Regarded as the best outfielder of modern-day cricket, India’s Ravindra Jadeja has said he does not take anything for granted, especially his fielding.

Although not for any catch or a direct throw, Jadeja made headlines for picking his maiden World Cup five-wicket haul against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, helping India win the high-octane clash by 243 runs.

"Fielding I never take for granted. I still feel I can drop a catch. I am always prepared on the field. I never relax. And that's all: I keep trying to do my best," Jadeja said after his match-winning performance against South Africa in World Cup 2023.

"Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I don't, but I keep trying all the time."

The star all-rounder had an outing to remember, smashing an unbeaten 29 off 15 balls while batting and returning with figures of five for 33 in nine overs.&nbsp;

Justifying his role as an all-round player in the side, Jadeja said he would have had a player like him in every line-up, adding he thinks as a skipper throughout the match.

"I would be very happy [to have myself]," Jadeja said.

"And you asked me to think like a captain? I have been thinking like the captain from the first match, it's a different matter that I haven't become one.

"As an all-rounder, my role is to make an impact in tough situations. When you need the crucial 30-40 runs or when there is a partnership going on, and you need a wicket. Change the game. I always try to give an impactful performance and be there whenever the team needs me,” he added.

<h2>Jadeja aware of alternate result in crucial ties</h2>

India is on a winning spree, standing tall in eight straight matches in this World Cup edition.

But Jadeja is aware of the home side suffering alternate outcomes in the knockout matches, given how quickly the situation can change in this game.&nbsp;

Commenting on how he managed to pick wickets despite the pitch playing better under the lights as compared to how it behaved in the first innings, Jadeja said, "It was almost like challenging ourselves."

"There could have been dew later in the night. If we get caught in such a situation in a knockout match, we should know how to handle it."

<h2>Spinners run riot on Kohli-Day</h2>

Tasked to chase 327, the Proteas were never in the contest and were bowled out for 83&nbsp;runs with India on top throughout the game. Jadeja was the star bowler having bagged five wickets after Virat had hogged the spotlight with his 49th ODI hundred which saw him go level with Sachin Tendulkar. South Africa’s batting line-up had no answers to India’s dominance. Only four batters got in double figures for South Africa and Marco Jansen top-scored with 14 on a dull day.

Alongside Jadeja, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav also ended with two wickets while Mohammed Siraj got the remaining wicket.

<h2>Kohli excels with special knock&nbsp;</h2>

Earlier, Kohli marked his 35th birthday with a special knock as he equaled Tendulkar’s record for most ODI hundreds at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Having missed out on the ton against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the former India captain chose his birthday to score his 49th ODI ton which is also his 79th at the international level. The day also saw him become the third-highest scorer in the ODI World Cup history.

India skipper Rohit Sharma (40) and Shubman Gill (23) started on a positive note as they stitched a 62-run stand for the opening wicket. After both openers departed, Virat and Shreyas Iyer took the initiative in their hands to set a perfect platform for a big score. The latter again missed out on a hundred and was dismissed for 77,&nbsp;scalped by Lungi Ngidi.

Later KL Rahul (8) and Suryakumar Yadav (22) joined Virat to help him get the ton. Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 29 as India reached the big total of 326/5 in their 50 overs.

ODI World Cup: Kohli's record ton, Jadeja's five-wicket haul help India crush South Africa, seal top spot

Team India is on a roll in the ODI World Cup 2023 edition at home. They remain the only unbeaten team after winning their first five games. Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. will next lock horns with England at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Ahead of the much-awaited encounter on Sunday (Oct 29), former Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh feels the home side can play three spinners in the playing XI for the Lucknow tie.&nbsp;

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, "England do not play spin well. As it is, England are not playing well in the World Cup, and if the ball starts spinning, I don’t think they will be able to do much better. Playing three spinners might not be a bad option." He further suggested that Mohammed Siraj -- who has six wickets in five games in World Cup 2023 -- can be rested.&nbsp;

Bhajji opined, "Siraj can be rested. He has played back-to-back games. Shami has just come into the playing XI and has claimed a five-fer. If a pitch is a normal one and is not expected to offer a lot of turn, then I do not see too many changes in the team."

Harbhajan stated that big players are those who shine in high-pressure games and lauded the efforts of Virat Kohli, Rohit, Mohammed Shami, etc. in the ongoing ten-team tournament. "From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma, everyone has looked good. In the bowling, Shami came in and claimed five wickets. Big players are those that perform in big tournaments,” he added.

It is to be noted that India are looking to clinch their third ODI World Cup title and first-ever ICC trophy since 2013. After five games, they have ticked most of the boxes and will be confident taking on defending champions England, who have just one win from four games.&nbsp;

As per reports, Hardik Pandya is set to miss the England game. It is likely that he might not return to the group-stage matches after sustaining&nbsp;an ankle injury during the Bangladesh game on Oct 19 in Pune.

CWC '23: 'Playing 3 spinners not a bad option' - Harbhajan Singh on India's playing XI for England tie

Former Indian men's cricket team coach believes Steve Smith is all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's bunny after the left-arm orthodox spinner outfoxed the Australian batter during the World Cup match in Chennai on Sunday (October 8).&nbsp;

Opting to bat first, Australia had a wretched start to the proceedings as opener Mitchell Marsh departed for nought.&nbsp;Afterwards, David Warner and Smith stitched a partnership and handled things sensibly. However,&nbsp;Jadeja bowled a beauty to get Smith and the wheels came off for Australia after that.&nbsp;

“Dream dismissal and he has dismissed him 10 to 12 times. He (Smith) is his bunny. It is not that easy to play such a delivery because of the speed at which he bowls. As a batter, you don't know which ball is going to turn and which ball will go straight,” Shastri told host broadcaster Star Sports.

The former Indian cricketer added that even Jadeja himself didn't know which ball would turn or not. The Chennai pitch assisted the spinners plenty and the left-armer made full use of it.&nbsp;

“He (Jadeja) himself said in the interview that he doesn't know which ball will turn and which will go straight. If he doesn't know, how will the batter know? So he plays inside the line at times and outside the line on other occasions,” added Shastri.

“If he plays outside, he becomes leg-before and if he plays inside, it hits the stumps, just like it happened with Smith. It's not easy as he will trouble anyone. If he gets a surface like this, he becomes the most difficult bowler because his every ball does not turn,” said Shastri.

From 110/2, the five-time World champions slipped to 199 all out, primarily due to Jadeja's excellent spell in the middle overs. He accounted for three Australian scalps and could've had more if the fielders had accepted the offerings made by the batters.&nbsp;

'Their unwavering faith in us...': Ravindra Jadeja lauds Indian fans, hopeful to win CWC 2023 at home

Ace Indian spinner Ravindra Jadeja had a commendable outing against Australia in his side’s World Cup opener in Chennai, picking up three for 28 in ten overs, including two maidens. Although spinners accounted for six out of ten Aussie wickets, Jadeja’s twin strike in the 30th over put Australia on the mat on a dry Chepauk pitch. Jadeja, however, picked Steve Smith’s wicket, a moment that proved to be&nbsp;the turning point of the match.

Just when Smith and Marnus Labuschagne looked like taking the game away from India with their playing template, Jadeja bowled a Jaffa, which turned right after hitting the tight spot, cleaning Smith’s off-stump. Smith played the wrong line as he expected the ball to come in with the arm, but with little assistance from the pitch, Jadeja got the breakthrough and India the big wicket of Smith on 46.

"I think that was the turning moment, you know when you get a wicket like Steve Smith. From there onwards it was not easy to just come in and rotate the strike for the new batter," said Jadeja. "So, I would say that wicket was the turning point,” Jadeja told media persons after the game.

"When I started the first over, the ball was stopping after falling a little slow. I thought it was the afternoon, it was hot, and the wicket was dry. I thought a stump-line would be better. Jadeja, however, picked Steve Smith’s wicket, a moment that proved to be the turning point of the match. World Cup: That wicket was turning point of the match: Ravindra Jadeja opens up on star show against Australia

India’s Ravindra Jadeja has hit the ground running in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 after he dismissed former Australia skipper Steve Smith in a stunning fashion on Sunday (Oct 8). Jadeja, one of the star performers over the years for the Indian team, did not take time to make his presence felt at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where India and Australia opened their World Cup campaigns. Smith’s dismissal came at the wrong time for the Aussies as he and Marnus Labuschagne were building a good partnership.

<h2>Smith sent packing home</h2>

On the first ball of the 28th over, Jadeja stunned Smith with an outside the leg stump ball that surprised him before his stumps were castled. Smith was left stranded after his dismissal as he did not judge the flight of the ball. For Jadeja’s credit, he played the mind games to get the former skipper out on 46. The wicket also started Australia’s downfall as they would later lose Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0).

Smith’s dismissal paved the way for India to dominate the contest having already dismissed Mitchell Marsh (0). The important contest saw the Men in Blue play with three spinners that included Kuldeep Yadav, Jadeja, and home-favourite Ravichandran Ashwin. Both Jadeja and Yadav scalped wickets while Ashwin was yet to get a wicket at the time of writing.

On the horizon, Australia opted to leave injured Travis Head out as expected while Marcus Stoinis was also missing from the Playing XI, with him carrying an injury. Earlier in the day, Australia skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to bat first in the challenging conditions of Chennai. On the Indian side, Shubman Gill missed out due to dengue with Ishan Kishan likely to open with skipper Rohit Sharma.

The ODI World Cup contest is the fourth time India and Australia are squaring off in less than a month. India beat the five-time World Cup winners 2-1 in the three-match ODI series recently and have momentum on their side.

<h2>Spinners dominate day</h2>

Playing three spinners, it was Jasprit Bumrah who started India’s trade of wickets when he got the better of Mitchell Marsh for a duck on the second ball of the third over. David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) would then stitch a 69-run stand for the second wicket before Kuldeep sent the former back to the pavilion. Smith and Labuschagne (27) then tried to bring the Aussies back on track before Ravindra Jadeja&nbsp;showed his class.

The Aussies quickly went from 110/2 to 119/5, losing wickets in succession to put India in the box seat in Chennai. Local favourite Ravi Ashwin would then join the party when he got the better of Cameron Green (8), while Glenn Maxwell (15) was dismissed in the previous over.

With Australia 140/7, the tail-enders showed good resilience to steer their side to 199 with India now needing to push with their batting line-up. For India, Jadeja ended with three wickets while Bumrah and Kuldeep scalped two each. There were wickets each for Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Siraj.

India are likely to open with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan in Shubman Gill’s absence while KL Rahul could be deployed in the middle order with Shreyas Iyer. India have opted not to use Suryakumar Yadav in the contest while Shardul Thakur was also dropped in favour of Ashwin.

ODI World Cup 2023: Aussies fall flat on Chennai track as Indian spinners dominate

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja rattled Australia with two wickets in an over during the ODI World Cup 2023 match in Chennai on October 8. Jadeja dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the 30th over of the Australian innings, shortly after sending back Steve Smith.

Australia were 119/3 in 29.1 overs when Labuschagne tried to sweep Jadeja but instead got an edge and wicketkeeper KL Rahul made no mistake&nbsp;behind the stumps. Carey then came to bat and lasted two balls as Jadeja trapped him Leg Before Wicket (LBW). Have a look at the wickets here:

Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in their World Cup opener. India pacer Jasprit Bumrah, however, dismissed Aussie opener Mitchell Marsh for a duck to dent Australian innings early on. Kuldeep Yadav then dismissed Warner (41) to bring India back in the game. Indian spinners then put on a choke on Australia's run rate, giving away just 31 runs from over 16 to 25. Jadeja then bowled a peach of delivery to clean bowled Steve Smith (46).

Australia's innings was left unhinged after the twin-wicket 30th over as they lost two more wickets, Cameroon Green and Glenn Maxwell, between over 31 to 40 for just 37 runs.

For India, opener Shubman Gill was not selected due to his ongoing sickness while Ravi Ashwin made a comeback to ODI side after nearly two years. Talking about Australia, all-rounder Marcus Stoinis missed out due to injury as their coach Andrew McDonald had predicted a couple days ago. Here's the playing XI for both the teams:

India - Rohit Sharma (captain), Ishan Kishan, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah

Jadeja dismissed Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey in the 30th over of the Australian innings, shortly after sending back Steve Smith. Australia were 119/3 in 29.1 overs when Labuschagne tried to sweep Jadeja but instead got an edge and wicketkeeper KL Rahul made no mistake behind the stumps. Carey then came to bat and lasted two balls as Jadeja trapped him Leg Before Wicket (LBW). ODI World Cup 2023: Watch India spinner Ravindra Jadeja's double-wicket over leaves Australia in dirt

The Cricket World Cup promises edge-of-the-seat entertainment. The sport's best players have an opportunity to achieve sporting immortality reserved only for a select few. 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore is WION's Cricket pundit and he has drawn up a list of five players who he believes will be Gamechangers over the course of the World Cup.

ICC World Cup 2023: Ravindra Jadeja to look out for at ODI WC

India will start their campaign in the CWC 2023 edition on October 8 (Sunday) when they face Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. While India ticked most of the boxes in the Asia Cup and home ODIs versus Australia, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. would be concerned with Ravindra Jadeja's batting struggles. Jadeja has not made a solid impression in the limited opportunities in recent times&nbsp;while batting down the order. He has not scored a half-century in the ODI format since 2020. However, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar isn't concerned with Jadeja's low returns and mentions a key aspect of Jadeja.&nbsp;

In response to a question from Hindustan Times, Gavaskar stated, "Not really. With the kind of experience that he has, it's not a worry. The important thing is that he is such a fast runner between the wickets. Often, we overlook it… the fact that from the non-striker end, he helps the batter convert ones into twos. So, I think those are the little things that are important. So yeah, I am not worried after Ravindra Jadeja at all. He is a top player, a wonderful player… rockstar, like Shane Warne once said."

Batting mostly at No. 7 or 8, Jadeja has played some vital knocks down the order but has not made a significant contribution. In the third and final ODI between India and Australia, in Rajkot on September 27, the 34-year-old all-rounder had a chance to get some runs under his belt and regain confidence, given India were out of the contest reeling at 249 for 6 in pursuit of a mammoth 353. However, the left-hander was seen struggling to get momentum and returned for a 36-ball 35.

The star all-rounder will be vital for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup at home. Not only with the ball, Jadeja will be needed with the bat as well -- down the order -- as Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management has often preferred batting depth.&nbsp;

The CWC 2023 edition kicks off on October 5 (Thursday) with defending champions England taking on New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

CWC 2023: Sunil Gavaskar reacts to Ravindra Jadeja's batting woes, points out 'little things' in his support

The Indian Team continued to dominate at home as they crushed Australia by 99 runs in a rain-hit match to win the second ODI in Indore on Sunday. With this win, they clinched the three-match ODI series 2-0. Twin tons from Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer and a stunning comeback by all-rounders in the second innings propelled India to a massive victory.

Asked to bat first, the Indian batters took on the challenge and went berserk on the flat Indore surface. After losing Ruturaj Gaikwad early, returning Shreyas Iyer and the man in form, Shubman Gill stitched a 200-run-stand for the second wicket.

While Iyer notched up his third ODI hundred – his first since returning to the Indian Team following an extended injury layoff, Gill completed his fifth ODI century this year, fourth in India in 2023 – a record in itself.&nbsp;

KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan also contributed with handy knocks, with Rahul completing his fifty, but it was Suryakumar Yadav, who hogged all the limelight till the end. His four sixes off four balls to Cameron Green brought the crowd to its feet, as he also scored his back-to-back fifty in this series.

Scoring 72 off 37 balls, including hitting six sixes and as many fours, SKY propelled India to register its highest ODI total (399 for 5) against Australia in this format.

In reply, Australia got off to a worst-possible start, losing opener Matthew Short and their best batter, Steve Smith, off successive balls in the second over. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne tried saving the sinking ship, but both lost the plot when play resumed following a halt due to rain.

Ravi Ashwin, brought back to the side at the last minute, dismissed three batters in two overs to put Australia on the mat. His partner-in-crime, Ravindra Jadeja, also contributed with a couple of wickets before it all fell on the tail.&nbsp;

Sean Abbott, a force to reckon with the bat in hand, scored a stunning fifty of just 29 balls to keep Australia in the game. Shami, who picked five wickets in the previous tie, removed Josh Hazlewood and broke the stand.

Jadeja completed the formalities as India won the clash by 99 runs (DLS Method).&nbsp;

His partner-in-crime, Ravindra Jadeja, also contributed with a couple of wickets before it all fell on the tail. Sean Abbott, a force to reckon with the bat in hand, scored a stunning fifty of just 29 balls to keep Australia in the game. Shami, who picked five wickets in the previous tie, removed Josh Hazlewood and broke the stand. Jadeja completed the formalities as India won the clash by 99 runs (DLS Method). India crush Australia by 99 runs in record-setting Indore tie, win ODI series

Former India opener Aakash Chopra has highlighted a key area in Ravindra Jadeja’s batting as the team gets into the final stage of preparations for the ODI World Cup next month. Jadeja, one of the first names in the Playing XI for the World Cup, has been contributing to the side with both bat and ball. However, his numbers with the bat since the 2019 World Cup have been relatively poor as Chopra explains&nbsp;in deep.

<h2>Jadeja’s key concern</h2>

“Ravindra Jadeja's numbers have been worrisome since the 2019 World Cup. A deep dive into his performance to see what numbers have to tell... or do numbers lie?” Chopra wrote on his X handle.

Jadeja has been a key member of the Indian squad for the last few years and contributes as a vital all-rounder option. However, the drop in strike rate since the 2019 ODI World Cup has led to worries ahead of the upcoming edition. The left-handed all-rounder had a strike rate of 84.2 before the 2019 ODI World Cup, but it has since dropped to 79.4, raising question marks on his batting approach.

However, it is worth reminding that Jadeja played a crucial knock with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) final for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He scored 10 runs on the final two balls of the season to clinch a record-equalling fifth IPL title for CSK in May.

On the flip side, Jadeja’s average with the bat has slightly improved as he now averages 39.4, more than what it was before the 2019 ODI World Cup. He averaged 31.9 before the 2019 showpiece and will look to continue the impressive stat.

<h2>India’s upcoming schedule</h2>

India will start their ODI World Cup campaign against Australia on Sunday, October 8 in Chennai while they will face the same opposition in a three-match ODI series, starting on Friday, October 22. The Indian team will face a near-fully fit Australian side led by returning skipper Pat Cummins, while the likes of Mitchell Starc and Steve Smith will also be in the frame having not played in the recently concluded South Africa tour.

THIS key stat of Ravindra Jadeja worries former player Aakash Chopra before ODI World Cup

Rohit Sharma-led India thrashed Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup 2023 final, on Sunday (September 17), in Colombo to win their eighth title in the continental tournament history. With this, India are preparing well for the upcoming home ODI World Cup. Before the mega event kicks off on October 5 in Ahmedabad, India, former Pakistan great Wasim Akram has named the player who can be India's main weapon in the 50-over marquee event.

<h2>'Hardik Pandya is India's main weapon'</h2>

Akram was quoted as saying to Star Sports, "He (Hardik Pandya) is their main weapon in the upcoming World Cup and India are one of the favourite teams to win it. For starters, they are playing at home and we have seen what they can do with the ball."

To back the Pakistan great's claim, Hardik does provide a good balance to the Indian side.

With him bowling very well (he ended with six scalps in Asia Cup 2023) and being India's crisis man lower down the order, his performance will be very crucial to India's chances in the 50-over World Cup.

Further, Akram opined on India's overall run in Asia Cup and how nicely the squad is building up for the World Cup at home.

“Kuldeep got wickets as well against the big sides in the Asia Cup. So, it’s a complete side. So, well done to the Indian think tank, which has been supporting these boys and making sure that they have the proper squad before the World Cup,” he added.

India will now shift focus on the three-match ODI series versus Australia at home, which begins on September 22 (Friday) in IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.

After the series, India will play two warm-up games before their CWC 2023 opener, versus Australia in Chennai on October 8.&nbsp;

Not Kohli or Bumrah! Pak great Wasim Akram names who will be Rohit-led India's main weapon in CWC 2023

India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup final on Sunday (September 17) in Colombo to clinch their eighth title in the tournament history. Rohit Sharma-led India were asked to bowl first and rode on Mohammed Siraj's 6 for 21 to dismiss the islanders for 50 in 15.2 overs before chasing down the paltry total in 6.1 overs.

During their entire campaign, Team India were tested on several grounds before coming to their own in the summit clash. There were a lot of individual brilliance throughout the tournament for the Men in Blue, with the likes of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Rohit, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav doing well.

Talking about Ravindra Jadeja, the spin-bowling all-rounder also claimed six wickets but didn't do anything significant with the bat.&nbsp;

Ahead of the India-Australia home ODIs, which kicks off on Friday (September 22) in Mohali followed by CWC 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir opined that Jadeja will have to come good with the bat in the upcoming 50-over mega event.

Speaking to Star Sports, Gambhir -- the 2011 ODI World Cup winner -- said, "If Ishan Kishan plays at No. 5, there are question marks there as well. So Ravindra Jadeja will have to win matches with his batting ability because you might have a situation where you need 80 or 90 runs in 10 overs and the No. 6 and No. 7 batters might be playing together."

"Ravindra Jadeja has the ability but it is still debatable against top-quality bowling. The way he has contributed, no doubt he will fit in any playing XI, but India will be happy if Ravindra Jadeja is seen in good hitting form. There is a massive difference between good batting form and good hitting form," Gambhir further added.

Gambhir stressed that the ability to form partnerships down the order was something which was missing for India during Asia Cup 2023. Jadeja only managed&nbsp;25 runs in three innings in the just-concluded continental tournament. Thus, he will be looking forward to the India-Australia ODIs to get some runs under his belt before the&nbsp;World Cup gets underway.

After the Australia home ODIs, India will play two warm-up games -- on September 30 and October 03 -- before their CWC 2023 campaign gets off the mark on October 08, where they play Australia in Chennai. The World Cup commences on October 05 with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in Ahmedabad.

He will have to win matches with his batting ability: Gambhir wants Jadeja the batter to stand tall in CWC '23

Former ODI World Cup winner Piyush Chawla is in awe of Kuldeep Yadav after the left-arm spinner scalped four wickets in a narrow win against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2023 contest. Kuldeep, who will be a key member of the Indian ODI World Cup squad, was picked ahead of Yuzvendra Chahal for the tournament. According to Chawla, he has no fear of getting dropped as he is enjoying the form of his life.

<h2>Chawla in awe of Kuldeep</h2>

“Sometimes you have that fear of failure. Because you think if I don't get the wickets then I might not play the next game. So once that fear is out of your mind, you try to get more attacking and you're not scared of getting hit, and in that process, you end up getting up more wickets,” said Chawla while speaking on Star Sports.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed a stellar 24 hours since Monday evening as he picked five wickets against Pakistan followed by four against Sri Lanka on Tuesday. He was instrumental in India’s success on the flat tracks of Colombo and will be expected to perform at the same heights during the World Cup in India next month.

He along with Jadeja picked six wickets on Tuesday as there were encouraging signs for the duo after Sri Lankan spinners scalped all of India’s 10 wickets. The spin-friendly environment in Colombo could play a key role as India bid for their seventh Asia Cup title.

Asia Cup 2023: Ravindra Jadeja leapfrogs Irfan Pathan in THIS tally after narrow win vs Sri Lanka

During the rain break of the India-Pakistan Super 4 Asia Cup clash, on Sunday (September 10), former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar stated that Indian all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are not in the same league as Yuvraj Singh. Manjrekar's statements came following former Pakistan speedster Waqar Younis' words of praise for Hardik and Jadeja.&nbsp;

"Look at what Hardik and Jadeja bring to the table. They are well equipped with both bat and ball. Especially Hardik Pandya - the way he batted against Pakistan - I think he is a really destructive batter at No. 6. Any team would love to have someone like him. He is aggressive, and now as we saw in the previous match, he is very sensitive and smart," Younis told Star Sports.

In response, Manjrekar stated that Yuvraj was on another level, referring to him as "India's best white-ball batter". In this regard, he commented, "Yuvraj is arguably India's best white-ball batter. He could win games and was in a different league. Hardik and Jadeja, with due respect, aren't quite there. These two are far better bowlers than Yuvraj Singh, but because of that, one discipline was so disciplined."

Talking about Yuvraj, he ended as one of India's finest white-ball cricketers, ending with over 8,500 ODI runs and was a key player in India's victorious campaigns in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup.

To this, the Pakistani intervened and asked, "Not even Hardik Pandya? With the kind of batting that he has shown? I am not comparing them but the intention is there."

Manjrekar replied by saying, "He has the potential but when I see him at this stage, it's not a guarantee that he will come and bowl all 10 overs like one of the mainstream bowlers. I see him as more of a batting all-rounder and he batted really well in the last game," Manjrekar said.

"So yes, they have this combined skill to make the kind of contribution made but one discipline of Yuvraj Singh, like I said, was at a different level. In pitches that help Jadeja the bowler, his batting will come through but Hardik the batter doesn't need a bad ball or loose ball to decide that this needs to go."

Both Hardik and Jadeja are an integral part of the Indian white-ball teams. The duo's form will be essential for India in the upcoming ODI World Cup, which kicks off in India on October 05. As of now, both have contributed to India in the ongoing rain-hit Asia Cup. Hardik top-scored for India in their group stage clash versus Pakistan (scoring an impressive 87) whereas Jadeja was India's top wicket-taker in their face-off versus Nepal (returning with 3 for 40).&nbsp;

After their tournament-opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan ended with rain having the final say&nbsp;on Saturday (September 02) in Kandy, Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with Nepal in their final group stage game of Asia Cup 2023 on Monday (September 04). In another rain-marred contest, in Pallekele, Kandy, India were stretched with the ball&nbsp;by the inexperienced Nepal -- in what was both sides' first-ever international face-off -- but eventually won by ten wickets (DLS method).

With the convincing win, Rohit &amp; Co. have entered the Super Four of the continental tournament, along with Pakistan from their group (Group A). In their first game of the next round, they will once again lock horns with the Men in Green on September 10. The venue is likely to be switched from Colombo to Hambantota due to the rain forecast.&nbsp;

Talking about Monday's contest, India opted to bowl first. While the bowlers produced enough chances, India were sloppy and dropped three catches in the powerplays to give Nepal a good start. Openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kushal Bhurtel (38) stitched an impressive 65-run opening stand. Riding on Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja's breakthroughs, India reduced Nepal to 144 for 6 but handy runs from Gulsan Jha (23), Dipendra Singh (29) and Sompal Kami (48) propelled Nepal to 230 all-out in 48.2 overs.&nbsp;

India's run-chase began with a lengthy rain break. At that time, they were 17 for no loss in 2.1 overs before&nbsp;rain made its presence felt once again. After a long delay, the revised target was 145 in 23 overs. After the break, Nepal continued to make it tight for India but Shubman Gill started the counterattack before Rohit came to his elements, targetting the experienced Sandeep Lamicchanne, Sompal, and Dipendra.&nbsp;

Rohit-Gill used their experience to dent Nepal's hopes in a jiffy. Hitman, who attained a special feat of over 250-plus sixes as an opener (252*), remained unbeaten on 74* whereas Gill ended with a sublime 67* to stitch an unbroken 147-run stand in 20.1 overs. India's top-order was tested against Pakistan pacers&nbsp;but Rohit-Gill will be feeling much better after their dominant show versus Nepal.

Asia Cup: India beat spirited Nepal in rain-marred clash to enter Super Four, to face Pakistan on Sep 10

Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that India can't do without Ravindra Jadeja at ICC ODI World Cup. The former batter, however, said that it won't be fair to compare Jadeja to Yuvraj Singh. Notably, Singh had played a pivotal role when India last won the ICC World Cup in 2011 and had won Player of the Series award.

"There is a very good chance, it’s almost a certainty that he will play all the World Cup matches. India can’t do without him. Axar Patel will be there in the reserves but Jadeja will be the first-choice spin-bowling all-rounder. If the pitch is rough, if you have got a quality opposition, he will finish in 10 overs," Manjrekar told Star Sports.

“But the batting all-rounder we had in 2011, Yuvraj Singh. It's not fair to compare his batting with Jadeja. So I see him more as a bowling all-rounder with somebody who can be a threat at No. 7 or No.8. His white-ball career has changed completely in the last few years,” said Manjrekar.

Manjrekar, who once called Jadeja a 'bits-and-pieces' cricketer, said that in the last few seasons the left-arm spinner has been bowling his 10 overs in limited overs which shows how 'good a bowler' he is.

"Earlier, he was a formidable Test bowler. In the early part of his one-day career, he wasn't even completing his 10 overs. But in the last few seasons, you see him bowling his 10 overs. That's a best indicator of how good a bowler you are. All you have to do is see how many times you bowl your 10 overs. That's something that you get with Jadeja now. He is a much-improved white-ball cricketer, which he was not 3- years before that," Manjrekar added.

Jadeja has been included in the 15-man squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on September 5. Axar Patel also features in the side alongside Jadeja.

'Ravindra Jadeja no Yuvraj but India can't do without him at ODI world cup,' says Sanjay Manjrekar

Ravindra Jadeja added another feather to his illustrious hat during India's group stage face-off with Nepal in match 5 of Asia Cup 2023, on Monday (September 04) in Kandy. After India's opening game versus Pakistan&nbsp;was washed out due to rain, they have now locked horns with the lowly-ranked and inexperienced Nepal where Jadeja ended with 3 for 40 in his ten overs after India opted to bowl first.&nbsp;

With three key wickets, Jadeja equalled former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan to become India's joint-most successful bowler in Asia Cup ODIs. Both the all-rounders have 22 wickets apiece and 34-year-old Jadeja will certainly look to add to his tally in the Super Four, should India proceed further with a win over Nepal on Monday evening.

Most wickets for India in Asia Cup ODIs

Ravindra Jadeja: 22 in 15 innings (24.5 Avg)*
Irfan Pathan: 22 in 12 innings (27.5 Avg)
Sachin Tendulkar: 17 in 15 innings (21.4 Avg)
Kapil Dev: 15 in 7 innings (13 Avg)

Jadeja removed the likes of Bhim Shirki, captain Rohit Paudel and Kushal Malla to dent Nepal's innings after they were off to a fine start courtesy of openers Aasif Sheikh (58) and Kusal Bhurtel (38). Jaddu ended as India's best bowler of the evening whereas Mohammed Siraj also accounted for 3 for 61.&nbsp;

For India, they have a task in hand to chase down 231 versus Nepal, who played fearlessly to put on a decent total on the board. The former ODI champions need a win to enter the Super Four, where they will then lock horns with Pakistan on September 10 (Sunday) in Colombo.

Ind vs Nep: Ravindra Jadeja equals Irfan Pathan to become India's leading wicket-taker in Asia Cup ODIs

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. After all, the last three editions have been won by the hosts. India, under MS Dhoni, started this trend in 2011 when the cricket-crazy country co-hosted the ODI World Cup (ODI WC) along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Back then, the Men in Blue trounced Sri Lanka in the summit clash by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai to lift the title.

Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni &amp; Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue.&nbsp;

Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up.&nbsp;

Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming&nbsp;World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit?&nbsp;

<h2>MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION</h2>

In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So, in case, if Shreyas Iyer is ruled out, in the present scenario, one guy who fits the bill is Tilak Varma, because of his versatility, because of his ability to play fast bowling and spin bowling and also because of his ability to switch the gears as and when required. More than anything else, we don't have a left-hander at the top of the order. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma."

On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7."

Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial."

<h2>WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES</h2>

Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and&nbsp;also be a handy part-time bowler). Just like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Prithvi Shaw, Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, etc., the 20-year-old Varma will also be a part of the national setup post the CWC '23 with India nearing a massive transition (with the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, etc. in the twilight of their careers). However, his inclusion in the ODI setup with regard to the upcoming world event makes little to no sense. The Mumbai Indians (MI) star just has a handful of matches under his belt in the gruelling international circuit. While his start is surely promising, although in the shortest format, ODIs is a different ball game altogether. Look at Suryakumar. He is a T20I giant, however, admits to his woeful ODI returns (averaging a poor 24.33 in 26 games).

During the WI T20Is, Surya admitted to his 50-over woes and said, "We've played so much T20 cricket now, that we have become habituated to it. We don't play as much one-day cricket anymore. That's one of the most challenging formats for me, because you need to have different gears." He added, "If I'm honest, I know my numbers in one-day cricket are quite poor. There is no shame in admitting that. We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it."

Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough&nbsp;to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni&nbsp;said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games."

Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly.&nbsp;

Surely, Varma has an edge being a left-hander. However, India can always promote Ravindra Jadeja -- whose batting stokes are on the rise since 2018 -- in the 50-over showpiece event and, thus, not change their team combination drastically. Moreover, they also have Kishan who can bat at No. 4. Nonetheless, bringing Varma out of nowhere can jolt India's preparations. They have a rich pool of players but with the CWC '23 less than 60 days away, they cannot keep expanding their options. They have to shortlist a few and identify their No. 4 if Iyer, or even Rahul, continue to miss out due to injury concerns.

Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed&nbsp;India's&nbsp;struggle to book their No. 4 slot. He said, "Look, No. 4 has been an issue for us for a long time. After Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), nobody has come and settled themselves in. But, for a long period of time, Shreyas (Iyer) has actually batted at No. 4 and he has done well - his numbers are really good. Unfortunately, injuries have given him a bit of trouble; he has been out for a while and that is honestly what has happened in the last 4-5 years. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there."

On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period."

"That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined.

There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019.

The ICC ODI World Cup 2023 (CWC '23) edition is not even two months away. The mega event will be held in India and, thus, Rohit Sharma & Co. are one of the favourites to lift the coveted title. Will Rohit-led Men in Blue replicate Dhoni & Co.'s heroics? Well, India do have the arsenal but still lag behind in many areas. The No. 4 spot continues to be a worry, which proved to be India's Achilles heel in the 2019 edition as well. It became a musical chair with no confirmed taker. This time around, the situation is pretty much the same. The injury to Shreyas Iyer is, however, the main reason for India's No. 4 spot still being a persistent issue. Since injuries to Iyer and KL Rahul, who bats at No. 5, India have tried to give a consistent run to Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav. Nonetheless, the trio haven't cemented the spot. During the ongoing India-West Indies T20Is, another candidate's name sprung up. Tilak Varma, who is yet to make an ODI debut, recently wore his first-ever international cap during the WI T20Is. Since then, he has returned with scores of 39, 51, 41 and 7*. The left-hander has played the situation with aplomb, displayed a steady approach and carried out his innings with utmost responsibility and purpose. Thus, many former cricketers have backed him to become India's No. 4 in the upcoming World Cup. But should Team India give up on their back-ups and bring in a youngster as a wildcard entry if Iyer and Rahul remain unfit? MANY BACKING TILAK VARMA AS AN OPTION In an interaction with news agency PTI, former Indian chief selector MSK Prasad said, "First of all, we should know whether Shreyas Iyer is fit or not. So all these things will definitely go in favour of Tilak Varma." On his YouTube channel, R Ashwin stated, "This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7." Ashwin added, "And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England has Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial." Also read: India couldn't perform in ICC tournaments due to internal issues, claims former Pakistan captain WHY INDIA SHOULD NOT GO THE 2019 WAY AND SHOULD AVOID PAST MISTAKES Without a doubt, Varma is one for the future (who can play varied roles with the bat and also be a handy part-time bowler). We talk about honesty, you need to be honest but it's even more important how you work and improve on it." Varma's T20I career has started in an identical fashion with that to his idol Suresh Raina (debut at 20, both taking two catches each in maiden outing, first-ever T20I fifty in losing cause). However, he hasn't even stepped into the ODI fore, a format ruled by his childhood hero. India's legendary captain MS Dhoni repeatedly emphasised on the need for players to be experienced enough to counter the pressure attached to a mega event. Back in August 2008, Dhoni said, "You have to give everyone enough chances, not just a few games." Moreover, India have paid the price for regular shuffles in the batting order during their preparations in the last World Cup. We all remember how Ambati Rayudu's name was missing from the final 15 with Vijay Shankar -- having played only nine ODIs -- getting the nod. In addition, when Shankar got injured during the marquee tournament, India backed an exciting young talent like Pant to fill in the No. 4 spot rather than relying on the experienced Rayudu (who occupied the No. 4 spot for majority of 2018). What followed was a messed-up chase in the CWC '19 semi-final where India failed in pursuit of 240, versus eventual runners-up New Zealand, by shuffling the batting order cluelessly. Recently, during an event, Rohit addressed India's struggle to book their No. A lot of these guys have got injured and you will always see a new guy coming and playing there." On Varma, Hitman stated, "He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing." The 36-year old pointed out, "In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period." "That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India," he further opined. There is some time before India finalise their Asia Cup squad, which will also give a major hint of their CWC '23 unit. It will be wise on their part if they go with a limited pool rather than just needlessly expanding it, pushing towards a downfall as experienced in 2019. Explained | Why it is too late to consider Tilak Varma for India's No. 4 spot for CWC '23

Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Rohit Sharma-led India is the most balanced side at home. Hussain feels the Indian team outperforms every visiting line-up in the purest format of the game due to their perfect blend of youth and experience while playing in home conditions. It is to be noted that the Indian team has not lost a Test series on home soil since late 2012, when they lost 1-2 to England in four Tests.

<h2>'The balance of their side at home is just wonderful'</h2>

Speaking on the ICC Review, Hussain said, "They are brilliant at home...and the balance of their side at home is just wonderful. They've got senior players like Rohit and obviously Virat (Kohli) and they are just world class players and they've got youngsters coming in, like Shubman (Gill), who's going to be a superstar."

Hussain further opined that the Indian team will become a more formidable unit once Jasprit Bumrah achieves full fitness. The wily Indian speedster has been out of cricketing action since September 2022. He is set to make his much-awaited national comeback during India's three T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, later this month.

In this regard, Hussain concluded, "If Jasprit (Bumrah) can come back as well, one of the great multi-format bowlers there is at the moment, if not the best, when fit. So, they've got those senior players and youngsters, and with the ball in India, those three all-rounders, and they are genuine all rounders in India - Axar (Patel), (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin. That, for me, is a really balanced side because then you've got a No.7."

At present, India hold the No. 1 spot in ICC Test Rankings. They featured in the WTC final in both the cycles, since its inception in late 2019, but failed to lift the coveted Test mace, having lost the summit clash to New Zealand and Australia, respectively.

Currently, India are preparing hard for the forthcoming ODI World Cup, to be held in India in October-November. Their next Test assignment will be post the ODI WC, i.e. a two-match Test series versus hosts South Africa in December.

India most balanced Test side at home: Former England captain Nasser Hussain lauds Rohit Sharma & Co.

India are set to face West Indies in the third and final ODI in Trinidad on Tuesday (August 01). With the series levelled at 1-1, there is everything to play for the Rohit Sharma-led visitors as they continue to prepare for the forthcoming World Cup at home, which starts on October 05. Ahead of the final ODI, former India captain Kapil Dev made a glaring remark when he stated that the current Indian players are 'arrogant' and feel they know it all due to their big pay cheques.

In an interview with The Week, Kapil reacted to an old statement from his former teammate Sunil Gavaskar, where the Little Master revealed that&nbsp;the current Indian players have never called him up for help despite going through rough patches, unlike yesteryear superstars such as Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Rahul Dravid, etc.

To this, Kapil opined, "Sometimes, when too much money comes, arrogance comes. These cricketers, they feel they know everything. That's the difference. I would say there are so many cricketers who need help. When Sunil Gavaskar is there, why can't you talk? Why should there be ego? They feel they are good enough. Maybe they are good enough, but extra help from somebody, who has seen 50 seasons of cricket, won't hurt. He knows which side the grass grows and where the sun comes out from."

<h2>'Such questions crop up when....'</h2>

Now, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has reacted to all such claims. In a press conference ahead of the final ODI versus the Windies, Jadeja said, "I didn't know when he said this. I don't search too many things on social media. Everyone has their own opinion. It's nothing like that. Everybody is enjoying their game and working hard. Players are not taking their place in the team for granted. Whenever they are getting chances, they are giving their 100 per cent and trying to win games for India."

"Such questions crop up when India loses a game. Nobody is arrogant. Everybody is representing India. We are working hard and playing for the country. There is no personal agenda," Jadeja added.

Talking about the ODI series opener, Rohit-led India won by five wickets in pursuit of 115 before the Men in Blue rested Rohit and Virat Kohli in the following ODI. Hardik Pandya led the side as the second-stringed Indian team lost by six wickets, in defence of 181. The series is up for grabs and India will be desperate to not concede the series to a team that is not even going to participate in the upcoming 50-over World Cup.

'Players are not...': Ravindra Jadeja reacts to Kapil Dev's claim of current Indian players being arrogant

Rohit Sharma-led India beat West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three ODIs, being held in the Caribbean island. With the 2023 ODI World Cup set to be held in October-November, in India, Rohit &amp; Co. are now left with&nbsp;only a handful of ODIs in the run-up to the mega event at home. Thus, the series versus the lowly-ranked West Indies is crucial in their preparations.&nbsp;

The Men in Blue stood tall and dominated proceedings in the first ODI, dismissing the Windies for a paltry 114 after opting to bowl first, and chased down the score in 22.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 led the show for India before Ishan Kishan's 52 and unbeaten cameos from Jadeja-Rohit took India past the finish line.&nbsp;

During the run-chase, India shuffled their batting order as Ishan opened with Shubman Gill whereas Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Jadeja were also promoted. India's two experienced campaigners such as Virat Kohli and Rohit were demoted&nbsp;and Hitman explained the reason behind the move.&nbsp;

<h2>'We will keep trying these things whenever possible'</h2>

At the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed, "We wanted to give game time to the ODI guys who have come in, we will keep trying those things whenever possible. To restrict them to 115, we knew we could try these guys and give them a go. I don't think they'll get many chances like this."

Rohit came out to bat at No. 7 whereas Kohli didn't feature in the run-chase. On him batting at No. 7, the Indian captain pointed out, "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days."

With Rohit and Kohli experienced enough, India is focusing on giving their middle and lower-order batters enough chances -- wherever available -- in the run-up to the ODI WC, which starts on October 05. While only Ishan (52) made full use of batting at the top, India will be happy with other middle and lower-order batters also being exposed in the middle. They will hope for more such chances where they can&nbsp;experiment&nbsp;in the upcoming ODIs.

The second and penultimate ODI kicks off on Saturday (July 29) as Rohit &amp; Co. will hope to claim&nbsp;an unassailable lead.

IND vs WI: Rohit Sharma explains why India shuffled their batting line-up in 1st ODI amid WC preparations

Ishan Kishan’s fourth ODI fifty and Kuldeep Yadav’s four-for helped India beat West Indies by five wickets in the first ODI in Barbados on Thursday. In a contest that could be dubbed one-sided despite India losing five wickets in a chase of just 115, seamer Mukesh Kumar made his ODI debut. While Kishan was picked over Sanju Samson for the keeper’s role, indicating what the team’s plan looks like in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Hardik Pandya - returning to the India side for the first time since IPL 2023 final, bowled with the new ball and picked the big wicket of Kyle Mayers on two. Brendon King and Alick Athanaze stitched a 38-run stand before debutant Mukesh and Shardul Thakur dismissed both in the space of four balls.

Seasoned campaigners Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer tried saving the sinking ship but fell prey to the spin-bowling duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. After West Indies got reduced to 96 for five at one stage, it was about time before Kuldeep tore into their tail to return with figures of 4 for 6, while Jadeja picked three wickets for 37 runs.

For the hosts, Shai Hope was their highest-scorer, hitting 43 off 45 balls.

Meanwhile, India, for a change, didn’t send their regular openers in captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill and instead sent two off-field besties, Kishan and Gill. While Gill departed on seven after a shaky start, the new number three for this game, Suryakumar Yadav, came out to bat ahead of Virat Kohli.

The T20 specialist thumped a few boundaries but got out on 19, plumb in front of left-armer Gudakesh Motie. Pandya departed soon as Kishan completed his fourth ODI fifty, bringing India closer to the win.

The attacking batter became Motie’s second scalp of the day, while Yannic Cariah picked Thakur on just one to reduce India to 97 for five at one stage.

Rohit, perhaps for the first time in ODIs, came to bat at number seven and, with Jadeja (16 off 21), helped India win the match with five wickets in hand.

With this, India won their second of the three matches on Caribbean soil on this tour.&nbsp;

The second One-Dayer will be played at the same venue on Saturday, July 29.

With this, India won their second of the three matches on Caribbean soil on this tour. The second One-Dayer will be played at the same venue on Saturday, July 29. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

WI vs IND, 1st ODI: Ishan Kishan, Kuldeep Yadav help India draw first blood, beat West Indies by five wickets

Former India and CSK batsman Ambati Rayudu has quashed rumours of a possible rift between Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja during the 2022 season. Jadeja was named skipper of CSK in 2022 but after a spate of losses, Dhoni took over the reins mid-season. There were rumours of Jadeja not being very happy about it but Rayudu has a different thought&nbsp;on the matter. &nbsp;

"I don't think Jaddu (Jadeja) was upset with Mahi bhai at all. It was just that he was sad because the team wasn't doing great. Everyone's performances that year were not coming up to the mark," Rayudu said on BehindWoodsTV Youtube channel. Notably, CSK had finished second last on the points table in the 2022 season.

Rayudu, who retired from all IPL after the 2023 IPL season, also said that it was MS Dhoni who nurtured Jadeja for 10-12 years.&nbsp;

"He (Dhoni) has put this team and has made Jaddu (Jadeja) what he is today. He has nurtured him for what, 10-12 years. So he would naturally be happy that the product that he made has won the final for CSK after whatever happened last year," said Rayudu.

Jadeja won the 2023 IPL trophy for CSK in a dramatic manner after hitting two boundaries on the last two balls of the final. It was CSK's fifth IP trophy - taking them on par with Mumbai Indians for most IPL titles.

As for the CSK, speculations have been ripe with who is going lead the side when Dhoni retires. The 42-year-old wicketkeeper is speculated to have retired after the end of this season. Dhoni, however, made no such announcements after the end of IPL.

Nonetheless, the Jadeja experiment as the captain of the side didn't work out as the franchise would have wanted and the team might look at some other options in the future. A few names which have come forward as Dhoni's potential successor are opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane as well.

Ex-CSK batter Ambati Rayudu opens up on alleged Ravindra Jadeja-MS Dhoni 2022 rift

R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been a highly successful bowling pair for India in the purest format of the game. They have given sleepless nights to every Test team touring India whereas the duo have also enjoyed bowling in the subcontinent and&nbsp;had some success overseas (especially in the Caribbean island). On Day Four of the second and final Test in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, Ashwin and Jadeja achieved a massive feat by becoming only the second Indian pair to have 500, or more, wickets.&nbsp;

Ashwin and Jadeja got to the feat during the final session on Day Four, on Sunday (July 23), when the former claimed two breakthroughs in West Indies' stiff 365-run chase in the series decider. Thus, Ashwin and Jadeja joined Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the 500-wicket club as a pair.&nbsp;

India vs West Indies 1st Test: Ravindra Jadeja makes umpire wait while fixing hair

The first Test between India and West Indies kicked off on Wednesday, July 12 in Dominica. The hosts had won the toss and elected to bat but after the first session, India were on top with four wickets. It was Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin who got India its first breakthrough with the wicket of Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Ashwin, notably, made a comeback in playing XI after being dropped for WTC Final against Australia last month.

The last of four wickets was picked up Ashwin's spin partner Ravi Jadeja, who dismissed Jermaine Blackwood at the stroke of lunch on day 1. The dismissal, however, was completed with a stunning catch by fast bowler Mohammed Siraj. Blackwood, who was batting at 14 off 34 balls, tried playing a lofted shot over mid-off and almost got through with it before Siraj plucked the ball out of thin air. Have a look at the wicket here:
