Kremlin has 'nothing to say' on reports of Putin-Kim Jong Un summit

A dramatic moment was captured in video footage when a Ukrainian drone smartly managed to dodge three Russian military aircraft that tried to shoot it down.

The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine shared the video in which the drone was seen coming in close contact with one Russian jet and two combat helicopters. What followed was the ultimate chasing sequence between a tiny drone and the heavily fortified aircraft.

In the video, the drone which is just metres away from the Russian air forces can be seen teasing it before a spray of bullets is unleashed towards it by one of the aircraft.

Estonia prime minister under pressure to quit over husband's Russia ties

Pope Francis is facing criticism for telling Russian youths to not give up their "legacy" as heirs of a "great, enlightened Russian empire", referring to the heirs of past tsars such as Peter the Great. Notably, President Vladimir Putin hails them and holds them up as an example to justify the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

On Friday, Pope Francis told young Russians, who were gathered for the All-Russian Meeting of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg that "never give up this legacy, you are the heirs of the great Mother Russia, go forward with it".

Pope said, "Don't forget (your) heredity. You are heirs of the great Russia - the great Russia of the saints, of kings, the great Russia of Peter the Great, of Catherine II, the great Russian empire, cultured, so much culture, so much humanity. You are the heirs of the great mother Russia. Go forward." He was reading the prepared speech in Spanish, but switched in between and started speaking in Italian.

The prepared text of the address was released by the Vatican, but it did not include the last, improvised paragraph. Ukraine responded to the comments, calling them "deeply regrettable".

Oleg Nikolenko, who is the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said on Facebook: "It is precisely with such imperialist propaganda, the 'spiritual ties' and the 'need' to save 'great Mother Russia' that the Kremlin justifies the killing of thousands of Ukrainians and the destruction of Ukrainian cities and villages."

"It is deeply regrettable that such notions of being a great power, which contributes, in essence, to Russia's chronic aggressiveness, are voiced by the pope, either knowingly or unknowingly," Nikolenko added.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk, who is head of Ukraine's Eastern Rite Catholic Church, said in a statement that the Pope's words had caused "great pain and worry" and feared they could "inspire the neo-colonial ambitions of the aggressor country".

Ukraine responded to the comments, calling them "deeply regrettable". Oleg Nikolenko, who is the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, said on Facebook: "It is precisely with such imperialist propaganda, the 'spiritual ties' and the 'need' to save 'great Mother Russia' that the Kremlin justifies the killing of thousands of Ukrainians and the destruction of Ukrainian cities and villages." "It is deeply regrettable that such notions of being a great power, which contributes, in essence, to Russia's chronic aggressiveness, are voiced by the pope, either knowingly or unknowingly," Nikolenko added. Russia sacks 'General Armageddon' not seen since Wagner mutiny; appoints acting chief: Report

Russia and Ukraine continue to be involved in ceaseless drone attacks. Kremlin on Wednesday (August 23) said it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack in the capital city of Moscow but three people were killed in another strike in Russia near the Ukrainian border.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov took to social media to inform about the drone strike.

"Three civilians have been killed. The Ukrainian forces launched an explosive device through a drone when people were on the street," said Gladkov, who added the drone hit a sanatorium in a village.

Experts say that the cancellation of the Black Sea grain deal by Moscow may have added more bitterness to both sides. Since the cancellation, Moscow has been hitting Ukrainian port cities while Kyiv targets Moscow and border areas using drones.

Further adding details, it said that 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the aerial assault. However, it did not specify as to what happened to the other two drones. Russian forces "attacked from the north with 'Shahed-136/131' attack UAVs. A total of 17 attack drones were launched from the Kursk region," the Ukrainian force said on Telegram. It added that air defences were activated in "northern and central, as well as in the western regions". Russia claims it destroyed Ukrainian drone Russian forces on Friday (August 18) said that they had shot down a Ukrainian drone that was targeted at Moscow and its Black Sea Fleet. The drone, according to the reports, disrupted air traffic at all the civilian airports of the Russian capital. The Russian defence ministry and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that there were no casualties after air defences destroyed the drone which plummeted over a non-residential building in the capital city's Expo Center complex on Friday.
Sounding rather defeated, Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat has conceded that his country will not be able to operate the F-16 fighter jets to defend itself from the Russian onslaught, at least this year.

Moscow mayor says 45,000 from the city fighting in Ukraine

Ukrainian fighters earlier detained by Russia from the battlefield have shared horrifying accounts of their experience while in Russia’s detention facility in southwestern Russia.

Interviewed by BBC, over a dozen ex-detainees have claimed they were frequently subjected to torture, a gross violation of international humanitarian laws.

However, BBC clarified that it was not able to independently verify the claims made by the former prisoners of war.

What are the allegations?

Quoted by BBC, the former detainees levelled grave allegations against Russian forces and guards at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility Number Two, in the city of Taganrog.

Men and women were frequently beaten. Russian guards would often hit in the kidneys and chest. Inspections would occur daily and detainees would be subjected to electric shocks.

Through violence, Russian forces would often force the detainees into giving false confessions, which Russia allegedly used as evidence in courts.

One of the captives quoted by BBC said they were often offered very little food and insufficient medical attention, which often led to the death of several inmates.

Russia’s attitude towards the allegations

BBC claimed Russia didn’t respond to the requests for comment; however, Moscow has denied such allegations in previous instances.

Russia-Ukraine war: At least three killed in air strikes on west Ukraine

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has declared on Telegram that his nation will boycott the 2024 Olympic Games scheduled to be held in France’s Paris if Russian and Belarusian athletes are allowed to participate.

He also claimed that during the course of the Russia-Ukraine war, the invading forces have killed at least 340 Ukrainian athletes and coaches, along with destroying 343 sports facilities.

“Ukraine is determined. A powerful international coalition for fair sport, including 35 states, has been formed,” he claimed.

“We are ready to boycott the Olympic Games in Paris together if the Russian Federation and Belarus are allowed to participate in the competition. We expect the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to make the right decision and resolutely suspend the aggressor from the Olympics," his statement added.

Another U-turn from Ukraine?

In a dramatic reversal of policy, the Ukrainian government last month announced that its athletes could participate in sports events where Russian and Belarusian athletes are participating as neutral athletes.

A couple, their 23-day-old daughter, and another man were killed in the village of Shyroka Balka, said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. The couple’s previously critically wounded 12-year-old son later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, he added.

Two people were killed and one person was wounded in the neighbouring village of Stanislav, said Klymenko, adding that the area was struck 12 times with artillery. “The terrorists will never willingly stop killing civilians,” said the Ukrainian minister.

He added, “Terrorists must be stopped. They must be stopped by force. They don’t understand anything else.”

This comes after Ukraine had managed to reclaim the western part of the Kherson region from Russian occupation last November, however, Moscow’s forces have continued regularly shelling the region from across the Dnipro River.

This comes after much opposition to the United States sending cluster munitions to Ukraine.

Ukrainian shelling in Donetsk

Russian-appointed head of the region, Denis Pushilin took to Telegram and said that one civilian was killed in a district of the city of what Moscow calls Donetsk People’s Republic, since claiming to have annexed it. He added that six people were also wounded in Makiivka, which is in the east of Donetsk.

“In total, the enemy fired 127 rounds of ammunition at peaceful cities and regions in the republic,” said Pushilin. He also went on to claim cluster munitions were among the artillery used.

This comes amid reports of both sides using cluster munitions since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Washington sent cluster munitions to Kyiv amid protests and criticism while Ukraine has since vowed to only use them against concentrations of enemy soldiers amid its counteroffensive.
