Putin says Russia 'carefully' examining African proposals to end Ukraine conflict

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 26) claimed that Ukraine had intensified attacks on the frontline in the last few days. Reuters reported that a Ukrainian official said the country's forces are making slow but steady progress in the battlefield.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday, three different media outlets cited unnamed US officials as saying Kyiv had launched a new phase of its ambitious counteroffensive which seeks to eject Russian troops from nearly 20% of Ukrainian land still under occupation.</p>

<p>Asked about these reports, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, told Reuters that "there is nothing new" happening at front lines. "In the south, we are moving forward slowly but surely," he said.</p>

<p>As he interacted with Russian television, Putin claimed that every Ukrainian attack had been beaten back. He also said that Russian forces had inflicted significant losses on their opponents.</p>

<p>Defence ministries of both countries appeared to offer contradicting reports of fighting.</p>

<p>Russian defence ministry said that Russian forces had repelled Ukrainian attacks around the village of Klishchiivka, as per reports by Russian news agency TASS. The village is near Bakhmut.</p>

<p>However, Hannah Maliar, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister wrote on Telegram that Ukraine's troops were "gradually moving forward" near Bakhmut. She claimed that the fight was ongoing near Klischiivka, Kudriumivka and Andriivka.</p>

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 26) claimed that Ukraine had intensified attacks on the frontline in the last few days. Reuters reported that a Ukrainian official said the country's forces are making slow but steady progress in the battlefield. On Wednesday, three different media outlets cited unnamed US officials as saying Kyiv had launched a new phase of its ambitious counteroffensive which seeks to eject Russian troops from nearly 20% of Ukrainian land still under occupation. Asked about these reports, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, told Reuters that "there is nothing new" happening at front lines. "In the south, we are moving forward slowly but surely," he said. As he interacted with Russian television, Putin claimed that every Ukrainian attack had been beaten back. He also said that Russian forces had inflicted significant losses on their opponents. Defence ministries of both countries appeared to offer contradicting reports of fighting. Russian defence ministry said that Russian forces had repelled Ukrainian attacks around the village of Klishchiivka, as per reports by Russian news agency TASS. The village is near Bakhmut. However, Hannah Maliar, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister wrote on Telegram that Ukraine's troops were "gradually moving forward" near Bakhmut. She claimed that the fight was ongoing near Klischiivka, Kudriumivka and Andriivka. She claimed that Ukrainian forces beat back Russian attacks near Kupiansk and Lyman. Ukraine MP faces investigation for allegedly faking sick leave to holiday abroad during wartime restrictions

Not only is Kyiv hampered by a shortage of ammunition but some of the tactics that are now being deployed by the Russians have created serious problems. In the past week, Russia has started to use its anti-ship missiles, such as the p-800 Onyx to strike land targets inside Ukraine. And this has created all kinds of problems for the Ukrainian anti-air defence systems. Yuri Ihnat, the spokesperson of the Ukrainian air force has gone on record to state that Ukraine simply hasn't got the means to guard itself against missiles like the Onyx along its coast. So why is Ukraine getting outgunned at its ports in this stage of the war? Mohammed Saleh gets you the details.

<p>The diplomatic tumult surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin's personal attendance at the BRICS summit in South Africa has taken a pause. Putin will attend the summit virtually and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/russian-president-putin-to-skip-brics-summit-in-south-africa-617528">not physically</a>, while foreign minister Sergey Lavrov will travel to South Africa for the summit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>South Africa is a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court&nbsp;in 2002, under which it issued the warrant for Putin's arrest in March. Thus, South Africa would have had to arrest the Russian president if he had landed in the country for the BRICS summit.</p>

<p>South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had asked the ICC for an exemption on the grounds that imposing detention could endanger the "security, peace and order of the state."</p>

From the corridors of power in Madrid emerged the progressive discourse over gender parity that dominated weeks of election campaigns in Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's government has been seen progressive laws on abortion and transgender rights. But such rights could bet stripped back if the right-wing Vox party comes to power, Sanchez has warned. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his opponent Santiago Abascal | Reuters Meanwhile, Vox party's Santiago Abascal is running on the agenda of reversing Sanchez's policies on gender parity, queer rights, and a reduction in the regional government's powers. Opinion polls predict that Sanchez may very well lose to the right-wing alliance, worrying observers who in the past have hailed the country's laws to ensure gender parity. By the next edition of The Capitals, Madrid may have a new government or a new prime minister. Read this, and more, in The Capitals. Pretoria, South Africa South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa | Reuters The diplomatic tumult surrounding Russian President Vladimir Putin's personal attendance at the BRICS summit in South Africa has taken a pause. Putin will attend the summit virtually and not physically, while foreign minister Sergey Lavrov will travel to South Africa for the summit. South Africa is a signatory to the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court in 2002, under which it issued the warrant for Putin's arrest in March. Thus, South Africa would have had to arrest the Russian president if he had landed in the country for the BRICS summit. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa had asked the ICC for an exemption on the grounds that imposing detention could endanger the "security, peace and order of the state." Russian installed Governor of Crimean Peninsula has claimed that a Ukrainian drone strike hit an Ammunition Depot in Russia and a residential building was also damaged in the area.

Drone strikes hit two buildings in Moscow, Russia blames Ukraine for 'terrorist attack'

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday (July 21) said that the bridge which links Russia to the Crimea peninsula "brings war not peace" and hence it is a military target.</p>

<p>On Monday, two civilians were killed and a part of the road bridge was out of service after explosions took place on the Crimea bridge. The bridge had recently got back into full operation after it was damaged severely in a similar attack in October.<br />

The attack that took place on Monday was welcomed by Ukraine, however, their officials did not claim any direct responsibility, while Moscow blamed Kyiv. Russia had annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and Kyiv wishes&nbsp;to reclaim it as it continues to fight back against the 17-month-long full-scale invasion by&nbsp;Russia.</p>

Will Ukraine war expand to other regions? Poland moving troops over Wagner risk from Belarus

<p>Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday (July 19) that it would deem all ships travelling to Ukrainian ports to be carriers of military cargo. It added that countries the flag of which would potentially fly on the ships will be considered to be party to the conflict on the Ukrainian side. Russia has taken this stance after its decision this week to pull out of the United Nations-brokered Black Sea grain import deal. This deal had previously guaranteed the safety of Ukrainian exports for the past one year.</p>

<p>"In connection with the termination of the Black Sea Initiative and the end of the maritime humanitarian corridor, from 00.00 Moscow time on July 20, 2023 (2100 GMT on Wednesday) all ships proceeding to Ukrainian ports in Black Sea waters will be considered as potential carriers of military cargo," the ministry said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.</p>

Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday (July 19) that it would deem all ships travelling to Ukrainian ports to be carriers of military cargo. It added that countries the flag of which would potentially fly on the ships will be considered to be party to the conflict on the Ukrainian side.

Russian Defence Ministry said on Wednesday (July 19) that it would deem all ships travelling to Ukrainian ports to be carriers of military cargo. It added that countries the flag of which would potentially fly on the ships will be considered to be party to the conflict on the Ukrainian side. Russia has taken this stance after its decision this week to pull out of the United Nations-brokered Black Sea grain import deal. This deal had previously guaranteed the safety of Ukrainian exports for the past one year. "In connection with the termination of the Black Sea Initiative and the end of the maritime humanitarian corridor, from 00.00 Moscow time on July 20, 2023 (2100 GMT on Wednesday) all ships proceeding to Ukrainian ports in Black Sea waters will be considered as potential carriers of military cargo," the ministry said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app. Watch | BRICS Summit 2023: FM Lavrov to represent Russia at the Summit × The ministry also said that Russia was also declaring southeastern and northwestern parts of the Black Sea's international waters to be temporarily unsafe for navigation. Blow hot blow cold? Putin sounds conciliatory but defence ministry raises stakes on grain ships

<p>Russia is reportedly amassing 100,000 troops to obliterate Kyiv’s defences in the Kharkiv region, the Ukrainian army has said. Moscow is challenging Kyiv’s defences in the eastern sector of Kupiansk as Ukrainian forces are concentrating on the counteroffensive efforts on the southern front, Ukraine’s Army Command East spokesman Serhiy Cherevatyi said on Monday.</p>

<p>After Russia pulled out of the Black Sea grain deal, which allowed the safe passage for Ukrainian grain exports, global wheat prices have exponentially shot up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday, wheat prices on the European stock exchange soared by nearly nine per cent from the previous day to $284 per tonne. Putin has agreed to extend Black Sea grain deal, says Erdogan

<p>There is a reason why the Kerch Bridge—the bridge connecting occupied Crimea to the Russian mainland—was attacked twice allegedly by Ukraine—the first time in October last year and then on Monday.</p>

<p>Ukraine’s much-touted counter-offensive that began in April hasn’t yielded the desired results so far. As it scrambles to land a decisive blow to the Russian forces, the bridge emerges as a key target for Kyiv.</p>

<h2><strong>Why is the bridge important for Russia and Ukraine?</strong></h2>

<p>The bridge is important for Russia from a strategic point of view, as it is the only way Kremlin can keep a hold on occupied Crimea and the southern Kherson region.</p>

<p>It is precisely for this reason that Ukraine wants the bridge to be destroyed and complicate Russia's logistical challenges, a key aspect of the early phase of Ukraine's counter-offensive, reports BBC.</p>

<p>In October, when a truck laden with explosives went off on the bridge, Ukraine was trying to rid&nbsp;the southern Kherson city of the Russian forces. Now, Kyiv wants to impede Russian forces’ advances that are currently occupying areas south of the Dnipro River.</p>

<p>Logistics hubs across the south have been repeatedly hit using long-range weapons supplied by Ukraine's Western backers.</p>

<p>Hence, Kyiv’s alleged latest attack on the Kerch Bridge must be viewed as part of their wider effort to liberate the southern areas that came under the occupation of Russian forces during last year's full-scale Russian invasion.</p>

<h2>Attack on Crimean Bridge: At least 2 killed in Kerch blasts, Moscow blames Kyiv</h2>

<div class="videoWrapper trancodeVideo"><iframe allowfullscreen="" autoplay="1" class="includeVideo" frameborder="0" height="350" src="https://www.wionews.com/videos/attack-on-crimean-bridge-at-least-2-killed-in-kerch-blasts-moscow-blames-kyiv-616522/embed" style="width:100%;max-width:560px;" width="560"></iframe></div>

<h2><strong>Bridge—a symbol of hatred</strong></h2>

<p>There’s another reason for Ukraine’s hatred towards the Kerch Bridge. It was inaugurated in 2018 by Russian President Vladimir Putin amidst great fanfare. It is considered a hated symbol of Russian occupation.</p>

<p>That is why after last October's explosion, which briefly crippled the bridge, there was euphoria across Ukraine.</p>

<p>In the latest counter-offensive, Ukrainian forces have retaken 18 sq km (7 sq miles) over the past week, Ukraine's deputy defence minister Hanna Maliar said on messaging app Telegram on Monday.</p>

<p>Those gains take the total area of reclaimed land to 210 sq km (81 sq miles) since the counter-offensive began.</p>

<p>Maliar also claimed that Kyiv's forces had destroyed six Russian ammunition depots in the space of 24 hours, a remark that hinted at Ukrainian tactics.</p>

<p>"We inflict effective, painful and precise blows and bleed the occupier, for whom the lack of ammunition and fuel will sooner or later become fatal," she was quoted as saying.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine takes responsibility</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier in the day, a Ukrainian security official claimed that the attack was carried out at the behest of Kyiv.</p>

<p>The nearly 12-mile crossing, which is the longest in Europe and holds huge strategic and symbolic importance for Moscow, came under attack on Monday. A couple&nbsp;was killed, while their daughter suffered injuries.</p>

<p>A source in Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) told CNN this attack was a joint operation of the SBU and Ukraine’s naval forces. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because they had not received authorisation to speak on the record.</p>

<p>Two strikes were reportedly carried out around 3 am&nbsp;local time Monday, damaging part of the bridge, according to the Telegram channel Grey Zone, which supports the Wagner mercenary group led by Yevgeny Prigozhin.</p>

<h2><strong>When will the bridge be restored?</strong></h2>

<p>According to reports, repairs could take this summer to finish as Russian officials are still assessing the damages.</p>

<p>A timeline for the restoration of the Crimean Bridge, which has parallel road and rail lines, will be "clear by evening", said Marat Khusnullin, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister previously tasked with the Crimean Bridge's reconstruction after a first blast in October 2022.</p>

<p>Moreover, it's not completely clear what's been damaged this time.</p>

<p>According to pictures circulating online, the latest attack appeared to be less damaging than the last one as there were no immediate signs that the rail bridge has been hit.</p>

<p>But Russia would want to begin the repair works soon as the rail link is the most important—it's been used to carry tanks and other heavy armoured equipment into Crimea from Russia.</p>

<p>Experts note that Monday’s attack won’t be the last as Kerch Bridge is within range of weapons such as the British-supplied Storm Shadow missile. As long as it serves any military purpose for Russia, it'll remain in Kyiv's sights, BBC reported.</p>

<h2><strong>Putin vows tougher response</strong></h2>

<p>President Vladimir Putin on Monday denounced the&nbsp;"terror attack" and called for tougher security measures after Kyiv targeted the&nbsp;bridge linking Moscow-annexed Crimea to Russia.</p>

<p>"Another terrorist attack was committed on the bridge last night," Putin said in televised remarks.</p>

<p>"I am waiting for specific proposals to improve the security of this strategic, important transport&nbsp;facility."</p>

The statement came at a time when the top general reported about Kyiv's new progress on the southern front.<br />
<br />
However, Ukrainian military analysts have stated that things have been difficult for Ukrainian forces as they make efforts to advance southward.<br />
<br />
A counter-offensive was launched by Ukraine to re-capture swathes of land in southern and eastern Ukraine which were earlier captured by Russian forces after they invaded Kyiv in February 2022.</p>

<p>The counter-offensive has been aiming at capturing villages in the southeast as part of the drive towards areas near the eastern city of Bakhmut and the Sea of Azov, which were captured in May by Russian forces after months of battles.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, Russia has claimed that its forces have repelled attacks by Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donetsk region, which includes regions around Bakhmut.<br />

"We must all understand very clearly, as clearly as possible, that Russian forces in our southern and eastern lands are doing everything they can in order to stop our soldiers," said Zelensky in his nightly video address, after he held a meeting with top commanders on Friday. "And every thousand metres we advance, every success of every combat brigade deserves our gratitude,” he added.</p>

Ukrainian forces have been aiming to cut off a land bridge which was established by Russian forces with the annexed Crimean peninsula.<br />

"They are moving on the village of Robotyne. The enemy is offering resistance to stop our advance southward,” he added. The statement came at a time when the top general reported about Kyiv's new progress on the southern front. However, Ukrainian military analysts have stated that things have been difficult for Ukrainian forces as they make efforts to advance southward. A counter-offensive was launched by Ukraine to re-capture swathes of land in southern and eastern Ukraine which were earlier captured by Russian forces after they invaded Kyiv in February 2022. Meanwhile, Russia has claimed that its forces have repelled attacks by Ukrainian forces in the eastern Donetsk region, which includes regions around Bakhmut. "We must all understand very clearly, as clearly as possible, that Russian forces in our southern and eastern lands are doing everything they can in order to stop our soldiers," said Zelensky in his nightly video address, after he held a meeting with top commanders on Friday. "And every thousand metres we advance, every success of every combat brigade deserves our gratitude,” he added. Russian forces claim to repel 16 Ukrainian attacks After the meeting, Commander of Ukrainian forces in the south General Oleksander Tarnavskyi said that his troops were "systematically moving the enemy out of their positions". Taking to Telegram, he wrote that in the past 24 hours, enemy losses were equivalent to at least 200. Ukrainian forces have been aiming to cut off a land bridge which was established by Russian forces with the annexed Crimean peninsula. "They are moving on the village of Robotyne. The enemy is offering resistance to stop our advance southward,” he added. In its daily report, the defence ministry of Russia stated that 16 Ukrainian attacks were repelled by the forces in the eastern front which included near the long-contested town of Maryinka and in Klishchiivka, a strategic village on southern fringe of Bakhmut.
