Team India Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant will no longer play any role in the remaining part of this Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after suffering a broken toe in the just-concluded Manchester Test against England. After recovering in time from the finger injury he suffered during the Lord’s Test, Pant broke his right toe on day one at Old Trafford. Like how he did not keep wickets at Lord’s and just batted across both innings, he did the same in Manchester, although he did not get to bat in India’s second innings following a confirmed fracture. After getting ruled out of the Oval Test, Pant took to his social media to post a heartfelt message for his fans. On his X handle, Pant posted a few pictures of his fractured right foot, alongside a slide with the following text on it, which read, “Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way. The visitors now lead by just 133 runs, and with Joe Root (11*) and Ollie Pope (20*) unbeaten, England will eye a substantial first-innings advantage. Earlier in the day, India’s innings was marked by a moment of immense courage from Rishabh Pant. Battling a fractured right foot, Pant walked out to bat and compiled a heroic 54 off 75 balls, helping India go past 350 on a seamer-friendly surface. His brave knock was the emotional high point of the day and drew praise from all quarters. England, however, came out with aggressive intent. Duckett, in particular, was ruthless against India’s wayward pace attack. Both openers found boundaries at will, reaching their half-centuries at a rapid pace — Crawley in 73 balls, Duckett in just 46. Despite the introduction of Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja, the boundary flow didn’t stop. India finally broke through in the 33rd over when Crawley edged Jadeja to KL Rahul at first slip, falling for 84. Duckett continued to attack, hammering three boundaries in one Siraj over, but perished on 94 when he slashed at a wide ball from debutant Anshul Kamboj and was caught behind by Dhruv Jurel — giving the young pacer his maiden Test scalp. Root and Pope then steadied the innings, opting for a more cautious approach as India looked for inroads with the second new ball. Bumrah came close to dismissing Root, but an LBW appeal was overturned due to the ball’s impact being outside off. By stumps, England had firmly seized the momentum, with their aggressive top-order performance setting up an opportunity to claim a significant first-innings lead and put India under pressure going forward.

In a massive development in Rishabh Pant’s injury update, the Indian keeper-batter will bat in the first and second innings of the ongoing fourth Test at Old Trafford, per the team’s requirement, the BCCI confirmed in a social media statement. Meanwhile, late on day one, Pant’s failed attempt at reverse sweeping Chris Woakes’ Yorker resulted in his second injury of the series. IND vs ENG 2025: Will Rishabh Pant bat in Manchester Test? Here's what rule says

IND vs ENG, 4th Test: ‘This game needs Pant,' Ex-England captain prays for Rishabh’s speedy recovery

Rishabh Pant is back in the news, but this time for a gruesome foot injury he suffered during day one of the Manchester Test against England. Pant was batting on 37 when a failed reverse-lap off Chris Woakes resulted in him cracking his right foot, with a golf cart needed to take him off the field. Although BCCI’s official update reads that the medical team is monitoring his injury, former cricket great and Pant’s IPL coach Ricky Ponting fears a potential ‘metatarsal injury’, suspecting a fracture. Should that be the case, Pant would get ruled out of the ongoing Test, or perhaps this series, which Team India trails by 1-2. Pant looked in utter pain after the ball ramped onto the top-right side of his foot, which seemed even worse after he took off his shoe. Ponting, who worked with Pant during his time at the Delhi Capitals, fears the Indian keeper could be out for the remainder of this series in a massive blow to the visitors. WATCH VIDEO -

"He (Pant) hardly put his foot on the ground. He rolled around for 6-8 minutes before the golf cart came in. The immediate swelling was the worry for me. I've had a metatarsal injury myself, and they're small, fragile bones," Ponting said of Pant’s foot injury. "The fact that he couldn't put any weight on it doesn't look good at all. If it's broken, he will be out of the game. If it's not, then they will do anything they can to get him back out there. Hopefully, he doesn't play any more reverse sweeps. "For Indian fans, keep fingers crossed and hope it is not as serious as it looks. If he is out of the remainder of the game, then that leaves a massive dent on India's chance, not only in this game, but the remainder of the series," he added. Pant’s injury did dent India’s momentum on day one, with Sai Sudharsan, who walked into the XI in place of under-fire Karun Nair, losing his wicket soon after, with two all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur, taking control of India’s innings.
‘Pant could be out for the series’
Besides Ponting, broadcaster Michael Atherton also suspects the same fate for Pant, saying he looks unlikely to play any part in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy; and should this be the case, India will fall on the back foot with the series and history on the line. "If he is out of the game...if he's out of the series, then that's a massive blow to India and puts the day in a different light. That 264 for four becomes 264 for five, and with that new ball due, there is a potential to knock India over reasonably swiftly tomorrow. But if he returns to bat, he could change the game. So there is an uncertainty which we don't know. But it looked like a quite serious injury, because you don't get carted off otherwise," Atherton said of Pant’s injury.

Rishabh Pant injury update: Massive blow to India as fracture suspected for keeper-batter

India's wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant suffered an injury on the opening day of the ongoing fourth Test against England being played at the Old Trafford cricket ground on Wednesday (July 23). Pant was driven off the field in an ambulance after suffering a serious injury to his right foot. The incident happened in the 68th over of India’s innings when Pant, in his trademark audacious style, attempted a reverse sweep to a fuller, slower ball from Chris Woakes. But the execution didn't went as planned — the ball hit his boot, leaving him writhing on the pitch in excruciating pain. England briefly appealed for an LBW, but attention quickly shifted to Pant’s injury. Replays showed a faint under-edge had saved him, but that was of little relief. Pant was in visible distress — barely able to stand, with swelling and bleeding pointing to a potentially serious injury. With his finger having already been injured during the last Test match, this injury will add to Pant's physical misery. The physio hurried over to examine the damage, and after a short effort at attempting to have him walk, it was obvious he couldn't play any further. Ambulance was called in to take him off, with Pant holding onto his leg. Pant's injury is a blow for India, who are pursuing a series-levelling win to keep their series hopes alive in England. The team is currently 2-1 down after three Tests. Pant injured his finger while keeping during the first innings of the last Test at Lord's and was unable to keep later in the match. Sai made his return to the playing XI with a half-century and India would be hoping that Sudharsan keeps going at the same momentum.

IND vs ENG: Pant chases history at Lord’s as Sehwag’s long-standing record on cusp of being broken

India Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant says that the Dukes ball going soft and out of shape is 'irritating players.' Pant himself got irritated in the first Test at Headingley and threw the ball on the ground not amused for which he was reprimanded as well. The sentiment, however, isn't only from India but host England as well. Check list"I feel it is a big problem because the ball is getting out of shape," Pant said ahead of the third Test. "In this series, the ball is getting de-shaped (out of shape) too much. That is something I've never seen. It is definitely irritating for the players because every ball plays differently. When it becomes softer, sometimes it doesn't do too much, but as soon as you change the ball it starts to do something. As a batsman, you keep on adjusting to that, but at the same time, it is not good for cricket overall."Stokes also echoed the same views and said: "Whenever we have touring teams visiting, there is an issue with the balls going soft and completely out of shape. I don't even think the rings that we use are Dukes rings. It isn't ideal. But you have to deal with it."
Archer, Bumrah set to return
After a 336-run loss in second Test at Edgbaston, England not only have asked for 'something more' at Lord's but included Jofra Archer in the playing XI as well. India, on the other hand, will have Jasprit Bumrah back for the match after being rested for the second Test to manage workload. With two express pacers and pitch promised to offer help, the Lord's Test could give a break from run-scoring that has been witnessed in the first two sets.
