<p>India skipper Rohit Sharma continued his rich form in ODI World Cup 2023 as he went past 18,000 international runs during the match against England in Lucknow. Rohit played a superb innings of 87 of 101 balls and now has scored 18,040 runs for India in international cricket in 477 innings of 457 matches he has played.</p>

<p>Rohit's runs are fifth most for India in international cricket behind Sachin Tendulkar (34,357 runs), Virat Kohli (26,121 runs), Rahul Dravid (24,064 runs) and Sourav Ganguly (18,433 runs). The Indian skipper also has fourth most international hundreds for India - 45 behind Sachin (100), Kohli (78) and Dravid (48).</p>

<p>Out of his total runs, Rohit has scored 3,677 runs in 52 Tests, 10,423 runs in 256 ODIs, and 3,853 in 148 T20Is. He also has 10, 31 and four hundreds to his name in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively.</p>

<p>The World Cup 2023 might end on November 19, but cricket won’t. Four days after the CWC final in Ahmedabad, India and Australia will lock horns in the five-match T20Is, starting November 23 in Vizag.</p>

<p>Per the latest reports, the selection committee will rest the seniors and the head coach, Rahul Dravid, for this series. In his absence, Dravid’s former teammate and friend, VVS Laxman – the NCA head, will coach the new-look Indian Team.</p>

<p>Every time Dravid is granted rest, Laxman has filled in his shoes. The last time Laxman coached an Indian Team was during the Asian Games 2023 campaign, where they won the gold medal. Before that, Laxman was in charge during the Ireland T20Is, which marked the return of Jasprit Bumrah.</p>

<p>“VVS Laxman has always been in charge when Rahul has taken a break, and the same thing is likely to continue for the series just after the World Cup,” a PTI news agency report quoted a BCCI source as saying.</p>

<p>On Monday (Oct 23), former Indian spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away at the age of 77. The legendary spinner represented India in 67 Tests, ending with 266 wickets. In addition, he played 10 ODIs where he took seven wickets. Bedi ended his career, spanning from 1967 to 1979, ended with 14 five-wicket hauls and a solitary ten-fer in Tests. He is regarded as one of the finest spinners and his passing away has left a huge void in Indian cricket. After the shocking news broke out, many cricketers reacted to his&nbsp;demise&nbsp;and paid their heartfelt tribute.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), former cricketers such as Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble,&nbsp;Gautam Gambhir,&nbsp;Irfan Pathan, Mohammad&nbsp;Azharuddin, Dinesh Karthik, Cheteshwar Pujara paid their heartfelt tribute to Bishan Singh Bedi. <p>Bedi was an orthodox left-arm spinner whose bowling action made heads turn and was described as&nbsp;the most textbook one out there. Apart from outfoxing batters with his spin, the former cricketer also led India. In a clash of the two unbeaten sides in the ten-team tournament, Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Shami's 5 for 54 to dismiss the Kiwis for 273 in 50 overs. In reply, India completed the run-chase in 48 overs courtesy of Virat Kohli's 95, Ravindra Jadeja's 39 not out and Rohit's 46. With this win, India remain the only team to be unbeaten in the ten-team tournament whereas the Black Caps conceded their first game after a four-match winning streak.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the game, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar was in awe of Rohit-led India and feels 'there is no way that India should not be winning the World Cup'. Lauding Kohli, he said on his YouTube channel, Akhtar said, "He is someone who thrives under pressure. Pressure brings opportunities for him. And opportunities are scoring a hundred, playing match-winning knocks and getting followed on Instagram, and why not? This guy deserves it."</p>

<p>Akhtar emphasised on India's batting line-up and said, "Shubman Gill is enough for this New Zealand team. Had Rohit Sharma not got out casually, he is enough. If KL Rahul goes up the order to 3 or 4, even he is enough. India’s batting lineup is very lengthy.&nbsp;Everyone knows what Kohli did today, but Rahul also took the load. Suryakumar had also done so had he not got out."</p>

He has shown his talent and India need to persist with the same bowling attack."</p>

<p>Lastly, Akhtar made a big claim and said, "They have a complete batting and bowling lineup. There is no way that India should not be winning the World Cup."&nbsp;</p>

<p>With India remaining unbeaten after five games and sitting pretty at the top of the points table, Rohit doesn't want the team to lose steam. <h2><strong>Rohit refuses to take foot off the pedal</strong></h2>

<p>“Good start to the tournament. Job is half done. Important to stay balanced. Not to think too far ahead. Important to stay in the present. Shami took the opportunity with both hands. He has experience in these conditions and is a class bowler. At one stage, we were looking at 300 plus. Credit to our bowlers at the back end. I am enjoying my batting. Both are different personalities but we (Him and Gill) complement each other. Happy that we won. There's not much to say. He (Kohli) has done this for us so many years,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.</p>

<p>Chasing 274, India had a good start with Rohit Sharma (46) and Shubman Gill(26) before they lost quick wickets. However, Virat Kohli would lay the foundation for the win as he scored 95 but was unfortunate to miss out on a record-equaling hundred. He was given a good hand by KL Rahul (27) and Ravindra Jadeja (unbeaten 39) to help the side over the line. Suryakumar Yadav was the missing piece in the puzzle having been run out on 2.</p>

<h2><strong>What happened in the New Zealand innings?</strong></h2>

<p>Mohammed Shami, playing in his first match in the ODI World Cup proved a point as he was on the show with India restricting New Zealand to 273 in their 50 overs. Shami grabbed his opportunity with both hands and scalped Will Young (17) on the first ball of his spell. He also played an important role in breaking the Rachin Ravindra (75) and Daryl Mitchell (130) partnership getting the former out when they had stitched 159 runs for the third wicket.</p>

<p>Shami would return to haunt the Kiwis when he scalped Mitchell Santner (1) and Matt Henry (0) on back-to-back balls. He was on a hat-trick in the 48th over but could not get over the line to join the elite company. He would later dismiss the impressive Mitchell with Virat Kohli catching him in the deep and completing the five-for. It is the third time he has taken a five-for in ODI cricket and continues to impress in his third World Cup stint.</p>

<p>India will next take on England in Lucknow on Sunday (Oct 29) before they play Sri Lanka and South Africa. A couple of more wins will see them guarantee a spot in the last four as Team India ride high. New Zealand will next take on arch-rivals and neighbours New Zealand on Saturday as they look for a lift.</p>

Gavaskar has suggested the Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian thinktank to bring in Mohammed Shami in place of Bumrah.</p>

<p>Former Australia skipper and two-time ODI World Cup winner Ricky Ponting has lauded India skipper Rohit Sharma for his 'laid back' attitude and ability to cope with pressure. Ponting's comments come after India won their first three games in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, including wins against Australia and Afghanistan.</p>
