A New York Times investigation has alleged that Russia has turned Japan into a key hub for espionage, covert procurement, and the sourcing of critical technology used in the Russia-Ukraine war. The report claims Russian intelligence officers operating under diplomatic and commercial cover have exploited Japan's relatively weak espionage laws to acquire sensitive components. Japan has acknowledged the need to strengthen its intelligence and counter-espionage capabilities, with Parliament approving a new national intelligence coordination body. The report also alleges that procurement networks routed military-use technology through intermediary countries to bypass export controls.

Russia-Ukraine War: Kyiv Ramps Up Attack on Russian Fuel Supplies in Black Sea

Russia has launched a devastating overnight attack on Ukraine, deploying over 120 drones and 12 missiles in a strategic strike. Kyiv was hit even before air raid sirens could sound, causing significant damage to residential buildings, offices, and a theological seminary. President Zelenskyy reports at least 11 injured in the capital, with additional strikes reported in Odesa, Sumy, and Kharkiv.

Russian authorities in the Novosibirsk region have urged residents to work from home and limit car travel as the country’s fuel crisis deepens following Ukrainian strikes on key oil refineries. The region, home to nearly three million people, is one of Siberia’s most populous areas and a major center for manufacturing and industry. The advisory comes after Ukraine struck an oil refinery in the neighboring Omsk region earlier this week, disabling one of Russia’s largest oil processing facilities by capacity.

NATO has quietly approved Palantir’s AI system to identify targets in the field. The move signals a major shift in how the alliance fights modern wars — using artificial intelligence to process data, spot threats, and speed up decisions against Russia. Called a “secret AI weapon” by insiders, the system could change battlefield strategy in the Ukraine war and beyond. What does this mean for warfare, accountability, and the future of AI in the military? We break it down.

Zelensky repeated his call for NATO membership despite US President Donald Trump ruling out Kyiv's entry into the Western military alliance. Trump has opposed Ukraine's long-standing bid to join NATO while seeking to bring an end to the war with Russia. The Ukrainian president said the country could manage most of its defence needs on its own but required stronger international support for air defence systems. "We are capable of doing everything else ourselves, but when it comes to air defence, we need our partners' determination," he said. Zelensky also claimed that Ukraine eliminated nearly 28,000 Russian soldiers in June alone and said every casualty had been verified through video evidence. He added that Ukraine had dismantled Russia's belief that it possessed a secure strategic rear by carrying out deep strikes inside the country, including a recent drone attack on an oil refinery in Siberia. “In June alone, nearly 28,000 Russian soldiers were eliminated – and we have video confirmation for every single one of them. The overwhelming majority were struck by drones,” he said. "We have completely eliminated the very idea of Russia having a strategic rear. He also called on European countries to work with Ukraine to develop their own affordable anti-ballistic defence technology.

Kremlin says NATO summit is of 'great interest' as alliance unveils new defence plans

Russia launched another wave of attacks in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with reports of heavy strikes causing damage and raising concerns over Kyiv’s air defenses. The latest escalation comes as the conflict continues to impact security across the region.

Russia-Ukraine War: Russia unleashes firestorm, Kyiv undefended

The Russia-Ukraine war began in February 2022 and has been going on ever since for over four years now. Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, triggering the deadliest war in Europe since World War II. The conflict has not just increased tensions in the region, but also affected supply chains across the world. With no sign of a resolution of the conflict in the near future, the world has been forced to adapt to the shifts it brought to global energy markets, food security, and defence spending.
Energy markets on edge
The war has pushed the energy markets to the edge given Russia’s dominance over global crude oil exports. The sanctions and repeated strikes on its refineries have significantly changed the flow of supply in ways that are still playing out.Through 2025 and 2026, Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have intensified, at times cutting refinery output and tightening fuel availability inside Russia itself. In an unusual event, Russia even had to import refined fuels, including shipments from India. At the same time, tensions in the Middle East have kept traders on alert over potential disruptions to one of the world’s most critical supply regions. Even without full-scale escalation, periodic flare-ups in the region have been enough to push prices higher, tighten insurance costs, and amplify risk premiums across global crude benchmarks. The result is a market that is not short of oil, but short of certainty. Diesel remains the tightest segment, particularly in Europe, where inventories are thin, and price swings remain sharp whenever supply fears emerge. Also read | Inside the 500,000 mobility target: Why Japan wants 50,000 Indian workers
Food markets under persistent pressure
While there were initial fears of food shortages, the concerns have faded. However, the markets have not returned to normal. Both Russia and Ukraine hold a significant share in global wheat and sunflower oil exports. Moscow is also a key player in fertiliser supply. However, since the Black Sea trade route was disrupted in 2022, exports have been rerouted through longer and more expensive channels. While the war has not resulted in a shortage of food supplies, it has pushed prices way up due to longer shipping time, higher insurance costs, and thin margins across the board. In India, the rising cost of fertilisers has affected the agriculture industry.
Defence spending
Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, military budgets have not just increased – they have undergone a major shift. NATO countries have expanded their spending and rebuilt ammunition stocks. They have also accelerated procurement of drones, missile systems and air defence networks. What is different this time is persistence. Defence spending is no longer reacting to a single war. Russia-Ukraine war is reshaping energy, food, defence and trade systems, while India balances energy security, supply risks and strategic autonomy in a volatile geopolitical environment. Here’s what you need to know.

Energy markets on edge The war has pushed the energy markets to the edge given Russia’s dominance over global crude oil exports. The sanctions and repeated strikes on its refineries have significantly changed the flow of supply in ways that are still playing out. Through 2025 and 2026, Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure have intensified, at times cutting refinery output and tightening fuel availability inside Russia itself. Also read | Inside the 500,000 mobility target: Why Japan wants 50,000 Indian workers Food markets under persistent pressure While there were initial fears of food shortages, the concerns have faded. Defence spending Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, military budgets have not just increased – they have undergone a major shift. NATO countries have expanded their spending and rebuilt ammunition stocks. They have also accelerated procurement of drones, missile systems and air defence networks. What is different this time is persistence. Defence spending is no longer reacting to a single war. It is responding to the expectation that instability is now a feature of the system, not an interruption. The Iran war further reinforced this trend beyond Europe, pushing regional governments to increase readiness and procurement cycles. Ukraine's repeated drone strikes on Russian oil refineries and fuel storage facilities have disrupted fuel production and distribution. As a result, several regions in Russia have experienced fuel shortages, causing supply disruptions and higher fuel prices. The shortages have also affected transportation, agriculture, and other industries that depend on a stable fuel supply. In response, Russia has introduced measures to protect domestic fuel availability and reduce the impact of the disruptions.

The impact of Ukraine’s "long-range sanctions"—a campaign of drone strikes targeting Russian energy infrastructure—is hitting home. For the first time since the invasion began, Vladimir Putin has publicly conceded that these strikes are causing "obvious" problems, leading to fuel shortages in over 50 Russian regions.

Russia-Ukraine War: Putin Makes Rare Admission That Ukrainian Strikes Have Disrupted Supplies

Russia has intensified aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities using glide bombs and drones, causing casualties and damage in regions including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Sumy. At the same time, Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian oil refineries and energy infrastructure have created fuel shortages, long queues and rising pressure inside Russia. The conflict is expanding beyond the battlefield, affecting infrastructure and everyday life.

Russia-Ukraine War: Will Ukraine's Offensive Change the Battlefield?

According to Russian military bloggers, new recruits assigned to fight on the frontline in the war against Ukraine could die as soon as 20 to 35 minutes into service. Historian Peter Frankopan wrote in an op-ed for Foreign Policy that, from arrival at the training ground to death in combat, it could all unfold within 10 days to three weeks. The Ukraine war has been going on for more than four years, and critics have been slamming Russia for continuing with the conflict despite the mass casualties among its soldiers. More than 30,000 soldiers either die or are injured every month, with the total number of casualties pegged at one million by Western sources. Frankopan wrote, citing estimates by the bloggers, that Russia is suffering eight casualties for every one lost by Ukraine. According to the report, this is primarily because of the rise in the number of military drones by Ukraine. The country is also carrying out attacks deep inside the country, further paralysing the system.
