U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is back in Israel this week, where he says he will work to help prolong a cease-fire so more hostages can be released and more humanitarian aid can be delivered to Gaza. At the NATO foreign ministers' meeting in Brussels, Blinken tried to reassure allies of continued U.S. support for Ukraine as Kyiv prepares for another winter of fighting. U.S. President Joe Biden will not be attending this week’s 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP 28.

Russia deploys new troops in Kherson region, likely deploying 104th Guard Airborne division: Report

A Russian court has sentenced a man to 10 days in jail for writing "No to war" on snow-covered turnstile outside a skating rink in Moscow, according to news agency AFP.&nbsp;

The man identified as&nbsp;Dmitry Fedorov was caught by the police on November 23&nbsp;in the capital city's Gorky Park while using his fingers to trace the forbidden slogan.&nbsp;

The message is believed to be considered an offence under a law targeting&nbsp;anyone deemed to have acted to discredit Russia’s armed forces.

Although Fedorov admitted in the court that he indeed wrote the anti-war slogan, he disputed the prosecutor's&nbsp;allegation that he disobeyed the police and allegedly refused to go to a police station.&nbsp;

The court documents noted that after the crime, police officers offered to take Fedorov in a vehicle to the&nbsp;Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs but he refused.&nbsp;

Apart from the prison sentence,&nbsp;Fedorov was also fined an undisclosed amount, according to local Russia media reports.&nbsp;

US Secretary of State discusses war in Ukraine with NATO countries

How long will Ukraine be able to fend for itself against Russian aggression if its Western supporters run out of weapons? Alarm bells are ringing as NATO faces a shortage of weapons for Ukraine. Now, officials from the bloc and Britain have urged member nations to increase production. Here's a report.

Russia-Ukraine war: Big win for Kyiv in war with Russia claims NATO

Ukraine has claimed that technology from its Western allies, like the UK, is being used by Russian forces in their electronic warfare, circumventing sanctions.

Using electronic warfare, Russia can interfere with Ukraine’s military equipment, detect drone launches and predict military action. It can also be used to track drones and neutralise them in the air.

In a dossier, the war-torn country urged its allies to rein in the ties of their technological firms with Russia in the face of aggressive electronic warfare.

The dossier addressed to its allies, including the US and UK, sheds light on how they were yet to impose sanctions on firms Ukraine&nbsp;accused of orchestrating Russia’s recent technological advancements on the battlefield.

Technology made by UK firms was being used by Russia to disrupt Ukraine’s military campaign in the East, it alleged.

“The effectiveness of Russian electronic systems largely depends on access to imported components that are widely used in the production of such systems ... Specific steps should be taken immediately to reduce the Russian military-industrial complex’s capability,” the dossier claimed.

<h2>Ukraine concerned</h2>

Ukraine is concerned that Russia’s electronic warfare might jeopardise its drone attack system, giving President Vladimir Putin’s forces a significant advantage on the frontlines.

“[Electronic warfare] is the key to victory in the drone war,” wrote Valery Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, in the Economist.

United States and Germany are reportedly nudging Ukraine to end its war with Russia, German media reported quoting sources, indicating that “war fatigue” and economic problems are making difficult for the NATO allies to back Kyiv.

German tabloid BILD reported that during talks between United States President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in March at the Roosevelt Room, both had agreed to deliberately limit arm supplies to Ukraine and put indirect pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to the peace talks with Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

<h2>'Appropriate amount' of weapons to Ukraine&nbsp;</h2>

The tabloid, quoting an unnamed official, reported that both US and Germany, two primary military donors to Ukraine, intend to supply just an “appropriate amount” of weapons so that Ukraine can maintain its lead and have sufficient room for peace negotiation, but just not enough to reclaim its land.

The German federal government has now set itself the main goal of putting Ukraine in a “strategically good negotiating position,” BILD said.

“The country should negotiate with (Russian dictator) Vladimir Putin's regime about its ‘sovereignty and territorial integrity.’ The White House and the Chancellery are coordinating on this,” government sources told BILD.

Berlin and Washington expect that if Kyiv and Moscow refuse to hold formal negotiations, the issue will remain frozen, and there will be no official accord.

“Zelensky&nbsp;should come to the realisation that things cannot go on like this,” a German government insider told BILD.

<h2>If peace talks fail, then Plan B</h2>

However, if limiting weapon supplies fails to enable Ukraine with peace talks, the source told BILD that US and Germany have a “Plan B” in place.

“What Berlin and Washington are striving for as an alternative to negotiations is a frozen conflict, without agreement between the conflicting parties,” the source said.

US, Germany forcing Ukraine to end war with Russia and ready to accept new boundary: Report

Russian President Vladimir Putin made some of the most explicatory remarks to date about the Ukraine conflict. The Russian President told the leaders at the G20 that it was necessary to think about how to stop the tragedy of the war.

G20 meet: Putin says, 'West willing to overlook aggression in Gaza'; Putin singing a different tune?

Speaking in front of India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the rest of the leaders of Group of Twenty (G20) nations during the virtual summit of the world's wealthiest economies, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the war in Ukraine is a "tragedy".&nbsp;

This was Russian President's first address in front of the G20 leaders since he announced a full-blown offensive on Ukraine in February 2022 which resulted in one of the most significant geopolitical tumults of the 21st century so far after 9/11 attacks.

Putin's offensive pushed previously neutral Finland into US-led transatlantic &nbsp;alliance (NATO). Sweden too formally applied for NATO membership, bringing the US forces (by virtue of them being the NATO allies) closest to Russian borders than they ever were.&nbsp;

Russia has also somewhat managed to evade the impact of American sanctions by sale of crude oil at lower than international prices to a number of countries and utlising the economic potential of its military-industry complex as the war raged on.&nbsp;

"Some colleagues have already said in their speeches that they are shocked by the 'continuing aggression of Russia in Ukraine,'" Putin said on Wednesday (Nov 22).

"Yes, of course, military actions are always a tragedy," he continued.&nbsp;

"Specific people, specific families, and the country as a whole. And, of course, we must think about how to stop this tragedy."

<h2>Russia-Ukraine war: Efforts for peace in past</h2>

Putin has accused Ukraine of failing to end the war despite having launched the offensive himself.&nbsp;

In June 2023, in a meeting with leaders of Africa during a purported summit aimed at initiating peace process between Russia and Ukraine, Putin said Kyiv signed a peace treaty with Moscow in the spring of 2022, and then threw it into 'garbage of history'.

"It was called treaty of permanent neutrality and security guarantees of Ukraine," Putin said, after flapping the supposed draft of the treaty in air, stating: "We never agreed with the Ukrainian side that the text will be confidential but we never showed it before nor commented on it."

"This draft of the treaty was initialled by the leader of the negotiation group from Kyiv. He put his signature. There it exists," he added while showing the supposed draft of the treaty.

Putin speaks about 'tragedy' of Ukraine war in front of India's Modi, other G20 leaders

A senior Russian diplomat said on Tuesday (Nov 21) that co-existing with Ukraine under its current 'regime' is not possible and that Russia can withstand power of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for as long as it needs till Moscow's goal of demilitarising Ukraine was achieved. Currently Russia controls 17.5 per cent of Ukrainian territory in reference to internationally recognised Ukrainian borders. This includes Crimea which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

Rodion Miroshnik, Russia's Ambassador-at-large was speaking with reporters in Russian capital Moscow when he said this.

"The current regime (in Kyiv) is absolutely toxic, we do not see any options for co-existence with it at the moment," he said.

The post held by Miroshenik was created by Russia to collect evidence about alleged crimes committed by Ukrainian forces on civilians. As he spoke with reporters, Miroshevik repeated Russian claims that Ukraine had violated human rights of the civilians and had committed crimes against&nbsp;them. He also alleged that NATO has supplied forbidden weapons to Ukraine.

Ukraine on its part has been accusing Russia of war crimes along with several Western nations. Russia denies the charges.

Miroshenik also said that Russia could resist NATO for as long as it takes for the Russian goal of demilitarising Ukraine is achieved. He added that the West will eventually lose interest in the war.&nbsp;

Russia calls its Ukraine invasion a 'Special Military Operation' (SMO). It invaded Ukraine in February 2022. After sustained gains in initial months, Russian forces had to retreat from large swathes of land. Meanwhile, the Western countries, led by the United States, poured in billions of dollars in Ukraine in humanitarian and military aid. It has also provided a large number and variety of weapons.

However, expectations that Ukrainian forces would be able to decisively push-back the Russians after the help have proven to be far from reality. Ukraine has not been able to push the Russians back and Russian troops are putting up a stiff resistance.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has chosen to project Ukraine war as part of a larger effort of fight against the West. Kremlin claims that there is a ploy to cleave Russia.

Watch | Russia's Putin to take part in virtual BRICS summit on Gaza × The post held by Miroshenik was created by Russia to collect evidence about alleged crimes committed by Ukrainian forces on civilians. As he spoke with reporters, Miroshevik repeated Russian claims that Ukraine had violated human rights of the civilians and had committed crimes against them. He also alleged that NATO has supplied forbidden weapons to Ukraine. Ukraine on its part has been accusing Russia of war crimes along with several Western nations. Russia denies the charges. Miroshenik also said that Russia could resist NATO for as long as it takes for the Russian goal of demilitarising Ukraine is achieved. He added that the West will eventually lose interest in the war. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday (Nov 20) that Washington's support for Kyiv was for the long haul. "The message that I bring you today, Mr President, is that the United States of America is with you, we will remain with you for the long haul," Austin told Zelensky as he paid a visit to Kyiv to reassure Ukraine on US support in its fight against Russia.

In a statement, the Pentagon said that Austin visited Ukraine to meet "with Ukrainian leaders and reinforce the staunch support of the United States for Ukraine's fight for freedom."

"He will also underscore the continued US commitment to providing Ukraine with the security assistance it needs to defend itself from Russian aggression," the statement added. This was Austin's second trip to Ukraine since Russia launched an offensive last year.

Since the beginning of the conflict, the US has provided tens of billions of dollars in security aid for Ukraine and repeatedly pledged to back Kyiv for "as long as it takes."

However, hardline Republican lawmakers have opposed this assistance.

Till now, the US has been the biggest donor of military assistance to Kyiv, and a cut to American aid would be a major blow to Ukraine as it is preparing for the second winter of the war.

Russian media on Monday (Nov 13) reported that the Russian military was withdrawing its troops from the eastern bank of the Dnipro River to “more favourable positions,” only to withdraw the information minutes later.

Two prominent Russian news agencies reported and later retracted the reports.

State news agencies Tass and RIA-Novosti said Russia had repositioned troops to positions east of the Dnipro River, in order to "free up some of its forces, which will be used for offensive operations in other areas".

While Moscow blamed the highly unusual incident on Ukraine, Kyiv claimed it was a Russian disinformation campaign.

The ‘false report’ came exactly a year after Russia withdrew its forces from the right bank of the river, including from the city of Kherson. It must be noted that the Dnipro River continues to separate Russian and Ukrainian forces on the battleground.

<h2>Escalation by Ukrainian forces</h2>

Under its so-called counter-offensive, Ukraine has of late escalated its attacks on Russian forces across the Dnipro River.&nbsp;

The prime objective of this mission is to dismantle Russia’s ‘land bridge’ to the Crimean Peninsula, which has been under Russia’s control since 2014.

A close adviser to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Army was killed on his birthday after a grenade that was placed amongst his birthday gifts exploded.

Initially, the incident was termed as an assassination until further details revealed that Major Gennadiy Chastiakov, 39, had received a box of grenades as a gift.

Some local reports claimed that a real grenade was placed amongst novelty gifts shaped to look like grenades.

Ukraine’s interior minister Igor Klymenko in a statement on Monday (Nov 6) said that Chastiakov was showing his gift to his son when the explosion took place.

“At first, the son took the munition in his hands and began to turn the ring. Then the serviceman took the grenade away from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion,” Klymenko said.

<h2>Real grenade placed among novelty ones&nbsp;</h2>

His 13-year-old son was also seriously injured, Ukrainska Pravda newspaper reported citing the police, and added that Chastiakov’s wife saw her husband bringing the gift box, which had the real grenade, home.

Army Gen Valery Zaluzhny condoled Chastiakov’s death on Telegram.

“Under tragic circumstances, my assistant and close friend, Major Gennadiy Chastiakov, was killed … on his birthday,” Zaluzhny said, adding that an “unknown explosive device detonated in one of his gifts”.

Real grenade placed among novelty ones His 13-year-old son was also seriously injured, Ukrainska Pravda newspaper reported citing the police, and added that Chastiakov’s wife saw her husband bringing the gift box, which had the real grenade, home.
