Having enjoyed a fruitful outing in this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), Ravindra Jadeja was expected to excel in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia. Jadeja did pull off a vital knock of 48 in the first innings of the WTC final but it was not enough to earn a win for Team India. Jadeja is currently preparing in West Indies for the Test series against the Caribbean opponents. Ahead of the first Test against West Indies, Jadeja has shared a hilarious picture on Instagram Stories. In the photo, Jadeja can be seen standing in the middle with head coach Rahul Dravid and Ravichandran Ashwin on both sides. Describing himself as a horse, Jadeja termed both Dravid and Ashwin as two goats.

Jadeja’s numbers

In red-ball cricket, Ravindra Jadeja has so far represented Team India 65 times. Jadeja currently has 2706 runs and 268 wickets under his belt in Test cricket. In his last Test appearance, Jadeja scored a combined 48 runs across two innings in the WTC final against Australia. The star all-rounder was dismissed for a duck in the second innings of the encounter.

The Ashwin conundrum

With a strong squad at their disposal, the Indian cricket team are expected to win convincingly against West Indies. The number one Test bowler on the ICC Test player ranking, Ravichandran Ashwin did not get a chance to play against Australia in the WTC Final. The move by the Indian team management was heavily criticised by former cricketers and experts. It will now be interesting to see if Ashwin gets a chance to showcase his magic in the upcoming tour of West Indies.

The two-match Test series between India and West Indies will start from Wednesday. While Cheteshwar Pujara has been not selected for the squad, Shubman Gill, in all likelihood, will claim the number three spot. Youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal may make his Team India debut while opening with skipper Rohit Sharma. The Test series will be followed by three-match ODI series and five-match T20I series.

Ravindra Jadeja shares hilarious Instagram post ahead of series against West Indies

Dubbed by many as the greatest Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fondly known as MS Dhoni, turned 42 on Friday, July 7. The beloved 'Thala' lately tasted success in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with his Chennai Super Kings team winning the title for the fifth time equaling Mumbai Indians.

His teammates, best friends and even colleagues took to social media to send birthday greetings to the legend.

From Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja to some of the young guns, Dhoni received ample love and best wishes from all quarters.

To date, the only captain to win all white-ball ICC trophies, including the T20 World Cup (2007), 50-over World Cup (2011) and the Champions Trophy (2013), Dhoni is regarded among the game's finest strategists and perhaps one of the best wicketkeepers of all time.

From being the ultimate finisher that he was, having won a plethora of games on his own for both India and his IPL franchises, CSK and Rising Pune Supergiant, Dhoni's ability to produce a stumping in a fraction of seconds gave him the name of 'the quickest man in the east'.

Other than winning three ICC titles as Indian captain, Dhoni also clinched two Asia Cup trophies (2010, 2016) and was also the first Indian captain to win the ODI series in Australia (2008).

As it often unfolds in life, he has had many low moments as a captain throughout his career, but Dhoni's ability to rise from the ashes and deliver with what is at his disposal separated him from the rest.

On his birthday, some of Dhoni's closet pals on and off the field, including Raina and Jadeja, sent him greetings on social media. Several budding youngsters like Tilak Varma, who received his maiden India call-up for the upcoming West Indies series, also tweeted wishes for the veteran skipper.

Indian cricket legends send birthday greetings to MS Dhoni as Thala turns 42

On June 23, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Team India's 16-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series versus West Indies to be held in the Caribbean island. The Test series commences on July 12 as India will kick off their campaign in the third WTC cycle after ending second in 2019-2021 and 2021-23. While Rohit Sharma retained captaincy in the red-ball format, Ajinkya Rahane was promoted as vice-captain.

Rahane was India's Test vice-captain for a long time during Virat Kohli's captaincy. He lost the post in late 2021 and his place after a series of poor performances in early 2022 before making a comeback into the Indian team ahead of the 2021-23 WTC final versus Australia. Returning with an impressive 89 and 46 in the WTC summit clash, where India lost to Australia by 209 runs at The Oval, London, Rahane regained the vice-captaincy post for the West Indies tour. It is believed that injuries to Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant also led to Rahane regaining the vice-captaincy.

Many former cricketers reacted to Rahane once again becoming the vice-captain and slammed the move. While some believe it was an ideal chance to groom Shubman Gill, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels Ravindra Jadeja was the ideal candidate.

'There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches'

"I won't say it's a step backwards. You have been out for 18 months, then you play a Test and you become a vice-captain. I don't understand the thought process behind it. There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches, he is a candidate." "....but to just come back and straightway become vice-captain after 18 months, I don't understand. My only thing is that selection shouldn't be hot and cold. There has to be continuity and consistency in selection," said Ganguly while talking to PTI.

Talking about the Test squad, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ishan Kishan, Mukesh Kumar, Navdeep Saini, Ruturaj Gaikwad have been included, whereas Cheteshwar Pujara has been dropped after a poor run in the previous WTC cycle, including low returns in the finale.

Many former cricketers reacted to Rahane once again becoming the vice-captain and slammed the move. While some believe it was an ideal chance to groom Shubman Gill, former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly feels Ravindra Jadeja was the ideal candidate. 'There is Ravindra Jadeja, who has been there for a long time and a certainty in Test matches' "I won't say it's a step backwards. 'Don't understand...': Ganguly on Rahane's promotion as Test vice-captain, suggests ideal candidate

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won their fifth IPL title during the 2023 edition. Having finished at the ninth spot in IPL 2022, the Yellow Army made a memorable comeback this time around as they equalled with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) in terms of most IPL trophies (five each). Facing the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in a rain-marred final, CSK emerged on top with a last-ball four, chasing 171 in a 15-over run-chase, to win by five wickets (DLS method).

During the entire season, Dhoni made heads turn with his big hits, sharp keeping, and captaincy. It was widely speculated that IPL 2023 would be Dhoni's last season (although he stated that he will try to return for IPL 2024 after winning this year's trophy). Thus, fans came in large numbers in every game for CSK and waited for Thala Dhoni to come out to bat. The legendary captain batted mostly at No. 8, after Ravindra Jadeja, and often the Chennai fans chanted Dhoni's name when Jadeja came out to bat and erupted on his departure. Thus, this irked Jadeja and he even took a jibe at the CSK fans after Qualifier 1.

Speaking to Cricinfo, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan opened up on CSK fans hoping to see the back of Jadeja for Dhoni to come out to bat and squashed rift rumours between the two.

'Jadeja may have felt hurt'

"As far as Jadeja is concerned, he bowled superbly. While batting, our line-up of Ruturaj, Conway, Moeen, Rahane, with the results, whenever he [Jadeja] went in to bat, he had 5-10 balls left. In such situations, it can or can't click sometimes. But the thing is he also knew Dhoni was to come in next, and he himself would get just 2-3 balls sometimes. In such situations whenever he went in, the crowd used to welcome Dhoni. In a way, he may have felt hurt. Any player for that matter may have had that pressure. But he didn't complain about it even though he put out a tweet," Viswanathan said.

Further, Viswanathan also reacted to Jadeja's cryptic tweets and claimed that the CSK franchise has no issues with him. In addition, he revealed the star Indian all-rounder's immense respect and admiration for Dhoni.

"It's all part and parcel of the game. After the last game, people saw videos online and assumed I'm pacifying Jadeja, but it wasn't like that. I was talking to him about the match, what he did. We didn't have any other discussion. Everyone knows in a team environment, what happens in the dressing room, no one is privy to it outside. We don't have any problem. He always had high respect for Dhoni. After the final also, he said, 'I dedicate this knock to Dhoni.' That is the kind of respect he has for MS," Viswanathan added.

Jadeja ended IPL 2023 with 20 scalps -- his best tally in a season -- and also chipped in with some valuable cameos with the bat. In the final, GT posted 214 for 2 before a rain interruption reduced the target to 171 in 15 overs. Devon Conway, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ambati Rayudu, Ajinkya Rahane, Jadeja (6-ball 15*) and Shivam Dube (21-ball 32 not out) chipped in to take their side home on the final delivery.

Has there been a better replacement for a first-team player (Josh Hazlewood here) in Test cricket than Scott Boland? The lanky Victorian almost sealed the deal for the Aussies on day five of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) Final against India with his stunning spell. During the first hour of play, Boland dismissed Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in the space of three balls to put India on the backfoot.

Boland, who got picked over regular seamer Hazlewood on precautionary grounds for this one-off Test, did wonders for his team by picking three wickets so far in the final innings at the Oval. After getting rid of dangerous Shubman Gill on Saturday, Boland took no time in sending the star pair of Kohli and Jadeja back to the hut.

Coming in next was star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Boland came around the wicket to him, only to wrap him up in two balls. Jadeja left the first one but couldn’t stop himself from trying to put bat to ball on the second fullish delivery, resulting in him nicking one to the keeper Alex Carey.

Boland, who already looked threatening with his tight line and lengths, made all the difference across two innings.

After making most of the lead in the second innings, Australian batters struggled to score freely but still stood ahead with each run scored. Declaring on 270 for eight, Australia gave India a daunting target of 444 – a total that has never been chased in Test history.

The Indian openers came up with an attacking approach but couldn’t continue for long as they lost Gill and Rohit inside 100 runs. Cheteshwar Pujara also departed early by playing a poor shot, with Indian team left with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to build a partnership.

WTC Final, Day 5: WATCH – Scott Boland produces stunning spell to dismiss Virat Kohli, Jadeja in one over

Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers as he took three wickets in Australia's second innings, including a sensational bowled of Cameron Green. The Aussie allrounder had a troubled stay at the crease for his 25 runs before being outfoxed by Jadeja in leaving ball which landed onto stumps.

On the last ball of the 63rd over of Australia's second innings, Green decided to leave the ball which had landed outside leg but spun and bounced sharply to hit his pad before being ricocheted on the stumps, shattering the bails. Green was the second wicket to fall on the day on a personal score of 25. Have a look at the video here:

India's second innings started with much flamboyance as Shubman Gill and skipper Rohit Sharma started in very positive fashion and added quick runs in the short session before tea. WTC Final: Ravindra Jadeja bowls Cameron Green after outfoxing him to leave ball - WATCH

Ajinkya Rahane and KS Bharat would need to shoulder some responsibility early on day three if India were to avoid the follow-on in the first innings of the ongoing WTC Final against Australia. After the Indian team got reduced to 151 for five at stumps the previous day, tensions rose in the dressing room, with the remaining batters needing to score at least a hundred more runs to help India gain a little momentum.

The India team lost early wickets in their first innings, with Shubman Gill and Chesteshwar Pujara suffering the same fate of not reading the line of the ball properly and getting out clean bowled without even offering a shot. Captain Rohit Sharma had his counterpart Pat Cummins trapping him in front, while Mitchell Starc got the big fish Virat Kohli off a stunning bouncer that was well-caught by Steve Smith at second slip.

Ravindra Jadeja and Ajinkya Rahane stitched a 71-run stand for the fifth wicket before Nathan Lyon struck gold and got rid of the dangerous-looking Jadeja on 48.

How can Rahane, Bharat save India’s sinking ship?

It’s not the right time to think about miracles happening in the first hour on day three. Though at most venues in the world, especially in the SENA countries, the third-day pitch is presumed to be best for batting, Indian batters still want to put in hard yards and not think about easy runs.

With Rahane, everyone expects more leaves than plays, while with Bharat, even the Indian fans are unsure what version of him will take the field on Friday.

For best, India can avoid losing wickets in the first 10 overs, and upon settling down a bit, they can take the attack to the opposition. With a lot riding on the back of these batters, making the most out of this chance will help India enter the contest again.

Though the potent Aussie bowling attack is likely to keep Indian batters quiet; however, if the Indian team manages to score at least 150 more runs, which would be 300 in total, their chances of putting pressure back on the Oz increases.

But, if the opposite happens and the Australian attack dismisses the Indian team anything under 70 runs more, they will have their noses in front, and they are likely to bat again in the third innings instead of giving the follow-on.

With that happening, India will be staring at another ICC tournament final loss.

WTC Final, Day 3: Preview - Rahane, Bharat must save India's sinking ship as Oz eye big lead in 2nd innings

India are set to face Australia in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final starting on June 07 (Wednesday) at the Kennington Oval, London. This will be India's second consecutive shot at winning the coveted Test mace after finishing second in the inaugural WTC cycle. Facing the second-ranked Australian team will be a huge challenge for India but Rohit Sharma & Co. have a strong squad at their disposal to compete hard with the Aussies.

In their last series, India defeated Australia in the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home (winning 2-1). However, playing the WTC summit clash at The Oval, London will pose a different challenge for both teams. Ahead of the finale, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar opened up on India's possible XI and highlighted a slot that might be a bit of a concern for No. 1 ranked Team India.

'No. 6 is where there is just a little bit of a concern'

“I will talk about the batting, and that will be Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as one-two. No. 3 is (Cheteshwar) Pujara, No. 4 is (Virat) Kohli, No. 5 is Ajinkya Rahane. No. 6 is where there is just a little bit of a concern,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar asserted, “I would imagine No. 6 would be either (Srikar) Bharat or Ishan Kishan. They are talking about Bharat because he has played all these matches so far. So will probably stick with Bharat at six,” He added, “No. 7 will be (Ravindra) Jadeja. If it’s a bright day and a bright prediction, then I think you are looking at Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin at No. 7 and No. 8. No. 9, 10 and 11 will be Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj and maybe Shardul Thakur."

If India emerge on top in the WTC final, they will break their ten-year-long ICC-title drought. Their last major title came in 2013 under legendary skipper MS Dhoni when they lifted the Champions Trophy.

India's final squad for WTC final:

Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Ishan Kishan (wk)

No. 6 is bit of a concern: Sunil Gavaskar on India's playing XI ahead of marquee WTC final vs Australia

Former England spinner Monty Panesar feels India must play Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) Final. Labelling the surface at the Oval as spinner-friendly, in comparison to other venues in the UK, Monty said going ahead with both will benefit India.

Since the Australian team has had their trouble against the turning ball, especially against spinners from India, Monty feels this move could help India sit in the driver's seat throughout the Test.

Speaking to the PTI ahead of the one-off game, which begins on June 7th in London, Monty said, "It is one pitch in England you tend to play two spinners. If the ball turns, there is bounce as well for the spinners. In my view, the wicket will be flat. In these conditions, it will suit India if they play two spinners. We have already seen Australia struggling against spinners, especially from India."

England’s one of most premier modern-day spinners, Monty Panesar, added going by the recent results at the venue in the T20 Blast, there was some spin on offer, and since ICC will want the match to go ahead till the fourth day, at least, chances of having a green pitch instead of a dry one is unlikely to happen.

"The weather has been hot, and we are seeing the ball turning even in some T20 Blast games in London. I also don't see them keeping grass because they would want the match to last at least four days," Panesar added.

Considering conditions at Oval, Umesh might play ahead of Thakur

Not only spin, history suggests the ball tends to reverse a bit at the Oval. On that note, Panesar expects Rohit to play seamer Umesh Yadav ahead of the bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur. Elaborating on this, Panesar said with Umesh offering an express speed of above 140 kmph and considering the old ball does talk, he should be the first choice other than Mohammed Siraj and Shami.

"It will also be interesting to see who the seamers will be as they have a lot of options there as well. India are the stronger side in my opinion on all fronts. As they will get extra batting options with Ashwin and Jadeja, I would go with Umesh as the third pacer," Monty said.

“He is the guy Rohit can go to and say 'I want you to bowl five overs at 140 plus and rough up the Australian batters'. You will need that extra pace.

"The ball does reverse at The Oval, and we have seen how good the Indian bowlers are when it comes to reverse swing. They can get the ball to move more than the Australian pacers,” he added.

WTC Final: 'Oval pitch will assist spinners, India must play Ravindra Jadeja, Ravi Ashwin' - Monty Panesar

Not just Indian fans, but the Australian dressing room is also unsure of what bowling line-up India will go ahead with against Oz in the WTC Final. Daniel Vettori, a Kiwi legend and the assistant coach of the Australian team, has admitted the confusion around the same is also keeping the mighty Aussies on their toes ahead of the one-off clash at The Oval in London, starting June 7th.

While Aussies expect Ravindra Jadeja to play and bat at the number six spot following a brilliant IPL season, Vettori had some words for Ravi Ashwin and seam bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur – who are in contention to make it to the XI.

Speaking to the local media ahead of Thursday’s training session at the Kent Country Cricket Ground in Beckenham, Vettori revealed talks on what XI India will play in the crunch clash are happening.

"We have been debating that," Vettori said, as quoted by the ICC. "I think Jadeja will play because of the batting he brings to the table and how successful he has been at that No.6 position.

"Then the question will be around that fourth seamer and the all-rounder in Thakur and Ashwin, but they are (both) pretty good choices," Vettori added.

Time for Ashwin-Jadeja magic at the Oval

While Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 472 scalps to his name, the veteran offie had just played one Test at the venue – in 2014, where he returned with three for 72. In England, Ashwin’s record is not that bad – as he had picked 18 wickets from seven games at a decent average of 28.11.

Since the Oval has a history of offering some assistance to the spinners later in the game, going ahead with Jadeja and Ashwin is one risk Rohit could be tempted to take.

"Ashwin is an incredible bowler, and he will be the first choice in most teams, and just with their combinations, it may lead to that (him missing selection)," Vettori said. "We expect The Oval to behave how it always behaves.

"It is a good wicket, but it can offer a lot to the spinners as the game goes on.”

Besides, going in with a combination of two spinners and three seamers, India can also opt to play four seamers and one spin-bowling all-rounder. Though Umesh Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat - who suffered respective injuries during IPL 2023 are training hard ahead of the WTC Final, their injury status remains unclear.

If deemed fit, both could also get picked, considering the conditions.

WTC Final: Confusion around India's bowling line-up is keeping Australia on its toes, admits Daniel Vettori

IPL 2023 final ended in the early hours on Tuesday (May 30) with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerging on top of defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) in a rain-marred contest. Being asked to bat first, Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat rode on Shubman Gill's 39 (20), Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54 and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96 to post 214 for 4. In reply, CSK's run-chase was halted for more than two hours due to rain and a wet outfield. After play resumed, CSK needed 171 in 15 overs.

Chennai rode on a bright start from Ruturaj Gaikwad (16-ball 26) and Devon Conway (25-ball 47) before cameos from Ajinkya Rahane (13-ball 27), Shivam Dube (21-ball 32 not out), Ambati Rayudu's 8-ball 18 and Ravindra Jadeja's 6-ball 15 propelled them to a stunning five-wicket win (DLS method) to clinch their fifth IPL title overall, most along with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI).

Recently, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar blamed Hardik Pandya for GT losing the battle as his talk, along with head coach Ashish Nehra's message from the dugout, disrupted Mohit Sharma's flow in the last over when he made the equation tougher for CSK, needing 10 from 2 balls after they required 13 off last 6 balls.

"He (Mohit) had bowled the first 3-4 delivery absolutely brilliantly. Then, for some strange reason, some water was sent to him. In the middle of the over, some drink was sent to him. Then Hardik Pandya came and spoke with him," Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

Till then, he was focused and I do not think what they did was the right idea. Because after that, he went for runs."

CSK were cruising towards the target before Mohammad Shami bowled a terrific penultimate over, conceding only eight. In need of 13 off 6 deliveries, Jadeja-Dube could not find the ropes with Mohit nailing four back-to-back yorkers. However, he missed his lengths on the final two balls after a talk with skipper Hardik and some message coming for him from Nehra in the GT dugout.

After the loss, Mohit opened up on the last-over debacle and told Indian Express, "I couldn't sleep. Sochta raha kya alag karta joh match jeet jaate ((Kept wondering what I could do differently that we would have won). What if I could have bowled this ball or that ball? It's not a nice feeling now. Somewhere something is missing but I'm trying to move on."

Rahane too found his mojo at the number three position and played a number of cameos for the side all season. Such was his form that he was included in India’s squad for the WTC final. Other members of the Indian team are currently training at the Arundel Castle Cricket Club. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj, and others have already started training ahead of the WTC final. IPL 2023: Stephen Fleming lauds Ravindra Jadeja after match-winning knock, says 'today he repaid that faith'

The IPL 2023 final got pushed to the reserve day, that is Monday evening (May 29), after persistent rain on Sunday (May 28). MS Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opted to bowl first and the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) rode on Wriddhiman Saha's 39-ball 54 and Sai Sudharsan's 47-ball 96 to post a mammoth 214/4 in 20 overs. CSK's chase started with a lengthy rain break which led to a revised target, 171 off 15 overs. The Yellow Army rode on quickfire knocks from Ruturaj Gaikwad, Devon Conway, Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja's last-over heroics to win their fifth IPL title.

With 13 needed off the last six deliveries, GT's Mohit Sharma -- their best bowler who ended with 3 for 36 -- made the equation tougher for Chennai. On the last two deliveries, CSK needed ten for a win when Jadeja showed his worth, hitting a six and a four to help his side lift a memorable fifth IPL title -- joint-most along with Mumbai Indians (MI). After CSK's emphatic five-wicket win, Jadeja said he 'wants to dedicate this victory to MS Dhoni'.

'Want to dedicate this win to one of the special members of our team - MS Dhoni'

At the post-match presentation, Jadeja said, "Feeling amazing winning fifth title in front of my home crowd. They've come in big numbers to support CSK. This crowd has been amazing. They were waiting for the rain to stop till late at night. Want to say big congratulations to CSK fans. Want to dedicate this win to one of the special members of our team - MS Dhoni."

Want to dedicate this win to a special member of the team: Jadeja after CSK's 5th IPL title

After three days of unbelievable drama, Chennai Super Kings emerged on the top as they beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets to lift their fifth IPL title – joint-most with Mumbai Indians. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad erupted in joy after CSK all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja smashed ten off the last two balls to help his team cross the line.

The match that was supposed to start and finish on May 28th began a day later, on May 29th, while the result came the next day - May 30th.
Batting first in this rain-hit contest, Gujarat got off to a flying start, with both openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha stitching another fifty-plus stand for the first wicket. After Dhoni affected an incredible stumping to dismiss Gill, left-hander batter Sai Sudharsan came to the crease and decided to make this evening his own.

Alongside Saha, who became the oldest player to score a fifty in an IPL final, Sai slammed every CSK bowler to all parts of the ground, and courtesy of his record-breaking 96 off 47 balls, which included eight fours and six sixes, Gujarat put up a mammoth 214 for four in 20 overs.

CSK’s innings began with a four before rain halted the play for nearly three hours. After several rain interruptions and inspections that followed, play resumed past mid night, with CSK needing 171 to win from 15 overs.

Following a brilliant start, CSK's both openers got out to Noor Ahmad, after which Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu – the man who was playing his last IPL game, brought Chennai closer to the chase with quickfire cameos. Shivam Dube also contributed with handy sixes, but what was disappointing was MS Dhoni getting out on a first-ball duck off Mohit Sharma.

Ravindra Jadeja then kept his cool and scored ten off last two balls to help CSK beat GT by five wickets and lift the IPL 2023 trophy.

ALSO READ: IPL 2023 Final: MS Dhoni's CSK beat defenders GT on last ball of rain-marred contest to win fifth title Alongside Saha, who became the oldest player to score a fifty in an IPL final, Sai slammed every CSK bowler to all parts of the ground, and courtesy of his record-breaking 96 off 47 balls, which included eight fours and six sixes, Gujarat put up a mammoth 214 for four in 20 overs. 𝗗𝗢 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗠𝗜𝗦𝗦! Two shots of excellence and composure! IPL 2023: Twitter erupts in joy as Chennai Super Kings win 5th IPL title

With each passing day, the excitement around the World Test Championship Final between India and Australia is rising. While fans, commentators, and everyone else have their predicted XIs ready for the one-off Test, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has also shared his take on an important selection call for India – who should they go ahead with, Ravi Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja?

Given the match is taking place at the Oval in London, the venue that traditionally supports batters and assists spinners at some point later in the game, India might opt to go ahead with both spin-bowling all-rounders. With two seamers, Jaydev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav yet to attain full fitness, India might contemplate playing Shardul Thakur as the third seamer.

ALSO READ: 'X-factor' Ishan Kishan can put Australia under pressure in WTC Final, says Ricky Ponting

As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Ponting said Jadeja - the batter, has improved a lot over the years and can take up the number six spot, while Ashwin, as labelled by him as the more skilled bowler, will start in the XI too.

"I think they will pick Jadeja and Ashwin because Jadeja can hold that No. 6 batting spot," Ponting said while picking whom the two shall be named in the XI.

"His batting has improved that much that they can pick him as a batter now that might just bowl a few overs if required. There is no doubt that Ashwin is a more skilled and better Test bowler than Jadeja is, but if Jadeja can hold down that batting spot and then as the game goes on, getting into the fourth and fifth day if it does start to turn, then you have got that really high-class second spin bowling option if required,” Punter added.

Rahane better suited to Test format – Ponting

Following a stellar start to IPL 2023 for Chennai Super Kings, Test veteran Ajinkya Rahane got recalled to the side for the WTC Final. Shedding some thoughts on his return after nearly two years, Ponting said this format suits Rahane's style more, and since he is coming with some confidence on his back, the right-hand batter will play a crucial role in helping India end the ICC trophy drought.

"Jinks (Rahane) has had an incredible IPL as well. It's funny, isn't it, how IPL runs can now get you picked back into a Test match squad. Jinks has been on the outer for the last couple of years in Test cricket, but everyone saw how confident he looked and how well he played in the IPL, and that was enough to get him back in,” Ponting further said.

Ricky added saying, "He has been there and done it before in Test cricket. It was probably a bigger hurdle for him to climb to get back into playing really good T20 cricket than it is for him to go back and play good Test cricket. His make-up is much more suited to the Test game than it is to T20 cricket. He has rediscovered some confidence, and if he does get picked, I won't be surprised to see him get runs in that Test match.

"He has always been a really high-quality player, and we saw him even with his leadership qualities here in Australia, in that last series to turn things around," the former Aussie captain said.

WTC Final: Should India play both Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja? Ex-Aussie captain shares his take

MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Gujarat Titans (GT) by 15 runs in Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2023 edition on Tuesday (May 23). After finishing the league stage at the second spot, four-time winners CSK faced defending champions GT in defence of 172-7 as they dismissed Hardik Pandya & Co. for 157 runs in 20 overs. Interestingly, the last wicket also fell on the last ball of the contest with Mohammed Shami being dismissed by Matheesha Pathirana with Deepak Chahar taking a brilliant catch.

IPL 2023: MS Dhoni's CSK achieve unique feat after beating defending champions GT in Qualifier 1

There is no match to MS Dhoni’s craze, be it in Chennai or any other part of the country. More so that fans present inside the stadium wait for the batter who had come ahead of MS to get out so that they can watch one glimpse of the legend himself. Ravindra Jadeja - India and CSK star all-rounder often hears chants of MS Dhoni while batting and has even heard fans asking him to get out early.

After the win against Delhi Capitals in Chepauk on Wednesday, Jadeja, while attending the post-match presser, revealed the same, saying,

“Whenever any player comes to bat ahead of MS Dhoni, fans pray for the player’s dismissal so that Dhoni can come to bat in the field,” the left-arm all-rounder added.

Speaking on often hearing the same chants this season irrespective of the venue, Jadeja said,

“I keep hearing Mahi bhai’s chants. If I bat higher, then the crowd will wait for me to get out. As long as the team wins, I am happy,” he added.

Jadeja has been CSK’s best performer, and his numbers speak for him. While he hasn’t been among runs this season, his fielding and bowling exploits have made the right noise in IPL 2023.
On a day when none of the batters could cross the 25-run-mark, Jadeja’s handy cameo counts for a lot. Even CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming praised the side’s approach, which made the total of 166 as 175 or 180.

IPL 2023: Liam Livingstone, Jitesh Sharma star in high-drama win for Punjab as they beat Chennai by 4 wickets

MS Dhoni is currently involved in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. He is leading the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who picked their third win of the season -- after five games -- as they emerged on top of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in match 24, in Bengaluru, on Monday evening (April 17). It is believed that this is the last IPL season for Dhoni although the 41-year-old has not given any clarity on his future.

Dhoni remains a huge name in world cricket. He retired from international cricket on August 15, 2020, putting an end to his illustrious career with 17,266 runs, 634 catches, 359 sixes, 195 stumpings and having led India to all three major ICC titles. He led India to the 2007 T20 World Cup title but the Men in Blue faced an early exit in the following edition, in England, in 2009. After India's three-run loss to hosts England in their second game of the Super Eight round, at Lord's London, the then skipper Dhoni apologised to the Indian fans for their dismal show.

"We are more disappointed (than you) and we respect the emotions of our fans and the country. We are sorry for whatever happened. But the next Twenty20 world cup is coming again in nine months and we would have an opportunity of proving ourselves," said a dejected Dhoni after India's disappointing loss while addressing the press.

IPL 2023: CSK stars Jadeja and Rahane REVEAL secrets behind impactful performance vs MI - WATCH

Mumbai’s Ajinkya Rahane did it for his new IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, as his fastest fifty of this season in 19 balls helped the touring CSK chase down 158 with seven wickets in hand. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja starred with the ball in hand, picking up three wickets as CSK made it two wins out of three matches played so far.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Chennai was without the English duo of Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes as Rahane and Sisanda Magala replaced them in the XI.

Mumbai got off to a flyer with openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan unleashing the attack on the opposition. Despite hitting a few cracking shots, both looked vulnerable against the moving ball, with Tushar Deshpande removing Rohit clean bowled on 21 inside the Powerplay. Ishan then took the onus and slammed a few fours before gifting his wicket to Ravindra Jadeja.

Suryakumar Yadav followed him soon on one before Jadeja grabbed a headline-making catch off his bowling to dismiss Cameron Green on 12. Two more wickets fell in no time as Chennai was all over Mumbai mid-way into their innings.

Tim David scored a few boundaries to help his side post a fighting total of 157 for eight in 20 overs.

Chennai’s innings didn’t begin well as Jason Behrendorff removed Devon Conway on zero in the first over. Come in Ajinkya Rahane, who made the evening all about himself. Known to be the sweetest timer of the cricketing ball, Rahane struck with his basics and delivered for his newest IPL franchise in some style.

In 19 balls, he completed his fifty, which was also the fastest fifty by any batter in this season so far. Upon breaking shackles, he got out on a well-made 61 off 27 balls, putting CSK in a commanding position. From that point onwards, Mumbai was playing the chasing game as CSK batters deployed a cautious approach and marched towards their target.

While Shivam Dube and Ambati Rayudu contributed with handy 20 odds, it was Ruturaj Gaikwad, who remained unbeaten on 40 off 36 balls.

With 11 balls to spare and seven wickets in hand, CSK crossed the line and won their first match at this venue since 2018. While Chennai won two out of the three matches so far, Mumbai is yet to bag two points in IPL 2023.

Ravindra Jadeja could do no wrong. Perhaps cricket’s most athletic fielder at the moment, Jadeja pulled off a stunning caught & bowled dismissal to get rid of Mumbai Indians’ Cameron Green on 12. During game 2 of the double header on Saturday at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Jadeja grabbed the catch of the match off his own bowling, much to everyone’s surprise, including the umpire.

On the second ball of the ninth over, Green smashed one straight to Jadeja, only for him to grab it comfortably. The ball was hit so hard and quick, that even the umpire Chris Gaffaney reacted swifty and went down in fraction of seconds to avoid getting hit. Thanks to his luck, Jadeja, who was standing right in front of him, caught it.

BCCI central contracts: Ravindra Jadeja gets a PROMOTION, KL Rahul DEMOTED - Check full list

With less than a week to go for the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni get ready for the carnival of cricket as they try to achieve glory for the record-equaling fifth time. While all looks good in the CSK camp, it wasn’t the case 11 months ago when Jadeja had to relinquish his captaincy while there were rumours of his reported outrage. Now according to the latest report, here is how he was reintegrated into the team and how everything is all good in the camp ahead of IPL 2023.

According to the latest report by Cricbuzz, Jadeja who had reportedly walked away from the team hotel had a chat with MS Dhoni and CEO Kasi Viswanathan also spoke to him in the aftermath of the events. Jadeja was reportedly unhappy with his team’s stance while his own performance and captaincy record was not going well.

Jadeja had a long, frank chat with captain MS Dhoni, the most important man in the franchise in Mumbai last year after he opted out of the IPL with an injury. He also had a one-on-one with Viswanathan before the 'air of misunderstanding' was cleared. Viswanathan refused to divulge details of his conversation but he did confirm that all parties had free, frank and long conversations.

"Jaddu is fine, he is happy to be back with the team and is very keen to do well. He is looking forward to the season," a CSK official told Cricbuzz on Saturday (March 25).

In the 10 games he played last season, he scored 116 runs at an average of 19 and claimed five wickets at an economy rate of 7.52, numbers that don't flatter one of the best all-rounders in the game currently.

Although the conversations were never made public, Jadeja was unhappy and was on the verge of getting traded from the team. There were reports that he could be released from the franchise in November’s trading window, however, the timely intervention of Dhoni and CEO Viswanathan saw Jadeja remain in CSK colours.

CSK will start their IPL 2023 campaign against defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) on Friday, March 31. The clash will take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad as CSK try to start on a high.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. IPL 2023: Reason revealed behind Ravindra Jadeja's backlash with CSK and how he was reintegrated into side

The forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition is set to commence on March 31 at the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The opening game will see the defending champions Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) take on MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Just like every other season, the upcoming IPL edition is also keenly awaited. It will be the 16th edition of the tournament, which kicked off in 2008. Several records have been broken in the tournament since it's inception. Many captains have led the existing and now-defunct teams whereas only a handful of them have tasted success by winning the IPL championship.

Apart from only one top franchise, every other team -- including only those who have been a part of the tournament since 2008 or more than five seasons -- have had an overseas captain for a brief or significant period. However, CSK is the only team to not have had a foreign captain in their rich history.

Dhoni has been CSK's captain since the franchise first entered the IPL, with Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja taking over the role for a limited period.

Under Dhoni, CSK have won the IPL on as many as four occasions and ended second on five instances; playing the finale nine times. They have played the final in the 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021.

Chennai ended at the ninth spot in the ten-team IPL 2022. They will aim to revamp in style this time around in what could be Dhoni's last IPL season.

The end of the fifth day at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad put curtains down on the marquee 2023 Border-Gavaskar series with India winning it (2-1) for the fourth straight time. Continuing their dominance at home the Indian spinners fared the best not only with the ball but also with the bat in hand. In this piece we will look at the top five players from the recently-concluded India vs Australia series.

Ravindra Jadeja

It’s not easy being Ravindran Jadeja. From remaining out of cricket for more than five months to winning the Player of the Series award for an all-round show upon returning to the side straightaway, only Jadeja could have done it.

The left-arm maestro picked 22 wickets and scored 135 runs across four Tests to remain on top of the all-rounder's chart in the ICC rankings.

In his first game since August 2022, Jadeja returned with a five-for in the first innings in Nagpur. He mounted pressure on Australia with a fighting 70 in the first innings before picking up two more wickets in the second innings to help India win the Test by an inning and 132 runs.

His best performance, however, came in the following Test in Delhi where he picked his career-best figures of seven for 42 in the second innings, finishing with match figures of ten for 110, bagging yet another player of the match award.

Axar Patel

If there was an award for the game-changing inning in a Test, Axar would have won it not once, not twice but thrice, and that too for his batting and not bowling. India’s best player in this Border-Gavaskar series, Axar Patel impressed everyone with his batting display.

Rather known and ranked as a specialised spinner, what Axar achieved with the bat in hand even promoted the Aussies to take a leaf out of his book.

In Nagpur Axar scored a counter-attacking 84, whereas, in Delhi the left-handed batter completed yet another fifty, hitting 74 in the first innings. After a rare failure in the Indore Test, Axar returned with a 113-ball 79 in India’s first innings in the final Test. What’s exciting about these fifties – Axar scored the majority of these runs while India was struggling to put up runs on the board.

Meanwhile, given these scores, Axar was not only India’s second-best batter in the series in terms of runs scored but was also the third-highest run-scorer (264 runs at an average of 88) after Usman Khawaja and Virat Kohli. He didn’t fare any well in bowling though picking up just three wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin

There cannot be a discussion of the best players in a series in India without mentioning Ravi Ashwin’s name. The veteran spinner, for the nth time in his Test career, had an impactful series with the ball in hand.

The off-spin legend was again the thorn in the flesh of the Aussies as he won the Player of the Series award alongside Jadeja for picking up the most wickets (25) this time.

Throughout the series, Ashwin remained on the top of Australia and while he troubled them big time on the rank-turners in the first three Tests, he left an impression with a six-wicket haul in the final Test in Ahmedabad where the pitch refused to assist the spinners.

Nathan Lyon

Called the best overseas spinner to have travelled to India in a very long time by the India captain Rohit Sharma, Nathan Lyon delivered what was expected out of him.

Equalled with Jadeja in the wickets tally (22) in this series, Lyon, following a rusty start in the first match, tore into India’s middle-order in the Indore Test with his second eight-wicket haul in an inning in India.

Despite being India's nemesis, even in Australia, Lyon got good support from the newcomers in Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann throughout the series as they returned with 14 and nine wickets, respectively. Meanwhile, with 116 wickets In the Border-Gavaskar series and 482 in Tests, Lyon stays ahead of India’s Ashwin on both lists.

Usman Khawaja

After warming benches during his previous two India tours, the left-handed Usman Khawaja finally got his turn this time, and he made the most of his chance. In a team full of batting superstars, Usman came good after early jitters in the first Test and remained on top by scoring the most runs among all batters.

While Ashwin had his number on most of the occasions, Khawaja shined on two separate instances – one during the first innings in Delhi, where he scored a fighting 81 and then during the final Test in Ahmedabad, where he registered his maiden hundred on the Indian soil, hitting an incredible 180.
