US President Donald Trump has said the war with Iran will come to an end but warned that the outcome could depend on whether Tehran chooses what he described as the "nice way" or the "not-so-nice way". Speaking at Sparrows Point in Maryland on Tuesday (Oct 6), Trump once again claimed Iran's military had been severely weakened and said the US was in a strong position as the conflict continues. "We're doing extremely well in the Islamic Republic of Iran, very well. They have no military. It's shot; the whole place is shot," Trump said. He described Iran as the former "bully of the Middle East" and said Washington now needed to "finish up". "It's only a question of which way do we want to do it, the nice way or the not-so-nice way? The naval blockade is among the oldest instruments of statecraft. Long before air power, missiles and cyber warfare altered the character of conflict, command of the sea offered a means of weakening an adversary without having to defeat its armies on the battlefield. &nbsp;Britain’s naval blockade of Napoleonic France, the Union blockade of the Confederacy during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Britain’s blockade of Germany during the First World War and America’s campaign against Japanese shipping during the Second World War demonstrated the economic power that could flow from control of the seas.&nbsp;&nbsp;The events unfolding around the Strait of Hormuz may now be adding a distinctly twenty-first-century chapter to that history.&nbsp;What is striking about the present disruption is not simply its scale, but its asymmetry. Iran’s ability to export oil has been severely constrained, while Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other Gulf producers have increasingly sought alternative means of moving their energy to international markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;The question, therefore, is larger than whether one of the world’s great waterways can be disrupted. Are we witnessing the emergence of a new form of naval blockade?&nbsp;&nbsp;The Red Sea had already offered an unsettling preview. &nbsp;Since November 2023, Houthi attacks on commercial shipping have disrupted one of the principal arteries linking Asia and Europe. Ships have been diverted around the Cape of Good Hope, adding distance, time and expense to journeys that once passed routinely through the Red Sea and Suez Canal.&nbsp;&nbsp;The striking feature of the Red Sea crisis is that a non-state actor, armed with comparatively inexpensive missiles and drones, has been able to impose costs on a global trading system vastly larger than itself.&nbsp;Cuba offers another, very different illustration of the changing character of maritime economic pressure. The United States has combined sanctions and restrictions on the supply of fuel with maritime enforcement, making it increasingly difficult for Cuba to obtain the oil on which its economy depends. The objective is not a traditional wartime siege of Cuba’s coastline, but the restriction of the economic routes on which the country depends.&nbsp;&nbsp;Hormuz presents yet another proposition. &nbsp;Here, the confrontation is between the United States and Iran, involving naval and missile capabilities on both sides and one of the world’s most important energy routes. Yet all three episodes point to a reality that the digital age can easily obscure: geography still has the last word over commerce.&nbsp;History provides several reminders of this.&nbsp;&nbsp;During the American Civil War, the Union blockade sought to cut the Confederacy off from overseas trade, preventing it from exporting cotton and importing arms, ammunition and other supplies. The blockade was never watertight, but as the Union Navy expanded and tightened its control of the Southern coastline, the Confederacy’s external trade became increasingly difficult to sustain. Its importance lay not in winning the war by itself, but in the cumulative pressure it placed on an economy already under severe strain.&nbsp;&nbsp;Britain’s blockade of Germany during the First World War demonstrated the same principle on a much larger scale, restricting access to food and raw materials. In the Second World War, the American submarine campaign against Japan progressively destroyed its merchant fleet and severely restricted access to oil and other vital resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;The circumstances were different. The underlying vulnerability was not. &nbsp;Global commerce ultimately has to pass through physical geography.&nbsp;Money can cross borders electronically. Oil cannot. A tanker has to leave a port, cross a sea and reach a destination. At certain points on the map, there are few substitutes for the route that geography has provided.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Strait of Hormuz is one of those places. &nbsp;Before the present crisis, roughly a fifth of global oil and gas supplies passed through the Strait. Its importance therefore extends well beyond the immediate confrontation between Iran and the United States.&nbsp;&nbsp;Yet Hormuz also illustrates how much the nature of economic warfare has changed. Iran is particularly exposed because maritime energy exports are central to its access to foreign revenue. Years of sanctions reduced Iranian exports but did not eliminate them. Alternative buyers, intermediaries and shadow shipping networks allowed Iranian oil to continue finding its way to international markets.&nbsp;&nbsp;A physical maritime interdiction is different. It intervenes at the point where the commodity has to move. &nbsp;But the disruption has not fallen equally on every producer. Saudi Arabia has its East-West pipeline and access to the Red Sea. The UAE has alternative export infrastructure. Other Gulf producers have been exploring different logistical arrangements, including ship-to-ship transfers. &nbsp;This is where the current episode becomes particularly significant.&nbsp;&nbsp;A modern blockade can be selective. &nbsp;Rather than sealing an entire region off from the outside world, it can place exceptional pressure on one adversary while allowing other economies to reroute their trade and keep functioning. That possibility is a product of the twenty-first century.&nbsp;&nbsp;Satellites and advanced intelligence systems can track vessels over vast distances. Aircraft, drones, submarines and precision weapons give naval powers an ability to monitor and influence maritime traffic that earlier generations could scarcely have imagined. Financial restrictions, insurance costs and control over maritime services can reinforce military pressure.&nbsp;&nbsp;At the same time, alternative pipelines, ports and shipping arrangements give other countries ways around the obstruction. The result can be a form of economic warfare that is neither the total isolation sought by the great blockades of the past nor simply the disruption of individual ships. It is something more discriminating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Red Sea demonstrates how relatively inexpensive weapons can unsettle an enormously valuable trading route. Cuba illustrates how sanctions and maritime enforcement can restrict the supply of a vital commodity without a conventional wartime siege. Hormuz demonstrates the other side of the equation: how naval power can exploit a geographical chokepoint while neighbouring economies attempt to preserve their own access to world markets. That distinction may prove important beyond the current conflict.&nbsp;&nbsp;For much of the twentieth century, economic warfare increasingly relied on sanctions and financial pressure. These could punish an adversary without physically stopping the movement of goods. The experience around Hormuz suggests that physical geography still offers a different kind of leverage.&nbsp;&nbsp;A barrel of oil may be sold in a global market, but it cannot reach that market without being transported. Control the route and the economics of the transaction can change immediately. This is also why the consequences extend beyond Iran. Any sustained disruption around Hormuz affects oil prices, shipping costs, insurance premiums and the availability of refined products. Even when alternative routes exist, they tend to be more expensive and less efficient. The paradox is that the same infrastructure that allows other Gulf producers to adapt can also reduce the wider economic impact of the blockade. That may be what distinguishes the present situation from the great blockades of the past. The objective need not be to bring the entire regional economy to its knees. It can be to deny one particular economy the ability to use the sea while allowing much of the surrounding system to continue operating. There is, however, a danger in declaring the historical verdict too soon.&nbsp;&nbsp;The confrontation is still unfolding. The effectiveness of any blockade ultimately depends on whether alternative routes can be sustained, whether military pressure can be maintained and whether diplomacy changes the course of events.&nbsp;&nbsp;History is written with hindsight. A measure that appears decisive in the middle of a conflict can look very different once its wider consequences become clear. But if the present pattern endures, Hormuz may eventually occupy an important place in the history of naval power.&nbsp;&nbsp;The great blockades of the past sought, in different ways, to isolate an adversary from the outside world. What may be emerging today is a more discriminating form of maritime economic warfare: the ability to impose extraordinary pressure on one country’s trade while much of the surrounding economic system continues to function. That would represent a significant evolution in the use of sea power. It would also remind us of something the digital age sometimes encourages us to forget. However sophisticated the global economy becomes, it remains dependent on a handful of physical passages through which ships must travel.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Red Sea has shown how vulnerable such passages can be. Hormuz may now be showing how powerful control of them can become. &nbsp;If the present pattern endures, historians may indeed regard this episode as one for the history books — not because the naval blockade has returned in its old form, but because it may have acquired a new one. The precision blockade: using technology, naval power and geography to exert extraordinary pressure on one economy without necessarily bringing the wider trading system to a halt.&nbsp;

The precision blockade: What Strait of Hormuz tells us about naval power

Two oil tankers were struck by unidentified projectiles in and around the Strait of Hormuz on Friday (Oct 2), a British maritime agency said. The incidents add to the threats facing shipping in the waterway. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said the first vessel suffered a small fire and a blackout on board. The fire was later extinguished. No casualties or environmental impact were reported. The tanker was leaving the strait and resumed its journey. UKMTO did not say where the ship had come from or where it was headed.&nbsp;Hours later, a second crude oil tanker reported being hit by an "unknown projectile" east of Oman. All crew members were safe, and there was no environmental damage, according to the agency. It said authorities were investigating both incidents.&nbsp; The Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of the West Asia war. Before the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February, about a fifth of the world's oil and LNG passed through the passage.&nbsp;Tehran has since been blocking commercial shipping, firing on vessels it accuses of unauthorised crossings. UKMTO did not say where the ship had come from or where it was headed. Hours later, a second crude oil tanker reported being hit by an "unknown projectile" east of Oman. All crew members were safe, and there was no environmental damage, according to the agency. It said authorities were investigating both incidents. The Strait of Hormuz remains at the heart of the West Asia war. Before the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran in late February, about a fifth of the world's oil and LNG passed through the passage. Tehran has since been blocking commercial shipping, firing on vessels it accuses of unauthorised crossings. Washington has responded with a counterblockade of Iranian ports, aimed at stopping Tehran from exporting its oil.

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest truce proposal aimed at restarting negotiations to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, with US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz saying Tehran demanded too many concessions before returning to the negotiating table. Over a month after the Iran-US MOU expired, tensions remain high in West Asia. While Trump threatened annihilation of Iran, Pezeshkian stressed that Tehran won't surrender. Although Iran has now proposed a 7-day plan to end the war, it is also flexing its strength. Take a look at these visuals. As part of a nationwide mobilisation campaign, thousands of Iranians took part in a mass drill in south-eastern Iran's Kerman province. Crowds were seen carrying the national flag and a huge poster of Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. Also, a rally called 'Sacrifice for Iran' was held in Tehran. According to Iranian authorities, 40,000 motorcyclists took part in this rally from Imam Hossein Square to Azadi Square. On the diplomatic front too, Iran has been making a concerted attempt. For the first time since June, the US and Iran engaged in lengthy talks, mediated by Qatar. According to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tehran was willing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the US meets certain conditions. He added that these conditions were outlined in the MOU signed by Trump. According to reports, the proposal entails the US lifting sanctions on Iran's oil exports, ending the war on all fronts, including Lebanon and releasing some of Iran's frozen assets. In return, Iran has reportedly agreed to resume talks on multiple issues including its nuclear programme. Also Read: Trump hails ‘very positive’ US-China talks as Xi hints at more meetings this year Now, the seriousness of this endeavour is evident from the fact that Araghchi is staying back in New York over the weekend in anticipation of an American response. At a time when Xi Jinping is on a state visit to the US, Iran's Foreign Minister revealed that China had agreed to its proposal. Now, Araghchi also added that he would like the deal to go through before the midterm polls. This is seen as an off-ramp for Trump, as Republicans are facing a tough challenge in the midterm polls due to rising energy prices, triggered by the West Asia war. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian placed the onus on ending the war squarely on America. He also vowed to respond strongly to any aggression and resist US pressure until the very end. Now, even as Pakistan and China have pressed Iran to rein in Houthis, which have mounted a fresh offensive against Saudi Arabia, Pezeshkian sought to distance Tehran from the group's actions. Amid Iran's latest proposal, a key question arises. Will either Washington or Tehran be willing to compromise without extracting something tangible in return? While the US has been applying an economic squeeze on Iran, Tehran has a stranglehold over the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a global energy crisis.

Iran has proposed a seven-day plan to the United States that would halt hostilities, reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and pave the way for comprehensive talks over Tehran’s nuclear program. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the proposal on Thursday during a press briefing on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Araghchi said the plan had been delivered to Washington through intermediaries and closely follows commitments outlined in a memorandum of understanding reached between Iran and the United States in June before the agreement unraveled.&nbsp; He said Tehran was prepared to begin implementing the proposal as soon as Washington accepted its conditions. “We have introduced a plan to the United States through the intermediators that if certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz would be open on the end of the seventh day and talks would restart,” Araghchi said. Araghchi also said it would be better, if an agreement could be reached before the US midterm elections.&nbsp;A US official familiar with the discussions said Washington was engaged in positive and constructive talks through intermediaries but was not prepared to rush into an agreement. The proposal came as US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian delivered sharply contrasting speeches at the UN. Trump threatened Iran with ‘annihilation’ if Tehran failed to reach a deal, while Pezeshkian rejected pressure from Washington and said Iran would not be bullied.<h2>Iran’s conditions for reopening Hormuz</h2>Under the conditions outlined by Araghchi, all hostilities would stop during the seven-day period, including fighting in Lebanon.Tehran is also seeking the release of frozen Iranian assets, estimated at more than $12 billion, a waiver of sanctions on Iranian oil and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran. On the seventh day, the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened.&nbsp; After that, Araghchi said, comprehensive negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program would begin immediately. The Strait of Hormuz has become a central issue in the diplomatic efforts because of its importance to global energy and shipping. Recent Iranian proposals have similarly tied reopening the waterway to US steps to ease military and economic pressure. Trump has repeatedly said his principal objective is to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and that he would pursue that goal either through negotiations or further military action.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/we-do-not-wish-to-continue-it-s-america-that-must-choose-iran-president-pezeshkian-calls-on-us-to-end-war-1790298430033">'We do not wish to continue. Araghchi described the discussions as ‘productive’ and said the exchange of messages was continuing. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismaeil Baghaei said additional mediated meetings could take place in the coming days.<h2>Iran’s economy under pressure</h2>The diplomatic effort comes as Iran's economy faces severe pressure. Inflation has pushed up the cost of basic food items, while shortages of medicines and disruptions to trade have added to the strain on ordinary Iranians. Analysts have said Trump faces competing considerations over whether to reach an agreement before the US midterm elections or maintain economic pressure on Tehran in an effort to extract further concessions. The proposed seven-day roadmap now places the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and nuclear negotiations at the center of the latest US-Iran diplomatic effort.

Arab states in the Gulf called off a scheduled meeting with Iran today to discuss potential routes in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghei said that the meeting was cancelled at the request of Riyadh. Meanwhile, Yemen's Houthi rebels made remarkable progress along the Red Sea Coast last week. They also launched an attack on Saudi Arabia on Monday.“The report that Saudi Arabia requested that the meeting not be held for now is correct,” said Baghei, according to Iran's state media IRNA. The conflict in Yemen has intensified after Houthi rebels launched a drone-and-missile attack on a military base in southern Saudi Arabia. The strike reportedly targeted a weapons depot, while Saudi Civil Defence said a mosque in Jazan was also hit. In response, Yemeni government forces carried out multiple air strikes against Houthi positions. The latest escalation underscores growing security concerns along the Saudi-Yemen border and raises fears of a wider regional confrontation.

Saudi Arabia has shut down its critical East-West oil pipeline after it came under repeated drone attacks launched from Iraq. The pipeline, which normally pumps up to 7 million barrels a day to the Red Sea coast, was built decades ago specifically to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, but now even that backup route isn't safe. Riyadh says it won't retaliate for now, following a request from Iraq's PM, but has vowed to protect its 'sovereignty, security and critical facilities.'

IRAN-US WAR: Iran has issued a fresh warning to the United States, with Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf saying Tehran will no longer limit itself to “proportionate” responses. He warned that any future attack on Iranian interests or security would trigger a “faster, heavier and more painful” response.

The warning comes amid a sharp escalation around the Strait of Hormuz, with the US and Iran exchanging attacks at sea. The United States has struck three Iranian oil tankers, while Iran has claimed attacks against US-linked vessels and American warships. Some Iranian claims about damage to US vessels have been disputed by Washington.

The IRGC has also claimed that Iranian forces fired missiles at a US aircraft carrier and destroyer. The claims come as Washington continues its naval and economic pressure campaign against Tehran.

IRAN-US WAR | Iran Warns US Of ‘Faster, Heavier, More Painful’ Response As Hormuz Tensions Escalate

US-IRAN WAR: The U.S. military says it has struck three Iranian oil tankers after Iranian missiles targeted two U.S. Navy warships in regional waters.

According to U.S. Central Command, an American aircraft carrier and guided-missile destroyer evaded multiple Iranian attacks, with no U.S. personnel injured. CENTCOM said two Iranian oil carriers were permanently disabled while a third unladen tanker was destroyed.

The U.S. military said the tankers were part of a shadow network allegedly helping finance Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and regional armed proxies. The strikes reportedly took place near Kharg Island, Jask and the Gulf of Oman.

The latest strikes mark another major escalation in the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, with tensions rising around Iran’s oil exports and the strategically vital Gulf region.

South Korea plans for military deployment in Strait of Hormuz amid US pressure

US President Donald Trump has backed Syria’s proposal to emerge as an alternative transit corridor to the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing US-Iran war, calling the idea “GREAT!” Trump’s response came after a recent media report highlighted Syria’s efforts to position itself as a new overland route for the movement of oil and other goods, potentially reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. The development comes as tensions surrounding the key maritime chokepoint continue to escalate. The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, and the ongoing conflict between Washington and Tehran has intensified concerns over the security and continuity of maritime shipments through the waterway.<h2>Syria’s overland route</h2>According to a report by The Washington Post, Syria’s push began in April with a trial run involving trucks transporting supplies between refineries in southern Iraq and the Syrian port of Baniyas on the Mediterranean coast. The overland route gained momentum following the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which triggered a conflict that has now entered its sixth month. As the war intensified, Tehran tightened its control over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.&nbsp;Syria, under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, is now seeking to use its Mediterranean coastline and links to European markets to establish itself as an alternative route for energy and commercial shipments. The proposal would effectively position Baniyas as a gateway connecting Iraq’s oil-producing regions with Mediterranean shipping routes and, ultimately, European markets.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/nobel-laureate-machado-says-venezuela-s-illegitimate-regime-has-no-right-to-strike-us-oil-deal-1788463885343">Nobel laureate Machado says Venezuela’s ‘illegitimate’ regime has no right to strike US oil deal</a>

<h2>Pipeline plans gain momentum</h2>The Syrian proposal is not limited to trucking. The Trump administration has also endorsed a Chevron-led pipeline project aimed at creating a major alternative energy route between Iraq and Syria. The proposed pipeline would transport up to 2 million barrels of crude oil per day between Basra in Iraq and Baniyas on Syria’s Mediterranean coast. The planned infrastructure, however, will not be available immediately. The project is expected to take at least two and a half years to complete.&nbsp; With an estimated cost of $5.7 billion and a length of around 1,000 miles, the pipeline would represent a major investment in regional energy infrastructure. While the proposed route would not have the capacity to completely replace tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, it could provide another option for moving crude and diversify energy supply routes.<h2>Why the Strait of Hormuz matters</h2>The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical artery for global energy markets, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Any prolonged disruption to the waterway could have significant consequences for oil supplies, shipping costs and global energy prices. Against that backdrop, Syria’s push to establish an alternative corridor has attracted interest from foreign governments and major energy companies.&nbsp; If the proposed pipeline and associated infrastructure are completed, Baniyas could gain greater importance as a Mediterranean energy hub, giving Iraq an additional export route and potentially reducing the region’s reliance on maritime traffic through Hormuz. For Washington, the project could also support a broader effort to diversify energy transit routes amid heightened tensions with Tehran.

'This is great': Trump hails Syria's push for alternative to Strait of Hormuz amid US-Iran war

For decades, the Strait of Hormuz has been geography’s trump card in the global energy market. Now, the Trump administration is betting that pipelines, ports and political realignment can dramatically weaken that advantage. The idea is audacious: instead of repeatedly fighting to keep Hormuz open, build enough alternative routes that closing it no longer holds the world economy hostage.US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has put an extraordinary timeline on that ambition. He says that within two years, the Strait could become “irrelevant”, predicting that 50 to 70 percent of energy currently moving through it could eventually travel through underground pipelines instead. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has similarly argued that Iran’s use of Hormuz as a strategic chokepoint has strengthened the case for permanently restructuring regional energy routes. And pieces of that alternative map already exist.Saudi Arabia’s East-West Pipeline, or Petroline, carries crude from Abqaiq across the kingdom to Yanbu on the Red Sea. Its capacity has risen to as much as seven million barrels per day, and Riyadh is considering adding another one to two million barrels of capacity. The UAE, meanwhile, has its own route carrying crude from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah, outside Hormuz, and is working to expand that capacity. But perhaps the most geopolitically significant piece of the puzzle runs through Iraq and Syria.Washington is backing plans for new or revived pipeline infrastructure capable of carrying Iraqi crude westwards towards Syria’s Mediterranean coast. A proposed Basra-to-Baniyas corridor could eventually transport around two million barrels per day, giving Iraqi oil a route to global markets without entering Hormuz. Syria, once economically isolated, is consequently pitching itself as a new bridge between Gulf energy producers and the Mediterranean. The strategy would amount to a dramatic rewiring of the Middle East’s energy architecture. Before the Iran war, roughly 15 million barrels of Persian Gulf oil passed through Hormuz every day. Projects now being developed or discussed could provide another 7.3 million barrels per day of bypass capacity by the end of 2028. Analysts estimate that could eventually allow around 60 percent of the Gulf's pre-war oil exports to avoid Hormuz when necessary.Yet making Hormuz less important is very different from making it obsolete.Pipelines cost billions, cross multiple borders and require years of construction. They also create fixed targets vulnerable to missiles, drones and sabotage. Saudi Arabia's Petroline itself was attacked by Houthi drones in 2019. And moving Saudi crude to Yanbu merely introduces another potential chokepoint for Asian-bound cargoes: Bab el-Mandeb, where Houthi attacks have already demonstrated the vulnerability of Red Sea shipping. Then there is LNG.Pipelines carrying crude cannot simply solve Qatar's dependence on maritime LNG exports. Before the war, roughly one-fifth of global LNG trade passed through Hormuz, making natural gas one of the biggest obstacles to any claim that the strait can truly become irrelevant. And therein lies the contradiction in Washington's messaging.President Donald Trump only this week floated renaming the waterway the “Trump Strait”, while declaring it under American control. Yet his own administration is simultaneously championing a future in which the same strait matters dramatically less. One message celebrates controlling Hormuz. The other seeks to escape it.The more realistic objective, therefore, may not be to kill the Strait of Hormuz but to kill its monopoly.Saudi Petroline, Fujairah, Baniyas and potentially new corridors through Turkey and Jordan could give Gulf producers something they have historically lacked: options. That would dilute Tehran's ability to turn geography into economic leverage and fundamentally alter the strategic balance of the Gulf. But there is no risk-free route out of the Middle East.Bypassing Hormuz could simply move the danger — from Iranian waters to vulnerable pipelines, from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, and from one geopolitical chokepoint to another.Washington may be trying to redraw the world's energy map.Geography, however, has not surrendered yet.
