"I watched him a little bit in Adelaide and it almost looked like he changed things up too much,” Ponting contined.

“Scott Boland was bowling and he changed his guard, he moved across to the off stump, presented his front pad to Boland, and Boland got him out with a full straight one.

"If anything, I think he needs to back himself a little bit more, needs to back his defensive technique a little bit more here in Australia and still find a way to be able to score and score quickly," added the former Aussie skipper.

Gill has scored only 60 runs so far in three innings he has batted in, with a highest score of 31.

India's performance with the bat has been sub par on the tour with only KL Rahul being consistent among the top seven batters. Rahul, who was slotted into the opener's slot due to skipper Rohit Sharma's absence from the first Test, has scored 235 runs in six innings with two fifties to his name.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is India's second highest run-scorer with 193 runs, but most of his runs - 161 to be exact - came in one innings.&nbsp;

“It seems as though the skill of the modern Indian batsmen of playing spin is probably not what it used to be,” he added.

The former Aussie skipper pointed out the changing nature of pitches in India which now favour pacers more than spinners as one of the reasons for Indian batters' dwindling ability to spin.&nbsp;

“Maybe because they're playing on different wickets in India that are probably for the fast bowlers a bit more, maybe because there's more high-quality fast bowlers in India now that they're not playing as much spin bowling as they did,” the former Aussie skipper explained.

He also mentioned IPL and the aggressive nature of batting among modern batters as another reason.

“Maybe it's the IPL or how much IPL cricket they're playing that the younger players are learning the game that way rather than the way that players did 15 or 20 years ago,” Ponting opined.

India are next due to play Australia in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series comprising of five Tests.

India's tour of Australia begins on November 22 in Perth before the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from December 14-18 &nbsp;before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. The last and final Test will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from January 3-7.&nbsp;

Ponting, a batting great himself, refused to judge Kohli for his lean patch, saying great players should never be questioned, and Kohli falls in the same category.

“I’ve said it before about Virat — you don’t ever question the greats of the game. There’s no doubt he’s a great of the game. He loves playing against Australia. In fact, I know he loves playing against Australia. And his record (in Australia) is very good. If there’s a time for him to turn it around, it’d be this series. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Virat make runs in the first game,” Ponting said to ICC.

Since the start of this year, Virat’s Test average reads 22.72 from six games – his lowest in Tests in a calendar year since 2011. The dip in his form also resulted in Kohli falling out of the top 20 batters in the ICC Test Rankings for the first time in his career.&nbsp;

Though Ponting remains aware of the threat Kohli brings with him, he showed concern over his stat that reads Virat has scored just two Test hundreds in the past five years.&nbsp;

In a media statement on Thursday (Oct 17), the franchise said, "Key decisions like auctions, captaincy, player release and retentions of both teams will be made by the Delhi Capitals' board, and will be decided mutually by senior leadership of both groups."

<h2>Badani’s impressive CV urged DC</h2>

Despite having had several top names in the leadership group before, DC ownership seemed impressed by Badani’s CV as a coach. Badani has been a successful coach in the domestic T20 circuit. During his early days in the IPL, Badani was part of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) backroom staff before joining Chepauk Super Gillies in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), winning the title three times with them.

Besides, Badani joined SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) as a fielding coach and scout in IPL 2022.&nbsp;

The former India batter also tried his hand at coaching in the overseas T20 leagues, working as an assistant coach with SunRisers Eastern Cape in 2023, when they won the inaugural SA20 title.&nbsp;

Lately, Badani worked as a coaching consultant for Jaffna Kings in the Lankan Premier League (LPL), helping them win the latest edition.

Putting it under ‘Project Punjab’, Punter, as cricket fans call him, revealed the youngsters and the talent pool in PBKS dressing attracted him and that working with them to come on top looked like a challenge, which he willingly accepted.

“Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was 'Project Punjab'&nbsp;which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge.&nbsp;

“The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL.&nbsp;

“I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully, during that period of time we can win the IPL,” Ponting said.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Picking a captain is a priority for me’ – Ponting</h2>

Ricky was blunt and honest in his acceptance of informing the owners to interfere less, letting the coaches and the captain take charge of what would happen on the field. Though he openly talked about having accountability and autonomy within the group, Ponting feels picking the right man to lead does half of the job.

When asked about his role in picking a captain at the upcoming mega auction, Ponting said irrespective of whether the player is an Indian or overseas, he needs the right man for the right job.

“With this mega auction coming up, either we have to decide to retain someone in our current group that we think is the best person for the job, or we have to go into the auction looking for the best possible candidate, whether that's an Indian or overseas player.&nbsp;

“And make sure that him and I work together. If the captain and coach are on the same page and work together, that's when the magic happens,” he continued.&nbsp;

<h3>Ponting on IPL retention rules</h3>

The BCCI will formally announce the revised retention rules ahead of the mega auction, and Ponting feels plenty of work needs to be done to have a settled unit at the helm. Although Ponting disagrees with the ‘more retention is better for the team’ policy, he still backs the current lot of players to help PBKS realise its dream of winning the title.

“It is going to depend on the retention numbers. Say, if it's eight players, then all of a sudden that's 80 players [retained, if all ten teams retain that many].&nbsp;

“There's not going to be a lot of quality players left in the auction, so putting together a squad then would be more difficult. The more the numbers come down on retention, the easier it's going be to put a squad of players together.&nbsp;

“In this current Kings group, you think of some of the young Indian players they have: Prabhsimran [Singh], Ashutosh [Sharma], Shashank [Singh], Jitesh [Sharma], Arshdeep [Singh], Harpreet Brar, Harshal [Patel]. Then among the overseas lot, we have [Liam] Livingstone, [Sam] Curran, [Kagiso] Rabada, [Jonny] Bairstow - there's enough quality,” he noted.

Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Punjab Kings (PBKS) have reportedly appointed legendary Australia player Ricky Ponting as their new head coach. Ponting, sacked in July by Delhi Capitals after a seven-year stint, will have a huge task in hand to guide PBKS back into the IPL playoffs. PBKS finished ninth in IPL 2024 and have not reached the playoffs since 2014 when they were runners-up having lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the final.

<h2>Ponting set for PBKS role</h2>

According to a report from ESPNcricinfo, Ponting has signed a multi-year deal with PBKS and will have huge decision-making ahead of the mega-auctions that are set to take place at the end of the month. His first job will be to appoint a coaching staff which currently comprises Trevor Bayliss (head coach), Sanjay Bangar (head of cricket development), Charl Langeveldt (fast-bowling coach), and&nbsp;Sunil Joshi (spin-bowling coach).

The second job will be to prepare a strategy for the IPL auctions and retain players for the next season. The likes of Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran and Harshal Patel remain top of the retention list while Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma could also give a good headache to the Aussie.

The IPL auction strategy will also include getting a new captain for the side after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement.

<h2>New team for Ponting</h2>

Having started his IPL career with Kolkata Knight Riders, Ponting’s first piece of silverware came in 2013 when he won the title with Mumbai Indians. He would then serve in a coaching role at Mumbai before being appointed as the Delhi Capitals head coach in 2017, with him taking over during the IPL 2018 season.

During his stint as DC coach, he helped the franchise reach playoffs from 2019 to 2021. The IPL 2020 season remains the most successful in the franchise’s history having reached the IPL final but lost to Mumbai Indians.

Recalling India's famous Gabba win, Ponting pointed out the change in mindset and the fearless approach of the Indian team.

"They won a game at the Gabba, which just doesn't happen. I think their batters adapt to overseas batting conditions very well. I don't think they're as daunted by the Gabba or the Optus Oval, as they maybe once were. Maybe it is a selection thing, or they just don't fear the big stage anymore," he said.

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first, as is the trend often in big knockout matches. However, the decision proved awful in hindsight as the seaming conditions and the unpredictable nature of the pitch startled the Afghan batters.&nbsp;

“It seems strange to me that you’ll use a brand new wicket for a semifinal one that you’ve actually got no idea about how it’s going to play. We heard the preparation for this wicket started about a week and a half,” Ponting told the host broadcaster.

The legendary Australian player highlighted that seam and swing still would have been fine but the inconsistent bounce is what turned the semi-final into a drab affair.&nbsp;

Ponting was not the only ex-player to share his displeasure over the quality of the pitch. Former England batter and current Afghanistan coach, Jonathan Trott, slammed the authorities for offering such a pitch in the semi-final.&nbsp;

Warner ended his T20I career with 3,277 runs in 110 games at an average of 33 and a strike rate of 143. He scored 28 fifties and a hundred in the shortest format with 100 not out being his highest individual score.
