Iyer, who suffered an injury to his left rib cage while attempting to complete a catch during the final ODI against Australia at the SCG, continues to recover in a Sydney hospital. India batter Shreyas Iyer, in the last two years, has seen it all. He was dropped from the BCCI's central contract list, went back to domestic cricket, won everything, became Champions Trophy winner and is now back in the India ODI squad as a vice-captain. Indian ODI team’s new vice-captain Shreyas Iyer readies for the forthcoming Australia One-Dayers with a match-winning 62 against Australia A in the third and final unofficial one-day game in Kanpur on Sunday (Oct 5). Chasing a mammoth 318, Iyer played a handy role in helping India A clinch a two-wicket victory and a clean sweep over the visitors. Alongside him, all-rounder Riyan Parag also scored as many runs, while the highlight of the evening was opener Prabhsimran Singh’s brilliant 102 off 68 balls. His blistering knock included seven maximums and eight fours. In a stadium filled with over 24,000 fans, Australia A captain Jack Edwards won the toss and elected to bat first. Following a shallow start, with four wickets falling inside eight overs, all-rounder Cooper Connolly saved AUS A’s grace with a fighting 64 off 49 balls, hitting four sixes and five fours. Although two more wickets inside the middle overs broke their momentum, a 152-run stand for the seventh wicket between Liam Scott and Edwards helped them reach the 300-mark, with the side eventually getting wrapped up on 317.

IND A vs AUS A, 3rd match: Shreyas Iyer readies for Australia ODIs with match-winning 62 in chase

Shreyas Iyer, an Indian middle-order batter, has requested a break from Test and first-class cricket to focus on his fitness. The decision comes as Iyer has been experiencing discomfort during his recent appearances, and he has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow him a short pause from red-ball cricket. Iyer's request follows his withdrawal from the four-day match against Australia A, where he was set to captain the side. After playing the first game in Lucknow, he decided to submit a request to the BCCI and also spoke with chief selector Ajit Agarkar. The discomfort Iyer felt during the Duleep Trophy, where he represented West Zone earlier this month, seemed to resurface during the India A vs. Australia A match last week. Immediately after that game, he consulted with the BCCI physios and India A coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar before writing to the BCCI. Iyer left Lucknow for Mumbai soon after to continue his recovery. Also read | 'Those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones': India’s message to Pakistan on refusing handshakes explained While Iyer underwent back surgery in 2023, he is not bidding adieu to his Test career. Iyer has played 14 Tests for India and featured in 70 first-class games, most of which have been for Mumbai. Despite stepping away from red-ball cricket, Iyer intends to continue his career in limited-overs formats. He is expected to be an automatic choice for the upcoming ODI series against Australia, which is scheduled to take place between October 19 and November 8, 2025. There is also a possibility that Iyer could be selected for the T20I squad.

Iyer's request follows his withdrawal from the four-day match against Australia A, where he was set to captain the side. After playing the first game in Lucknow, he decided to submit a request to the BCCI and also spoke with chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

According to sources close to Iyer, he was quoted as saying to Cricbuzz, “He is only seeking a break. After focusing on his fitness, he will return to red-ball cricket stronger.” It is expected that Iyer will miss the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, where he usually plays for Mumbai. Shreyas Iyer is back in the mix in Indian Cricket after being left out of the Asia Cup 2025 squad, as the BCCI named him the India-A captain for two four-day games against Australia-A in Lucknow, starting Tuesday (Sep 16). Nitish Kumar Reddy, who suffered a knee injury during India’s previous Test tour (against England), has also been included in the 15-man squad. Keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is Iyer’s deputy, while star opener KL Rahul and top seamer Mohammed Siraj are also named, but for the second game only; however, the BCCI release hasn’t mentioned who they would replace. Besides these first-team players, Prasidh Krishna, Sai Sudharsan and Abhimanyu Easwaran – all part of the Anderson-Tendulkar five-match series, which India drew 2-2, have also been included, while spare keeper-batter N Jagadeesan, who replaced injured Rishabh Pant in the squad for the final Test, is also picked. Also read | Team India kicks off Asia Cup 2025 campaign with first training session in Dubai Meanwhile, Iyer's return to the red-ball setup also boosts his chances of making a comeback to the Test side, with the home season starting shortly after the conclusion of the Asia Cup 2025 in the UAE. Shreyas Iyer named India-A captain for four-day games against touring Australia-A; check schedule

Indian cricket and the rumour mill seem to walk in parallel, with something new coming out of it every day. The latest, however, is that Shreyas Iyer would succeed Rohit Sharma as Team India’s new ODI captain. Even though he is not part of the forthcoming 2025 Asia Cup in the UAE, the rumours state that he leads the race, ahead of Shubman Gill, for India’s One-Day captaincy role. Former cricketer-turned-broadcaster Aakash Chopra addressed the rumour mill, ending this debate with an assertive answer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said the rumour market has been hot since, shrugging off the latest speculation of Iyer being the frontline choice. "Good question, because the rumour markets are hot. AB de Villiers is the latest to comment on Shreyas Iyer's situation in Indian Cricket. Not for the first and clearly not for the last has a star batter (in the Indian batting line-up) found himself in such a tight spot, with plenty having already gone through it. After failing to find a place in India’s potent 15-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, Iyer received massive support from social media users, former cricketers and even broadcasters, with ex-South Africa captain AB de Villiers being the latest to share his views on the same, calling this whole episode ‘weird’. Maybe not even Shreyas knows,” De Villiers said during a live chat on X. "Sometimes, when it's a 50-50 call between two players, I would always lean towards the guy I feel offers more from a team perspective off the field. Does he add value in the team room? Does he uplift others, or does he drain energy? Maybe it's got something to do with that. I'm just honestly taking a complete guess,” he continued.
De Villiers on Bumrah
Bumrah was the talking point on India’s last Test tour of the UK, which ended with both teams sharing honours. The ace quick played just three matches on that tour, as also suggested by the NCA and team doctors to manage his workload better, returning with 14 wickets, including breaking several bowling records. Considering his persistent back injuries, the management would be careful with his playing time in the 2025 Asia Cup, with De Villiers thinking on the same lines. “Great to see him in the squad, fit and ready to go. I don’t think he will play all the games,” De Villiers said of Bumrah’s playing time in the UAE. “I saw reports saying he will be earmarked for the games that matter, and I love that about the selectors being proactive. That’s how you should be managing your senior and most impactful players.” “It’s not like they are picking and choosing. There’s just so much cricket these days. For your older guys, their work has taken its toll over the years. Once you start managing these players, you will get the best out of them, and I love it that they’ve started doing that with Jasprit Bumrah,” he added.

Asia Cup: De Villiers finds Iyer’s snub as ‘weird’; shares thoughts on ‘Bumrah’s workload management’

When India announced its 15-man squad for the Asia Cup in September 2025, one name was conspicuously missing: Shreyas Iyer. The Punjab Kings captain – fresh off a stellar Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign – did not even find a place among the reserves. His omission has left fans and experts baffled, considering the weight of his performances in the past year. In IPL 2025, Iyer was at his prime best. He amassed 604 runs in 17 innings at an average of 50.33 and a sensational strike-rate of 175, guiding Punjab Kings to their first final since 2014. Just a few months before that, he had been India’s standout performer in the ICC Champions Trophy, where he topped the batting charts for India with 243 runs at an average of 48.60. For his consistent form, he was even named ICC’s Player of the Month in March 2025.
The Statistical Case
Numbers alone should have guaranteed Iyer a spot. In the 2025 Champions Trophy, he scored two important half-centuries and played a crucial role in India lifting the trophy after a 12-year wait. In T20Is since the 2024 World Cup, he has piled up nearly 950 runs in 25 innings at an average of 49.94 and a strike-rate approaching 180, including a career-best unbeaten 130. His overall ODI record stands at more than 2,400 runs with five centuries and 18 half-centuries. In the IPL, he has crossed the 3,000-run mark with 21 half-centuries to his name. The numbers don’t lie. They suggest a batsman in peak form and a natural choice for a middle-order slot.
The Leader India Doesn’t Pick
But Iyer’s case is about more than just runs. He has developed into one of the finest leaders in Indian cricket. Remarkably, he has taken three different IPL franchises – Delhi, Kolkata, and Punjab – into finals. In 2024, he lifted the trophy with Kolkata Knight Riders; in 2025, he guided Punjab Kings to their first final in over a decade. He has also led Mumbai to a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win, underscoring his ability to inspire teams across formats and competitions. Iyer was also a central figure in India’s Champions Trophy win earlier this year, not just as a batsman but as a calm, tactical presence in pressure situations. Former selectors have often lauded his cricketing brain and fielding ability, qualities that add further value to his resume.
The Selectors’ Stand
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar defended the decision, saying Iyer had done ‘nothing wrong’ but ‘needs to wait for his chance’. His argument was simple: the squad balance left little room to accommodate him. But critics were unconvinced. Former coach Abhishek Nayar said he “can’t fathom” leaving Iyer out even of the larger pool, calling it a message that the Mumbai batsman was not in the selectors’ long-term plans. Other voices, from ex-players like Surinder Khanna to senior players such as Ravichandran Ashwin, have described the move as unfair. To many, the choice to overlook a player in such rich form – especially in favour of less experienced names – reeks of muddled priorities.
A Pattern of Neglect
For Iyer, heartbreak at the selection table is nothing new. He was overlooked for the 2021, 2022, and 2024 T20 World Cups, despite being among the runs each time. Now, the Asia Cup exclusion has reopened the same debate: what more must he do? At 30, he is at the peak of his career, scoring runs across formats, leading teams to finals, and yet finding himself outside India’s plans for major tournaments. The official explanation leans on continuity and combination, with whispers that management prefers left-handed power-hitters in the middle order. But until such reasoning is stated plainly, the narrative remains one of preference over performance. Ultimately, Shreyas Iyer’s Asia Cup snub has become a talking point not just about one player but about India’s selection philosophy. Do numbers and performances carry enough weight, or is the system increasingly skewed by pre-decided combinations and preferences? Iyer himself continues to remain professional, focused on domestic cricket and franchise commitments. But the question hangs heavy over the Asia Cup: is India overlooking one of its most reliable middle-order batsmen at the exact moment he should be playing a pivotal role? As the tournament unfolds without him, the debate will not be about whether Iyer deserved selection – that much is already clear – but whether Indian cricket can afford to keep sidelining him in its pursuit of balance.

Asia Cup 2025: Why Shreyas Iyer keeps getting overlooked? Numbers don't lie

Shreyas Iyer’s absence from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming 2025 Asia Cup is the biggest talking point in Indian cricket and on social media now. Punjab Kings' Priyansh Arya’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season was a mix of ups and downs, but one that reflected his maturity as an aggressive batter. After not so good starts — scores of 26, 16, and 8 in his first three innings in the ongoing edition of the Delhi Premier League — he bounced back with a smashing century, reminding everyone why he is considered one of Delhi’s most exciting young talents. Reflecting on that turnaround, Priyansh admits he needed a small course correction. “Right from the beginning of the innings, I was trying to be aggressive a little too much. My coach told me to spend some time on the wicket, see the ball, and then attack. That made all the difference,” he said while speaking to WION. Sharing the dressing room with international stars has been another step forward for the 24-year-old. “The biggest learning was to back my skills as much as possible,” he shared. Spending time with legends like Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer left a lasting impression: “I had a lot of freedom from both of them. Whether it’s scoring 30 in 10 balls or 30 in 30 balls — if it’s good for the team, it’s valuable.” One lesson even came after failure. “I remember that I was out first ball against Jofra Archer in one of the matches. After the match Ponting told me, ‘Next time if a bowler comes at you, try hitting a six first ball. That gave me confidence,” Priyansh recalled with a smile. Priyansh first came in the spotlight last year when he smashed six sixes in an over during the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League. Expectations naturally rose this season, but he insists pressure has never been the issue. “There was no pressure last year, and no pressure this year as well. I only expect myself to perform better than before.” Still, he knows his game must grow. “Consistency is the main thing. Impactful innings are good, but if the team doesn’t win, then I have to bring more consistency.” While he has made his name in T20s, Priyansh is clear about his next target — red-ball cricket. “I want to play red-ball cricket for Delhi. The conditions are different, the challenge is tougher. But if it’s not challenging, it won’t be fun,” he says, while adding that current India Test captain Shubman Gill is his inspiration in the longer format of the game. Priyansh’s journey from the Delhi Premier League to the IPL is now well known, and he continues to see the DPL as the perfect platform for talent. “Every franchise has scouts coming here. Players are being picked from here. If you keep it simple and focus on consistency, that’s the best way forward." Now representing Outer Delhi Warriors after a season with South Delhi Superstars, he has quickly adapted to the new environment. He also recalled about his partnership with Karan. “When he hit that shot on the first ball and it went for a boundary, I knew he was fearless. I like his confidence,” Priyansh shared. Coming to the league, Priyansh Arya's Outer Delhi Warriors is at the bottom of the table with just three points from seven matches. The left-handed batter has 191 runs to his name in the ongoing edition along with one century.

The wait is over; the BCCI selectors and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav have picked a power-packed 15-man India squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, starting on September 9 in the UAE. Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill returns to the side, while the selectors overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the eight-team tournament. On the other hand, ace quick Jasprit Bumrah also headlines the pace attack, with the selectors picking as many as three spinners.
Here is the full squad -
Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh Amid all reports of the selectors contemplating picking either Gill or Shreyas Iyer for the continental tournament, they made up their choice, picking Gill and naming him as the vice-captain. The selectors have backed the core, including openers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, with Tilak Varma also being retained. While the plus remains that most of those who featured in the past two T20I series, including Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel, have also been retained, bringing back Jitesh Sharma as a spare keeper comes as a boost for the Indian Team. Shivam Dube’s inclusion also improves the all-rounders’ column. India’s fast bowling department includes three seamers - Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana, with Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy being the two frontline spinners. Meanwhile, the selectors, however, took some harsh calls by dropping some of the top names and aspiring contenders for the Asia Cup, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, among others. Jaiswal, Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Riyan Parag and Prasidh Krishna are part of the standby players.
No Iyer for Asia Cup
The biggest miss of the lot was Shreyas Iyer. The Indian team’s white-ball mainstay was largely touted to be picked for the 2025 Asia Cup, but the selectors, the head coach and SKY decided against bringing him back. His exclusion comes as a shock to the fans, as Iyer’s credentials were too strong to avoid him. In the past two IPL seasons, Iyer led two different sides to the final, winning the title with one (KKR in 2024). His calm demeanour and leadership skills could have come in handy for the Indian Team, besides his experience of playing in these conditions, having earlier helped the Indian Team clinch the Champions Trophy in the UAE early this year. Meanwhile, India is placed in Group A alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Oman, and the tournament host (the UAE). Group B consists of the remaining four teams, including Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Hong Kong. The marquee India vs Pakistan Group game is scheduled for Sunday (Sep 14), with both expected to meet again later in the tournament.

Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill returns to the side, while the selectors overlooked Shreyas Iyer for the eight-team tournament. On the other hand, ace quick Jasprit Bumrah also headlines the pace attack, with the selectors picking as many as three spinners. Here is the full squad - Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana and Rinku Singh Amid all reports of the selectors contemplating picking either Gill or Shreyas Iyer for the continental tournament, they made up their choice, picking Gill and naming him as the vice-captain. No Iyer for Asia Cup The biggest miss of the lot was Shreyas Iyer.

India Asia Cup 2025 Squad Announcement: Shubman Gill returns, Iyer dropped as BCCI name 15-man team

All the talks around Team India‘s Asia Cup 2025 squad continue to take new turns every day, with the latest report suggesting that the men’s selection committee has finalised at least 14 players, with four players fighting for that one '15th' spot. Ajit Agarkar-led panel will meet in Mumbai on Tuesday (Aug 19) with T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also joining them for the squad selection discussion. While several first-team players will retain their places, including the openers Abhishek Sharma and gloveman Sanju Samson, talks over excluding Test captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal have also made headlines. However, the crucial point here is picking one of the four players for the final spot, including Rinku Singh, Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar and Riyan Parag. An Indian Express report suggests that the selectors are contemplating between picking a specific batter (in Iyer or Rinku) or choosing between all-rounders Parag and Sundar. Also read | India's probable Asia Cup 2025 squad: Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer in; Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj out Per the report, the selection committee is more inclined towards picking an extra batter, with Iyer likely to win the race ahead of Rinku Singh. Iyer's ability to play spin better, his leadership qualities, and experience (that he brings to the table) make him a handy customer in the middle order. Without questioning his leadership skills, which saw him take two different IPL teams to finals in successive years and win a title with one (KKR in 2024), Iyer’s batting experience in these conditions, having played an instrumental role in helping India win the Champions Trophy (Feb 2025), could benefit the Indian Team.
Gambhir’s approach is a bit different
Having worked and mentored Iyer to an IPL title in 2024, Gambhir could also have him back in the squad; however, in his brief stint as the Indian head coach, Gambhir has been inclined towards picking all-rounders. Even on the recently concluded Test tour of England, Gambhir had four all-rounders, including Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Ravindra Jadeja, all playing crucial roles throughout the series. As for Rinku and Parag, both are unlikely to get a nod ahead of the abovementioned players. While Rinku also played under Gambhir in KKR and Parag tasted little T20I success in Gautam’s reign, both could perhaps be picked for bilateral series; however, both remain part of India’s T20 WC pool.

India’s Asia Cup Squad: Rinku, Iyer, Sundar among those fighting for ‘15th spot’ – Report

The 2025 Asia Cup is less than three weeks away, with the Indian Team squad selection announcement for the continental tournament just around the corner. With the BCCI men’s selection committee having too much on its shelf to cater to, including taking some bold yet harsh calls, the latest reports suggest that chief selector Ajit Agarkar is willing to welcome Shreyas Iyer into the side. The UAE will host the eight-team tournament, to be played in the T20 format, starting September 9, with arch-rivals India and Pakistan facing off in the marquee clash on September 14 in Dubai.
