Earlier in the innings, Punjab Kings suffered a batting collapse after a fiery powerplay spell by Harshit Rana helped defending champions <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kolkata-knight-riders">Kolkata Knight Riders</a> bowl out Punjab Kings (PBKS) for just 111 runs in 15.3 overs at Mullanpur on Tuesday (April 15) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran came out all guns blazing.&nbsp;The duo feasted on Vaibhav Arora's pace, taking him down for 20 runs, with three fours and a six, with Prabhsimran being the aggressor.&nbsp;However, the combo of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/harshit-rana">Harshit Rana</a> and Ramandeep Singh, kickstarted PBKS's downfall, as Priyansh (22 in 12 balls) and skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a> (0) were dismissed in same over. PBKS were left reeling at 39/2 in 3.4 overs.

But once again, Prabhsimran was removed by the duo of Harshit-Ramandeep for 30 in 15 balls, with two fours and three sixes. PBKS was 54/4 at the end of powerplay.
Nehal Wadhera and Glenn Maxwell tried stitching a partnership. However, Anrich Nortje got Wadhera (10) caught by Venkatesh Iyer while attempting a flick, at deep square leg. PBKS was 74/5 in 8.4 overs. Glenn Maxwell (7) continued his poor run, was dismissed by Varun Chakaravarthy.

Arya&rsquo;s match-winning knock was laced with nine sixes and the innings gave a glimpse into his capabilities. But Arya had already exhibited his hard-hitting talent in the Delhi Premier League in August 2024 when he hit six sixes in an over. Along with Ayush Badoni, he forged a partnership of 286, the highest for any wicket in T20 cricket and scored a 50-ball 120 in that match.<o:p></o:p>

Speaking about his game plan in the lead up to the innings, the young batter said, &ldquo;I felt confident from the first one. &ldquo;The pitch was slightly two-paced but not unplayable. The new ball came on nicely and once I got used to it, I found my rhythm quicky,&rdquo; he added.<o:p></o:p>

&ldquo;I enjoy watching videos of top batters in the world and then work hard in the nets. I always try to improve after every match. I constantly learn from the senior players around me. You can learn a lot by just observing them,&rdquo; he added.<o:p></o:p>

IPL 2025: ‘This is the stage where you want to perform, says PBKS’ Priyansh after scoring stunning ton against CSK

Punjab Kings&rsquo; (PBKS) captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer" rel="dofollow">Shreyas Iyer</a> has been making headlines not just for his on-field performances but also for his candid and heartfelt revelations off it. With two wins in three matches so far in the 18th season of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a>, Iyer seems to have settled well into his leadership role at PBKS. But beneath the confident exterior lies a player who has weathered emotional storms, especially during high-pressure international tournaments.
Speaking on Kandid with Kings&mdash;an in-house podcast hosted by Sahiba Bali on Punjab Kings' official YouTube channel&mdash;Iyer opened up about various facets of his life, including his cricketing highs and lows, personal struggles, and the deep emotional bond he shares with his family.
One of the most striking moments in the episode came when the 30-year-old batter recalled an emotional incident from the 2025 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> that moved him to tears.
&ldquo;The last time I cried properly was during the first practice session of the Champions Trophy,&rdquo; Iyer confessed. &ldquo;I couldn&rsquo;t bat well in the nets. I got angry and started crying. It hit me hard because I had performed really well in the England series and was confident of carrying that momentum into the Champions Trophy.&rdquo;

But the shift from England to the hot, dry conditions of Dubai wasn&rsquo;t easy.&nbsp;&ldquo;The conditions were completely different, and adapting on the very first day was difficult. I wanted to do some extra batting after the session, but I didn&rsquo;t get the chance. That really frustrated me. I felt helpless, and the emotions just burst out,&rdquo; he added.
<h2>'I am extremely close to my family'</h2>
It&rsquo;s rare to see such vulnerability from a professional athlete, especially one leading a high-profile IPL franchise. Iyer&rsquo;s honest admission offered a glimpse into the mental and emotional toll international cricket can take, even on seasoned players.
The conversation wasn&rsquo;t all about cricket, though. Iyer also shared heartwarming stories about his family, revealing how his parents continue to play a vital role in his life&mdash;no matter how big the stage gets.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m extremely close to my family. My mom and dad still come to drop me at the airport before every tour or match. Earlier, I used to feel a bit awkward about it and told them they didn&rsquo;t need to come. But over time, I realised it brings them happiness&mdash;and now I completely embrace it,&rdquo; he said with a smile.
The Champions Trophy might have presented emotional challenges, but Iyer has rebounded well. His leadership and form have been crucial for Punjab Kings, who are aiming for a strong run in IPL 2025.

The Royals, boosted by a strong opening stand from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/yashasvi-jaiswal">Yashasvi Jaiswal</a> and Riyan Parag, posted a commanding 205 in the first innings. Punjab&rsquo;s innings was marred by frequent loss of wickets, preventing any meaningful partnerships from forming. However, Iyer lauded young Nehal Wadhera for his composed performance under pressure.
&ldquo;Nehal was phenomenal. He took his time, assessed the conditions well, and then went after the bowlers. It&rsquo;s a good sign for us,&rdquo; Iyer added. &ldquo;Sometimes, a slight hiccup at the start of the tournament helps wake you up. I personally believe this loss will be good for us.&rdquo;
Despite Rajasthan&rsquo;s overall dominance, Parag had a brief lull during his innings before launching a powerful finish. His unbeaten 43 off just 27 balls, laced with three sixes and as many fours, ensured the Royals crossed the 200-run mark.
Iyer, who won the toss and opted to bowl, admitted his target was to keep Rajasthan to a more manageable score.
&ldquo;I was thinking 180-185 would be a decent score to chase here. The pitch had a bit of hold, and we tried not to give them pace. But we failed to execute our plans,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Still, I&rsquo;m glad this happened early in the tournament&mdash;we&rsquo;ve got plenty of time to regroup.&rdquo;

A new-look Punjab Kings is set to play their second Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) who have blown hot and cold in two matches played so far. While the match is being played in Lucknow, it is advantage PBKS given their form, better bowling attack and of course the confidence they exuded in the first match.
<h2>IPL 2025: PBKS vs LSG Match Prediction Today</h2>
Lucknow's batting has revolved around Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Pooran in the two matches they have played. Their bowling has become a bit better after addition of Avesh Khan in the last match and rookie Prince Yadav finding his groove as well.

The cause of concern is skipper Rishabh Pant's batting - who has not looked great in the two match and has scored only 15 and 0 in the two matches.
PBKS, on the other hand, posted 244 in their first match thanks to skipper Shreyas Iyer's brilliant 97. The skipper was ably supported by Priyansh Arya at the top and Shashank Singh in the slog overs. In middle overs, they have Glenn Maxwell and Azamatullah Omarzai as well.
As for bowling, Arshdeep Singh has been phenomenal over the years for them and he will find it helpful at the grassy Lucknow pitch. Yuzvendra Chahal is their lead spinner with Vijaykumar Vyshak playing his part to perfection as well.
The team winning the toss should bowl first given the dew expectation and the average winning score should be around 185-190 run mark.

Gujarat Titans lost their IPL 2025 season opener against Punjab Kings by 11 runs on Tuesday (Mar 25) in a huge chase of 244. Titans gave it all while trying to compensate for bowlers but eventually fell short and managed 232/5. Titans skipper Shubman Gill reflected on the loss and said that middle overs and lack of runs in the first few overs caused them the game.
"We got our chances when we were bowling and batting. Too many runs we conceded in the back end of the innings. Those three overs in the middle, we scored around 18 runs. That, and our first three overs we didn't score many runs. That cost us the game. Apart from that, many positives for us today," said Gill to broadcasters after the game.

Punjab Kings were well supported by skipper Shreyas Iyer's unbeaten 97 off 42. He sacrificed his century for maximum innings total and Shashank Singh paid the faith with five fours in last over - finished 44 off 16 balls. At the top, debutant Priyansh Arya scored a sparkling 47 off 23 balls.
"Ecstatic, to be honest. Getting 97 not out in the first match is always the icing on the cake. No better feeling to be honest. It was important for me to go ahead and adapt. I got four off the first ball, and that gave an immense boost. That flicked six off Rabada - I think the momentum changed," said Iyer off his innings.
While chasing, GT were going good with 145/2 at 12.3 overs after scoring 61 in first six overs. Sai Sudharsan got out after scoring 74 off 41 balls and a bit of slowdown followed. Jos Buttler, who went on to score 54 off 33, and Sherfane Rutheford (46 off 28) took them to almost 199 in 18 overs.
With two overs remaining, the task was hard and Vijaykumar Vyshak gave 19 runs in the penultimate over - leaving 27 for Arshdeep Singh in the last over which the India pacer defended successfully.

'That cost us the game': GT skipper Shubman Gill reflects on 11-run loss against PBKS in high-scoring game

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer showed the ultimate teamsmanship as he sacrificed his well-deserved 100 to maximise the overall innings score. Iyer remained not out on 97 off 42 balls - hitting five fours and nine sixes in his innings as PBKS finished with 243/5 in their season opener against Gujarat Titans on Tuesday (Mar 25).
Iyer was on 91 runs with two overs remaining and him having the strike - the batter hit a four on the first ball of the penultimate over but then a single on every other ball meant he ended up on non-strike with one over left in the innings.

Shashank Singh, who was batting equally well, was on the strike with 22 off 10 balls. Shashank also made full use of opportunity given by his skipper and hit 23 runs in the last over with five fours, one double and a wide.
Shashank also revealed that Iyer had asked him to not worry about his hundred - "Let me be very honest - Shreyas, from ball one, said don't worry about my hundred," he told the presenters during innings break.
Shashank also finished at 44 not out off 16 balls with six fours and two sixes and was happy with his innings. He and Iyer added record 81 runs for the franchise for sixth wicket.
"Yes, it was a good cameo. But looking at Shreyas, that motivated me even more. I try and make sure I get the boundaries. When you go at that number, it's more likely that you'll not get a good hit. I know the shots I can back. I focus on my strengths rather than things which I can't do," he said.
Earlier, PBKS batter Priyansh Arya dazzled on his debut and scored 47 off just 23 balls as the team finished at 73/1 in the powerplay.

IPL 2025 | Battle of Kings vs Titans: Iyer’s Punjab takes on Gill’s Gujarat

Former IPL-winning captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/adam-gilchrist-0" rel="dofollow">Adam Gilchrist</a> has picked his orange cap contender for the 18th edition while backing the new leadership at Punjab Kings (PBKS) to change the team&rsquo;s fortune for good. Gilchrist won the IPL in 2009 with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers but failed to lead the Punjab side to glory during his stint. He, however, dropped ground-breaking revelations about how the management was erratic and acted like a handbrake when he led them.
"There&rsquo;s still the same ownership when I was the captain of that particular franchise, and it was somewhat erratic at times, and that might be the handbrake for them for a long while," the former PBKS captain Gilchrist said on the YouTube show Club Prairie Fire.

PBKS is among the only three IPL teams, alongside the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, to have never won a title.
Throwing weight behind this new pairing of Iyer and Ponting at PBKS, Gilchrist said considering they had worked previously, they know how to function in tandem, something that might click for the team.
&ldquo;I think the combination of Ricky Ponting and Shreyas Iyer will inspire that franchise. They have worked well together previously, and that&rsquo;s going to be the cohesive gel to bring their ownership together. But I think Ricky will settle the ship,&rdquo; Gilchrist added.
<h2>New orange cap winner</h2>
As accolades go, the player with the most runs gets the orange cap, while the purple cap is bestowed upon the highest wicket-taker. With the tournament already underway, Gilchrist picked his first choice for the orange cap holder, and without any surprises, it&rsquo;s PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer.
Considering the new-look PBKS side filled with plenty of match winners, Iyer is likely to bat at number three, a position Gilchrist feels will help stay among the runs.
&ldquo;Shreyas Iyer is going to be my Orange Cap wearer by the end of it. He is going to bat at number three. He has been talking about it and he is shifting up the order and taking on the leadership role for them,&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;
Besides his batting number, Iyer&rsquo;s credentials as a captain will benefit PBKS this season. Under Iyer&rsquo;s leadership, Kolkata Knight Riders won the title last season.&nbsp;
However, after both parties decided to mutually part ways, PBKS bagged Iyer&rsquo;s services for a whopping $3.1m (INR 26.75 crore) &ndash; the second-most expensive player in auction history.&nbsp;

IPL 2025: Gilchrist picks orange cap contender; backs Ponting-Iyer to change PBKS fortunes

Punjab Kings have ushered in a new chapter of their IPL journey, unveiling their revamped squad, coaching staff, and leadership under the guidance of head coach <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ricky-ponting">Ricky Ponting</a> and captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a>. Ahead of their opening match, team's CEO Satish Menon along with head coach Ricky Ponting and team captain Shreyas Iyer, laid out its vision for the upcoming season, expressing confidence in their squad composition and future prospects.
Ponting, who took over the coaching reins six months ago, emphasised the importance of rebuilding the team from the ground up. The franchise strategically retained just two young players ahead of the auction, enabling them to enter the bidding process with a substantial purse. This approach allowed Punjab Kings to acquire key Indian talents such as Arshdeep Singh and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/yuzvendra-chahal" rel="dofollow">Yuzvendra Chahal</a>, ensuring a robust mix of experience and youth.
&ldquo;We wanted to go into the auction with a clean slate, and I believe we have built an extremely balanced team. Our squad now consists of high-quality Indian players alongside strong overseas talent. The atmosphere in the camp is positive, and the players are motivated to give their best," said Ponting.

The appointment of Shreyas Iyer as captain was a pivotal decision for the franchise. Having previously worked with Iyer at Delhi Capitals, Ponting expressed his admiration for the batsman&rsquo;s leadership skills and winning mentality. &ldquo;Shreyas is an IPL-winning captain and one of the finest cricketers I have worked with. His presence will be instrumental in shaping our team&rsquo;s identity," Ponting added.
Iyer, confident in his approach, declared his preferred batting position at No. 3, indicating clarity in his role within the team. &ldquo;I am focusing on anchoring the innings at No. 3. It&rsquo;s a position I am comfortable with, and I believe I can contribute significantly from there," he said.
As the franchise gears up for IPL 2025, they face the challenge of improving their home record, which has been underwhelming in recent seasons. Ponting and Iyer both stressed the importance of turning their home ground into a fortress and establishing dominance. &ldquo;The past results don&rsquo;t matter. We have a fresh team and a fresh mindset. We will analyse conditions, understand what works best for our venue, and ensure we make it a tough place for visiting teams," opined Ponting.
<h2>'We will be dynamic and destructive'</h2>
Menon echoed the sentiment of building a strong Punjab identity within the team. With the inclusion of several local players, the franchise aims to resonate with its regional fanbase and create a distinct cultural bond. &ldquo;We are working on fostering a sense of togetherness within the squad. Having five Punjab players in the team adds to the local flavor and strengthens our identity. The camaraderie between players and the coaching staff is excellent," said Menon.
The franchise is also focused on expanding its fanbase, recognising that success on the field plays a crucial role in drawing support. &ldquo;Winning brings fans. We already have a dedicated following, but this season, we aim to increase our reach significantly," Menon hinted at upcoming initiatives to enhance engagement.
With pre-season training underway and practice matches lined up, Punjab Kings are determined to set the tone early. Their opening encounter against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad will be a significant test, and Ponting has assured fans that they will witness an aggressive, fearless brand of cricket. &ldquo;When we step onto the field, we will be dynamic, determined, and destructive. We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win," Ponting signed off.
As Punjab Kings embark on their renewed IPL journey, the anticipation among fans is palpable. With a fresh squad, strategic leadership, and a well-defined vision, the team looks poised for an exciting season ahead.

Sports, Cricket: The franchise strategically retained just two young players ahead of the auction, enabling them to enter the bidding process with a substantial purse

Punjab Kings have ushered in a new chapter of their IPL journey, unveiling their revamped squad, coaching staff, and leadership under the guidance of head coach Ricky Ponting and captain Shreyas Iyer. This approach allowed Punjab Kings to acquire key Indian talents such as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal, ensuring a robust mix of experience and youth. “We wanted to go into the auction with a clean slate, and I believe we have built an extremely balanced team. Our squad now consists of high-quality Indian players alongside strong overseas talent. The atmosphere in the camp is positive, and the players are motivated to give their best," said Ponting. IPL 2025 | 'We are here to entertain and, most importantly, to win', says PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting

Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a> recently shared a nostalgic memory from the inaugural edition of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/indian-premier-league">Indian Premier League</a> (IPL), when he was a ball boy at Wankhede Stadium during a match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). The young cricketer, who was playing for Mumbai's U-14 team at the time, got his first glimpse of IPL up close, an experience that left a lasting impact on him.
Speaking on &lsquo;Superstars&rsquo; programme, hosted by the digital broadcasters, Iyer recalled being a shy teenager but mustering the courage to interact with New Zealand&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ross-taylor">Ross Taylor</a>, who was playing for RCB.
"I grew up playing street cricket and was lucky to be a ball boy for that match. I remember being reserved while my friends approached players, but I decided to give it a try. Ross Taylor was one of my favourite players, so I went up to him and said, &lsquo;Sir, I am a big fan of yours.&rsquo; He was very sweet and thanked me. Back then, it was common for kids to ask for bats or gloves, but I was too shy, even though I really wanted to," he said.

<h2>'Memory has stayed with me over the years'</h2>
Iyer also fondly recalled meeting Punjab Kings' all-rounder&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/irfan-pathan">Irfan Pathan</a> during the same game. "I still remember Irfan Pathan standing at long-on. He sat with us and asked if we were enjoying the match. We told him we were having a great time. At that time, Irfan bhai was hugely popular, and Punjab Kings had some of the most good-looking boys, including Yuvi pa (<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/yuvraj-singh">Yuvraj Singh</a>). It&rsquo;s a memory that has stayed with me over the years," he added.
Since making his IPL debut in 2015, Iyer has made 3,127 runs at an average of 32.23 and a strike rate of 127.47, with 21 fifties. He was named the 'Emerging Player' in his debut season after scoring 439 runs for the Delhi Capitals. His leadership skills came to the fore in 2018 when he captained DC, guiding them to the 2020 finals. After moving to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022, he led them to their first title in a decade in 2024 under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir.
Now, as PBKS skipper, Iyer will aim to recreate his past successes when his team kicks off its 2025 campaign against the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 25.

IPL 2025: PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer recalls IPL debut as a ball boy, meeting Ross Taylor and Irfan Pathan

Former India batter and BCCI chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar isn't too happy with Shreyas Iyer despite his recent exploits in the Champions Trophy 2025. Iyer was India's highest and overall second highest run-scorer in the tournament with 243 runs in five innings including two fifties.
The former India batter, however, believes that Iyer should have batted throughout the innings in the final against New Zealand which India eventually won by four wickets. After three quick wickets, Iyer scored a handy 48 and was out with India needing 69 more runs to win.

&ldquo;Iyer did very well but I am not happy [with] the way he got out in the final. He should have continued till the very end and finished the game. But happy to see him realise his potential," Vengsarkar told PTI.
Iyer, who came to bat at number 4 throughout the tournament, was the bridge between top-order and lower-order and his contributions at crunch situations definitely helped India win the tournament.
Vengsarkar also pointed out his dislike for promoting Axar Patel ahead of wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul.
"KL too played a few important innings at number six but [I am] still not convinced [about] Axar Patel batting ahead of him at five. The left-hand right-hand combination could be the only reason," he said.
Rahul was clinical with the bat and remained not out three times out of four he batted. He went on to score 140 runs in four innings at an average of 140 and a strike of 98 with a highest of 42 not out - which came in the final.
Rahul was preferred over Pant despite the left-hand batter and wicketkeeper being India's first choice in T20 World Cup 2024 and on Australia tour prior to the Champions Trophy.
Rahul's exploits in ODI World Cup 2023 in absence of Pant, however, made him the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs.

'243 Runs in 5 Matches': Ex-India batter not happy with Shreyas Iyer despite stellar Champions Trophy performance

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has handpicked middle order batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer" rel="dofollow">Shreyas Iyer</a> as India&rsquo;s trump card for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> final against New Zealand in Dubai this Sunday. Ashwin, who announced his international retirement midway through BGT late last year, admitted Iyer&rsquo;s form has helped India in more than one way, with ace batter Virat Kohli excelling at number three because of him.
Iyer (at number four) has been the best thing that happened to Indian cricket in a long time. Although injuries ate a lot of his career in the beginning, with his tussle with the BCCI over disobeying orders adding fuel to the fire, his return to the ODI setup boosted India&rsquo;s chances of becoming the first team ever to win three Champions Trophy titles.

Iyer made merry during the home ODI World Cup a couple of years ago, scoring twin hundreds during the tournament, and even this time in Dubai, he hasn&rsquo;t let his guard down, delivering in almost every game for the Men in Blue. The right-handed batter has amassed 195 runs in four innings this time, with his handy knocks coming against Pakistan (group stage) and Australia in the crucial semis tie.
While against the arch-rivals, Iyer and Kohli stitched a 114-run stand for the third wicket, helping India complete the chase, they added 91 against the mighty Aussies in the semis, putting India in front to complete another win.&nbsp;
&ldquo;For me, the game-changer will be Shreyas Iyer. It is because of his recent form. This guy has had an excellent 2023 World Cup. He has batted well against New Zealand. He has played well at the Wankhede in Mumbai. And once again, in this tournament, he has looked crackerjack," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.
&ldquo;He has worked well on his short-ball game as well. Of course, he got out in the last game. But it shouldn&rsquo;t matter. I think this is Shreyas Iyer&rsquo;s biggest strength. He wants to get better at what he is not good at,&rdquo; Ashwin added.
<h2>How did it help Kohli?</h2>
Iyer&rsquo;s form (especially against the spin) strengthened India's chances to stay ahead in each game, as Kohli, who bats at number three, also benefitted from it. Ashwin explains how.

&ldquo;The way he (Iyer) plays, it helps Virat Kohli. There was a question with Gauti in the press conference. What was the conversation with Virat? Because he got out against a leg-spinner. Gauti gave an amazing answer. A guy has played 300 games. Obviously, he will get out. But apart from that, there is one thing: Virat Kohli is able to play the way he is playing because Shreyas Iyer is playing this way against spin."
&ldquo;So, the captains are in a catch-22 situation. There will be a partnership between Shreyas and Virat. When there is a partnership between Virat and Shreyas, the captains can&rsquo;t enforce a spin choke."&nbsp;
&ldquo;Shreyas is removing all the pressure from Virat. So, these two in the middle overs have forged a formidable pair. And for Virat&rsquo;s success, Shreyas Iyer has played a part in it. And for Shreyas&rsquo; success, Virat has a part in it. Because this is what people call playing in partnerships," Ashwin concluded.&nbsp;

Cricket, Sports: While Kohli has scored 217 runs in four matches this edition, his partner-in-crime Shreyas Iyer has amassed 195, scoring two fifties, the second-most in CT 2025.

IND vs NZ Champions Trophy final: Ashwin handpicks India’s trump card for Dubai showdown

As India is set to face off New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 on Sunday (Mar 9) in Dubai, Shreyas Iyer could be holding the key for Rohit Sharma-led team in the middle overs once again. Iyer has been sensational since 1 Jan 2023 in the middle over (batting at 4-6), scoring 1,100 runs at an average of 47.82 with a best of 128 not out and two hundreds.
He was part of both the ICC ODI tournaments which India reached in the final of - 2023 ODI World Cup and ongoing Champions Trophy. In both these tournaments combined, Iyer has played 15 games and scored 725 runs at an astonishing average of 60 with two hundreds and a best of 128 not out.

Iyer started the campaign with not much impact, scoring only 15 runs before getting out against Bangladesh, though India managed to chase down 229 easily. In the next game against Pakistan, Iyer, who scored 56, walked in with India at 100/2 and by the time he was done, India were just 30 runs away from the win.
In the next group stage match against New Zealand, he came in to bat when India were 22/2 and it soon became 30/3. The batter then added 98 runs for the fourth wicket with Axar Patel without losing the intent, despite a difficult pitch. After Axar was done, he added 44 runs with KL Rahul and was the fifth wicket to fall at 172, but made sure India stayed on course for a par-score. He contributed 79 runs in the match.
Come the semifinal against Australia, Iyer again walked in at 43/2 and added 91 runs for the third with Virat Kohli in a chase of 265 - his partnership with Kohli gave the team much-needed stability as India won the match by five wickets and cruised into the final.
With India's top three in sketchy form, Iyer will once again be in the spotlight during the final against the Kiwis in the repeat of the 2000 Champions Trophy title showdown.

'195 runs at 48.75': Shreyas Iyer will be point of difference in India vs New Zealand Champions Trophy Final

In a heartwarming gesture during India's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> practice session at the ICC Cricket Academy, top-order batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a> made net bowler Jaskiran Singh&rsquo;s day by gifting him a pair of spikes.
Jaskiran, a chartered accountant and passionate cricket enthusiast, was fielding at long-off when Iyer approached him and asked, "Paaji kya haal-chaal, sab badiya?" (Brother, how are you? Everything fine?). Moments later, Iyer inquired about his shoe size and handed him a brand-new pair of spikes.
"Shreyas bhai asked me my shoe size, and when I said 10, he told me, &lsquo;I've got something for you,&rsquo; and gave me these spikes. It really means a lot," Jaskiran was quoted saying to PTI Videos.

"I&rsquo;ve been with Team India since the first session, and today is the fourth. Shreyas bhai is always joyful on the field. Every time the ball comes to me, he's like, &lsquo;Catch it!&rsquo;" Jaskiran added.
Jaskiran also expressed his admiration for Rishabh Pant and hopes to bowl to him someday, saying, "I really look up to Pant because he&rsquo;s a lefty, and due to the natural angle, the ball will go away from him."

Sports, Cricket: Jaskiran was fielding at long-off when Iyer approached him and inquired about his shoe size and handed him a brand-new pair of spikes

In a heartwarming gesture during India's Champions Trophy practice session at the ICC Cricket Academy, top-order batter Shreyas Iyer made net bowler Jaskiran Singh’s day by gifting him a pair of spikes. "Shreyas bhai asked me my shoe size, and when I said 10, he told me, ‘I've got something for you,’ and gave me these spikes. It really means a lot," Jaskiran was quoted saying to PTI Videos. Champions Trophy 2025: Shreyas Iyer surprises net bowler with special gift-WATCH

India batter Shreyas Iyer isn't happy with the team's win against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy on Feb 23 in Dubai. Iyer, who scored a crucial 56 and added 114 runs for the third wicket with Virat Kohli, said that India could have won a bit earlier and played more aggressively.
&ldquo;I think we could have won a bit earlier, could have been a convincing win based on how the wicket was playing. It was initially coming on pretty well with the new ball and after that it was difficult to score runs when the ball got a bit old. But if we would have played more aggressively, we would have won a bit earlier, I felt,&rdquo; said Iyer at the post-match press conference.

India eventually won the match by six wickets and 45 balls remaining. The Rohit-led team, at one point, were looking to win by eight wickets when Kohli and Iyer were batting, but a couple of wickets slowed the game a bit.
Kohli eventually guided India to win with a four which also brought up his 100&mdash;a record-setting 51st in ODIs. Iyer was full of praise for Kohli and said that 'he never struggles for runs.'
&ldquo;I remember yesterday (Saturday) he had come almost an hour before us for the practice session. He played a few balls &hellip; he looked as crisp as he looks all the time. It's just the mindset that he possesses over the years. He's always hungry for runs. So, I never feel that he's struggling for runs, to be honest," said Iyer.
India, meanwhile, are almost through to the semis after winning both their matches. They play New Zealand on March 2.
After losing two consecutive matches, Pakistan are at the bottom of Group A points table. They now need Bangladesh and India to beat New Zealand as well as beat Bangladesh themselves to have a shot at making it to the semis of the tournament.

Champions Trophy, IND vs PAK: Shreyas Iyer not happy with India's win, says 'if we would have played more...'

Shubman Gill, even while batting at 60 per cent, is a complete batter, indicating his longevity across all formats; however, Shreyas Iyer isn&rsquo;t there yet, per cricketer-turned-broadcaster Sanjay Manjrekar. His remarks have come after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-2025-shubman-gill-rates-dubai-hundred-against-bangladesh-his-most-satisfying-innings-8741418" rel="dofollow">Gill hit his maiden ICC tournament hundred against Bangladesh</a> in India&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy" rel="dofollow">Champions Trophy 2025</a> opener in Dubai, helping the Men in Blue win by six wickets.
While Gill, alongside seamer <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/champions-trophy-ind-vs-ban-most-wickets-in-icc-tournament-for-india-shami-60-zaheer-59-srinath-47-jadeja-43-bumrah-42-kumble-42-8740747" rel="dofollow">Mohammed Shami</a>, made headlines for his match-winning performance against the Tigers, Iyer&rsquo;s loose stroke cost him his wicket on 15 (while chasing), disappointing the fans and Manjrekar.&nbsp;

Noting the difference between the two batters, Sanjay said, unlike Iyer, Gill will take the game right till the end and win it for his team; but even though Iyer is as talented as anyone on the side, he doesn&rsquo;t give that impression.
"He [Gill] is batting at the right position to make a huge impact. When he gets a hundred, like today, it seems like there is plenty left in the tank," Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo Match Day.&nbsp;
"It was like 60% of Shubman Gill is enough to get a hundred like this and he stays till the end. That is the difference between Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill that Gill will take you right till the end. He is somebody who you think is going to be around for 10-15 years. Shreyas Iyer, despite his obvious talent, doesn't give you that impression,&rdquo; he continued.&nbsp;
Gill scored an unbeaten 101 off 129 balls against Bangladesh, hitting nine fours and two sixes, one of which was hit off pacer Tanzim Hasan in the ninth over, which went straight into the second tier at deep-midwicket.
"Some of the shots he played - the good-length ball he hit, and it went into second tier&hellip; the big game is at his beck and call," Manjrekar said.&nbsp;
"Can he be better in 50-over cricket as a batter? I don't think so, what can be better than this?" Manjrekar noted.
<h2>&lsquo;India is blessed&rsquo;</h2>
While Gill scored quickly inside the Powerplay, hitting 26 off 23 balls, he put brakes on his scoring rate just when Bangladesh introduced the spinners to the attack, completing his fifty in 69 balls &ndash; his slowest ever. The right-handed batter hit odd fours but kept rotating the strike, helping India inch closer to the win. He eventually scored his hundred off 125 balls, his slowest thus far, but his ability to change gears impressed Manjrekar.
"He's got the class to do it [change gears]. India are blessed with [a top three] who are also Test batters, so they can play different gears. Yashasvi Jaiswal, when he comes in eventually, is also a Test batter.&nbsp;
&ldquo;So, if the ball is swinging around in overseas conditions, they have the ability to see the new ball through and then handle the various situations. Shubman Gill is that kind of a player; he is not one-dimensional; he has all the gears, and we saw him do that today as well.&nbsp;
&ldquo;He is a guy at the top of his 50-over-cricket prowess, and he does it very calmly. There is an air of dominance and surety with the way he bats and finishes games,&rdquo; Manjrekar added.&nbsp;

India captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit-sharma">Rohit Sharma</a> returned to form in emphatic style, smashing his 32nd ODI century in a commanding four-wicket victory over England at the Barabati Stadium. His masterful 119 off 90 balls, featuring 12 fours and seven sixes, played a crucial role in India&rsquo;s successful chase of 305, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
Reflecting on his innings, Rohit credited a strategic approach to his batting.

ODIs are longer than T20s but shorter than Tests, so I wanted to structure my innings accordingly. My focus was to bat deep,&rdquo; Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
Assessing the pitch conditions, Rohit noted that the black soil surface made the ball skid on, requiring a measured approach initially. &ldquo;They bowled into the body and kept it on the stumps, so I prepared my plan accordingly and focused on finding the gaps.&rdquo;
Before this match in Cuttack, questions had been raised about Rohit&rsquo;s recent lean patch and his form leading up to the Champions Trophy later this month. However, he dispelled any doubts in style, racing to a half-century in 30 balls and bringing up his hundred in just 76 deliveries. He also acknowledged the crucial partnerships he built&mdash;136 runs with Shubman Gill (60) and 70 runs with Shreyas Iyer (44).
&ldquo;I got great support from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shubhman-gill">Gill</a> and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas</a>. I love batting with Gill&mdash;he&rsquo;s a classy player who never seems overawed by the situation. His numbers speak for themselves,&rdquo; Rohit added.
On the bowling front, Ravindra Jadeja starred with 3-35, while debutant Varun Chakravarthy impressed with 1-54. Rohit highlighted the significance of India&rsquo;s middle-overs bowling.
<h2>'Middle overs are crucial'</h2>
&ldquo;The middle overs are crucial&mdash;that&rsquo;s where the game can shift. If you control that phase, you don&rsquo;t have to worry much about the death overs. We did it well in Nagpur, squeezing them and taking wickets, which made run-scoring difficult for them.&rdquo;
With the final match in Ahmedabad now a dead rubber, Rohit emphasised India&rsquo;s continued focus on overall improvement.
&ldquo;We want to keep getting better as individuals and as a team. There&rsquo;s nothing specific to work on, but as long as the players are clear about their roles and keep executing them, we are on the right path,&rdquo; he concluded.

IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Broke it down to pieces about how I wanted to bat, says Rohit after hitting 32nd century

The ace Indian batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli" rel="dofollow">Virat Kohli</a> will return to the playing XI for the second ODI against England in Cuttack on Sunday. After missing the series opener in Nagpur with a sore right knee, Kohli hit the nets on Saturday at the Barabati Stadium in Odisha, a section of which was open for the fans to visit for free. Though that strategy was hit, with a sea of Virat fans storming into the stands, Kohli&rsquo;s net session indicated his return remains imminent.

With Virat set to return to the Indian team for the first time since the SCG Test Down Under, someone has to make way for him.
Who would it be? Would India sit Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made his ODI debut in Nagpur, and instead make vice-captain Shubman Gill play at the top with the captain Rohit Shamra, or sit out Shreyas Iyer, who played a handy role in helping India draw first blood in the series.
Iyer returned to the Indian Team with a match-winning fifty in Nagpur, hitting 59 off 36 balls, including two sixes and nine fours. He upped the ante after India lost two early wickets, with both openers returning to the hut inside six overs. Though his dismissal saw Axar Patel coming ahead of KL Rahul, indicating the team&rsquo;s strategy of working on the left-right combination, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak kept mum on who would sit out when Kohli returns to the playing XI.
&ldquo;Virat Kohli is fit to play. He has come for practice and is good to go," Sitanshu Kotak said during the pre-match media interaction.
"I think that's what the head coach and captain can talk about. But yes, definitely a lefty-righty combination is there. But I would say that question is not something, which I would like to answer, to be very honest," Kotak noted when asked who is most likely to sit out between Iyer and Jaiswal for the second ODI.

IND vs ENG 2nd ODI: Iyer or Jaiswal, who sits out when Kohli returns to playing XI in Cuttack?

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Punjab Kings' head coach Ricky Ponting has revealed that India batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a>, pacer Arshdeep Singh and spinner Yuzvendra Chahal were non-negotiable for him. Ponting, who shifted base from Delhi to Punjab this season, managed to get all three players in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/ipl-mega-auction-2024-list-of-most-expensive-players-sold-778836">IPL mega auction</a> which took place in November 2024.
"There were three players that I wanted to bring in. One who has been at Punjab Kings for three or four years&mdash;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/arshdeep-singh">Arshdeep Singh</a>. I also wanted to bring in a captain who I have worked with before and who has had a lot of success. So, we went after Shreyas Iyer. I also wanted to bring in Yuzi. So the Indian guys that we have are perfect,&rdquo; Ponting said in a release shared by Punjab Kings.

&ldquo;And then, we had to make a few tweaks as the auction went on to make sure we ended up with a really good squad. I am trying to make things different and rebuild and have the right people around me. But these three were non-negotiables," the former Aussie skipper added.
Punjab bought Iyer for a whopping INR 23.75 crore ($2.83 million approx) and Chahal for INR 18 crore ($2.2 million approx) - making him the most expensive spinner in IPL history. Arshdeep, meanwhile, was retained ahead of the mega auction for the same price as Chahal.

Shreyas Iyer, after being included in the playing XI on Thursday (Feb 6) against England at the very last minute, scored a match-winning 59 off 36 balls.
Iyer came in to bat at number four and added 94 runs with Shubman Gill for the third wicket before being trapped LBW by Jacob Bethell on the last ball of the 16th over.
The partnership, however, laid the groundwork for India's chase after two quick wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal and skipper Rohit Sharma. Both the openers were back in the hut inside six overs with just 19 runs on the board in the chase of 248.
After Iyer's dismissal, Gill (87) and Axar Patel (52) added 108 runs for the fourth wicket as India reached the target in the 37th over with four wickets in hand.

Earlier, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision was proved right as the openers added 50 runs in just the first six overs. Salt and Duckett were looking good after adding 75 runs for the first wicket before three wickets fell for two runs in nine balls, derailing the innings.
For India, skipper Rohit Sharma said at the toss that they would have bowled first anyway. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Harshit Rana made their debuts for India, while star batter <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/virat-kohli">Virat Kohli</a> missed out.
"Jaiswal and Rana make their debut, unfortunately Kohli not playing, a right knee problem that happened last night," said Rohit at the toss.
As of now, there's no further update on the exact nature of Kohli's injury. He's believed to have picked it up during the net session on Wednesday (Feb 5).
Kohli recently played in the domestic Ranji Trophy for Delhi but failed there as well. The India batter, playing in the Ranji Trophy after 13 years, made only six runs before being bowled.
If the injury to Kohli, considered one of the modern greats, is serious, it could be a setback for India in the Champions Trophy that is set to begin on February 19.

Amid rumours of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shreyas-iyer">Shreyas Iyer</a> leading <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/kkr">KKR</a>&rsquo;s retention race ahead of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/ipl">IPL 2025</a> auction late last year, the India international and the IPL 2024 champions parted ways, with KKR opting to retain six players but Iyer. The middle-order batter helped Kolkata Knight Riders win their third IPL title, beating SunRisers Hyderabad in the finale.
Fast-forward to January 2025, Iyer is named the new captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS), with the IPL franchise splurging $3.09mn (INR 26.75 crore) &ndash; a record price in the auction history. Although he held the record of the most expensive player ever (for a few minutes), LSG bagging Rishabh Pant for a whopping $3.11m (INR 27 crore) surpassed his figures.

Meanwhile, for the first time since parting ways with KKR, for whom he played two seasons (2022-2204), missing the 2023 edition with an injury, Iyer broke his silence on what happened behind the scenes. Dismissing reports of him seeking more money being the reason behind KKR&rsquo;s call, Iyer said &lsquo;lack of communication&rsquo; led to the fallout between them.

Iyer didn&rsquo;t mince his words to admit that he expected KKR to act quickly and not take until one week before the retention date to discuss the future. The star India batter said he had to take a call, and what happened afterwards was perhaps written in the stars.
"Yes, obviously disappointed because when you don&rsquo;t have a certain line of communication and if you get to know things one week prior to the retention date, then obviously something is lacking over there. So I had to take a call. Whatever is written is supposed to happen," he added.

"He needs to get his work ethics right, and if he does that, the sky is the limit for him," Iyer said as reported by the cricket news website ESPNCricinfo.

"We can't babysit anyone, right? Every professional who is playing at this level, they need to know what they should be doing," Iyer said. "And he has also done it in the past; it's not that he hasn't. He has to focus, he has to sit back, [and] put a thinking cap on, and then figure out himself. He will get the answer by himself," he added.
Shaw's downfall has been a topic of conversation in recent times, with the most notable event being Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals dropping him in the IPL mega auction 2025 in November last month.
The 25-year-old had made his India debut six years ago in 2018 and scored a ton against the West Indies just before turning 19 in the same year. He has since played four more Tests only, the last of which came in 2020. In the five Tests, Shaw scored 339 runs at an average of 42, out of which 134 came in his debut innings.
The batter has also played six ODIs and scored 189 runs, with 49 being his highest individual score. In the lone T20I for India, Shaw got out on a duck. The T20I in July 2021 was his last game in the India shirt.
In the SMAT, Shaw scored 197 runs in nine innings without scoring a fifty, with 49 being the highest. He scored those runs at a strike rate of 156.34, hitting 21 fours and 13 sixes.

<h2>Indian players top the shopping list</h2>

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins were the two most expensive purchases in the IPL 2024 mini-auction, but that was not the case this time. All 10 franchises were focused on bringing in Indian names, highlighting the value of homegrown talent. With Pant leading the charge, no foreign player features in the top five most expensive players bought in the IPL 2025 auction. Shreyas Iyer was sold for INR 260.75mn ($3.1mn) to Punjab Kings, followed by Venkatesh Iyer, who returned to Kolkata Knight Riders for 237.75mn ($2.8mn).

<h2>Franchises not keen on aging players</h2>

Despite having a tremendous sum in their pocket, no franchise was interested in getting players at the wrong end of the aging scale. Steve Smith, David Warner, and James Anderson were some big names that went unsold in the mega auction. Interestingly, India’s Shardul Thakur also featured on the list, which came as a huge surprise for many.

<h2>Uncapped Vaibhav Suryavanshi headlines auction</h2>

At just 13, uncapped Vaibhav Suryavanshi raised keen interest on day two of the auction after he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for INR 11mn ($130,000). He became the youngest player ever to be bought in an IPL auction, breaking another record. Suryavanshi hails from Bihar and is one of the young prospects with high expectations.

<h2>Teams remain cautious on squad depth</h2>

All franchises went big in the auction but still retained some amount to address injury issues in the squad. Not all amount was spent by all franchises giving them the edge of purchasing another player in case someone pulls out or is not available due to international duty or injury. Franchise owners could go for uncapped and unsold players from the auction if they still have funds to strengthen their squads.
