Even Josh Tongue, who made his debut in the Lord's Test, also returned with 3 for 98 and 2 for 53 in the two innings. Thus, Ponting feels the veteran speedster can be dropped for the Leeds Test with the series on the line for Stokes &amp; Co.&nbsp;

We haven't seen that in the series so far."

"And that's not a direct criticism of James Anderson. He's been one of the all-time greats of the game, his longevity and his wicket-taking ability, but if I was looking at the bowlers I saw last week, I think he's the one that's looked to have the least amount of penetration," Punter stated.

He added, "(Ollie) Robinson's had less penetration, but he's probably actually bowled a bit better. He's been in control of the game more than Anderson has. They've still got a few questions there with Moeen. Do they risk going into the game again and having the same (injury) happen?"

"I doubt that he would have bowled enough between the end of Edgbaston and the start of Headingley for them to be 100 per cent convinced that he's going to be physically right to bowl a lot of overs in a Test match. It could get down to the stage where they're bowling last at Headingley and they might need someone like him to bowl 25 or 30 overs in an innings, Ponting concluded."

"And even talking to Brendon, his family is only just arriving today. When you've got kids that are in school, moving them around, that's not what I want to do," he added.

It would have been very interesting had Ponting agreed to coach Australia's arch-rival team in world cricket. At present, England are doing pretty well in the red-ball format ever since McCullum took over&nbsp;last year. They have beaten teams like India and South Africa at home, whitewashed Pakistan in Pakistan, drew a two-match series versus hosts New Zealand early this year and now have a litmus test in the remainder of&nbsp;Ashes 2023.

England will certainly look to back their attacking style of play and aim to&nbsp;level the series in the second Test at Lord's, starting next week.

“For that fact, I can't wait for the Ashes to start.

“I'm really intrigued to see what conditions England want to play that style of cricket. Because if they want the flatter wickets with the smaller boundaries, it might just backfire on their bowling group. That's the biggest thing for me,” the former Aussie captain added.

England have been well prepared for the Ashes and will look to regain the holy grail for the first time since 2015. The hosts will be favourites going into the contest having won 11 of the 13 matches played since Stokes took over the captaincy which was coupled with Brendon McCullum’s theory of a win-at-all-costs mentality.

England were beaten comprehensively 0-4 in the last Ashes of 2021-22 and were brought down to their knees. Joe Root’s side was not in great nick of form, which ultimately cost them a place in the final of the WTC despite 10 wins in their last 12 Test matches of the cycle.

While the consensus says India might go ahead with Bharat for that one spot, many feel, including Ponting, that going with Kishan will be a better choice. &nbsp;

"If I was them [India], knowing the importance of this game - and you have to win this Test match - I'd be going with Ishan Kishan in this game," Ponting said, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

"He provides that little bit of X-factor that you need when you might be pushing for a win in a Test match. Obviously, if Rishabh Pant is fit, he is playing, and he provides that X-factor for India. "Their payment system in the Caribbean compared to some of the franchise leagues, it doesn't match up, and Sri Lanka will be the same, and Bangladesh will be the same,” Ponting added.

Ricky said while the those countries have struggled regarding pay disparity, big boys like India, Australia and England have managed to keep the youngsters growing up motivated to play Test cricket.

He added that ICC must play a role in settling this nonplus issue that will lead towards the darker end for Tests if not resolved at the earliest.

"It is not the case in India, England and Australia. You are paid well to play Test cricket for your country, and most aspire to play the Test match game. There is a role to play for the ICC here.

"...make the payments bit more even across international Test cricket to attract players from these different countries who want to play for their country," Ponting said, as quoted by PTI.

Although he mentioned that talks at the highest level are ongoing on this topic, Ponting said with countries like India and Australia investing in the longest format, both are far from facing such a scenario.

"It is something that has been spoken about at a very high level at the ICC to help that, but in India the feeling I get is that most of these youngsters aspire to wear the baggy blue cap and the same in Australia," Ponting concluded.

Ponting asserted, "I think it'll be India's top order against Australia's fast bowling, It's a bit of a mouth-watering thought going forward."

"Generally, we think about the battles between India's spinners and Australia's batters. But will that be negated by the wicket at The Oval? Normally the wickets that I've played on at The Oval have started as really good batting wickets, and actually have offered a little bit to the spinners as the game's going on."

"That's what I'd like to see in this wicket - to have a really good contest on day four, day five, or maybe even day six, seeing how it's going," the Delhi Capitals (DC) coach added, who will be part of the commentary panel for the mega finale next month.

A source, according to the report, told PTI that poor results are going to have its repercussions, although no changes would be done mid-season.

"Obviously, nothing will happen mid season but the poor result for two successive season will have it's share of repercussions when JSW and GMR, the two co-owners sit back and take stock of the season," the source aware of the developments informed PTI.

"So you will certainly not have this jumbo coaching staff next season for sure. There will be a few heads that might roll," the source added further.

In their opening match of the season, Delhi Capitals conceded 193 against Lucknow and manage just 143 while chasing. In the next match DC could manage only 162 in their 20 overs which Gujarat Titans chased with six wickets in hand.

Bowling first in their third match against Rajasthan Royals, DC bowlers were taken to cleaners for 199 in 20 overs but the batsmen could only score 142 in reply. Playing against Mumbai Indians, DC folded for 172 and Mumbai chased the target in exact 20 overs with six wickets in hand.

Coming into the match against RCB, DC's batting faltered once more as they scored just 151 in 20 overs while chasing 175.

According to Ponting, Surya can win India the World Cup, despite having been out for three golden ducks in the recently concluded ODI series. The India batter will look to return to form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), where MI lost their opening match to Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"Everyone around the world knows what Surya [Suryakumar] can do in white-ball cricket. They should stick with him, I feel," Ponting told the ICC Review.

"Because he is I think the kind of player that can win you a World Cup.

"He might be a little bit inconsistent but he's the sort of guy who in big moments can win you something," Ponting said.

The former Aussie captain drew Surya’s comparison with late all-rounder Andrew Symonds, who tragically lost his life in 2022. According to Ponting, Surya is playing a similar role to that of his former teammate.

"A bit like the late great Andrew Symonds did for Australia.

"When you invest in these guys, you give them an opportunity, you give them a pretty clear direction and get some clarity around the role you want them to play, they've got so much talent that they can single-handedly win you games.

Talking on the prospect of match-winning players, Ponting reckons India should use all the players at their disposal. The Indian team will have the privilege of using Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, with the latter still nursing an injury.

"That's definitely the way that I'd look at it for India. I wouldn't be playing it safe, I'd be going with match-winning players and I think he's a match-winner," he said.

Suryakumar, in 21 ODI innings, has scored 433 runs at an average of 24.05 with two half-centuries but was dismissed for three consecutive ducks in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia. He will next take the field on Saturday, April 8 against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and will look to return to form.

Ponting said that given so much dew in the evening, DC should have made the most of this chance, but because they had leaked so many runs in the beginning, they were always playing the chasing game and faltered eventually. “We conceded 16 sixes in our bowling innings, and that goes to show, we were off with our execution. When you give away that many, it’s hard to drag yourself back into the game. I didn’t think it was a 190-plus wicket. There was a lot of dew there, if anything, the wicket was probably better for us batting second, so there are a few reasons why we lost the game,” Punter added. Ponting heaps praise on Mark Wood Mark Wood was impressive in his first game as a Lucknow player, picking up his maiden IPL five-for (5/14). Looking impressed with how he bowled, Ponting said he expected nothing less from Wood, and with the way he traumatised DC batters with the sheer pace early on, he deserves all the credit. “He was outstanding. He bowled the way we thought he would bowl. We knew he’d bowl fast and attack the stumps, and he used his bouncer really well. He is a world-class fast bowler. I honestly feel that this is going to be his biggest season in the IPL. He just has that different look in his eye this year. You can see, he’s hungrier than ever," said Punter.

The former Aussie batsman was confident of Shaw making it big this season and said that he feels that the upcoming season is going to be defining&nbsp;for the Mumbai batsman.

"It just seems to me that this season, something has really clicked with Prithvi. I actually said to him at the end of the training two days ago, ‘This game, if you don’t pay full attention to it, it’ll take away from you. But if you put in the hard yards, it will give back to you all the time.’ That’s why I feel that this could be a really big year for him," he added.

Shaw, who made his debut with Delhi in 2018, has been associated with the franchise ever since. In 63 IPL games so far, Shaw has scored 1588 runs at a strike rate of 147.45, managing 12 50+ scores and a highest of 99.
