He also clarified that his team had formulated the character arcs of new entrants Deepika and Tiger and how they would have extended parts in future films. It is not clear yet when Shetty plans to work on the sequels of Simmba and Sooryavanshi. Loved Deepika Padukone as Lady Singham? Rohit Shetty confirms stand alone film on character

Simmba and Sooryavanshi sequels in the works, confirms Rohit Shetty

Rohit Shetty's cop universe introduced two new characters in the recently released Singham Again. The film, the third in the Singham series and the fifth installment in Shetty's cop universe, featured Ajay Devgn in the titular role and also introduced Deepika Padukone as a female cop, aka, 'Lady Singham'. The filmmaker recently confirmed that he has plans to make a standalone film on Deepika's character.

In a conversation with News18, the filmmaker explained why he waited so long to introduce a female cop to the film universe. Talking about it he said, “The wait was to get the right script and the right kind of launch for the character. Till 2018, I wasn’t even sure if there was going to be a cop universe.”

He added that it was during the making of Akshay Kumar’s Sooryavanshi that he conceived the idea of coming up with a Lady Singham. “When Simmba worked, people accepted that we can bring in other characters and create a universe. That’s when we made Sooryavanshi and it was during this film that we thought of making a film with an out-and-out lady cop.”

The filmmaker stated that he had to push Sooryavanshi, due to COVID which was initially going to be released in 2019.

“But then suddenly, the film was in cans for two years and everything got delayed because of that. According to our original line-up, Singham Again was also supposed to release in 2020.”

Shetty confirmed that a female-led cop film is definitely on the cards. “We still have to write it. We do have a concept in mind but we don’t know where we can go with it. There’s still time for that. I know what the character will be like and her basic story arc but I don’t know her whole journey yet as a director or writer. But a female-led cop film headlined by Lady Singham will definitely happen, otherwise, we wouldn’t have introduced her at all. There’s a reason why we’ve emphasised on that character and her name in Singham Again.”

Rohit Shetty's cop universe

The cinematic universe found its inception with Ajay Devgn’s blockbuster 2011 film, Singham. Shetty then made Sooryavanshi and Simmba with Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh respectively. Both actors played cops in the two films, thus making a Cop Universe. Shetty's latest title, Singham Again is the fifth title under his Cop Universe and the third film of the Singham film series. The film introduces two new characters, played by Deepika Padukone and Tiger Shroff.
The filmmaker has already roped in Salman Khan’s Chulbul Pandey for his next with Ajay Devgn, Chulbul Singham.

Loved Deepika Padukone as Lady Singham? Rohit Shetty confirms stand alone film on character

Rohit Shetty took all the precautions to save his movie Singham Again from hot waters. This Diwali, Shetty brought some action to the theatre with the fifth movie of his cop universe and the third instalment in the Singham franchise.

The movie boasts an ensemble cast featuring Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Deepika Padukone, Akshay Kumar and Ranveer Singh among others. While the audience enjoyed a bunch of star appearances, they were left disappointed as there was not a single scene of Ranveer and Deepika together.

Answering this, Shetty said that it was a conscious decision taken as the movie was based on the Hindu epic Ramayana and Ranveer's character was inspired by Lord Hanuman.

Explaining further, Shetty added that he wished to have a scene of the real-life couple in the movie, but Ranveer's character of ACP Sangram Simmba Bhalerao was a reflection of Hanuman. And, he didn't want to take any chance.

Rohit Shetty reveals why Ranveer and Deepika didn't have any scenes together: 'Would have gone wrong'

Can we let the epics be? Rohit Shetty's latest film Singham Again - a part of his elaborate cop universe essembles some of the biggest stars of Bollywood to narrate an unoriginal story and borrows the full plot from Hindu epic mythology Ramayan. But at a time when films like Adipurush and the anime Ramayan are already available in the digital space, how good an idea is it to again refurbish a known story and force-feed it through Shetty's larger-than-life, over-the-top cop universe? Questions such as this and a few more remain unanswered throughout the runtime of the film.

The plot thanks to the makers and a very elaborate trailer (longest for a Hindi film, they claim) is already known. And so when you walk into the theatres, aware of the story, you expect the film to entertain you with its dialogue baazi, its action sequences and more. Yet Shetty's film - the third in the Singham franchise - is formulaic and plays to gallery with predictable moves and lines.

The Plot of Singham Again

In Rohit Shetty's modern-day Ramayan, Ajay Devgn aka Singham is Ram and Kareena Kapoor Khan is Sita who is abducted by Arjun, the Raavan. New entrants Deepika Padukone and Tiger Shroff join the cop universe along with old faces Ranveer Singh and Akshay Kumar and together Singham and his army of braveheart deshbakhts, they head to Sri Lanka to save and rescue Avni. Yes, exactly how it's shown in the trailer- just an elaborate version of the 5 minute trailer where each character is given an extended introduction scene- a fight sequence and a Ramayan parallel, just so that no one ever gets confused as to who plays what.

What works and what does not

The last Shetty film that I had genuinely enjoyed was Simmba. Singh in his over-the-top cop avatar entertained and how! In Singham Again, I desperately waited for the actor's appearance knowing that he would be getting the best lines. And writers Milap Zaveri, Shantanu Srivastava, Vidhi Ghodgaonkar and Shetty do reserve the best lines for Singh who alone uplifts the second half with his buffoonery. Sure it is over the top but it comes as a much-needed respite amid long drawn mythology lesson.

Singham's first half is awfully slow. The action sequences, the picturesque locations of Kashmir, Devgn's swagger and the SUVs do not do much to uplift the film's first half. Deepika and Tiger Shroff's introduction scenes seem straight out of other films that the actors have featured in. Deepika's looks like a character from Shetty's other blockbuster Chennai Express while Shroff seemed to have been recruited directly from the sets of Baaghi while learning Kalaripayattu. Arjun Kapoor grins too much and creates less mayhem for the evil character he is poised as. All black ensemble and an errie background score also don't make this Raavan appear too dangerous.

The film salvages itself in the scenes where Singh uses his perfect comic timing to uplift a generic plot. There are references to Gangs Of Wasseypur, Gadar - all delivered by Singh that make you crack up. The last one hour, when the film is near its climax and all the characters assemble for a huddle much like Avengers, makes the film still worth your time.

Much like Shetty's previous films, Singham Again is visually stunning with rich colours and lots of aerial shots to give the narrative a larger-than-life look. It also has Shetty's quintessential action sequences.

I am all for Bollywood masala potboilers but I do wish the makers took some time out to think of an original plot. How long will they belt out the same story over and over again?

In a film that has formidable actors like Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan playing the lead, one expects the film to be so much more. Yet the two actors seem constricted due to shoddy writing.

Singham Again isn't a bad film but it isn't a great one either. It gets stuck in limbo- treading the tested waters with a story too well known. So many actors join in, yet none leave a defining mark.

Singham Again and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 to not release in Saudi Arabia: Reports

Rohit Shetty's multi-starrer Singham Again is just days away from its big theatrical release. The film's trailer indicates that the plot takes heavy references from Hindu mythological epic Ramayan. Many have speculated whether the film's storyline was changed to make it appropriate for Diwali release. Now, the film's writer Milap Zaveri has opened up about the inclusion of the Ramayan storyline in the film and revealed if the move was intentional.

While speaking to Siddharth Kannan, Zaveri said that the script of Singham Again was much bigger than any of the previous films in the franchise. “On the script level, 1000 per cent. I am yet to watch the final film but on the script level, 100 per cent it is better than the other Singhams. The emotion of Ramayan that Rohit has brought into the script is beautiful. It is going to create a place in every Indian’s heart.”

Zaveri called Rohit the biggest star of the film which features top Bollywood actors including Ajay Devgn, Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, and Akshay Kumar among others.

Milap was asked about the parallels drawn with Ramayan’s story in the film and the writer said that even when the film was scheduled for Independence Day, they had the same storyline.

“The story is by Kshitij Patwardhan. When Kshitij met Rohit, he already had this thought that what if we marry Ramayan with the Singham cop universe and create this story and I think Rohit loved it. This film was originally going to be released on August 15, which has nothing to do with Diwali. The film was delayed at the shooting stage so it just so happened that we are now releasing on Diwali with a film that has Ramayan in it. This is a co-incidence. We haven’t added Ramayan to encash Diwali. Ramayan was in the script right from the start, even when we were not coming to theatres on Diwali,” he said.

Rohit pulled a casting coup of sorts with Singham Again which brings together the biggest of stars in one film and when Milap was asked if there was any friction on set between the stars, he said that he wasn’t on the set every day to observe their dynamics. But, he also added, that Rohit knows how to create a balance on set. “When the captain of the ship is someone like Rohit… the biggest star if you ask me is Rohit Shetty in that entire ensemble. He is such a star director who has got such a legacy that I don’t think any of these frivolous things will happen on his set. Because there is so much clarity, so much command that he has over his set, over his craft. Very few people can bring such a cast together,” he said and added, “I am sure he has handled all of them beautifully and given each of them their respect, position and importance while making the movie.”

Very few people can bring such a cast together,” he said and added, “I am sure he has handled all of them beautifully and given each of them their respect, position and importance while making the movie.” Singham Again releases on November 1, the same day as Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3.

Karwa Chauth ‘Sargi’: Shilpa Shetty shares glimpse of her traditional celebration

It's a casting coup that only Rohit Shetty could have pulled off. The Singham Again trailer was launched amid great fanfare on Monday in Mumbai. The film's nearly 5-minute long trailer features the film's impressive star cast - which includes Ajay Devgn reprising his role as Bajirao Singham, Kareena Kapoor playing his wife, Ranveer Singh as Simmba, Akshay Kumar as Sooryavanshi and introduces Deepika Padukone as Lady Singham and Tiger Shroff as ACP Satya Pattnaik. The film has Arjun Kapoor as the main antagonist.

The 5-minute-long trailer- the longest trailer of any Hindi film to date- is action-packed and gives a sneak peek into the high-octane drama that is all set to unfurl on screen. The film draws parallels to Ramayan with Ajay Devgn getting his army in place to rescue his wife Kareena Kapoor from the clutches of modern-day Ravana - played by Arjun Kapoor.

The film's impressive line-up of actors comes close only to Marvel's Avengers perhaps as it manages to feature Bollywood's top stars together in a film. The trailer launch was attended by Ajay Devgn, Kareena Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Tiger Shroff and Ravi Kishan.
