WION Dispatch: PM Modi welcome Egyptian president El-Sisi at Rashtrapati Bhavan

Republic Day 2023: India is in high spirits as it is approaching its 74th year of being a Republic. Every year India showcases its prowess to the world at the Rajpath (now changed to Kartavya Path) but this year will be extra special as all the equipment including ammunition showcased will represent India's indigenisation power. Republic Day marks the adoption of India's constitution and the country's official transition to being a republic on 26 January 1950.

Every year, in the capital city of New Delhi, armed forces personnel march along the sprawling lawns of Kartavya Path in an elaborate display to showcase India's military might and cultural pageantry.

The parade starts from Raisina Hill near the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's House) and marches past India Gate onto the historic Red Fort. On this day, ceremonious parades take place at the Kartavya Path, which is performed as a tribute to India, its diversity and its rich cultural heritage by the states of India by building tableaus.

The Central government has put 32,000 tickets on sale online for the masses, said defence ministry officials on 19 January. They said that all official invites for the ceremonial event will be sent online for the first time, according to the news agency PTI. This year India will see many firsts at Kartavya Path in Delhi, here are a few of those many firsts:

1. The 74th Republic Day celebrations will take place on the revamped Central Vista avenue this year.

2. A military contingent of the Egyptian Army will march in India's Republic Day parade on January 26. The Egyptian military contingent will have 144 personnel participating in the parade.

3. The vintage artillery with 25-pounder guns that traditionally fires the thundering ceremonial 21-Gun Salute during the Republic Day celebrations will be replaced by 105 mm Indian field guns this year, as the government makes a further push for its Make in India initiative.

4. Another feature of this year's Republic Day is a team of "Daredevils" Motor Cycle Riders from the Corps of Signals co-led by a woman officer who will be part of the parade.

5. For the first time, women will form part of the BSF Camel Contingent.

6. Indigenously produced Prachand, a multi-role, light attack helicopter will also be part of the Indian Air Force flypast.

7. Besides the IL-38 aircraft, the formations like 'Bheem' and 'Vajrang' will be showcased over the Kartavya Path for the first time.

Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have designed their Republic Day tableaux on the Ramayana and the Mahabharata respectively while Jharkhand will showcase the famed Baidyanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and West Bengal will depict Goddess Durga in their floats.

Jammu and Kashmir has portrayed the cave shrine of Amarnath on its tableau with the theme 'Naya Jammu and Kashmir' while showcasing the resurgence in tourism in the last couple of years.

A total of 23 tableaux -- 17 from states and Union territories and six from various ministries and departments -- depicting India's vibrant cultural heritage, and economic and social progress will be part of the parade on the Kartavya Path, Defence Ministry officials said Sunday.

A preview of many tableaux, some of which are still being constructed or are being given finishing touches, was held at the Rashtriya Rangshala Camp in Delhi.

While 'Nari Shakti' is the theme for a majority of the tableaux which will roll down the revamped Kartavya Path on Republic Day, some states have chosen culture and heritage too as their theme, they said.

Uttar Pradesh's tableau depicts Lord Ram and Goddess Sita being welcomed by the people of Ayodhya on their return from exile, said a senior official of the state's information and public relations department.

Ayodhya Deepotsav is the main theme of Uttar Pradesh, a senior defence official earlier said.

"The side panels of the tableau depict Ram Ki Paidi on the banks of the Saryu river in Ayodhya and a big 'Deepotsav Dwar' has been erected. It also has a sculpture of Maha Rishi Vasishtha," the Uttar Pradesh government official said.

Haryana has chosen the Bhagavad Gita as its inspiration for the Republic Day tableau with a huge model of a chariot pulled by four horses being its main attraction.

"The tableau showcases Lord Krishna serving as a charioteer to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and offering him sermons. The front part of the tableau depicts Lord Krishna in his 'Virat Swaroop' form as he is displayed before Arjuna.

"The side panels of the trailer show scenes from the Mahabharata war," according to information shared by the defence ministry.

If themes drawn from timeless epics shine in these two tableaux, the West Bengal tableau glows with the hallowed image of Goddess Durga.

It displays Durga Puja in Kolkata and celebrates its inscription on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List. The tableau has a feel of a traditional pandal erected during the puja and also showcases a terracotta-inspired design.

The Ministry of Culture in its tableau has also depicted Goddess Durga.

Both the ministry and the West Bengal government have prided themselves after the UNESCO tag was granted to the ethos of Durga Puja in Kolkata.

Among eastern states, Jharkhand has chosen the Baidyanth Dham -- one of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva -- as its main theme.

'Kanwariyas' wearing saffron cloths with 'Bol Ba' imprinted on those has been showcased in the middle of the tableau while the symbolic structures of the ancient temple in Deoghar dominate the main tableau. Traditional Sohrai painting of Jharkhand, found in caves, has been depicted on the side panels.

Other states and Union Territories which have been selected to showcase their tableaux on the Katavya Path on January 26 include Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Ladakh, Uttarakhand, Tripura, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

The tableau of Gujarat depicts renewable energy production in the state and the cultural heritage of the region. Its front showcases a girl wearing a Kutchi dress, holding the 'sun' in one hand and a 'paper wheel' in another, representing solar and wind energy.

The village of Modhera, famous for its Sun Temple being India's first round-the-clock solar-powered village has also been showcased in the tableau. Artists wearing colourful 'garba' costumes will accompany it.

Ladakh will showcase its cultural heritage and historic sites in the Republic Day tableau.

Its rear part showcases the 7th-century Gandhara art-based rock-cut Buddha statues in Kargil. The rock-cut statues in Kargil are the only three of their kind in the world and are considered to be of the same genre as the now-demolished Bamiyan Buddha statues, according to information shared by the Defence Ministry.

Hakima Banoo, who hails from Kargil and is part of the artistes troupe which will accompany the tableau, said, "I am very happy that we will represent our home on the Rajpath (now Kartavya Path)".

As India increases its political and military ties with Cairo, New Delhi has extended an invitation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to be the chief guest at Republic Day on January 26.

The invitation to El Sisi, who has been the Egyptian president since 2014, is being seen as India's outreach to both Africa and the Arab world. Egypt, which is the Arab world's most populous country, is also 2nd largest economy in Africa. This year, both countries celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

Rolling out the red carpet for President Sisi means Delhi-Cairo ties will see special attention in the coming few months and years. Both the Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the country earlier this year. During their visits, both the ministers met the Egyptian President, with Jaishankar handing out a "personal message" of PM Modi to him.

This year's republic day will be presided over by new Indian President Draupadi Murmu.

Egypt has never been invited to India's Republic Day so far since the first Republic Day celebration started in 1950.
She is a Lieutenant Commander in Indian Naval Air Squadron (INAS) 314 and is an observer officer. Sharma, who was commissioned in June 2016, had said on January 22 that the enthusiasm and energy of the contingent is unmatched, and it is indeed an honor to lead it at the Republic Day parade.

Here's what's changed this year.

At Wednesday's Republic Day parade, the Indian Navy displayed a tableau depicting the 1946 naval uprising that contributed to the country's independence movement.

On February 18, 1946, Royal Indian Navy sailors of the 'Talwar' ship began the uprising, which spread quickly to 78 ships.

The tableau on Tuesday reflected the navy's theme of 'Combat Ready, Credible, and Cohesive'.

The naval contingent comprised 96 men, three platoon commanders and one contingent commander.

As the nation is celebrating 75 years of Independence as 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav', the navy's contribution to the Indian freedom struggle had a special mention in the tableau.

In the forward part of the tableau, the naval uprising was depicted, while in the reverse part, the 'Make in India' initiatives of the Indian Navy were depicted, especially between 1983 and 2021.

The indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant was the star of the show. It was flanked by models of the indigenous missile corvette Kora, destroyer Visakhapatnam, frigate Shivalik on left and P-75 submarine Kalvari, frigate Godavari and destroyer Delhi on the right.

There were frames depicting indigenous construction of naval platforms on the trailer's lower section.
At the parade, the 72-men band of the Indian Navy was led by Vincent Johnson, Master Chief Petty Officer Musician and Hon Sub Lieutenant.
