Day 1 at Lord’s was all about the bowlers, with 14 wickets falling in a gripping start to the match. Kagiso Rabada led the way for South Africa with an excellent five-wicket haul, while Marco Jansen supported well with 3 for 49. Australia had looked steady at one point thanks to fifties from Steve Smith and Beau Webster, but a sudden collapse after tea saw them lose five wickets for just 20 runs, ending their innings at 212.

In reply, Mitchell Starc sparked an Australian comeback. He struck twice early and with help from fellow pacers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. After a stead first session on second day for South Africa, where they added 78 runs for one wicket, Australia were back at their best.

Skipper Cummins struck early in the second session with two wickets in an over. South Africa could not overcome the double blows and were folded out for a paltry 138 in the first innings and conceded a 74-run lead.

Cummins finished with a six-for and reached 300 Test wickets as well.

Here's what the rule says Australia’s fast bowlers were accurate and consistent, even though South Africa showed more intent on Day 2. They hadn’t managed to build a big lead. Bavuma had put together a strong stand with David Bedingham, but in the 40th over he went for a stylish cover drive. The shot had decent timing, but it wasn’t placed well. Labuschagne at short cover, reacted quickly, dived to his right, and pulled off a stunning catch. Check the video below:

South Africa take first session at Lord's Chasing their first ICC trophy, South Africa won the toss and skipper Temba Bavuma invited Australia to bat first in overcast conditions. South Africa pacers responded to captain's decision and bowled brilliant opening spell. It was Kagiso Rabada who broke through first and did so in some style. The Proteas pace spearhead sent back Usman Khawaja for a 20-ball duck before cleaning up returning all-rounder Cameron Green three balls later in the same over. Makeshift opener Marnus Labuschagne then added 30 runs with Smith before falling to a perfectly executed plan by Marco Jansen. At the stroke of lunch on day 1, Jansen struck again and took out dangerous Travis Head as Australia returned to dressing room at 67/4.

Australia have handed a maiden ODI call-up to star all-rounder Tim David as he will fill the void left by Glenn Maxwell in the upcoming South Africa series. David, who scored a match-winning 64-run knock against the Proteas in the first T20I in Durban on Wednesday, August 30 will now look forward to a new challenge. However, it is unlikely that David would make the ODI World Cup squad if Maxwell makes his return to the side.

"Tim is already here for the T20 series which offers an opportunity to see how his game can translate to the one-day format. He will provide an extra option for us in that power role at the back end of an innings," selector Tony Dodemaide said.

David has been capped by the Aussie national side in the T20Is after switching international alliance from Singapore. He has so far played 26 T20Is, including Wednesday’s encounter, while he has been capped only 16 times in the List A format. However, his experience in franchise cricket all over the globe has been vital.

"The great thing about Tim is he's very level-headed. He knows his role in T20 cricket can be inconsistent. But his ability to win us matches is why he's in this team. We've got full faith. I want him to play however he wants to play every game. I know that if he does that, he'll win us games. He's an outstanding asset for Australian cricket," Australia’s stand-in skipper Mitchell Marsh said.

SA vs AUS ODI Series: Tim David earns 50-over call-up after impressing in T20Is, to fill in for Glenn Maxwell

Young spinner Tanveer Sangha showcased his prowess against South Africa as Australia went 1-0 up in the three-match T20I series in style in Durban on Wednesday.

His bowling figure of 4-31 was the best for a player making his debut for Australia.

His spin magic made short work of hosts South Africa as Australia cruised comfortably towards a thumping 111-run victory.

Australia set a massive target of 227 for the hosts with skipper Mitchell Marsh playing a captain's role and powering the visitors to the gigantic total with his unbeaten 92(49)*.

Tim David's knock of 68 off 24 balls was also vital in powering the Baggy Greens to the mammoth total.

While chasing the target, the hosts were dealt with an early blow with Marcus Stoinis sending Temba back on the final ball of the first over.

Rassie van der Dussen and Reeza Hendricks stitched up a 46-run partnership to get the Proteas back in the high-chase battle.

But once the right-arm pacer Sean Abbott sent Dussen back to the dugout, Sangha, who was the surprise selection in the squad, inflicted mayhem.

His legbreak style of bowling broke South Africa's backbone with skipper Aiden Markram (7), Dewald Brevis (5) and Tristan Stubbs (0) failing to face the new challenge that was in front of them.

Marco Jansen came in and became the third batter for South Africa to cross the double digits, but once again Sangha showed his potential by claiming his wicket.

Marcus Stoinis and Spencer Johnson returned to the attack and struck the final blow as South Africa were bundled out for 115.

Reeza Hendricks was the only player who was able to deal with the Australian bowling attack.

He stayed till the 16th over looking to take the hosts to a respectable score, but Johnson denied him that opportunity.

Earlier in the innings, Australia, who held the record of scoring the most runs in the powerplay, broke their own record as the opening order plundered 70 runs in the first six overs, making the Proteas bowlers toil hard.

Once the onslaught began, South African bowlers started spraying deliveries all over the pitch.

Marsh and David defined modern-day batting with their aggressive yet subtle shot technique to make the hosts run all over the field to chase the ball.

Temba Bavuma, South Africa's captain, said that matches against Australia have always been full of fire for his side and that they would have a tough challenge in the T20 World Cup on Saturday. He went on to say that because Saturday's encounter at Sheikh Zayed Stadium is their tournament opener, they are eager to get off to a good start and get an early advantage.

In the pre-match press conference on Friday, Bavuma remarked, "Matches or clashes against Australia have always been full of fire, and we don't expect it to be anything different tomorrow. Tomorrow being an opener for us, it's obviously a big game. We want to start off well. We want to hit the ground running and start to get that momentum rolling in our favour. But the guys, I believe, are in a good space."

"I must be honest, there is a bit of anxiety amongst the guys, there is a bit of butterflies, and I think that's something that's expected. In terms of coming up against Australia, there's no motivation, no bigger motivation for the guys," added Bavuma.

Bavuma and left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi have both confirmed their availability for Saturday's opener. "On my side, the fitness is good. I obviously managed to get through the two games unscathed. The hand held up nicely, so I'm all good to go. Shamsi as well, I understand that he's also good to go. He did pass his fitness test today. So he`s good. I`m good as well."

South Africa's batting, particularly the middle order, according to Bavuma, must put up a strong fight against Australia's bowlers. He also stated that his bowlers will want to dismiss the Australian top-order as fast as possible.

"Obviously, their bowling attack is quite strong. I think having played them in the past, their type of team they look to strike upfront, really try to get into that middle-order. So I think from our point of view with the bat, we want to make sure we play there powerful as well as we can so we don't allow them to kind of get into our middle-order with their slow bowlers."

"With the bat, I think they're quite top-heavy. Guys like Finch, guys like Warner, Smith at the top. So we're also obviously looking to strike upfront and put their middle batters under pressure. The earlier we can get those guys in, I feel the more we can put them under pressure. But I think their side, they've got good resources, fast bowling, slow bowling, as well as from a batting point of view. So I think it will be a good encounter."

The 31-year-old had slow innings in the warm-up matches against Afghanistan and Pakistan, batting 31 off 39 balls and 46 off 42 balls, respectively, after recovering from a thumb fracture sustained during the white-ball series against Sri Lanka.

When asked about it, Bavuma replied, "I think from my side, not having played cricket for quite a while, that probably contributed to that. I think it was also adjusting to the conditions and I guess trying to formulate a game plan that was also part of that. I think probably being out of the game for quite a while, that was probably the main contributor."

Talking about the importance of starting off big tournaments on a winning note, Bavuma remarked, "It's always good to start off well. You want to throw that first punch in early on and try to ride with that momentum as much as you can. I think the way the tournament is also set up with only five games in the group stages, you don't really have time to be behind the eight ball. We`ll be looking to really hit the ground running. Tomorrow (we will) play our best cricket and take it from there."

When asked about it, Bavuma replied, "I think from my side, not having played cricket for quite a while, that probably contributed to that. I think it was also adjusting to the conditions and I guess trying to formulate a game plan that was also part of that. I think probably being out of the game for quite a while, that was probably the main contributor." Talking about the importance of starting off big tournaments on a winning note, Bavuma remarked, "It's always good to start off well.

T20 WC: Matches against Australia have always been full of fire, says South African captain Temba Bavuma

Aaron Finch-led Australia will take on Temba Bavuma's South Africa in the opening match of the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Saturday (October 23). Both Australia and South Africa have been heavyweights in Tests and ODIs, however, they are yet to dominate the shortest format.

Over the years, the two teams have produced some thrilling encounters between them and have gotten the better of each other on several occasions. They are placed in Group 1 along with the likes of West Indies, England and Bangladesh. Both teams will be looking to get off to a winning start and get the advantage in the race for the semi-finals.

For Australia, the form of the likes of David Warner and skipper Finch will be a concern. While Finch played his last T20I game in July this year and did not feature in IPL 2021, Warner endured a poor run in the IPL and could only manage eight appearances throughout the season.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh will also be making his comeback after a long period of inactivity. Australia's chances will depend on the performances of all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis who possess the ability to change the course of a game with both the bat and the ball.

On the other hand, South Africa skipper Bavuma returned to the playing XI after a gap of 50 days when he featured in the practice game against Pakistan on Wednesday where he scored 46 off 42 balls. Rassie van der Dussen played a brilliant knock of unbeaten 101 off 51 balls and was the stand out performer for the Proteas. He will be looking to carry his purple patch against the Aussies on Saturday.
