South Korea, Japan, and the United States conducted a joint aerial exercise near the Korean peninsula on Sunday (October 22) afternoon, the South Korean military said, marking the first such collaboration between the three countries.

South Korea holds first joint air drill with US and Japan

South Korea held a joint aerial exercise with Japan and the United States on Sunday (October 22) said South Korean military. The air drill has marked first such collaboration between the three countries. The drill was aimed at expanding the countries' response capabilities against threat posed by North Korea, said South Korean air force in a statement.

The drill involved a US B-52 bomber along with fighter jets of the three countries.

The US bomber landed at South Korean airbase on Tuesday following a flyover at country's largest defence exhibition. B-52 bombers fly at sub-sonic speed but can travel more than 8800 miles without any need of refuelling. The bomber can reach an altitude of 50,000 feet.

The South Korean Air Force said that the trilateral exercise took place south of the Korean peninsula where South Korea and Japan's Air Defence Identification Zones overlap.

North Korea considers all such exercises as rehearsals for an invasion against it and repeatedly warns of "overwhelming" action in response.

North Korea baulks at Washington's deployment of long-range military assets and in 2017 threatened to "shoot down" US strategic bombers even outside North Korean airspace.

The B-52 bomber's arrival came on the heels of a port call by USA's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. This elicited angry reactions from Pyongyang.

The bomber also landed ahead of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's two-day visit to Pyongyang, as the UN-sanctioned neighbours and historic allies tighten ties.

Leaders of Japan, South Korea and the United States agreed to carry out annual, multi-domain, trilateral exercises earlier this year. At the Camp David summit in August, the three countries also agreed to set up a hotline for crisis communication.

The aerial drills are the latest effort by the US and its allies in Asia to firm up ties in the face of tensions with North Korea and rising Chinese influence in the region.

South Korea holds air drills with Japan and US in first such collaboration

A team of scientists collected fish samples from the port town near Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant on Thursday (Oct 19) for the first time since the release of treated radioactive wastewater into the sea.

This comes as scientists from China, South Korea and Canada have sought to assess the impact of the plant’s recent release of treated radioactive water into the sea which began in August.

The move has since drawn criticism from Beijing and prompted the country to ban all imports of marine products from Tokyo over food safety fears.

About the samples collected

The marine samples were collected in the presence of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team while scientists from three countries observed the delivery fresh off the boat at Hisanohama port, about 50 kilometres south of the plant which was destroyed in 2011 following an earthquake and tsunami.

The IAEA team is in the midst of an eight-day visit, during which they also inspected the collection and processing of seawater and marine sediment near the plant. The UN nuclear watchdog has said that the samples will be sent to laboratories in each country for independent testing.

“The Japanese government has requested that we do this and one of the reasons they want us to do this is to try and strengthen confidence in the data that Japan is producing,” said Paul McGinnity, an IAEA marine radiology scientist overseeing the survey.

IAEA selected six species of fish – olive flounder, crimson sea bream, redwing searobin, Japanese jack mackerel, silver croaker and vermiculated puffer fish – because they are known to have higher levels of radioactivity than other species, said McGinnity, attributing this to the areas in which the fishes tend to move around in.

The fish will now be shipped to a Fisheries Agency laboratory in Chiba, near Tokyo where scientists from the UN nuclear watchdog will also examine them. “I can say that we don’t expect to see any change starting in the fish,” said the IAEA scientist.

However, he did note a small rise in levels of tritium, which cannot be removed from the Fukushima wastewater by the plant’s treatment system and may be detected in locations close to the discharge points, but otherwise, the levels of radioactivity are expected to be similar to those measured before the discharge last year.

Fukushima water release

On August 24, Fukushima Daiichi started releasing treated wastewater into the sea after more than a million metric tons of water, which is enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools, was contaminated from contact with fuel rods at the reactor following the 2011 disaster.

While the IAEA has reviewed the safety of the wastewater release, which will be done in instalments, and said it would have negligible impact on the environment, marine life and human health, not everyone was convinced, prompting hundreds of people in Japan as well as South Korea to take to the streets in protest back in August.

The penultimate day of the Asian Games was overshadowed by a controversial kabaddi final that was suspended for an hour on Saturday, as South Korea won a third men's football title in a row.

The curtain comes down Sunday on the biggest Asian Games in history, boasting 12,000 athletes, after two weeks of competition across 40 sports.

Saturday was the most action-packed of the fortnight, with gold medals up for grabs in 24 sports including football, cricket, badminton, kabaddi, hockey and breakdancing.

India have surpassed all expectations by breaching the century mark of medals for the first time.

It bodes well for the Paris Olympics, which are less than 10 months away.

In early action on a grey and soggy day in Hangzhou, India swept up two golds in archery and another in women's kabaddi.

But what should have been a day of celebration came with a large dollop of controversy.

The men's kabaddi final against Iran descended into chaos and was suspended, before India finally sealed the title.

Kabaddi is a tag-meets-rugby contact team sport rooted in Indian mythology and said to date back 5,000 years.

A captivating final was locked at 28-28 with just over a minute left when India went on a "raid" for points, with both teams claiming they should get the decision.

That sparked a prolonged video review, then a standoff and the suspension of the final, as numerous officials checked the footage and attempted to make a ruling.

The action in what was an eagerly anticipated showdown was put on hold as both teams at different points appeared to refuse to play and argued their case.

Order was eventually restored with the score at 31-29 in India's favour.

Iran reluctantly carried on but they were deflated and quickly slumped to a 33-29 defeat.

Iran coach Gholamreza Mazandarani pointed the finger at the officials and also accused the Indian team of putting pressure on the referees.

"This is very bad, very bad for kabaddi," he said of the fractious scenes.

India also sealed men's cricket gold in a similarly anti-climactic fashion.

They were declared winners of the final against Afghanistan under an Asian Games-specific rule where the higher-ranked team takes the honours if the match cannot be finished, in this case due to rain.

India reached the end of the day with 107 medals in total, 28 of those gold.

But they will finish a long way behind China in the final medals table. The hosts are well ahead of the rest with 382 medals, 200 of them gold.

Military exemption

In the men's football final, Paris Saint-Germain star Lee Kang-in helped South Korea win gold for the third time in a row -- and earn a military exemption.

South Korea recovered from going a goal down after only two minutes to beat Japan 2-1.

Cho Young-wook scored the winner in the second half in a competition featuring under-24 squads plus three overage players.

Nearly every able-bodied South Korean male is required to perform at least 18 months of service, but the government rewards Asian Games gold medals and Olympic medals of any colour with an exemption.

The first medals in Asian Games history were at stake in breakdancing, ahead of making another landmark debut at next year's Paris Games.

The history-makers were Japan's Shigeyuki Nakarai in winning the men's crown while Liu Qingyi of China triumphed in the women's category.

It also earned them each a spot in Paris.

"When I started breaking, nobody imagined it would be part of an Olympics," said Nakarai.

Badminton world number one An Se-young beat China's Chen Yufei over three gruelling games to win gold and add another title to her stunning breakout year.

"I couldn't be happier. It's taken me five years of preparation to be here," said An.

Asian Games: Kabaddi kerfuffle overshadows day as South Korea retain football crown

South Korean roller skater Jung Cheol-won endured an agonising heartbreak after he celebrated a tad too early before crossing the finish line. Leading the 3,000-metre relay race at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China on Monday (October 2), Jung eased up and raised his arms in the home stretch of the race, only to be pipped by Taiwan's Huang Yu-Lin and his outstretched leg on the line.

The 27-year-old South Korean was poised to finish the race in the first place but his momentary lapse in concentration not only caused his team to lose out on the gold medal but also meant that they would now have to mandatorily enrol in the country's military service.

“I made a rather big mistake,” Jung was quoted as saying by Reuters. “I didn’t come at full speed to the finish line. I let my guard down too early. I am very sorry.”

However, once in a while, there comes a reminder that celebrating too early, before crossing the finish line can have its consequences as well. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

South Korea detains 22 Chinese nationals on suspicion of illegal entry attempt

A South Korean man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for employing artificial intelligence (AI) to generate explicit images of minors.

This ruling marks a first-of-its-kind legal decision in South Korea and raises critical questions about the challenges courts worldwide face as technology advances, enabling the creation of abusive sexual content through new means, reported CNN.

The offender and his AI creations

The man, in his 40s, came under the scrutiny of the Busan District Court and the district's Public Prosecutor's Office.

In April, he developed approximately 360 AI-generated images with explicit content, a disturbing act that did not extend to distributing these images. Law enforcement subsequently confiscated the images.

Prosecutors in the case argued a crucial point: the scope of sexually exploitative material should encompass descriptions of sexual activities involving "virtual humans" rather than being restricted solely to the appearance of actual children.

This ruling acknowledges that AI-generated imagery can possess a "high level" of realism, making it indistinguishable from actual children and minors. In doing so, the prosecutor's office emphasised that AI technology has the capacity to generate highly realistic exploitative content.

The South Korean case is not an isolated incident. Just this month, Spanish authorities initiated an investigation following the manipulation of images of underage girls using AI, which aimed to remove their clothing and distribute these altered images. Tragically, in one instance, a boy attempted to extort one of the girls by using a manipulated, nude image of her, a shocking revelation made by the girl's mother to Canal Extremadura television channel.

South Korea’s constitutional court on Tuesday (Sep 26) ruled that the ban on sending propaganda leaflets to North Korea was unconstitutional. It struck down the law passed in 2020 by the then-president Moon Jae-in, who had sought better ties with Pyongyang.

Civic groups in Seoul and critics said that the law stifles freedom of expression, reported the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

South Korean court about the law

The law passed in 2020 led to a revised Development of Inter-Korean Relations Act which went into effect in March a year later. It prohibits the launching of anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border and subjects violators to up to three years in prison or $22,210 in fines.

The revision was made under the liberal administration of Moon Jae-in which said that launching such leaflets could provoke the North and risk the safety of border town residents.

Civic groups in South Korea, including Park Sang-hak who leads Fighters for a Free North Korea, filed a constitutional petition against the law on the day of its promulgation, reported Yonhap.

In a seven-to-two vote ruling, the court said banning the distribution of leaflets excessively limited freedom of speech.

The court’s decision to nullify the law takes effect immediately.

The ‘anti-Pyongyang leaflet’ debate

Over the years, groups run by North Korean defectors and other campaigners in South Korea have sent anti-Pyongyang leaflets into the North, mostly using balloons or bottles on border rivers.

These messages, which are known to be coveted by North Koreans, are often printed on small plastic bags which also carry food and USB sticks containing South Korean news and dramas and are harshly critical of the North Korean leadership.

In the past, Pyongyang has reacted angrily to the practice and denounced it as an obstacle to better relations between the two countries.

North Korea had also reportedly shut down the communications links – inter-Korean military lines or liaison calls, established in 2018 – for nearly a year over the leaflets critical of Kim Jong Un’s regime.

Some residents in South Korean border towns have also criticised the action as stoking tension and putting their safety at risk.

South Korea court: Banning anti-North Korea propaganda leaflets ‘unconstitutional’

Her face is a deepfake. Her body belongs to a team of similar-sized actors. But she sings, reads the news, and sells luxury clothes on TV as AI humans go mainstream in South Korea.

Meet Zaein, one of South Korea's most active virtual humans, who was created by Pulse9, an artificial intelligence company that is working to bring corporate dreams of the perfect employee to life.

Pulse9 has created digital humans for some of South Korea's largest conglomerates, including Shinsegae, with research indicating the global market for such life-like creations could reach $527 billion by 2030.

In South Korea, AI humans have enrolled as students at universities, interned at major companies, and appear regularly on live television driving sellouts of products from food to luxury handbags.

But Pulse9 says this is only the beginning. They are "working on developing the technology to broaden AI human use", Park Ji-eun, the company's CEO, told AFP.

"Virtual humans are basically capable of carrying out much of what real people do," she said, adding that the current level of AI technology means humans are still needed -- for now.

The demand for AI humans in South Korea was initially driven by the K-pop industry, with the idea of a virtual idol -- not prone to scandals and able to work 24/7 -- proving popular with the country's notoriously hard-driving music agencies.

But now, Pulse9 is "expanding their roles in society to show that these virtual humans aren't just fantasy idols but can coexist with humans as colleagues and friends", Park said.

- K-pop face -

Zaein's face was created by a deep learning analysis -- an AI method that teaches computers to process complex data -- of the faces of K-pop stars over the last two decades.

Doe-eyed with delicate features, fair skin and a willowy figure, she is brought to life by overlaying the deepfake on a human actor.

More than 10 human actors, each with different talents -- from singing, dancing, acting, to reporting -- help animate Zaein, which is what makes this particular AI creation so "special", Park said.

On a Monday morning, AFP met with one of the actors as she was preparing to deliver a report as Zaein on a live morning news programme on South Korean broadcaster SBS.

"I think it can be a good practice for people who want to become celebrities and that's what appealed to me," said the actor, who could not be named due to company policy.

A representative for Pulse9 said the identities of all human actors are concealed and their real faces not shown.

Despite the strict measures to keep their profiles hidden, the actor said playing as a virtual human opened new doors.

"Typically, a lot of people in their teens and young people become K-pop idols and I'm way past that age, but it's nice to be able to take on that challenge," the actor, who is in her 30s, told AFP.

"I'd love to try acting as a man if I can manage my voice well, and maybe a foreigner -- something that I can't become in real life."

- 'Real and fake' -

Creating artificial humans will continue to require real people "until a really strong AI is created in future which will be able to process everything by itself", Park said.

The potential -- and potential perils -- of AI have exploded into the public consciousness in recent months, since ChatGPT burst onto the scene at the end of last year.

Experts around the world, including AI pioneers, have spoken out about its dangers, and several countries are seeking regulation of the powerful but high-risk invention.

But Park is not concerned. Her company is working on new virtual idols, virtual influencers, and virtual sales agents to take over customer-facing tasks for South Korean conglomerates, which are increasingly struggling with recruitment in the low-birthrate country.

South Korea -- and the world -- needs better, clearer regulations on what AI can do, she said, adding that when done properly, the technology can add to "the richness of life".

The trouble however, is that a deepfake can "make it impossible to tell what is real and fake", Kim Myuhng-joo, a professor of information security at Seoul Women's University, told AFP.

"It's an egregious tool when used to harm others or putting people in trouble. That's why it's becoming a problem," he added.

From K-pop to sales girls: AI goes mainstream in South Korea

South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asian Games, on Saturday (September 23), in the city of Hangzhou, as per Yonhap news agency reports.

Xi after his meeting with Han said that he will seriously consider visiting South Korea, as a part of efforts to back peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.

The commitment to cooperation between the two countries came ahead of trilateral talks scheduled in Seoul on Tuesday (September 26) involving senior officials from China, Japan and South Korea. The talks are aimed at paving the way for the first summit between the three countries in four years.

The meeting will bring South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Byung-won; Takehiro Funakoshi, Japan's senior deputy foreign minister; and Nong Rong, China's assistant minister of foreign affairs all together.

"We will make efforts to ensure that the summit can be held promptly, starting with the high-level meeting next week and proceeding through the foreign ministerial conference," Han was quoted by First Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin as saying.

The South Korean prime minister asked the Chinese president for his country's backing in hosting the 2030 World Expo in the city of Busan, and reportedly Xi said that Beijing would "seriously consider" Seoul's request.

This meeting by both countries also took place against the backdrop of a recent summit between North Korean leader Kim Jon Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Han explained our side's bold ideas and recent developments related to the Korean Peninsula situation, and urged China to continue playing a constructive role," Chang said.

This also marks the very first visit by a South Korean Prime Minister to China in over 4 years.

"I hope to cultivate a healthy and mature relationship between South Korea and China, grounded in mutual respect, mutual benefit and common interests," Han was quoted by the Prime Minister's Office as saying.

He further said that the talks between Seoul and Beijing indicated towards their commitment to advancing their relations to the next level amidst the threats by North Korea.

"Both countries are not only grappling with heightened regional tensions due to North Korea's persistent provocations but also facing global challenges, such as economic uncertainty and disruptions in supply chains," Han said.

South Korean police are investigating 17 US soldiers and five others after they were alleged to have illegally smuggled or used synthetic marijuana via military mail.

During the joint raids by the South Korean police and the US Army's Criminal Investigation Division at the homes of the 22 suspects, more than four kilogrammes of "mixed liquids" used for vaping and 77g (2.7oz) of synthetic cannabis, in addition to $12,850 in cash was found, per a BBC report.

Video released by the police showed the 27 electronic cigarette devices and rolls of $50 and $100 bills, as well as numerous cell phones and colourful cylindrical tubes that look similar to vape pens, lying on the table.

The joint raids were carried out at Camp Humphreys, south of Seoul – the largest US military installation outside of the US and Camp Casey, situated north of the capital city.

Two people - a South Korean and a Filipino had already been arrested for drug distribution allegations. Notably, a 24-year-old American soldier had smuggled 350 millilitres of liquid synthetic cannabis that was shipped from the US via military mail. He had handed the shipment to the Filipino man who then sold it to a South Korean distributor and other US soldiers.

See you all in 2025! BTS' Suga begins mandatory military service in South Korea

The South Korean government has passed laws to protect the rights of school teachers over abuse from the parents of students. According to a report by The Guardian early Friday (September 22), the laws were passed following weeks of protests sparked by a series of teacher suicides that are set to be linked to malicious complaints from parents.

In July, a 23-year-old primary school teacher was found dead at her school in Seoul. The cause of death was apparent suicide after the teacher reportedly expressed anxiety over complaints from parents. This case triggered protests from teachers and since then, other such cases have come to light.

On Thursday, the teacher rights restoration bills - four in number - were passed in the National Assembly. Passage of one of the bills means that teachers will no longer be automatically suspended if they are accused of child abuse. The report said that this bill prohibits school principals from downplaying or concealing activities that may have violated a teacher’s rights.

Appreciating the move, the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union described the passage of the bills as a first step forward toward normalising public education and guaranteeing teacher authority. However, the Union cautioned that achieving a full might be challenging without sufficient manpower, and budget support among other factors.

The report also said that last month, the government unveiled a set of guidelines to enhance teachers’ rights which also included measures to address abusive complaints.

Teachers have been protesting nationwide for nine weeks, demanding more rights. They say that they are frequently harassed by parents who often maliciously report them for child abuse, to see them removed from their jobs.

Aome teachers were even reported for restraining a violent child, said reports.

The teachers accused parents of exploiting a child welfare law, passed in 2014, according to which teachers accused of child abuse are automatically suspended.

South Korea passes laws to protect school teachers' rights after protests over abuse from parents

The adoption and its absolute relation to the identity of an individual is not just the theme of hit Korean film 'Return to Seoul'. South Korea stands as the world's leading source of intercountry adoptees, surpassing all nations in foreign adoptions.

In response to widespread allegations of corruption and misconduct, South Korea initiated its first official government investigation into its adoption industry last year. Following the launch of this investigation, while its results are yet to be out, a number of adoptees have opened up about the struggles to configure their own identities.

Since the conclusion of the Korean War in 1953, approximately 200,000 children have been sent abroad, mainly to the United States and Europe.

Despite government efforts to promote domestic adoptions, South Korean families have traditionally been hesitant to adopt. In the post-Korean War decades, when the country faced poverty, limited medical services, and meagre welfare budgets, the imperative was to find overseas adoptive homes for orphaned, abandoned, or disabled children.

Problems with South Korea's adoption industry

While many children reportedly found caring homes abroad, South Korea's rapid promotion of overseas adoptions inadvertently led to deep-rooted industry issues, including profit-driven adoption firms falsifying or concealing documents to increase the pool of adoptable children.

Unwed mothers often felt coerced into abandoning their infants, sometimes before birth, with limited follow-up on children's well-being in their new homes, reports in the New York Times and NPR point out.

The roots of South Korea's "baby export" business lie in xenophobia and prejudice, with biracial children born to American soldiers and Korean women facing a grim choice: overseas adoption or life in poverty and shame.

Hasn't there been a call for reforms?

Yes, reforms have occurred in South Korea to prevent malpractices in its adoption industry.

In recent decades, South Korea has taken steps to reform adoption practices, offering more support to single mothers and requiring court approval for overseas adoptions. Nonetheless, numerous accusations from earlier years remained uninvestigated.

The push for accountability has been led by returning adoptees partnering with a new generation of advocates and politicians willing to confront this once-taboo legacy.

A number of adoptee initiatives and guest houses have sprung up in Seoul that support the Korean children adopted abroad and the ones who visit the country of their origin.

Despite economic improvements, South Korea continued to promote adoption, culminating in liberalised intercountry adoptions in the 1980s, ostensibly for "emigration and private diplomacy."

In 1985, 8,837 South Korean children were sent abroad for adoption, 6,021 of them to the United States, according to the New York Times.

For each baby, adoption agencies collected a $3,000 to $4,000 “facilitating fee” from the adoptive family, as well as airfare and a separate $1,450 adoption fee, according to internal government documents from the national archives, cited by the New York Times.

This led to the international labels of "baby exporter" and "mail-order babies" that persist today.

Despite economic improvements, South Korea continued to promote adoption, culminating in liberalised intercountry adoptions in the 1980s, ostensibly for "emigration and private diplomacy." In 1985, 8,837 South Korean children were sent abroad for adoption, 6,021 of them to the United States, according to the New York Times. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Committee to Protect Journalists said on Saturday that sentencing of Iraqi Kurdish journalists Sherwan Sherwani and Guhdar Zebari to six years in jail "for jeopardising Kurdish national security" was "unfair and disproportionate".

The journalists were arrested in Kurdish region of Iraq last year after their coverage of anti-government protests in Duhok, a province controlled by ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party, reported Al-Jazeera. The freelance journalists were found guilty on February 16 by a court in Erbil that held them guilty for putting Kurdish national security at risk.

They cited social media exchanges wherein they had criticised the government. According to a report by Voice of America (VOA), Sherwani`s lawyer said journalistic materials were presented as evidence of spying, and others pointed out that the region`s prime minister had described the journalists as spies in a press conference a week before the trial.

"With this verdict, the Kurdish authorities are sending a clear message: the press freedom that they claim to defend and to uphold and to respect is not being respected," Ignacio Miguel Delgado, the CPJ Middle East and North Africa representative, told Al Jazeera.

"Iraqi Kurdistan keeps claiming that it`s the only democracy [in the region] and it takes pride in that...But what we have witnessed throughout 2020 and into this new year is the exact opposite, at least as far as press freedom goes," said Delgado.

Meanwhile, the VOA has reported Sherwani as saying that he was tortured both mentally and physically during the investigation."While I was under investigation, I was not allowed to see my lawyers, I got tortured physically and mentally, they threatened me of raping my wife," Sherwani told the court.

The shares of South Korean battery material manufacturer Ecopro Co. have increased 919 per cent this year thanks to the business’s explosive growth, which is the highest gain of any company with a market capitalisation of at least $10 billion.

This is a clear indicator that the best-performing stock in the world can withstand almost anything, even the imprisonment of its founder for insider trading.

Lee Dong-chae, its former chairman and chief executive officer, has seen enormous wealth gains as a result of that surge, which is attributed to a large number of Korean retail investors. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, he and his family’s fortune increased by nearly $4.5 billion this year to reach $4.9 billion.

These gains have mostly come while Lee has fought allegations of insider trading, which led to him being sentenced to two years in prison and paying a fine of 2.2 billion won ($1.7 million) for breaking capital markets law.

At a time when worries are growing that Ecopro’s share price boom is unsustainable and has outpaced fundamentals, his detention, which South Korea’s Supreme Court upheld last month, has brought attention to the company’s governance.

“I don’t think even Lee expected the company to grow so fast,” Park Ju-gun, head of corporate research firm Leaders Index in Seoul told Bloomberg. “Their internal infrastructure may not have developed at the speed of their growth.”

The absence of Lee is felt by the company, according to a spokeswoman who told Bloomberg in a written statement that the company is “desperately in need” of his “forward-looking insight and spirit to challenge.”

Retail Army

Retail investors from South Korea, who dominate the country’s share market, are the driving force behind Ecopro’s surge. This year, companies that produce materials or components used in the construction of cars are prospering, and equities related to electric vehicles are the most popular trade. The cathodes used in lithium-ion batteries for clients including Samsung SDI Co. and SK On Co. are provided by Ecopro BM Co., a listed subsidiary of Ecopro. Ecopro BM Co. is up 227 per cent and is the largest firm on the nation’s tech-heavy junior market Kosdaq, followed by its parent.

Ecopro’s quick rise is proof that investors’ rising desire for businesses can profit from the booming EV sector. However, there are questions about whether the increase has been too quick. Market analysts warn that the speculative wagers made by the influx of new retail investors brought on by the Covid 19 pandemic are capable of generating both unbearable losses and spectacular rewards.

According to Park, the market for rechargeable batteries will surely grow in the future, but it is unusual to see only a few firms making significant profits, according to Park. He also said that Ecopro has overheated as a result of its popularity with retail investors.

When compared to the same period last year, Ecopro’s revenue increased by 64 per cent to 2 trillion won, but its operating profit only increased by less than 1 per cent to 170.3 billion won. Despite increasing sales of EV cathodes, rising metal prices and currency fluctuations hurt profitability, according to the company’s earnings report. Ecopro BM is the source of the majority of its income.

Environmental inspiration

Lee, who was raised in a low-income household in the southeast port city of Pohang and attended night classes to study business management, established Ecopro in 1998 after being moved by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol’s goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Initially concentrating Ecopro on creating ecologically friendly items, the 63-year-old, who had previously worked as an accountant and had another business selling furs that didn’t take off, switched to inventing materials for EV batteries 20 years ago.

Last year in March, he stepped down as CEO following allegations that numerous workers, including Lee, engaged in insider trading. According to a statement made by the Supreme Court last month, Lee used accounts that were registered to him under a different name and those that belonged to his children to trade Ecopro BM stocks using secret knowledge about the company’s cathode supply agreements in 2020 and 2021. He made almost 1.1 billion won as a result, it claimed.

With around 25 per cent of the company’s shares held directly and indirectly, Lee is still the largest stakeholder. According to the spokesperson, he and his family own the minimum of shares required to retain their managerial authority.

Governance improvements

The company established a monitoring system for insider trades, including those in non-listed companies, once the charges against Lee were made, the Ecopro representative said. By requiring high-profile executives and workers to register stock transactions, it also stepped-up compliance efforts.

The corporation joined the Fair-Trade Commission’s list of big business groups with assets worth more than 5 trillion won earlier this year. The holding company with 26 affiliates is now subject to stricter rules and scrutiny as a result of the inclusion.

Nevertheless, it is still unclear whether Ecopro can keep up with market expectations given the stock’s extraordinarily high value.

“Their internal infrastructure may not have developed at the speed of their growth.” The absence of Lee is felt by the company, according to a spokeswoman who told Bloomberg in a written statement that the company is “desperately in need” of his “forward-looking insight and spirit to challenge.” Retail Army Retail investors from South Korea, who dominate the country’s share market, are the driving force behind Ecopro’s surge. Environmental inspiration Lee, who was raised in a low-income household in the southeast port city of Pohang and attended night classes to study business management, established Ecopro in 1998 after being moved by the 1997 Kyoto Protocol’s goal to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Governance improvements The company established a monitoring system for insider trades, including those in non-listed companies, once the charges against Lee were made, the Ecopro representative said. (With inputs from Bloomberg) WATCH WION LIVE HERE

Imprisoned South Korean billionaire’s wealth soars 919 pc. Here's why

August saw an increase in South Korea’s annual consumer inflation to 3.4 per cent, while the month-over-month rate reached its highest level since early 2017. Due to this, policymakers are on guard, keeping a look out for any sustained price increases.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) maintained its interest rates for a fifth consecutive meeting last month as it continued to place a high priority on price stability in the face of elevated growth concerns.

After increasing by 0.1 per cent the month before, the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 1.0 per cent in August, according to official data released on Tuesday, exceeding the median increase of 0.3 per cent predicted by a Reuters survey.

The rate of annual inflation, which increased for the first time in seven months and exceeded the economists’ forecast of 2.7 per cent, was the fastest since April. It came after a 2.3 per cent increase in July, the smallest increase in two years.

The BOK has predicted that consumer inflation will likely pick up in August and September to approximately 3 per cent before declining once more, so the most recent numbers shouldn’t come as a surprise to policymakers.

The finance ministry commented on the report, stating that while temporary factors like bad weather and an increase in global energy prices had an impact on the inflation rate, the overall decreasing trend in prices remained consistent.

Prices for petroleum goods increased 8.1 per cent during the course of the month, agricultural prices rose 10.5 per cent, and prices for public services increased 0.5 per cent.

On an annual basis, Core CPI, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, increased by 3.3 per cent, remaining constant from the previous month.

Previous inflation rates

Prior to the recent development, South Korea’s inflation rate had decreased in July to its lowest level in more than two years, providing further proof that the central bank is making progress in its campaign to reduce price hikes.

Data from the statistics agency indicated that consumer prices increased 2.3 per cent from a year earlier, slowing from June’s 2.7 per cent increase. According to economists, inflation would be 2.4 per cent.

Headline price increase was expected to drop down in July, pick up again in August, and fluctuate about 3 per cent through the end of the year, according to the Bank of Korea’s prediction. The recent data will is crucial for central bank when discussing the interest rate policy.
