IND vs ENG: Rishabh Pant adds another feather to hat, becomes first Asian batter to achieve THIS feat in SENA

Rishabh Pant loves playing Test cricket; he loves scoring runs in Test cricket, and, the best part is, he is not even greedy about the records he often breaks in Test cricket. The left-handed batter was among runs in the second innings at Edgbaston, hitting a valiant 69 off 58, including three sixes and eight fours. However, as chirpy as he is behind the wickets in his turn, the opposition players also love a little banter with him when he bats; such was the case between Pant and Harry Brook on day four of the second Test in Birmingham. Though whatever was said was in all humour, Pant’s reply was full of humility. Sometime around when Pant was batting in the second innings, Brook, standing in the slips, and keeper Jamie Smith tried getting under Pant’s skin with a subtle dialogue about scoring runs quickly. Although Pant’s style of play is daring and entertaining, keeping everyone involved, including the opposition, his game awareness is what separates him from the rest. Also read | IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Shubman Gill hits peak form in Edgbaston, becomes 1st Indian in 54 years to achieve THIS feat At a time when he and India captain Shubman Gill, who completed his third hundred of this series, second in this Test, were playing per the plan, deploying caution and attacking the loose ones, Brook reminded him of a fastest Test hundred record (scored in 55 balls), perhaps pushing him to play quicker and giving England a chance to dismiss him. After Brook said, ‘The fastest I’ve done is 55 balls (and) you could have done that today,’ Pant replied, ‘It’s okay. His statement truly tells about who he is. A batter, who often gets out in the nineties, more time than most players ever have, cannot be greedy for records. He, however, set a few during the first Test in Leeds, having scored twin tons in the series opener. Meanwhile, it was his team skipper Gill, who broke several records with his marathon 161 in the second innings. The right-handed batter now holds a record for most runs by an Indian batter in a Test match (430), surpassing Sunil Gavaskar’s tally and the second highest overall after England’s Graham Gooch’s 456 against India at Lord’s in 1990. India scored 427 for six declared in their second innings, setting England an improbable-looking target of 608 with less than four sessions remaining.

Retired India spinner Ravi Ashwin says that current India batter, which are touring England for five Tests, need to extend their batting time and not necessarily runs to give themselves best chance to win. The comments come on the back of India's five-wicket loss in the first Test at Headingley where England chased down a mammoth 371-run target. India were 333/4 in the second innings before a collapse saw them getting bowled out for 364 towards the end of day 4 and gave England a chance to win. The hosts, batting at brisk pace, scored 350 runs on the final day - leaving India ruing the second innings collapse. Also Read - IND vs ENG: Advantage England as Jofra Archer returns to squad for second Test"One thing that the Indian team's batting can focus on is in every innings, can you extend your batting with time -- not by runs. Increase the amount of time England is fielding and increase the amount of time you keep them on the field. When you didn't extend your batting into Day 5, the game was over. This England team has openly advertised that they will go for the target whatever may be the target. So as a batting lineup, we've to keep in mind that we have to give them less time but give a bigger target,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. The offie also had a word of praise for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who scored two magnificent hundreds in the match - only the second wicketkeeper-batter in history to achieve the feat - and compared him to Virat Kohli."Rishabh Pant should be compared with the likes of Virat Kohli. He is a mainstream batter. Because he has got so much time. Some of these special batters have that knack of picking the ball early. The offie also had a word of praise for wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who scored two magnificent hundreds in the match - only the second wicketkeeper-batter in history to achieve the feat - and compared him to Virat Kohli. "Rishabh Pant should be compared with the likes of Virat Kohli. He is a mainstream batter. Because he has got so much time. Some of these special batters have that knack of picking the ball early. They pick the line quickly, pick the length quickly and they get into lovely positions. Rishabh Pant is one of those rare players who has got that special skill," Ashwin added. Pant, by reaching the 91-run mark, also broke MS Dhoni's record of most runs by an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in a Test (home or away).

At Headingley in Leeds, he overtook Moin Khan's record of 135 runs in a Test the first two runs (four in his case) of his innings. Moin had scored 105 and 30 not out in in a 1996 Test.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: Pant follows Bumrah's footsteps, breaks 29-year-old Pakistan record in SENA countries

Not entirely happy with the denied request for a ball change midway through day three of the Leeds Test, Indian keeper-batter Rishabh Pant threw the ball in frustration in front of the umpire, leading to an unpleasant sight for cricket fans. Pant, who completed his third Test hundred on English soil on day two, made headlines for showing frustration over the on-field umpire’s call during England’s first innings. The moment occurred during the 63rd over when Pant approached on-field official Paul Reiffel with a complaint regarding the ball’s shape. Following a close look at it, the umpire denied his request, asking Indian bowlers to continue bowling with the same ball. That rejection, however, didn’t seem to sit well with Pant, who threw the ball away in frustration, with seamer Jasprit Bumrah also joining the conversation later on. Despite being approached persistently with a request for a ball change, Reiffel denied it altogether. Siraj, who was bowling that over, continued with the same ball. He later picked up Ben Stokes’ wicket, caught behind on 20. Also read | IND vs ENG, 1st Test: 'Cheeky' Indian commentator lauds Bumrah, draws parallels with Kiwi veteran
Watch Video –

Meanwhile, England clearly was the better team in the first session on day three. Despite losing two wickets, they added over 100 runs to their overnight tally, with Harry Brook completing his first fifty of the series. England started day three with centurion Ollie Pope and Brook at the crease. After hitting a few fours early on, Pope edged one to the keeper off Prasidh Krishna on 106. Stokes joined Brook in the middle, and the pair began stitching a stand, dominating India. Several boundaries, some classy and daring ones against Bumrah, had India on the back foot; however, following this Pant incident, the Indian quicks bowled with more fire, resulting in Stokes' wicket. Soon after, Brook and Jamie Smith continued with England’s Bazball style, hitting boundaries for fun. Shortly before lunch was taken on day three, Brook completed his fifty – his first of this five-match Test series. Meanwhile, Pant created history on day two at Headingley, when he surpassed the veteran MS Dhoni’s Test century tally (6), with his seventh Test hundred, his third in the UK – the most by any touring keeper before.

From Shubman Gill to Rishabh Pant: 5 Indian batters with most centuries in WTC history

Bought for a whopping $3.1m (INR 27 crore) at the IPL auction in November last year, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant starred for Team India in the ongoing first Test against England at Headingley in Leeds, hitting his record third Test hundred in the whites on English soil. Although his form for LSG in IPL 2025 worried his team owner, Sanjiv Goenka, the business tycoon took to his social media handle to laud Pant for his historic feat. Meanwhile, once trolled for publicly lashing out at the former LSG captain KL Rahul last season, Goenka celebrated his team’s results this time. “Three’s a charm with brilliant centuries from @ybj_19, @ShubmanGill, and now @RishabhPant17. Rishabh reaching his ton with a six speaks volumes about the future of Indian cricket. A commanding start to the series. #INDvsENG,” Goenka wrote on his X handle.

IND vs ENG, 1st Test: Gill's India take Bazball head-on to usher in new Test era

England may have invented Bazball (attacking batting style) but it was Rishabh Pant on day 1 (Jun 20) of the first Test against England at Headingley who showed how it is played. Coming in to bat shortly after Yashasvi Jaiswal's dismissal just after lunch, Pant smacked his second delivery of the innings over the the bowler's head for a four to clearly show his intentions and how he was going to play in the innings. The bowler was England skipper Ben Stokes, who had taken a wicket in the over already, could not stop laughing about Pant's audacity. Also Read - IND vs ENG: Jaiswal breaks 58-year-old record with stunning hundred at HeadingleyThe ball which dismissed Jasiwal was a ripper and took his off stumps through his defence despite the batter being on 101 - first ever ton by an Indian opener at Headingley. Pant also reached his fifty in the last session of the day - making him the most successful Indian wicketkeeper-batter in terms of runs in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) along with 3,000-run mark in Test cricket. His century partnership with skipper Shubman Gill - who become the first Indian skipper to score a ton in England vs England in his maiden Test as captain - put Indian in a commanding position as they reached 350-run mark for loss on only three wickets.India went in the Test match as an underdog with no Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara or Ravi Ashwin - a first since 2011 - but came out triumphant for sure. It was, however, a debut to forget for Sai Sudharsan who had earlier gotten his Test cap from Pujara. The southpaw was dismissed for a duck on the stroke of lunch on a nothing, going-towards-leg delivery in his first ever innings for India in whites.

For any other batter, the dismissal would have put a seed of doubt in the mind and some caution but not for Pant. The Indian wicketkeeper-batter dismissed Stokes as a net bowler. Rishabh Pant took the bullets, but he wasn’t alone - What went wrong for LSG in IPL 2025

In the IPL, talent comes at a price and sometimes, a very hefty one.
The 2025 IPL mega auction saw teams dig deep into their wallets, chasing big names with even bigger bids. Rishabh Pant went to Lucknow Super Giants for a jaw-dropping ₹27 crore, while Punjab Kings splashed ₹26.75 crore on Shreyas Iyer. These were eye-popping figures, but did the batters live up to the price tag?
As the league stage winds down, it's time to break down the price tag to see whether the franchise's investment in the players gave better returns.
Here's how much each run cost the top five most expensive batters in IPL 2025.
1. Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant was picked up for a massive $3.21 million (₹27 crore) in the IPL 2025 auction by Lucknow Super Giants, but his performances haven’t matched the price tag. In 11 matches, he has scored only 128 runs, which means every single run has cost his team around $25,078 (₹21.42 lakhs).
2. Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer was signed by Punjab Kings (PBKS) for $3.18 million (₹26.75 crore), and he has delivered a steady season so far. With 405 runs in 11 games, each of his runs has come at a cost of about $7,582 (₹6.70 lakhs). He’s been more consistent than most in the top-paid list and his captaincy has helped Punjab be in the top 2 of the points table.

3. Venkatesh Iyer
Venkatesh Iyer was bought for $2.83 million (₹23.75 crore), but the returns haven’t been up to his price tag. He has managed just 142 runs in 11 matches, which means every run has cost KKR $ 19,929 (₹17.02 lakhs).

4. Jos Buttler
Gujarat Titans(GT) picked Jos Buttler for $1.88 million (₹15.75 crore), and he’s proven to be worth every penny. With 500 runs in just 11 matches, each run has cost the team only $3,760 (₹ 3.21 lakhs), the best value per run among the top five expensive batters. He is just 10 runs behind the orange cap leader Suryakumar Yadav.
5. KL Rahul
KL Rahul came into the season with a price tag of $1.67 million (₹14 crore). He has scored 381 runs in 10 games for Delhi Capitals. That brings his cost per run to around $4,383 (₹3.74 lakhs).
As IPL 2025 nears its end, it's clear that spending big doesn’t always guarantee big returns. While some top-priced batters like Shreyas Iyer and Jos Buttler have delivered, others have struggled to match expectations for their price tag. In a tournament as competitive as the IPL, every run and every penny truly counts.
Sometimes, the question should be asked: Do players fall to the pressure of high price tags?

Iceland Cricket, which is famous for its light-hearted and often irreverent commentary on the sport, has again been making news by putting out a satirical "IPL 2025 Frauds and Scammers XI" on social media. Presented as a tongue-in-cheek criticism, the pseudo team includes top players who, in their opinion, have underachieved in the current IPL 2025 season. Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is leading the charge, and he has been jokingly appointed as the captain of the team.
It was posted on a rainy Reykjavík day and captioned, "On a rain day in Reykjavik, we give you our Indian Premier League 2025 frauds and scammers team," signaling its plainly satirical intention. Although full of jokes, the post created a buzz around the cricket fraternity with most widely discussing and arguing about it with varied opinions.

Inclusion of players such as Pant and Iyer seems to be made on the basis of their poor stats. Pant, back from a lengthy layoff for injuries in competitive cricket, has hit just 128 runs in 11 games at a strike rate less than 100—way short of the expectations from a star batter. Venkatesh Iyer too has hit just 142 runs in that number of innings. Both players were among the most expensive buys in the 2025 auction as well, which gives the satire even more relevance.
The satirical lineup has evoked mixed reactions. Some commentators and fans enjoyed the satire as a way of light-hearted criticism and an interesting spin on player performances. Others warned that such descriptions—particularly using the terms "fraud" and "scammer"—were damaging, especially when aimed at athletes going through slump or recovery periods from injuries.
Despite the divided reception, Iceland Cricket's tweet has managed to get everyone talking. In a season where performances are being questioned more than ever before, this tongue-in-cheek remark highlights the intense pressure atmosphere of the IPL and the fine line between fanhood and criticism.
