This year's parade was special in so many ways as the swachhagrah, frontline workers, auto-rickshaw drivers, construction workers and labourers who prepared the majestic tableaus were among the special guests invited this year to the Republic Day parade.

The number of people allowed to attend the parade was curtailed to approximately 5,000-8,000 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, with seats reserved for construction workers, frontline health workers and others.

Israel's envoy to India reveals what 'captured' his heart during India's 73rd Republic Day parade

At India's 73rd Republic Day celebration in India's capital city, all eyes were on the Vande Bharatam segment which made its debut at the parade for the first time this year.

Comprising of 485 dancers of various genres from 15 states, the dancers added grandeur and splendour to the Republic Day celebration on Wednesday as performed to Classical, Folk and Contemporary styles.

The dancers, selected through an India level competition Vande Bharatam-Nritya Utsav organised by the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Culture, danced in unison in front of the President of India, the Prime Minister and other cabinet and state ministers.

Considering the number of performers involved, the entire act was no mean feat to pull off and was choreographed by India's four renowned choreographers Rani Khanam, Maiyetree Pahari, Tejaswini Sathe, and Santosh Nair.

For the first time in history, India's flag - the tricolour - was unfurled on the clock tower in the famous Lal Chowk area in Srinagar - a city in Jammu and Kashmir. This is for the first time after India's independence that the national flag has been unfurled on top of Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower).

"Since independence, we have only seen Pakistani flags hoisted here and those were Pakistani Sponsored elements who wanted to disrupt the peace in the Valley. Since the abrogation of article 370, we can see a lot of changes on the ground. The people were asking what Naya Kashmir means? Today hoisting the National flag on top of the clock tower is what Naya Kashmir stands for. This is what the people of Jammu and Kashmir want. We don’t want any Pakistani flags, we want peace and development," said Sahil Bashir, activist after unfurling the flag.

The clock tower in Lal Chowk has always had great importance regarding the politics of Kashmir. All the big leaders of India and Jammu and Kashmir have tried in the past to hoist a national flag on top of the clock tower but never were successful.

"Since the independence of India, this was the only place which did not have the Indian National flag. I decided to do this, and we have done it. A lot of people tried it earlier, but we were the only ones successful. As an Indian, we have unfurled the flag here and it’s given us happiness," Sajid Yousuf, activist.

On this occasion, a martial art event and students from various districts were brought to witness the unfurling of the flag. Security has been put on high alert across the Kashmir Valley especially in Srinagar city. Barricades were put up everywhere and vehicles were allowed only after checking. Mobile internet was also shut down this morning.

President of India Ram Nath Kovind also addressed the nation on the eve of the R-Day celebrations nationwide. He told the countrymen in his speech, "My heartiest greetings to all of you, in India and abroad, on the eve of the 73rd Republic Day! It is an occasion to celebrate what is common to us all, our Indian-ness. It was on this day in 1950 that this sacred essence of us all assumed a formal shape. That day, India was established as the largest democratic republic and ‘we the people’ put into effect a Constitution that is an inspired document of our collective vision. The diversity and vibrancy of our democracy is appreciated world-wide. It is this spirit of unity and of being one nation which is celebrated every year as Republic Day. This year’s celebrations may be muted due to the pandemic, but the spirit is as strong as ever."

For the unversed, this year's celebrations are all the more special as it falls in the 75th year of Independence. Thus the celebrations are marked as the 'Azaadi ka Mahotsav' across the country. Moreover, the yearly R-Day celebrations will now last from January 23-30. January 23 marks the birth anniversary of one of the great Indian freedom fighters, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whereas 30th of January is observed as the Martyrs' Day.

India has dived into celebrations as the rich and diverse country is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day, a day celebrated to honour the prestigious Constitution of India which came into force in the year 1950.

India has dived into celebrations as the rich and diverse country is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day, a day celebrated to honour the prestigious Constitution of India which came into force in the year 1950. Honourable Prime Minister Narendra Modi and plenty of important personalities have, hence, been busy involved in the Republic Day parade in the national capital, New Delhi on Wednesday. On the occasion, PM Narendra Modi tweeted and wrote, "Wishing you all a happy Republic Day. Jai Hind!" आप सभी को गणतंत्र दिवस की हार्दिक शुभकामनाएं। जय हिंद! Wishing you all a happy Republic Day. Jai Hind! #RepublicDay — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) January 26, 2022 × President of India Ram Nath Kovind also addressed the nation on the eve of the R-Day celebrations nationwide. This year’s celebrations may be muted due to the pandemic, but the spirit is as strong as ever." 'Proud of his monumental contribution': India pays tributes on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose birth anniversary

The central government has dropped the hymn 'Abide with me' from the musical line-up of Republic Day.

'Abide with me', written by Scottish Anglican poet and hymnologist Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, had been part of the Beating Retreat ceremony since 1950.

Beating Retreat marks the end of nearly week-long festivities of Republic Day, which used to begin on January 24. But this year, the celebrations will begin on January 23, the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.

It was the favourite hymn of Mahatma Gandhi, who is popularly known as the 'father of the nation.'

For this year's ceremony, the hymn has been replaced by the popular patriotic song "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon", which was written by Kavi Pradeep to commemorate the supreme sacrifice made by Indian soldiers during the 1962 Indo-China war.

It comes after the eternal flame at Amar Jawan Jyoti was shifted to the National War Memorial.

India’s annual Republic Day parade is a flamboyant display of the South Asian nation’s military might and cultural diversity in the heart of the capital, New Delhi.

India’s military forces go on full display during the two-hour parade, with troops, rows of tanks, missiles and formations of horses and camels maneuvering down the wide Rajpath (King’s Way) boulevard.

During the event, bravery awards are given to military personnel, civilians and children for showing “courage in the face of adversity”. The event is presided over by the president, commander-in-chief of the armed forces.

India’s Border Security Force are regular favorites in the show, with their “Daredevil” motorcycle riders appearing in gravity-defying balancing acts and their camel contingents toting guns and musical instruments.

India won independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, but it was not until January 26, 1950, that the nation declared itself a sovereign republic state with the adoption of its constitution. On that day, Rajendra Prasad, India’s first president, unfurled the national flag, and thereafter January 26 became a national holiday, Republic Day.

The making of a republic: Negotiations that led to creation of India as a republic

India celebrates Republic Day annually on January 26 to mark the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India.

India celebrates Republic Day annually on January 26 to mark the date on which the Constitution of India came into effect in 1950, replacing the Government of India Act (1935) as the governing document of India. The Republic Day celebrations are held in the nation's capital, New Delhi before the President of India as ceremonious parades take place at the Rajpath. The vibrant parades showcase India's defence capability, cultural and social heritage in the form of tableaux. But ever wondered, how the tableaux are selected? What's the process? The Indian Defence Ministry is responsible for the Republic Day parade and the celebrations and every year around September, it invites all the States, the Union Territories, Central Government departments to participate in the parade with their tableaux. The invitees have to submit their proposals by September 27 and the shortlisting of the proposals starts in October. The proposal should highlight elements relevant to their state/UT/ department. This year's theme is to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence. The theme is: India@75 – Freedom struggle, Ideas @ 75, Achievements @ 75, Actions @ 75 and Resolve @ 75. The government forms an expert committee to select the final names. First, they scrutinise the proposals and send suggestions if necessary. It needed they also carry out modifications. After that participants come up with three-dimensional models of their proposal, although, it doesn't mean selection. The final names are only announced after several rounds of meetings. This year's tableaux This year, officials have informed that tableaux of Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be shown at the parade. The officials have also stated that tableaux of nine ministries and departments of the Central government will also be shown this year. Those nine tableaux would be Education and Skill Development, Civil Aviation, Communications and Posts, Home Affairs, Housing, Textiles, Law and Justice, Jal Shakti and Culture. Therefore, a total of 21 tableaux would be shown at this year's parade, they added. There were 56 proposals to show tableaux this year, as informed by the officials.

President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday condemned the violence on Republic Day during the farmers' tractor rally. Addressing the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget Session, the President said that the violence was unfortunate and he was saddened by the insult to National flag and the Republic Day.

"The national flag and a holy day like Republic Day were insulted in the past few days. The Constitution that provides us Freedom of Expression is the same Constitution that teaches us that law & rules have to be followed seriously," the President stated.

He also added that the govt is working to clear misgivings about the new farm laws. The President also listed a number of govt welfare programmes for the farmers.

Hailing the government for PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, President Kovind said, "Small and marginal farmers are also a priority for my government. To support such farmers in their small expenses, around Rs 1,13,000 crores have been transferred directly to their accounts."

"My Govt would like to clarify that the rights and facilities that were available before the formation of the three Farm Laws have not been cut short, in fact with these new agricultural reforms the Govt has provided new facilities & rights to farmers," he said.

The most important items on the agenda in the session are the passage of the Budget and related documents — the Economic Survey for 2021-22 on Friday, The Union Budget on Monday, and the report of the Finance Commission.
