Russia has reportedly boosted efforts to recruit young female fighters as drone operators, snipers, medics and drivers.

The Bors battalion of the Russian Defence Ministry is running an ad campaign on the country’s major social media platforms, with one account specifically targeting women. The account, named “fighting girls”, is urging girls to sign up and serve in the Russian forces. The conditions — contract length and pay — are identical to those offered by the Bors unit.

Volunteers have the option to sign up for six months and receive special benefits. They can also earn up to above $2000 per month for their services.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu proudly announced earlier this year that above 44,000 women were serving in the Russian army.&nbsp;

He said 1,100 of them were directly involved in the "special military operation," and that one-third had received special state decorations.

Some 1,300 were studying at military colleges, Shoigu added, before describing the women as an "enchanting army."

Russia looking to recruit female fighters as war intensifies against Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his concerns on Saturday (Nov 4)&nbsp;saying that the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in West Asia has shifted the "focus" away from the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The public support in the United States to support Kyiv's war effort during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict is waning,&nbsp;with a majority of adults now advocating for a time limit on American financial aid to Kyiv, a recent Gallup poll said.

The development comes amid the push by the House Democrats towards&nbsp;an additional aid package to Ukraine summing up to several billion.&nbsp;In a recent <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israel-hamas-war-joe-bidens-wartime-address-hails-india-middle-east-europe-corridor-649015">address from the Oval Office</a>, President Biden called on Congress to approve $106 billion in funding for Ukraine, Israel, and US border security.&nbsp;

This also follows the supply of&nbsp;Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) to Ukraine that briefly posed a threat to the Russian supply lines at multiple forward positions in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The responses mostly aligned with party affiliations, as 84 per cent of Republicans supported imposing a time limit on aid to Ukraine, and 34 per cent of Democrats also expressed support for this idea.

The poll revealed that 41 per cent of Americans think the United States is doing "too much" to assist Ukraine in countering Russia's presence along its borders. The opposition to the support for war conflict appears to be particularly strong among Republicans and independents.

Among Republicans, 62 per cent now believe the US is overextending itself in its support for Ukraine, marking a significant increase from August 2022.

A significant number of independents, almost half, share this view, while only 14 per cent of Democrats believe that the US is doing too much to aid Kyiv.

<h2>Most Americans believe Russia-Ukraine war is at stalemate</h2>

The survey revealed a perception among the American public that neither Ukraine nor Russia is winning the war. A substantial 64 percent of Americans, across party lines, believe that neither side is prevailing in the conflict.

Germany wants Ukraine to begin formal talks on joining the European Union (EU) by the end of the year.&nbsp;Speaking at a conference in Berlin, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday said that she was confident that next month the EU would advance Kyiv's membership bid.

<h2>EU enlargement</h2>

Baerbock, as per a Reuters report, presented the prospect of the bloc's enlargement as a geo-strategic necessity.

She suggested that candidate nations should be given some of the benefits of an EU membership even before they fully enter the bloc.

The German minister said there was a need to plough ahead with "tedious" internal reforms so that it could function with 30-plus members and greater centralisation of power within the EU.&nbsp;

According to the Times, she proposed this could be done by stripping individual countries of their veto rights and simplification of the sprawling administrative apparatus — under which 27 member states are in charge of their own individual policy brief.

"We want to see Ukraine a member of our European Union," she said, adding, "The European Union has to be enlarged. That is the geo-political consequence of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine."

<h2>EU to decide soon</h2>

As per Reuters, the EU will soon reach a decision on the start of talks about Ukraine joining the bloc. They are expected to reach a decision about the beginning of the formal start of Kyiv's membership talks at the December 14-15 summit.

"I am convinced that the European Council in December is going to send out that signal," said the German Minister.

"However, an enlarged EU will only be stronger if we do what we have been so hesitant to do for so long - review and rethink the way in which our union functions," she added.&nbsp;

<h2>Ukraine 'optimistic'</h2>

AFP reports that speaking ahead of the conference in Berlin, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that Kyiv was optimistic about its efforts to open EU membership talks this year.

"We are optimistic. We did a lot of reforms and we passed legislation necessary to meet, to implement the recommendations," said Kuleba.&nbsp;

"So we are looking forward to the presentation of this report and I have reasons to believe that it will pave the way to the decision of the European Council on opening accession talks with Ukraine."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the United States of stirring up the "deadly chaos" unfolding in the Middle East.

He has also charged the West and Ukraine of stirring up unrest inside Russia. This comes after anti-Israel protesters stormed the Makhachkala airport in Russia's predominantly Muslim Dagestan region.

<h2>Who's benefiting from the "deadly chaos"?</h2>

Speaking during a televised meeting with high-ranking members of his security council, Putin instigated that the US and Ukraine orchestrated the riot at the Russian airport via social media, and said, "The events in Makhachkala last night were instigated through social networks, not least from Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services."

Who's benefiting from the "deadly chaos"? Speaking during a televised meeting with high-ranking members of his security council, Putin instigated that the US and Ukraine orchestrated the riot at the Russian airport via social media, and said, "The events in Makhachkala last night were instigated through social networks, not least from Ukraine, by the hands of agents of Western special services." The Russian President claimed that there have been "attempts" to destabilise the Russian society. Ukrainian family of 9, including two minors brutally slain by Russian soldiers

With no end in sight to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, a third set of peace talks began in Malta on Saturday (Oct 29), a gathering which saw the presence of over 60 national security advisers, media reports said. Evidently, Moscow was absent from the talks and even went on to criticise&nbsp;it.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in a statement, highlighted the participation of 66 countries as evidence that his Peace Formula which he proposed last year has since gone "global." Notably, these talks come in the wake of previous peace talk gatherings in Jeddah and Copenhagen. The Ukrainian delegation is now aspiring to ultimately convene a summit involving heads of state.

Zelensky also called for the plan's joint implementation to reflect "not a particular national position, but the position of people, of all mankind."

"We shall prepare a joint action plan and then submit it to the Global Peace Summit – at the level of leaders – to approve and implement it for the sake of peace, for the sake of the protection of every nation from wars. And let this result be our common legacy for humanity!" he said.

Russia vs Ukraine: Peace talks open in Malta as Zelensky says his 10-point plan has gone 'global'

The Russian army, which has been fighting to gain control of the embattled city of Avdiivka, in eastern Ukraine have most probably faced some worst casualty rates this year, as they have faced losses of at least 4,000 troops, as per reports.

In a call held with US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Saturday (Oct 28), Ukraine Defence Minister Rustem Umerov spoke about the staggering death tally of the Russian army in Avdiivka, as per a Telegram post by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

The defence ministry of the United Kingdom stated eight brigades had been deployed by Moscow in its campaign for Avdiivka, which is home to a sprawling coke plant and is located roughly 16 miles from Donetsk, which has been occupied by Russia. However, those forces have “likely suffered some of Russia’s highest casualty rates of 2023 so far”.

In its Saturday battlefield report, the Ukrainian General Staff stated that Russian forces were making attempts to encircle Avdiivka, however, Kyiv has continued to repel the Russian troops strongly. “The Ukrainian soldiers are standing their ground, inflicting major losses on the enemy,” it stated.

The assault was launched by Russia on the embattled Donetsk in mid-October as Ukrainian forces were slammed with repeated artillery assaults along with multiple attacks by armoured vehicles and troops, as per the local and military authorities in Ukraine.

<h2>Moscow lost at least a brigade: Zelensky</h2>

On Friday, Ukraine President Vladimir Zelensky stated that in the offensive push of Russia for Avdiivka, Moscow lost “at least a brigade”, which has different sizes but can include as many as 8,000 troops.

“The invaders made several attempts to surround Avdiivka, but each time our soldiers stopped them and threw them back, causing painful losses,” stated Zelensky.

The concentrated assault by Russia on Avdiivka came nearly five months after a counteroffensive was launched by Ukraine in the south and eastern territories, currently taken by Moscow.

The American think tank, the Institute for the Study of War, on Thursday, said that the forces of Moscow have faced severe losses in equipment in their campaign to control Avdiivka, which “will likely undermine Russian offensive capabilities over the long term”.

This week, the Biden administration stated that Russian soldiers are being executed by the Russian military if they are not following the orders and entire units have been threatened that they will be killed if they tried retreating from the battlefield in Ukraine.

For over a year and a half, the war in Ukraine has dominated global attention due to the bloody scenes after Russia’s invasion. Despite the grinding battle of attrition, the Russian armed forces are pressing on. Moscow continues to bank on its military-industrial complex and recently tested its ability to deliver a massive retaliatory nuclear strike by land, sea and air.

Ukrainian officials stated that six people were killed and 14 others were injured in a Russian missile attack which was carried out on a postal distribution centre in Kharkiv, the war-devastated northeastern Ukrainian city, said officials from Ukraine.

"Russian missiles hit the Nova Poshta centre - an ordinary civilian object," stated Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenksy, on the Telegram messaging app.

A video was posted by him which showed a building with windows in ruins after the blast and the construction material&nbsp;strewn around, with red trucks, which had Nova Poshta written on them in Ukrainian, standing in front of it.

Governor of the Kharkiv region, which has the city of Kharkiv as its administrative centre, Oleh Synehubov said that many injured people were admitted to hospital in serious condition.

Moscow's&nbsp;drive to capture Avdiivka faced fierce resistance on Saturday, said Ukraine's military, as the fortifications were bolstered by defences. "The enemy is becoming more active, but is incurring heavy losses," said General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, commander of Ukraine's troops in the south, on Telegram.

Russia launches missile attack on postal centre in Kharkiv, six killed

Russia is estimated to have lost 14 helicopters during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ukraine-attacks-russian-targets-with-missile-system-covertly-given-by-the-us-648172">strikes by Ukraine</a> through the US-provided Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) this week, British defence ministry claimed. The announcement reflects the game-changer role that the missile system may play for Ukraine, mirroring the successful role played by&nbsp;US-provided Stinger missiles to the Afghan Mujahideen in the 1980s during Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

The ATACMS and Stinger missiles, however, are two different kind of air weapons but their potential to turn the dynamics of a conflict during a frontline impasse shows initial similarities.&nbsp;

ATACMS are capable of reaching targets 100 miles or more away, whereas an FIM-92 Stinger is a human-portable air-defence system that operates as an infrared homing surface-to-air missile.&nbsp;It can be adapted to fire from a wide variety of ground vehicles, and from helicopters as the Air-to-Air Stinger.

According to an&nbsp;estimate published by Air Defence Artillery platform, Afghan Mujahideen during the 1980s&nbsp;used Stingers to shoot down 269 aircraft out of 340 engagements, with a 79 per cent success rate.

On Friday (Oct 20), the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) said in its intelligence update that while the extent of damage is currently unconfirmed, it is likely nine Russian military helicopters at Berdyansk and five at Luhansk were destroyed.

Earlier this week, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv used the ATACMS to attack Russian airfields in Luhansk region and the port city of Berdyansk in the Zaporizhzhia region on Tuesday.

The Kremlin is yet to react on the reports of the strikes but on Wednesday Russian President Vladimir Putin, whilst in Beijing,&nbsp;called the US delivery of ATACMS missiles to Ukraine "another mistake by the United States."

According to the British defence officials cited in the Newsweek, it is expected that the losses of the helicopters will impact Moscow's ability to defend its assets in the contested territories and its ongoing scale of offence against Ukraine.

"Given that Russian fixed wing close air support to date has been extremely poor, Russian defensive lines have become increasingly reliant on rotary wing support in the face of the Ukrainian offensive," the ministry's intelligence update said.

"Berdyansk was being used as a primary Forward Operating Base on the southern axis providing both logistics and offensive/defensive capabilities."

"Given the current strain on Russian military production, the confirmed loss of any air frames will be difficult to replace in the short to medium term," the British MOD said.

"This loss will also likely create additional pressure on Russia's pilots and air frames, already almost certainly suffering combat exhaustion and maintenance issues due to the unanticipated protracted campaign," it said.

Moscow has lost 324 of its 899 military helicopters since the beginning of war in Ukraine, according to figures cited by the General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces.

Russia says it 'highly values' North Korea's support against Ukraine as Lavrov arrives in Pyongyang

Ukraine's armed forces used recently acquired American long-range missiles against Russia for the first time on Tuesday (October 17). US President Joe Biden, who was previously hesitant to provide these weapons to Ukraine, ultimately authorised the covert delivery by the Pentagon in response to what they said were Ukraine's urgent needs on field against Russian offensive.&nbsp;

They were reportedly deployed to strike two air bases in territory now overtaken by Russia, causing significant damage, according to Ukrainian special operations forces.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed gratitude to Washington for its support.

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

The decision marks a shift in the Biden administration's approach, particularly as Ukraine grappled with a challenging counteroffensive in its southern and eastern regions.

While the impact of these missiles on the battlefield remains uncertain, officials believe they can effectively target key Russian bases that support troops in Ukraine. The delivery was conducted covertly due to concerns about potential attacks during shipment.

The decision to provide these long-range missiles marked a significant change, partly influenced by actions taken by Britain and France.

<h2>What are these long-range missiles?</h2>

These long-range missiles are known as ATACMS or Army Tactical Missile System and were designed during the end of the Cold War for deep-strike missions on priority enemy targets.

The ATACMS missiles provided to Ukraine contain cluster munitions, a type of weaponry banned by international agreements that the United States has not signed.&nbsp;

Ukraine attacks Russian targets with missile system secretly given by the US

Russian ships linked to military transport networks have collected cargo from North Korea and delivered it to an apparent Russian military port on multiple occasions over the past two months, The Washington Post said in a report on Monday (Oct 16) citing satellite images. This is the clearest evidence so far that North Korea might be helping Moscow's war effort.

As per the report, the two ships had no record of running this route between the two countries (North Korea and Russia) until August. At that time, US intelligence assessments suggested that Russia was looking to get North Korean weaponry to replenish its dwindling supplies for the ongoing war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

Satellite images provided by the London-based Royal United Services Institute showed that two ships - the Angara and the Maria - have been plying the route between the North Korean port of Rajin and a secure port facility in Russia's Dunai, making at least five round trips beginning mid-August through last Saturday.&nbsp;

As per RUSI analysts and US officials, the images showed ships linked to the Russian military logistics network which strongly suggested that these commercial vessels were carrying military equipment.&nbsp;

“This will have a very serious effect on the trajectory of the war," Jack Watling from the RUSI said, adding that North Korea has the ability to manufacture a lot of ammunition and the country also has significant stockpiles.

The Washington Post reported that around the time the shipments began, munition pits were rapidly expanded at an ammunition depot near the Ukrainian border.&nbsp;

Citing data from Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking site, the report said the two vessels went dark shortly before they began operating on this route by turning off the signal of their automatic identification system. This allowed the vessels to hide their position as they transited between ports.

The White House official also said that the expanding military partnership between North Korea and Russia including any technology transfers from Moscow to Pyongyang undermined regional stability and the global non-proliferation regime.&nbsp;

As per the report, the two ships had no record of running this route between the two countries (North Korea and Russia) until August. At that time, US intelligence assessments suggested that Russia was looking to get North Korean weaponry to replenish its dwindling supplies for the ongoing war in Ukraine. Satellite images provided by the London-based Royal United Services Institute showed that two ships - the Angara and the Maria - have been plying the route between the North Korean port of Rajin and a secure port facility in Russia's Dunai, making at least five round trips beginning mid-August through last Saturday. As per RUSI analysts and US officials, the images showed ships linked to the Russian military logistics network which strongly suggested that these commercial vessels were carrying military equipment. Finance min says donor nations' 'tiredness' growing amid elections, geopolitical shift “This will have a very serious effect on the trajectory of the war," Jack Watling from the RUSI said, adding that North Korea has the ability to manufacture a lot of ammunition and the country also has significant stockpiles. The Washington Post reported that around the time the shipments began, munition pits were rapidly expanded at an ammunition depot near the Ukrainian border. Citing data from Marine Traffic, a ship-tracking site, the report said the two vessels went dark shortly before they began operating on this route by turning off the signal of their automatic identification system. This allowed the vessels to hide their position as they transited between ports. The images showed two vessels making multiple trips between Dunai and Rajin, picking up and delivering cargo at each location. North Korea might be sending arms to Russia for Ukraine war: Report

Vladimir Putin's arrival in Kyrgyzstan on Thursday marked his first trip abroad since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for him in March.

The Russian President is wanted over allegations of deportation of Ukrainian children. However, Kyrgyzstan is not a member of the ICC, and it is not bound by the court's ruling to arrest him.

<h2>Putin in Kyrgyzstan</h2>

Putin's arrival in Kyrgyzstan was reported by Russian news agencies TASS, Interfax, and RIA Novosti early on Thursday.&nbsp;

During the visit, he is scheduled to meet with Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Japarov and take part&nbsp;in a summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Russian ally, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, and other regional leaders will also participate in the summit.

However, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has decided to skip the summit.

Notably, Putin has been relatively absent from international travel since the launch of Russia's Ukraine offensive in February 2022.&nbsp;

This year, he has only travelled to Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine. His last foreign visits to Belarus and Kyrgyzstan were in December of last year. However, as per AFP, Putin is planning future visits to North Korea and China.&nbsp;

<h2>ICC arrest warrant</h2>

Moscow has denounced the warrant as "illegal" and has equated the Russian President's potential arrest abroad to an act of war.&nbsp;

Despite that, Russia, in practice, has taken precautions to avoid Putin's arrest. This includes sending Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to represent the nation at a BRICS summit in ICC member South Africa in August.

Commenting on his absence from Johannesburg, Putin earlier this month said: "Why should I create some problems for our friends during an event?".

Putin arrives in Kyrgyzstan for his first international trip since ICC arrest warrant

In a major boost to Ukraine's war effort against Russia, Britain and northern European allies of the United States unveiled a fresh military support initiative worth £100 million ($123 million) to bolster Kyiv's position in the ongoing conflict.

Funded by the UK-administered International Fund for Ukraine (IFU), it aims to assist Ukraine's armed forces in de-mining, vehicle maintenance, and safeguarding critical infrastructure.

<h2>Russia-Ukraine war: What the latest aid package is about?</h2>

The aid package, according to&nbsp;the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), will furnish equipment to help Ukrainian troops navigate minefields, bridge rivers and trenches, and provide heavy-duty plant vehicles to eliminate Russian non-explosive obstacles.

These resources will aid Ukraine in fortifying defensive positions for the protection of vital national infrastructure, British officials said.

<h2>What does it mean?</h2>

This announcement coincides with the finalisation of contracts related to a previously disclosed IFU package, which will provide over-air defence capabilities to Ukraine, including the MSI-DS Terrahawk Paladin platform designed to track and neutralise drones and protect critical infrastructure.

British Defence Secretary Grant Shapps said that these new air defence systems would contribute to safeguarding civilians from Russia's aggressive bombing campaign against Ukraine.

He added the new equipment pledged would "give Ukrainian soldiers what they need to breach Russia's deadly minefields".

The official announcement of this support was made in coordination with the UK's&nbsp;IFU partner nations during a Ukraine-focused meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

Admiral Tony Radakin, Chief of the Defence Staff in Britain, described this new aid package as part of a significant and sustained effort involving 50 nations to support Ukraine's war effort.

He argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin had underestimated "the strength and resilience of his opposition".&nbsp;

"If we stick together, and stay the course, then Russia will continue to lose, Ukraine will prevail and the rules that matter to global security will endure," Radakin said.

Ukraine to get $123mn from European nations to breach 'Russia's deadly minefields'

According to the World Health Organization, the theme this year for World Mental Health Day is to improve knowledge raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone's mental health. As a universal human right, this becomes even more crucial for people living in constant conflict zones more so now as we are in the midst of two major Wars. One is on the edge of Europe between Russia and Ukraine which started in February last year and the latest is the Hamas and Israel conflict which began over the weekend.

World Mental Health Day: What wars mean to people's emotional health?

The Russia-Ukraine war has reached its 590th day. Amid the ongoing war, Ukraine has reportedly developed "invisibility cloaks" that will help hide the war-torn nation's snipers from Russian military thermal imagery cameras.

<h2>Invisibility cloaks: How will they work?</h2>

The coats called 'Brave 1', as per Mirror UK,&nbsp;will soak up heat, which means that the Russian thermal cameras will be unable to detect Ukrainian soldiers. Reportedly, these coats&nbsp;are also waterproof and lightweight.&nbsp;

As per the report, the newly supplied coats have been tested by the Ukraine special forces.&nbsp;

Ukraine's Deputy Minister for Innovation Mykhailo Fedorov called these coats a 'game changer' for Kyiv forces and said: "The cloak blocks the radiation of heat and makes the fighters invisible to the enemy. For example, it will be for snipers or Special Operations Forces that perform combat tasks."

"The invisibility cloak is just one of the developments that will help save the lives of our soldiers at the front. Now we need even more," he added.

<h2>The need for invisibility cloaks</h2>

During the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, Russian drones have spotted Kyiv's marksmen sneaking up on Moscow's forces. This detection has more often than not landed Ukrainian snipers in grave danger.

This development comes as Ukraine on Thursday (5th October) announced that its troops have made headway in the eastern theatre of their counteroffensive operation against aggressor Russia. As per Reuters, Kyiv forces, however, said that they were under pressure further north.

"The most difficult area is the Lyman-Kupiansk sector," said Ilia Yevlash, spokesperson for Ukraine's eastern group of forces.

"The intensity of assaults there has increased … The enemy has chosen a new point - Makiivka - and is directing all its main efforts into this direction. Of course, we are also repulsing enemy attacks and inflicting damage on forces and equipment."

Recent days have also seen Western nations criticise Ukraine's counteroffensive strategy. While President Volodymyr Zelensky has acknowledged that it is proceeding more slowly than the military would have liked, he has dismissed Western criticism.
