Russia struck the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with its most powerful barrage of missiles and drones since spring. Every gain on the battle field at this moment is being made at a terrible cost. The Ukrainian counteroffensive which has been sluggish since its inception has made very incremental gains. Kyiv claims to have captured the strategic village of Robotyne and its intention is to make its ways towards Melitopol to break Russia's land corridor to Crimea.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited the&nbsp;Ukrainian capital Kyiv on a day when Russia was accused of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/zelensky-claims-russian-strike-kills-at-least-16-in-east-ukraine-market-632988">attacking a market town in the contested Donetsk region</a> which Russia claims to have taken over from Ukrainian control. Blinken's visit comes&nbsp;during Ukraine's ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces which has failed to give required dividends.

In Kyiv's corridors of power, Blinken's visit attained significance after the head of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council&nbsp;Aleksey Danilov claimed that&nbsp;a third world war is already underway.

"If somebody thinks that World War III hasn’t started then it’s a huge mistake. It has already begun. It had been underway in a hybrid period for some time and has now entered an active phase," he said at the Kiev Security Forum on Tuesday, September 5.&nbsp;

<h2>Blinken's Ukraine visit: What is expected?</h2>

During his two-day stay, Blinken is expected to unveil a new US wartime aid package of at least $1 billion, according to a senior state department official cited by Reuters.

Blinken engaged in discussions with foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba and had a meeting scheduled with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed skepticism about US aid impacting Russia's offensive.

Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska for the first time opened up about how the Russian war has impacted their family emotionally.

In an interview with BBC, Zelenska said that she had been living apart from her husband, Volodymyr Zelensky, for more than a year due to security threats arising out of the ongoing conflict and added that it has taken a toll on her family.

"This may be a bit selfish, but I need my husband, not a historical figure, by my side," she told BBC in an interview posted online Tuesday morning (Sept 5).

"But we stay strong, we have strength both emotionally and physically. And I am sure we will handle it together," she added.

She spent the initial months of the Russian invasion hiding in secret locations with her children.

<h2>Separated for more than a year</h2>

Zelenska described the first critical days as "a constant feeling of adrenaline" before she forced herself to accept "the existing conditions."

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Volodymyr Zelensky’s movements have been kept as secret.

"We don't live together with my husband, the family is separated," Zelenska said.&nbsp;

"We have the opportunity to see each other but not as often as we would like. My son misses his father."

She said that the uncertainty of the war has cost her family dearly.

<h2>'My children miss him'</h2>

‘It pains me to watch that my kids don’t plan anything. At such an age, young people. My daughter is 19. They dream of travelling, of new sensations, emotions. She does not have such an opportunity,’ she was quoted as saying.

Zelenska met her husband in high school. Both of them later worked together in a comedy troupe and TV studio, with him as an actor and her as a scriptwriter.

Now, she says that she never dreamt of her husband becoming the "historical figure" he is today, adding that she has missed him and needed him to stand by her side as her husband.

Though she acknowledges that her feelings are nothing but a "selfish" longing, Zelenska said the president "really does have the energy, the will power, inspiration, and stubbornness to go through this war."

‘I need my husband’: Ukraine’s First Lady Olena Zelenska opens up on impact of war on family

The southern Odesa port region in Ukraine witnessed fresh flare-ups overnight after Russia launched its second attack in two nights in ports, damaging warehouses, production buildings and industrial enterprises.

Governor of Odesa Oleg Kiper on Monday (Sept 4) said that Moscow launched drone attacks on the city which lasted for more than three hours.

The Ukrainian Air Force retaliated and shot down 17 drones, Oleg Kiper wrote on Telegram, adding, "But, unfortunately, there are also hits. In several settlements of Izmail district, warehouses and production buildings, agricultural machinery and equipment of industrial enterprises were damaged."

<h2>Civilians told to remain indoors</h2>

Several fires also broke out in civilian residences due to falling debris, he said, but they had since been put out. There were no deaths or injuries.

Odesa is one of Ukraine’s two major grain-exporting ports on the Danube River in the south of the region.

The Ukrainian ports, which export around a quarter of the world’s grain demands, have been increasingly subjected to Russian attacks ever since President Vladimir Putin pulled out of the deal brokered by the UN and Turkey that had allowed Kyiv to export its grain via its Black Sea ports.

This is the second attack in two nights. A day earlier, Russia attacked the Danube port of Reni. The defence ministry in Moscow said the drones had struck fuel depots used by the Ukrainian military.

Ukraine reports fresh attacks on Odesa port region hours before Putin-Erdogan meet

A dramatic moment was captured in video footage when a Ukrainian drone smartly managed to dodge three Russian military aircraft that tried to shoot it down.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine shared the video in which the drone was seen coming in close contact with one Russian jet and two combat helicopters. What followed was the ultimate chasing sequence between a tiny drone and the heavily fortified aircraft.

In the video, the drone which is just metres away from the Russian air forces can be seen teasing it before a spray of bullets is unleashed towards it by one of the aircraft.

Watch: Ukrainian drone dramatically dodges attack by three Russian aircraft

In an attempt to cement their authority in the occupied regions, Russian authorities on Thursday (August 31) began holding elections in parts of&nbsp;Moscow-annexed Ukrainian territories. Russia currently controls one-fifth of Ukraine's territory: the Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014, and parts of&nbsp;Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions annexed in 2022.

Moscow's handpicked governors, which include veteran pro-Russian politicians and others known only locally, are currently seeking full terms of office in the four regions. The polls will conclude on September 10, when Russia holds regional polls, according to a Reuters report.&nbsp;&nbsp;

All governors have the endorsement of President Vladimir Putin after joining the Kremlin's United Russia bloc with fanfare in recent months. Consequently, most are facing only nominal opposition.&nbsp;

Kyiv has condemned the move and urged the citizens living in the "occupied areas" to not vote in the election, adding they should "leave the region" if possible.

"Russians have started holding 'elections' to pseudo-local councils and 'legislative bodies' in the temporarily occupied territories," Ukraine's National Resistance Centre (NRC), an official agency, was quoted as saying by CNN.&nbsp;

“We urge Ukrainians not to open their doors to the occupiers and, if possible, to leave the region or their homes for the period of 'early voting'," added NRC.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov slammed the West saying Moscow will not cooperate with the bloc in areas on which its security depends.

“Even if suddenly, by some incomprehensible command from above, the West offers us to return to more or less normal contacts, we will already think whether we should do this, and if so, in what areas,” said Lavrov.&nbsp;

“We will not agree to interact with the West, on which our security depends in every sense: military-political security, economic, technological,” he added.&nbsp;

<h2>The war extends&nbsp;</h2>

The Rusia-Ukraine war began last year in February and has dragged on for over 500 days with thousands of casualties and billions in damages. Despite Kyiv initiating a counteroffensive earlier this year, not much has changed on the ground.&nbsp;

After weeks of grinding combat, Kyiv is hoping for a major breakthrough in the Zaporizhzhia region after recapturing the village of Robotyne this week.

Ukraine has intensified drone strikes deep inside Russian territory. On Wednesday, Ukraine launched its biggest drone raid across six regions of Russia. As the war appears to hit a stalemate, the desperation behind the drone attacks becomes evident. Russian forces maintain a firm grip on Ukrainian territory despite Ukraine's counteroffensive. Ukraine is struggling to break through Russian defences. Is this a mere deflection tactic, or does it serve to ensure the continuous flow of Western aid? Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Hidden cost of Russia-Ukraine war: Children losing out on education, warns UNICEF

Russian President Vladimir Putin has no plans to attend Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's funeral, said Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday (August 29) while talking to reporters.

<h2>"Not envisaged"</h2>

When asked about Putin's attendance at the last rites of Prigozhin, Peskov, as per an AFP report, said, "The presence of the president is not envisaged."&nbsp;

He also said that the Kremlin did not have any specific information about the mercenary leader's funeral and that the arrangements were up to the family.

Amid doubts about Prigozhin's presence on the plane, on Sunday, genetic tests confirmed that the Wagner chief was in fact among the 10 people killed in the plane crash near Moscow.

"Molecular-genetic examinations have been completed as part of the investigation into the plane crash in the Tver region," said Russia's Investigative Committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko.

"According to their results, the identities of all 10 victims were established, they correspond to the list stated in the flight list," she added.

As per AFP, they took control of the southern city of Rostov and advanced towards Moscow before turning back some 200 km (125 miles) from the capital.

The soon-aborted armed revolt was described as "treachery" by Putin. However, later a deal was struck that gave the Wagner mercenaries the option to join the Russian army or go to Moscow's ally Belarus.

Vladimir Putin won't attend Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's funeral: Kremlin

Russia on Friday announced that it has recovered 10 bodies and flight recorders from the scene of the plane crash that is presumed to have killed Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin.

Investigators are now carrying out "molecular-genetic tests" on the remains.

<h2>The need for such a test</h2>

As per the passenger list, Prigozhin and his right-hand man Dmitry Utkin, as well as five other passengers and three crew members, were on board of the Embraer Legacy 600 jet, when it crashed in the Tver region, north-west of the Russian capital Moscow on Wednesday.

However, in spite of the flight manifest, there have been questions over whether the Kremlin had absolute confirmation that the Wagner chief was in fact on board the aircraft.

To "establish their (passengers) identities" Russia's Investigative Committee said it was carrying out "molecular genetic analyses".

Speaking to the BBC over a conference call that included journalists from other publications, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said there were "lots of speculation" around the "tragic" deaths of the 10 people in Wednesday's air crash near Moscow.

"In the West, of course, this speculation comes from a certain angle. It's all a complete lie," he said, adding, "We don't have many facts at the moment, the facts need to be clarified during the official investigation which is being carried out now."

<h2>Putin denies ordering the killing</h2>

Talking to BBC on Friday, the Russian President Vladimir Putin denied giving the order for Prigozhin's assassination and labelled the rumours a "complete lie."

Since the plane came down, there has been a frenzied speculation about what caused the crash. However, the exact cause is still not known. The Kremlin has announced that it has opened a probe into alleged violations of air traffic rules by the aircraft, but has maintained its silence otherwise, reports AFP. Meanwhile, on Friday, US President Joe Biden said that his nation was trying to "nail down" precisely what brought down the plane.

Uncertainty persists over Wagner chief's death, Russia to conduct molecular genetic test on remains from crash

Anyone who crosses Putin either dies or disappears, or is jailed. The Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has died in a plane crash. This comes 2 months after Wagner led an unsuccessful mutiny against Putin's aide. Why did Putin wait so long to strike?

How did the Wagner chief die?

"For Christ's sake, guys, take me and finish me already," said Yevgeny Prigozhin in an interview as his stand-off with Russian military leadership and President Vladimir Putin escalated in the spring this year.

"What will be, will be," he added, as per an interview excerpt making the rounds. According to preliminary US government assessments, what happened was an assassination plot that took out the thorn in Putin's side.&nbsp;

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reports that as per US officials, while it looks like an assassination angle was behind Prigozhin's death, contrary to earlier speculation, the Wagner chief's aircraft doesn't appear to have been shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

<h2>Who, or what, killed Yevgeny Prigozhin?</h2>

As per WSJ, preliminary US government assessments, which are incomplete, suggest that sabotage or a bomb that exploded on the aircraft was behind the crash.

Previously, social media channels close to the mercenary chief claimed that the aircraft carrying Prigozhin was downed by a Russian military anti-aircraft missile.

The Kremlin is yet to offer an explanation for the aircraft crash that happened northwest of Moscow but said that it was conducting an investigation. Russia’s Investigative Committee has reportedly launched a criminal probe into alleged violations of air safety rules. However, official information on the crash or its causes remains scant.

As per LBC, a UK-based publication, relatives of 39-year-old Kristina Raspopova, a flight attendant on board the aircraft who also died, have revealed that the flight was delayed due to "maintenance or some urgent repairs".

Talking to Sky News, former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele said that in an "ironic" twist, there are suggestions that a bomb in a wine crate may be behind the explosion and the subsequent crash.

"That's a kind of ironic end for Putin's former caterer," he added.

<h2>What happens now?</h2>

As per the WSJ report, as with previous deaths of Putin rivals, the Russian government is likely going to try to create confusion over who killed Prigozhin.&nbsp;

Russian state-run media has already begun floating stories that blame Ukraine — a likely scapegoat, or some as of now unnamed rival of the Wagner chief.

However, the Wagner chief was often considered Putin's protégé, and while the Kremlin has previously eliminated rivals, Prigozhin's death marks the first high-ranking loyalist whom Putin is believed to have had killed over 'wrongdoings'.

Talking to the publication, Eric Green, former Russia adviser to President Biden’s National Security Council says, in the Kremlin, "there is likely sensitivity to how the Wagner fighters and their sympathisers will take the news" of Prigozhin’s death.

Due to Prigozhin's polarising yet popular image, uncertainty would help the Kremlin claim the report. Yet, as per the report, those on the inside were "clear-eyed about who was behind his murder".

Green says over time, the Kremlin may be more definitive about who killed Prigozhin. He noted that in the poisoning of other rivals like Alexei Navalny and ex-spies Sergei Skripal and Alexander Litvinenko "the Kremlin initially cultivated ambiguity, but in subsequent months dropped unmistakable hints as to its authorship."

In a significant development, the BRICS group, comprised of five nations dedicated to advocating for the "Global South," has taken a monumental step. With the admission of six new members, this coalition of emerging global powers is set to more than double in size. This strategic move not only strengthens BRICS but also positions it as a formidable geopolitical contender alongside the G7. While some of the new member additions align with India's lobbying efforts, others have invoked caution. Molly Gambhir reports.

Russia and Ukraine continue to be involved in ceaseless drone attacks. Kremlin on Wednesday (August 23) said it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack in the capital city of Moscow but three people were killed in another strike in Russia near the Ukrainian&nbsp;border.&nbsp;

Belgorod&nbsp;Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to social media to inform about the drone strike.&nbsp;

"Three civilians have been killed.&nbsp;The Ukrainian forces launched an explosive device through a drone when people were on the street," said&nbsp;Gladkov, who added the drone hit a&nbsp;sanatorium in a village.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the defence ministry claimed that its air defence forces had gunned down two drones hovering over Mozhaisky and Khimki districts in Moscow. A third appeared to be jammed and out of control as it smashed into a&nbsp;&nbsp;high-rise building under construction in a Moscow business district. The same district was hit on two occasions in three days, at the beginning of the month.

Russia and Ukraine continue to be involved in ceaseless drone attacks. Kremlin on Wednesday (August 23) said it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack in the capital city of Moscow but three people were killed in another strike in Russia near the Ukrainian border. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to social media to inform about the drone strike. "Three civilians have been killed. The Ukrainian forces launched an explosive device through a drone when people were on the street," said Gladkov, who added the drone hit a sanatorium in a village. Meanwhile, the defence ministry claimed that its air defence forces had gunned down two drones hovering over Mozhaisky and Khimki districts in Moscow. A third appeared to be jammed and out of control as it smashed into a high-rise building under construction in a Moscow business district. The same district was hit on two occasions in three days, at the beginning of the month. Russia foils Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow amid Kyiv's counteroffensive

A couple of days after the United States approved sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine from Denmark and Netherlands, Kyiv announced training had begun for Ukrainian pilots on operating the planes.&nbsp;

Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov in a TV interview informed about the training, adding that it would take at least six months or possibly longer to complete it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Therefore, to build reasonable expectations, set a minimum of six months in your mind, but do not be disappointed if it is longer," said&nbsp;Reznikov, adding that he would not give details on where and when the training was taking place,&nbsp;

Earlier this week, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken assured his&nbsp;Danish and Dutch counterparts that Washington will&nbsp;accelerate clearance of F-16 transfer requests for the war-torn nation after the pilots are trained.&nbsp;

"I am writing to express the United States' full support for both the transfer of F-16 fighter aircraft to Ukraine and for the training of Ukrainian pilots by qualified F-16 instructors," wrote Blinken in a letter accessed by Reuters.&nbsp;

"It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty," he added.&nbsp;

He said the approval of the requests would allow Ukraine to take "full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training".&nbsp;

<h2>US reacts after 'defeatist' Kyiv statement</h2>

The decision by the US came a day after&nbsp;Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat said his&nbsp;country will not be able to operate the F-16&nbsp;fighter jets to defend itself from the Russian onslaught, at least this year.&nbsp;

“It’s already obvious we won’t be able to defend Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets during this autumn and winter,"&nbsp;Ihnat told Ukrainian channels.&nbsp;

“We had big hopes for this plane, that it will become part of air defence, able to protect us from Russia’s missiles and drones terrorism,” he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Kyiv pressing for fighter jets&nbsp;</h2>

Kyiv had&nbsp;been repeatedly calling upon the&nbsp;Western bloc to supply the F-16 jets for its defence against the superior Russian jets. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remained at the forefront of it as he openly discussed the proposition during his brief appearance at the&nbsp;G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, earlier this year.&nbsp;

After much back-and-forth, US President Joe Biden endorsed a training programme for&nbsp;Ukrainian pilots but never gave a precise timeline.&nbsp;

Ukraine says it shot down 15 Russian drones overnight

Joseph Schulte, a civilian cargo ship from Ukraine, has reached Istanbul. Defying a Russian blockade, the Hong Kong-flagged ship reached its destination on Thursday.

This is the first vessel to directly challenge Vladimir Putin's bid to cut off Ukraine's access to the Black Sea.

<h2>Why is this significant?</h2>

The Joseph Schulte mission comes just days after Russia opened fire on a Turkish-owned ship. The Palau-flagged vessel, as per AFP, was sailing to the Ukrainian river port of Izmail when the Russian navy fired warning shots and boarded it.

Not only this, Moscow, since pulling out of the UN-backed and Turkey mediated Black Sea Grain Initiative, has stepped up attacks on Ukraine's shipping infrastructure.

Ukraine's decision to take on Russia over maritime access coincides with global attention being focused on ensuring the security of grain export routes in time for this year's autumn harvest.

<h2>How did Joseph Schulte&nbsp;evade Russia?</h2>

According to marine traffic websites, the ship moved along a western route that deliberately steered clear of international waters and instead travelled through areas under the control of NATO members&nbsp;Romania and Bulgaria.

In Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's words, the ship was utilising a "new humanitarian corridor" established by Kyiv.&nbsp;

This corridor, as per news agency AFP, was put in place after Russia withdrew from the agreement that facilitated the export of grain along the Black Sea.

<h2>Significance of the Black Sea Grain Initiative</h2>

The deal that happened last year helped bring down global food prices and also helped Ukraine with an important revenue source that aided its efforts in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

However, on July 17, Moscow pulled out of the deal. It claimed that it was exiting the deal, as it had failed to fulfil the goal of relieving hunger from Africa and other famine-stricken nations.&nbsp;

Recently, the United States said it was "going to look at everything" — including the possibility of military support for the Ukrainian ships.

Joseph Schulte, the first Ukraine ship to challenge Russia's Black Sea blockade reaches Istanbul

Ukraine on Thursday launched its latest military campaign that is rallying military-aged citizens to update their data at army enlistment offices and "overcome their fear".

This campaign comes as the war-torn nation's summer-offensive grinds through its third month.

<h2>Major obstacle in army recruitment</h2>

The campaign, as per Reuters, draws on sickly produced videos and photo testimonials of prominent soldiers expressing their fears.&nbsp;

Using these testimonials, it tries to break down a major obstacle that the nation is facing in army recruitment.

As the Russia-Ukraine war nears the 18-month mark, Ukraine is reportedly facing a tough&nbsp;challenge to recruit.

Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar said that military-age citizens are duty bound to update their personal data at draft offices.

"We're all living people, and we all overcome this fear in order to win," stated Deputy Defence Minister.

However, the Ukrainian minister clarified that all those who update their information at drafting centres would not be mobilised automatically. She also said those citizens that do get mobilised would not necessarily end up in a combat zone.

Following the launch of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared a general mobilisation. Reuters reports that military reservists aged 18 to 60 are eligible for conscription under it.

<h2>Fears and war</h2>

The campaign rallies Ukrainians to join the fight. One campaign slogan says "Bravery conquers fear".

Another quotes a Ukrainian soldier who fought in Bakhmut as saying, "Everyone has fears in a war. I do too."

In Ukraine, there have also been reports of corruption in the recruitment process. The Ukrainian military has been hit by a series of scandals involving graft or heavy-handed recruitment tactics.

Pledging to stamp this alleged corruption out, Maliar said, "Trust between citizens and (recruiting centres) is important."

"Right now we're taking a step toward establishing this trust," she added, as per comments carried by an official military platform, and&nbsp;reported by Reuters.

This comes as, on Thursday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree formalising last week's decision to fire all the heads of regional recruitment centres in Ukraine after a nationwide investigation revealed a number of corruption and abuse cases.

"This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery during war is treason," said Zelensky while signing the decree.

Ukraine's new military recruitment campaign calls on citizens to 'overcome their fears'

American alternative-rock band, the Killers, issued an apology following an incident at their recent show in Batumi, Georgia, a former Soviet Republic.&nbsp;

During the performance, the band brought a Russian drummer on stage and referred to the audience as "brothers and sisters," a typical communist addressal,&nbsp;which elicited a negative response from the crowd.

The choice to invite a Russian musician on stage came at a sensitive time, given the ongoing tension between Georgia and Russia.

The strained relationship has been exacerbated by Russia's offensive in Ukraine. The ongoing war, the reports say, has&nbsp;led to&nbsp;an influx of Russian migrants to Georgia. These reports have been denied by the Russian side from time to time.

<h2>Clarification by The Killers</h2>

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Killers expressed regret over any offense caused, clarifying that their intention was never to upset anyone. They cited a longstanding tradition of inviting individuals to participate in drumming on stage as the reason behind their decision to include the Russian drummer.

The phrase "brothers and sisters" used by band leader Brandon Flowers was intended to convey a sense of unity, but it was unfortunately misinterpreted by the audience.

Flowers had hoped to prevent any escalation of negative emotions, emphasising that he saw the concertgoers as part of a shared community.

"We recognise that a comment, meant to suggest that all of the Killers’ audience and fans are ‘brothers and sisters,’ could be misconstrued," the statement added.&nbsp;

Videos circulating on social media depicted disappointed fans leaving the venue and a chorus of boos directed at the band. This incident highlighted the deeply rooted pro-Ukrainian sentiment prevailing among the Georgian public.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Wednesday (August 16) that Russian strikes have once again hit Ukrainian ports overnight.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

<h2>Massive Russian attack</h2>

Speaking during a televised address, Zelensky said that this attack marks the seventh "massive Russian attack" in "just one month," since Moscow withdrew from the UN-backed deal which allowed Kyiv to export grains.

"Last night, Russian terrorists once again deliberately hit our ports. They struck at our infrastructure that is involved in ensuring not just our own but the common global food security."&nbsp;

The western power also criticised Russian President Vladimir Putin's lack of regard for global food security.

Speaking during a press briefing, US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said that his country was seeking "to possibly find ways and corridors in which we can continue to get grain to the places it needs to go."

Volodymyr Zelensky says Russian 'terrorist' attacks on Ukraine a threat to 'global food security'

A day after his comments made headlines, Stian Jenssen, a senior NATO official, apologised for saying that Ukraine could give up territory to Russia in exchange for NATO membership and putting an end to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

<h2>The apology</h2>

Speaking to a Norwegian newspaper,&nbsp;Jenssen, the chief of staff to the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg said that he should not have spoken as simplistically as he did.

He also said that while the alliance members have been discussing ways to bring to an end the war that has already stretched for 18 months, any peace deal would have to be acceptable to Kyiv.

"My statement about this was part of a larger discussion about possible future scenarios in Ukraine, and I shouldn’t have said it that way. It was a mistake," he told the Norwegian newspaper called VG.

Jenssen also stressed that his initial remarks were him just sharing an idea and said "It must be up to Ukraine to decide when and on what terms they want to negotiate".

A day earlier, VG had reported that during a panel debate in Arendal, Jenssen suggested, "I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and get NATO&nbsp;membership in return".

Attempting to pacify the situation, a NATO spokesperson earlier said: "We will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary, and we are committed to achieving a just and lasting peace. The position of the alliance is clear and has not changed."&nbsp;

<h2>No backsies</h2>

As per The Guardian, even as he clarified&nbsp;his comment, Jenssen did not walk back on his suggestion of a land-for-NATO-membership deal.&nbsp;

Kyiv has long advocated for the restoration of its borders, as recognised by the international community before 2014. The war-torn nation is currently involved in a counteroffensive to&nbsp;regain control of significant portions of its land that were taken captive by Russia.

Unhappy with Stoltenberg's close ally for even discussing the land-for-NATO-membership deal in public, Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said: "Trading territory for a Nato umbrella? The apology Speaking to a Norwegian newspaper, Jenssen, the chief of staff to the NATO secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg said that he should not have spoken as simplistically as he did. He also said that while the alliance members have been discussing ways to bring to an end the war that has already stretched for 18 months, any peace deal would have to be acceptable to Kyiv. A day earlier, VG had reported that during a panel debate in Arendal, Jenssen suggested, "I think that a solution could be for Ukraine to give up territory and get NATO membership in return". Attempting to pacify the situation, a NATO spokesperson earlier said: "We will continue to support Ukraine as long as necessary, and we are committed to achieving a just and lasting peace. The position of the alliance is clear and has not changed."
