South Korea have not won the Asian Cup since 1960 and Klinsmann said: "It's all about timing now and I think we are ready for this big, big competition.

"It's 64 years -- 64 years is a long time for Korea. It's about time that we get this done."

South Korea have been drawn in Group E and will face Malaysia, Jordan and Bahrain in the first round.

They lost 1-0 to eventual champions Qatar in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Klinsmann, a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990, will have one of the strongest squads in the tournament in Qatar and he said he could "see it in their eyes that they are hungry for it".

"I have a good feeling because they're doing well at their clubs," he said.

"They're healthy, they're fit, they're ambitious and they're very hungry. This is the foundation for playing a good tournament."

Son will be appearing at his fourth Asian Cup and was part of the South Korea team that lost to hosts Australia in the 2015 final.

Hwang scored twice in Wolves' 4-1 win over Brentford to move one goal behind Son, who has 11, in the Premier League scoring charts.

<h2>'One of the favourites'</h2>

Lee is also making a splash after moving to Paris from Mallorca in the summer, and Klinsmann described him as "a flower that starts to bloom".

"We have a lot of different pieces in that roster and that makes us one of the favourites for the Asian Cup," said Klinsmann.

"We have to fine tune these elements over the next couple of weeks and then go into the tournament with confidence."

Klinsmann was unable to select Hwang Ui-jo, who has been suspended by South Korea because of a police investigation into allegations he illegally filmed an ex-girlfriend.

The Norwich City forward is accused of filming a sexual encounter with the former partner on his phone without consent. He denies the allegation.

"It's very difficult for us coaches to deal with that because it's not in our power," said Klinsmann.

In the Far East where tensions ran high this year North Korea's Relentless missile tests continued as South Korea and Japan got closer. The United States meanwhile increased its presence in the region with more drills and Military posturing in the Korean Waters. Let's take a look.

WION Rewind 2023: Tensions rose high across the Korean peninsula

The new Cheonan warship of South Korea, named after the vessel torpedoed by North Korea in 2010, has embarked on a significant mission, marked by heightened combat readiness. The sinking of the original Cheonan, resulting in the deaths of 46 sailors, remains a politically sensitive issue in South Korea, where skepticism about North Korea's involvement persists.

<h2>Symbolic support from President Yoon Suk Yeol</h2>

President Yoon Suk Yeol, known for his hawkish stance, has publicly expressed support for the victims of the Cheonan incident. Wearing a T-shirt and hat featuring the ship, President Yoon has symbolically stood by the memory of the torpedoed warship.

The new Cheonan, a 2,800-tonne frigate, signifies a considerable advancement in anti-submarine capabilities. With a mission to protect the West Sea, the vessel is equipped with long-range anti-submarine torpedoes and tactical ship-to-ship guided missiles. These enhancements enable the warship to effectively target enemy submarines from a considerable distance and strike onshore facilities commanding such submarines.

"We will be fully prepared for battle and equipped with unbeatable combat readiness posture," the Cheonan's chief said, according to the statement.

"If the enemy provokes in the West Sea, we will respond immediately and strongly until the end," the chief added.

The deployment of the new Cheonan comes amidst escalating nuclear and military threats from North Korea.

North Korea leader Kim Jong Un's recent statement regarding the possibility of a nuclear attack if provoked adds to the heightened tensions in the region. Additionally, North Korea's recent testing of the Hwasong-18 intercontinental ballistic missile and the launch of a military spy satellite have further strained inter-Korean ties.

South Korea's upgraded warship, Cheonan, begins mission amidst North Korean tensions

South Korea and Japan engaged in high-level economic talks on Thursday, marking the resumption of discussions that had been stalled for eight years, Reuters reported.<o:p></o:p>

The talks, initiated in 1999, faced a hiatus since 2016 due to strained relations stemming from historical disputes related to Japan's occupation of Korea from 1910 to 1945. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, prioritising diplomatic mending, has taken significant steps to improve ties with Tokyo since assuming office in 2022.<o:p></o:p>

Kang Jae-kwon, South Korea's deputy foreign minister for economic affairs, met with his Japanese counterpart Keiichi Ono, senior deputy foreign minister, to assess bilateral economic cooperation and discuss economic security policy. Kang expressed optimism, stating, "I hope that today's meeting will be a constructive time to contribute to restoring and deepening economic relations between the two countries."<o:p></o:p>

The thaw in relations reflects a broader trend of increasing cooperation driven by shared geopolitical concerns. Earlier this year, South Korea announced plans for its companies to compensate individuals who were forced to work under Japan's occupation from 1910 to 1945, signalling efforts to resolve historical disputes. This move aimed to strengthen unity among US-led efforts against common challenges posed by China and North Korea.<o:p></o:p>

In a demonstration of enhanced trilateral collaboration, Japan, South Korea, and the United States recently launched a real-time missile data-sharing system to monitor Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs. <o:p></o:p>

Furthermore, Japan reinstated South Korea to its "white list" for exports, granting fast-track trade status, and lifted export curbs on high-tech materials in March. However, despite these positive steps, lingering friction remains in the ties between Japan and South Korea.<o:p></o:p>

Ongoing challenges include South Korea's decade-long ban on seafood from the vicinity of the Fukushima nuclear power plant and a recent South Korean court ruling in favour of "comfort women" – women forced to work in Japanese wartime brothels. <o:p></o:p>

Diplomatic Thaw: South Korea and Japan renew economic talks after eight-year hiatus

A group of South Korean students has taken legal action against the government, alleging that their college entrance examination concluded 90 seconds earlier than scheduled, as reported by BBC.

Each student is seeking 20 million won (around US$15k)&nbsp;in damages, equivalent to the cost of a year's tuition for a retest. Their lawyer argues that this timing error had a widespread impact on the overall performance of the students.

The college admission exam, widely known as Suneung, stands out as an arduous eight-hour test marathon encompassing various subjects.

This examination, considered one of the toughest globally, plays a pivotal role in determining university placements, job prospects, and even future relationships.

To aid students' concentration, the government implements measures such as closing airspace and delaying the stock market opening during the annual exam.

More than half a million students participated in the Suneung exam this year, and the results were released on December 8. The lawsuit, filed by a group of 39 students, highlights a crucial incident during the Korean language test in the capital Seoul.

The bell rang prematurely, prompting supervisors to collect answer sheets despite student protests. Although the mistake was acknowledged before the next session, only one and a half minutes were granted back during the lunch break.

The mishap left students emotionally distressed, impeding their ability to focus on the remaining sections of the exam. Some students even left the examination hall. Attorney Kim Woo-suk, representing the students, asserted that education authorities had not issued an apology for the incident. Public broadcaster KBS quoted officials attributing the error to a misreading of time by the supervisor at the specific test center.

South Korean residents expressed concerns on Monday (Dec 18) after temperatures in Seoul plummeted in an unexpected descent.

“Just last week, I wore short-sleeved clothing... suddenly, within a day, it became extremely cold,” said graduate student Lee Seo-hyun from a central area of the capital, where pedestrians were seen wearing puffer jackets and gloves.

Temperatures in Seoul touched a record low of minus 12.2 degrees Celsius on Monday and were forecast to go down to minus 7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday (Dec 19), as per the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

On the contrary, Seoul reached 16.8 degrees Celsius on Dec 8, which was the second-highest temperature recorded in December since 1968, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Residents, expressing concern over the unprecedented swing in temperature, said that they were confused about the clothing to wear as just a few weeks back, the temperature was so warm that wearing a jacket was not even an option and within a day the temperature dipped low.

South Korea experiences unexpected temperature swings, raises climate concerns

After overseeing the third test of his nation's most advanced missile, which is intended to target the U.S. mainland, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un warned "more offensive actions" to counter what he called growing military threats from the United States, state media said on Tuesday.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday (Dec 18) that North Korea's latest missile launches violated resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and were a threat to peace and stability.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Monday (Dec 18) that North Korea's latest missile launches violated resolutions of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and were a threat to peace and stability. The launches are "not only a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions but also a threat to peace and stability of the region and we strongly condemn" them, Kishida told a gathering of South-East Asian leaders in Tokyo, the news agency AFP reported. On Monday, North Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile with the potential capability of striking the United States, South Korea's capital Seoul and Japan's capital Tokyo. This firing followed the test of a shorter-range missile on Sunday night. Missile launches pose a threat to Pyongyang's neighbours: US Apart from Japan, the US also condemned North Korea's latest missile launches. Speaking to AFP, a State Department spokesperson said, "These launches, like the other ballistic missile launches Pyongyang has conducted this year, are in violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions." The spokesperson added that the launches posed a threat to Pyongyang's neighbours and undermined regional security. On Monday, the South Korean military said that it detected the launch of a long-range ballistic missile from the Pyongyang area on Monday that flew 1,000 kilometres before splashing down in the East Sea. According to the Japanese defence ministry, the missile was an ICBM-class missile with a potential range covering all of the United States. "The ICBM-class ballistic missile launched this time, if calculated based on the trajectory, depending on weight of warhead, could have a flying range of over 15,000 kilometres (9,320 miles)," said Shingo Miyake, parliamentary vice-minister of defence. In 2023, North Korea fired four ICBMs, with the last launch in July. (With inputs from agencies)

North Korea's missile launches a threat to peace and stability: Japanese PM Kishida

North Korea launched a ballistic projectile on Sunday (Dec 17), a statement by Seoul's army read, after the United States and South Korea warned any nuclear attack by Pyongyang would lead to the end of its regime.

"Our military detected a suspected short-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang area towards the East Sea at around 22:38 today," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

It further added that the military had amplified its alert stance and was "closely sharing information regarding North Korea's ballistic missile with the United States and Japan".

Japan's defence ministry also stated North Korea launched "what appears to be a ballistic missile", with its coastguard adding that it seemed to have already fallen.

Kyodo News, citing unnamed Japanese government sources, said it was a short-range missile and had fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.

<h2>US, South Korea warn North Korea&nbsp;</h2>

The United States and South Korea issued a warning to North Korea that any kind of nuclear attack against Seoul and Washington "is unacceptable and will result in the end of the (Kim Jong) Un regime”.&nbsp;

"The US side reiterated that any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response," read the statement.

Both allies held their second session of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Washington on Friday (Dec 15), where they discussed nuclear deterrence in the event of conflict with the North.

Earlier on Sunday (Dec 17), a spokesperson for the North's defence ministry slammed the US and South Korea's plans to expand a key annual joint military drill next year to include a nuclear operation drill and warned of "a preemptive and deadly counteraction".

North Korea launched a ballistic projectile on Sunday (Dec 17), a statement by Seoul's army read, after the United States and South Korea warned any nuclear attack by Pyongyang would lead to the end of its regime. "Our military detected a suspected short-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang area towards the East Sea at around 22:38 today," Seoul's Joint Chiefs of Staff said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan. It further added that the military had amplified its alert stance and was "closely sharing information regarding North Korea's ballistic missile with the United States and Japan". Japan's defence ministry also stated North Korea launched "what appears to be a ballistic missile", with its coastguard adding that it seemed to have already fallen. Kyodo News, citing unnamed Japanese government sources, said it was a short-range missile and had fallen outside Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone. "The US side reiterated that any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response," read the statement. Both allies held their second session of the Nuclear Consultative Group in Washington on Friday (Dec 15), where they discussed nuclear deterrence in the event of conflict with the North. Earlier on Sunday (Dec 17), a spokesperson for the North's defence ministry slammed the US and South Korea's plans to expand a key annual joint military drill next year to include a nuclear operation drill and warned of "a preemptive and deadly counteraction". No one likes getting stuck in traffic with the noise, and the air pollution, not to mention the boredom, but a recent study shows it can also be detrimental to our mental health. A study published in the Journal of Transport &amp; Health shows how a number of effects of longer daily commutes can snowball into depression.&nbsp;

<h2>About the study</h2>

Longer daily commutes have been linked to several adverse effects on one’s health caused by&nbsp;being less physically active, drinking more alcohol and even sleeping poorly since it leaves less time around busy days for commuters to engage in other activities.&nbsp;

However, there is not a lot of research on the health impact of lengthy commutes, particularly in Asian countries.&nbsp;

ALSO READ |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-eating-fatty-foods-while-being-stressed-out-can-lead-to-heart-attack-study-668448">Turns out, comfort food isn't all that comforting to your heart</a>

The recent study was conducted in South Korea, a country which is said to be among those with some of the longest average commuting times and highest rates of depression among the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries.&nbsp;

Researchers analysed data from 23,415 people aged between 20 and 59 years from the Fifth Korean Working Condition Survey, a nationally representative survey conducted in 2017.&nbsp;

The participants were asked to answer questions based on the five-point World Health Organization (WHO) well-being index and the researchers determined their mental health.&nbsp;

The team of researchers also examined several factors including sex, age, education, income, region, marital status, occupation, weekly working hours, shift work, and so on.&nbsp;

<h2>What did the researchers find?</h2>

The findings were published by a research team led by Dr Lee Dong-wook, a professor in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Inha University Hospital in South Korea.&nbsp;

According to the study, people who spend more than 60 minutes commuting to and from work are 1.16 times more likely to suffer from depression than those who spend less than half an hour.&nbsp;

The average daily commute time was 47 minutes, according to the study, which is nearly four hours spent commuting per week if a person worked five days. The researchers said that this much time spent commuting can cause physical as well as psychological stress.&nbsp;

“With less time to spare, people could be short of time to relieve stress and combat physical fatigue through sleep, hobbies, and other activities,” researchers told Korea Biomedical Review (KBR), last week.&nbsp;

They added that this also leaves people with less time to invest in a healthy lifestyle, including exercise which may also contribute to depression. At least one-quarter of the 23,415 participants said that they experience depressive symptoms, which the researchers based on their index scores which is far from an actual diagnosis of any kind.&nbsp;

While the study also does not show any cause and effect it does link more than hour-long commutes to poorer mental health and noted that it was strongest among men who were unmarried, worked more than 52 hours per week and had no children.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, for females, long commuting times were most strongly linked with depressive symptoms among low-income workers, shift workers, and those with children.

“The association between long commuting times and worsened depressive symptoms was found to be stronger among low-income workers,” the researchers noted.&nbsp;

North Korea has warned that it would carry more spy satellite launches in the coming months in order to gather more information about the military activities of its enemies, a commentary carried by state news agency KCNA said on Saturday (Dec 9).

South Korea successfully launched its first spy satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from&nbsp;California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on Friday (Dec 1), days after arch-enemy North Korea did the same.&nbsp;

The satellite was placed in orbit by the powerful rocket, a little over an hour after the launch. Notably,&nbsp;SpaceX stopped its livestream after stage separation and no views of the rocket's second stage were offered.

South Korea's defence ministry issued an update saying it had&nbsp;"successfully established communication with an overseas ground station".&nbsp;

It added that the satellite would help the country gain an overwhelming advantage in competition with North Korea. Notably, the Friday launch was the first of the five satellites that SpaceX has been contracted to launch by 2025.

The South Korean satellite is called&nbsp;425 Project EO/IR and weighs 800 kg in mass. It has infrared (heat-seeking wavelengths) as well as electro-optical capabilities. The subsequent satellites are expected to feature synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which can "see" through cloud cover and at night.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called for the military to be prepared for any provocation by enemies, especially in the backdrop of the launch of the spy satellite, state media KCNA said on Friday (Dec 1). Wary of the enemies, Pyongyang has vowed to deploy armed forces and weapons in large numbers on its border with the South. A day earlier, Kim visited the Air Force headquarters and rolled out operational strategic guidelines to improve the military's readiness and war capabilities. "(Kim) highly evaluated the pilots' tight readiness to perform air combat missions without a glitch regardless of any unfavourable settings," KCNA said. Kim's provocative stance comes hours after Washington announced fresh sanctions on North Korea for the launch of the spy satellite. US has repeatedly condemned the launch of the "Malligyong-1" spy satellite, calling it a "brazen violation" of UN sanctions. On Thursday, the US Treasury Department said it was slapping sanctions, in coordination with Australia, Japan and South Korea on cyber espionage group Kimsuky, accusing it of gathering intelligence to support North Korea's strategic and nuclear ambitions. "Today's actions by the United States, Australia, Japan, and the Republic of Korea reflect our collective commitment to contesting Pyongyang's illicit and destabilising activities," said Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson. "We will remain focused on targeting these key nodes in the DPRK's illicit revenue generation and weapons proliferation." The no. 2 in Pyongyang said the hermit nation would never sit to face Washington for negotiations over its sovereignty. "We make it clear once again to the US, which asked the DPRK to fix the time and agenda for resuming the DPRK-US dialogue," Kim said. "The sovereignty of an independent state can never be an agenda item for negotiations, and therefore, the DPRK will never sit face to face with the US for that purpose," she added. Kim Jong Un calls for military preparedness as US slaps fresh sanctions

Against the backdrop of Christmas songs, 100 South Korean men and women gathered at a hotel near Seoul dressed in their best with name tags hanging on their clothes, hoping to find love.

The government hopes they make babies.

They were participants at a mass blind-dating event hosted by Seongnam city, an attempt by the local government to reverse a falling birth rate in a country where the popularity of marriage and enthusiasm towards parenthood have nosedived.

The participants, in their 20s and 30s, sat quietly next to one another until a relationship coach kick started the event with a rock-paper-scissor game, quickly filling the room with chatter and laughter.

The city appeared determined to arrange a match, preparing red wine, chocolates, games, free make-up services, and even background checks for the participating singles.

Lee Yu-mi, 36, who works for the city government, said she had to apply three times to finally get a spot at the event.

"I had no idea it would be this competitive," she said.

After five rounds of events this year, 198 people among 460 left the event as "couples," agreeing to exchange contacts with their pairs, the city said.

The South Korean capital Seoul had considered a similar event but put the plan on hold after facing criticism that it would be a waste of taxpayers' money that failed to tackle the reasons behind people opting not to marry and have babies - most notably the sky-high costs of housing and education.

Hwang Da-bin, who took part in a September event, said it saved him the cost of joining other social events or signing up for professional dating agencies.

"We are facing a real demographic crisis and the government needs to do whatever it can. I don't understand people complaining over this," Hwang said.

South Korea's fertility rate dropped to a record low&nbsp;of 0.78 last year in yet another grim milestone for the country with the world's lowest number of expected children for each woman.

The number is far below 1.66 in the United States and 1.3 in Japan in 2021. The average rate among countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development stood at 1.58 the same year.

Jung Jae-hoon, a professor at the department of social welfare at Seoul Women's University, said it was "nonsense" to expect these events to lead to higher birth rates.

"You need to spend more money directly on supporting pregnancy, child delivery and parenting to call it a policy to boost birth rates," Jung said.

Despite criticism, thousands of people have signed up for this year's blind-dating events arranged by the Seongnam city.

Seongnam Mayor Shin Sang-jin said spreading positive views on marriage would eventually help raise the birth rates, stressing that the blind-dating events are just one of many policies his city has rolled out to reverse the plunging rates.

"Low birth rates cannot be resolved with a single policy," Shin said. "It's also the city's job to create the environment for people who want to marry find their partners."
