oil spill from Russian shadow fleet tanker spreads along Oman's coast</a><h2>Why Hormuz matters</h2>The Strait of Hormuz remains the most important factor for oil markets.
