A UK committee has suggested the expansion of AUKUS to include South Korea & Japan. What could this expansion mean for the Quad? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: UK Committee suggests including Japan & South Korea in the QUAD

Here, we bring you a quick round-up of all the latest news and top headlines from all across the globe: In earlier tests, Pyongyang demonstrated how it would utilise nuclear-capable missiles in a conflict with South Korea or the United States.

Pyongyang simulates 'tactical nuclear strike' on South Korea

North Korea fired at least two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Wednesday, South Korea's military said, hours after the US separately deployed B-1B bombers for allied air drills. The country later confirmed that the two short-range ballistic missiles it fired were part of a "tactical nuclear strike drill".

Japan's defence ministry also reported that at least one suspected ballistic missile was launched, while Japanese media reported that two missiles were fired and landed outside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

"Our military has strengthened surveillance and vigilance in preparation for additional provocations, and is maintaining full readiness through close cooperation between Korea and the United States," South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

The launch comes a day before South Korea and the US wrap up 11 days of combined military drills, which Pyongyang has denounced.

The B-1B bombers conducted separate air drills with warplanes from South Korea and Japan earlier on Wednesday.

North Korea's ballistic missiles are banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions that have imposed strict sanctions on the nuclear-armed country.

The US is concerned that arms negotiations between Russia and North Korea are actively advancing, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby told a briefing on Wednesday, noting that any arms deal would violate sanctions.

North Korea fires short-range ballistic missiles amid joint US-South Korea drills

A joint Maritime infiltration training was conducted by the special command troops of South Korea and the US. About 100 US and South Korean soldiers were mobilized for the drills in South Korea's Coastal region. The joint exercises from August 21st to 31st are designed to enhance responses to North Korea's nuclear and missile threats.

South Koreans are increasingly shunning marriage, shows a new government report.

As per the report released on Monday (August 28) only one-third of South Koreans had a positive perception about marriage. The trend, which has drastically accelerated over the past decade, spells demographic trouble for the already ageing nation.

Marriage, a thing of past?

The report by Statistics Korea found that only 36.4 per cent of South Koreans, between the ages of 19 and 34, wanted to get married. This is down from 56.5 per cent in 2012.

As per the report, the reason behind these plummeting numbers includes economic concerns over the rising costs of living and unaffordable housing.

Also read | South Korean cities play cupid, host blind-dating events to up fertility rate

Respondents who were polled last year also said that one reason they are not getting married is because they do not have enough money for marriage. Some reported feeling that marriage is simply not necessary.

How the genders responded?

Surprisingly, among those who had a positive perception towards marriage, a majority were men, and only 28 per cent of women responded positively.

In South Korea, there is even a word for women who chose to forego marriage, and remain single: "bihon".

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the reason more women are deciding to stay single could be because of their advancement in education and the workplace. This means that compared to earlier generations, the "opportunity cost of marriage" is higher for today's women.

Given the persistent gender stereotypes, getting married or having children might require women to make concessions concerning their careers or education, reports the OECD. This is especially true because of the challenges women face in returning to work after giving birth.

Child-free life

It's not just marriage, more and more people, as per the Statistics Korea report, are now dismissive towards childbirth. Since 2018, the number of those who choose to remain child-free is rising. More than half the people surveyed last year reportedly said they don't see the need to have a child.

The trend is a cause of concern for South Korea, where last year the fertility rate fell to a record low of 0.78. As per the OECD, 2.1 is the rate needed for a stable population, South Korea's fertility rate is the lowest in the world.

India's deputy NSA Misri, S. Korea FM prioritise critical technologies ahead of key talks

North Korea has told Japan that it plans to launch a satellite in the coming few days according to Japanese officials this would be Pyongyang's second trying to put a military spy satellite into orbit three months after the first effort failed. Japan's Coast Guard says that the North Korean authorities notified them about the plan to launch a satellite from the 24th of August till the end of August however, the notice does not specify what type of satellite it is.

Japan: North Korea planning second spy satellite launch

South Korea on Tuesday (August 22) called on North Korea to immediately drop its plan of launching a satellite saying that the launch would be an "illegal act" as it would require the use of banned ballistic projectile technology.

"North Korea's so-called 'satellite launch' is a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions... No matter what excuses North Korea tries to make, it cannot justify this illegal act," South Korea's Unification Ministry said in a statement.

Pyongyang, on Tuesday, told Japan's Coast Guard that it would launch a satellite between August 24 to August 31, which would fly over the Yellow Sea, East China Sea and the Pacific.

The announcement prompted Tokyo to muster ships and its PAC-3 projectile defence system in case it were to land in its territory.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also released a statement urging North Korea to call off the launch and said that his country was working with South Korea and the United States to gather more information.

Tokyo is taking "all possible measures to prepare for any unforeseen eventuality", Kishida said.

"A launch would be extremely regrettable," he told reporters.

Kim Jong Un plans satellite launch as US and South Korea hold drills

North Korea's satellite launch announcement comes after the United States and South Korea kicked off their major annual joint military drills on Monday (August 21), which are being done to counter rising threats from the nuclear-armed North.

Named as Ulchi Freedom Shield, the exercises are scheduled to run through August 31.

Pyongyang issued a stern denouncement of the rehearsals saying that it would take "overwhelming" action in response.

Pyongyang issued a stern denouncement of the rehearsals saying that it would take "overwhelming" action in response. South Korea urges Pyongyang to immediately drop plan of launching satellite

Ahead of the start of a major joint exercise between Seoul and Washington, North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un visited a navy unit and oversaw a strategic cruise missile test, state media agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Monday (August 21). The agency added that Kim inspected one of the fleets in the East Sea, more colloquially known as the Sea of Japan and watched, while the crew staged a drill launching "strategic cruise missiles". It wasn't divulged when the visit took place or what type of missile was launched. The images, however, showed him watching a soaring missile from the patrol ship from another place, not on the vessel. South Korea and the US kick off the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield drills on August 21 that will run through August 31 to act as a counterbalance against the growing threats from the nuclear-armed North. Pyongyang has not hidden its distaste for the exercise, saying it was "rehearsals for an invasion" and that it would take "overwhelming" action in response. "Our army must thoroughly secure overwhelming military power and solid readiness to handle any war at any time, so that the enemy does not dare to use force, and would be annihilated if it does," said Kim, according to state media reports. It was the first time that the three countries and their leaders met for a standalone summit where North Korea formed a major part of the talks. Pyongyang may have been irked by the fact that the three countries agreed to a multi-year plan of regular exercises in all domains. They also made a formal "commitment to consult" during crises, with Biden saying they would open a hotline. On Sunday (August 20), a Reuters report stated that hackers believed to be linked to a North Korean group that researchers call Kimsuky, had carried out hacking operations over the joint military exercise. This endeavour will provide valuable support to the Biden administration's efforts in managing threats from entities like North Korea.

The forthcoming Camp David meeting will also delve into discussions concerning the enhancement of trilateral defence exercises.

Furthermore, the three nations plan to put into practice their agreement to share real-time missile warning data regarding North Korea, a commitment made during a summit last November, within the current year.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida sending ritual offerings to the controversial Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on Tuesday irked China and South Korea as it has ties to Japan’s past imperialist aggression.

Earlier in the day, Kishida sent a "masakaki" offering instead of paying an in-person visit to the shrine as the nation marked the 78th anniversary of the end of World War II, Kyodo News Agency reported.

Instead of visiting Yasukuni, Kishida laid flowers at the nearby Chidorigafuchi National Cemetery.

Japan will “stick to our resolve to never repeat the tragedy of the war,” Kishida said at a solemn ceremony in a speech that was apparently similar to what he read last year, according to AP news agency.

But three former and current Cabinet ministers visited the shrine. They are Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, former environment minister Shinjiro Koizumi and former trade and industry minister Koichi Hagiuda.

Why is it controversial?

The reason why the shrine is controversial is because it enshrines the convicted war criminals among the 2.5 million war dead.

Responding to Kishida's tribute and the visit by other lawmakers to the shrine, the South Korean Foreign Ministry expressed "deep disappointment and regret" in its statement, saying that the shrine "glorifies Japan's past wars of aggression and enshrines war criminals."

It called on "responsible figures in Japan to face history squarely and to demonstrate humble reflection and genuine remorse for the past."

Japan’s colonisation of the Korean Peninsula during the 1910-1945 period has long strained ties between both countries.

But it has steadily been improving over the years, with South Korea even suggesting a solution to a long-standing dispute over wartime labour compensation earlier this year.

China's harsh remarks

China, too, expressed its dismay, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin saying the “negative move ... once again reflects Japan’s wrong attitude towards history.”

China has made “stern” complaints to Japan, Wang told reporters at a daily briefing.

China still harbours deep resentment against Japan over its aggression, particularly at the brutal outset of the 1937-1945 Second Sino-Japanese War that included the notorious Rape of Nanking.

US: Joe Biden to host summit in Camp David, invites Japan & South Korea for formal talks

People are anxious about Japan's impending release of treated nuclear Wastewater from the tsunami-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant. Hundreds of South Koreans in fact staged protests in Seoul to this. Holding placards gathered in the South Korean capital had protestors wearing raincoats and holding up signs that read 'We oppose the disposal of Fukushima's contaminated water' and 'No radioactive material is safe for the sea'.

South Korea: Stir against Fukushima wastewater release plan

Hundreds of thousands of activists in South Korea took to the streets in central Seoul on Saturday to stage a demonstration against Japan's decision to discharge treated radioactive water from the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear power plant into the ocean.

The march came after Japan's Asahi Shimbun daily, earlier this week, reported that Tokyo is planning to begin discharging the water into the ocean as early as late August, citing unidentified government sources.

"If it is discarded, radioactive substances contained in the contaminated water will eventually destroy the marine ecosystem," said Choi Kyoungsook of Korea Radiation Watch, an activist group that organised the protest.

"We are opposed... because we believe the sea is not just for the Japanese government, but for all of us and for mankind."

Demonstrators held up signboards saying "Keep It Inland" and "Protect the Pacific Ocean!" while singing songs and listening to rally organisers.

South Korean activists protest against Japan's plan to release treated Fukushima water into ocean

China said on Friday (August 11) that Chinese coast guard held joint drills with Russian and South Korean coast guards. An official statement from the Chinese side said that the drills took place between August 7 and August 10.

The Chinese coast guard said in the statement that maritime law enforcement from countries including Russia and South Korea took part in the annual North Pacific coast guard drills in eastern Chinese city Ningbo. The drills targetted drug trafficking at sea.

China has a number of maritime and territorial disputes in waters around it. It claims entirety of Taiwan and has not ruled out use of force to retake the self-governing island. With Japan, it has dispute over Senkaku/ Diaoyu islands. China also claims the entirety of South China Sea. It cites ancient references for its claim. In the matter of South China Sea, China has disputes with a number of countries.

Assertive Philippines

The Philippines often finds itself at odds with China with respect to claims in South China Sea. On Thursday (August 10), the Southeast Asian country said that it will send more supplies to a remote outpost on a reef in the disputed South China Sea. The supplies will be sent as early as next week. This development has come after Chinese boats disrupted a delivery

On last Saturday, a resupply mission could not unload all of its cargo because Chinese coast guard ships blocked its way and fired water cannon at the Philippine coast guard vessels and charter boats attempting to unload food, water and fuel on Second Thomas Shoal.

This flare-up has started a diplomatic row between Manila and Beijing. It also sparked international criticism of China.

A handful of marines are based on a World War II-vintage ship called the BRP Sierra Madre, which was deliberately grounded on the submerged reef in 1999 to check China's advance in the hotly contested waters. The tiny garrison depends on regular deliveries for their survival.

One of the charter boats that was carrying supplies was prevented from reaching the shoal. The other one was able to unload its cargo.

The next delivery would be "early next week hopefully, but definitely before the supply runs out. We're on the clock now," Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos, chief of the Western Command of the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Palawan island, told reporters.
