The way she smiles, the way she locks her parents in the storeroom - that was added in the Hindi film- not part of the original.&nbsp;The scene where I am sitting on top of the gas cylinder was an addition to the Hindi film. That chunk is not there in the Gujarati film," pointed out the actress.&nbsp;<br />

<strong>Eating biscuits and getting a sugar rush for a scene</strong><br />

A scene in <em>Shaitaan</em> involved Madhavan's character commanding Janaki to eat up an entire packet of raw tea leaves. Janaki revealed that the packet had Oreo biscuit crumbs in it.&nbsp;<br />

"In <em>Vash</em>, the tea packet was filled with Oreo in the top layer but had tea leaves in the bottom. Because of multiple takes, I did eat a lot of the tea leaves. In Shaitaan, however, the box was filled with biscuit crumbs and by the end of it- I had a major sugar rush.</p>

She did find the physical action in the film difficult. "One has to be cautious that no one gets hurt while you are performing. But I was lucky- both while filming Gujarati and Hindi film- that my co-actors were supportive, they told me that that it is part of your job, even if we get hurt - don't worry, just do your job. If you have to show aggression on screen, do it- so that it looks authentic," she added.&nbsp;<br />

Also, the subsequent sequence where Jyothika ma'am comes and changes my shorts was very aesthetically shot. It was such a delicate scene but so well written. Shaitaan Box Office: Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan's film eyes Rs 50 crore collection

<p>Never judge a book by its cover, and never judge a film by its trailer. Filmmaker Vikas Bahl's latest,&nbsp;<em>Shaitaan</em>'s first trailer had got the audience curious. The film's casting- Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan and Jyothika- the premise, the thrilling elements shown in the trailer- all made <em>Shaitaan </em>look very interesting. But does it match up to the expectations? Only partially.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The story is simple. Based on the Gujarati film<em> Vash,</em> Shaitaan has Ajay Devgn playing Kabir who takes his family to their vacation home outside the city. On their way to the farmhouse, during a tea break at a local dhaba, they meet Vanraj (R Madhavan) -an over-friendly man who befriends the family of four over a cup of tea. Vanraj is particularly interested in talking to Kabir's teenage daughter Janvi (Janki Bodiwala) who seems too enamoured by the man in no time.<br />
<br />
Kabir and his wife Jyoti (Jyothika) do not suspect anything until hours later Vanraj ends up entering their sprawling farmhouse on the pretext of getting his phone charged. He doesn't leave and soon enough the family realises that he has hypnotised Janvi to an extent that she is now following every instruction of his to the T. She first hurts her younger brother Dhruv (Anngad Raj), slaps her father, and is also ready to stab her mother- all on Vanraj's instructions, who casually lies on their plush couch and plays a sinister game of controlling the family.&nbsp;<br />

At one point Kabir- a doting father- tells his daughter that he would find her from any corner of the earth if need be. But deep into the night as Vanraj creates mayhem, he is compelled to think if sacrificing his darling daughter to Vanraj might be a better idea- just to save his young, bleeding son and his wife.&nbsp;<br />

I wish the writing was sharp. The characters are well-written. Especially Madhavan, who plays his baddie act with such nonchalance that you understand how it's easy to be friends with someone so charming. He casually instructs a hypnotised Janvi to kill her family. He smiles and threatens the family with dire consequences if they don't listen to him and give their daughter to him.&nbsp;</p>

Complementing him in every scene is actress Janki Bodiwala who reprises her role as Janvi after playing it in the original Guajarati film. Janvi is aware of the ill deeds she is doing but is helpless. Janki's dialogues are limited but the young actress uses physical expression to deliver a stunning act. As the possessed Janvi, Janki manages to give you the creeps.&nbsp;<br />

Ajay Devgn, meanwhile, plays the helpless father with much restraint. Considering he is the producer of the film and is known to play the larger-than-life hero in most films, you expect him to outwit Madhavan's character easily but the plot limits his reactions. Jyothika emotes through her eyes and delivers the role of a mother who doesn't want to give up the fight that easily.&nbsp;<br />

Only partially. The story is simple. Based on the Gujarati film Vash, Shaitaan has Ajay Devgn playing Kabir who takes his family to their vacation home outside the city. On their way to the farmhouse, during a tea break at a local dhaba, they meet Vanraj (R Madhavan) -an over-friendly man who befriends the family of four over a cup of tea. Vanraj is particularly interested in talking to Kabir's teenage daughter Janvi (Janki Bodiwala) who seems too enamoured by the man in no time. Kabir and his wife Jyoti (Jyothika) do not suspect anything until hours later Vanraj ends up entering their sprawling farmhouse on the pretext of getting his phone charged. He doesn't leave and soon enough the family realises that he has hypnotised Janvi to an extent that she is now following every instruction of his to the T. She first hurts her younger brother Dhruv (Anngad Raj), slaps her father, and is also ready to stab her mother- all on Vanraj's instructions, who casually lies on their plush couch and plays a sinister game of controlling the family. At one point Kabir- a doting father- tells his daughter that he would find her from any corner of the earth if need be. But deep into the night as Vanraj creates mayhem, he is compelled to think if sacrificing his darling daughter to Vanraj might be a better idea- just to save his young, bleeding son and his wife. Shaitaan's screenplay by Aamil Keeyan Khan helps to create the perfect premise for the psychological horror film. In the first half, when Vanraj intrudes and stays at the farmhouse, Kabir and Jyoti's realisation of how Janvi is under Vanraj's control and a crucial scene where the cops come calling- are tense and keep you on the edge of your seat. The writing is gripping and it is well executed on screen. But the writing dips horribly in the second half. Post interval, some of the scenes are individually great but when they are stitched together, they don't make the narrative edgy. The last half an hour of the 132-minute-long film seems so outlandish and stretched that it completely spoils the otherwise gripping first half of the film. I wish the writing was sharp. The characters are well-written. Especially Madhavan, who plays his baddie act with such nonchalance that you understand how it's easy to be friends with someone so charming. He casually instructs a hypnotised Janvi to kill her family. He smiles and threatens the family with dire consequences if they don't listen to him and give their daughter to him. Complementing him in every scene is actress Janki Bodiwala who reprises her role as Janvi after playing it in the original Guajarati film. Janvi is aware of the ill deeds she is doing but is helpless. Janki's dialogues are limited but the young actress uses physical expression to deliver a stunning act. As the possessed Janvi, Janki manages to give you the creeps. Ajay Devgn, meanwhile, plays the helpless father with much restraint. Considering he is the producer of the film and is known to play the larger-than-life hero in most films, you expect him to outwit Madhavan's character easily but the plot limits his reactions. Jyothika emotes through her eyes and delivers the role of a mother who doesn't want to give up the fight that easily. Shaitaan starts on a high but ends with a whimper. <p>Former Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) scientist Nambi Narayanan has opened up regarding the criticism from reviewers who targeted his Hindu identity shown in the movie ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect', based on his life. A video has gone viral on the realms of social media where Nambi Narayanan can be seen explaining his point and asking if it was a sin to be a Hindu.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is funny sometimes. You know somebody wrote a review saying that Nambi Narayanan is shown as Hindu. Nambi Narayanan is doing some Utsavam, reciting Suprabhatam, this, that, and all kinds of things. He is a 'Brahmin'. He is a Hindu. Hindutva is being shown. I just wanted to ask you, I am a Hindu. I mean I have no shame in saying that. Is it a sin to be a Hindu?” said Nambi in the video.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nambi further argued that he is a Hindu and thus, the movie showed him as a Hindu only as it could not have shown him as a Muslim or Christian. He further asserted that he was not a Brahmin, and even if he was, why would people want to cut them(Brahmin) off.</p>

<p>"Is it a sin to be a Brahmin? I am not a Brahmin, that is a different question. Is it a sin? If there is a Brahmin fellow, you will just cut him short. There are so many Brahmins, who have given their lives for this country. Not just one. I can give you a list. So the point I am making is we are unnecessarily coloring the issue.”</p>

<p>The ISRO scientist, who was wrongfully terminated from his service reiterated that he had no political inclinations toward any party. Thus, anyone drumming his name for the sake of politics should not try to go that avenue. Nambi also noted that he received praises from both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who are at the opposite ends of the political spectrum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I will tell you. Forget about Narendra Modi. Do you know that the present chief minister of Kerala has given me excellent support? In what way his support is less? He has cut down on the fighting of my case. So you will call me a communist fellow?”</p>

<p>Lauding the strong Indo-French ties, Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra has said that France has always been India's "trusted and preferred partner". The key comments come even as both countries have been seen expanding ties from people-to-people relations to the defence sector.</p>

<p>Speaking at the French National Day or Bastille Day at the French embassy in New Delhi, Kwatra said, "For India, France has always been a trusted partner, a preferred partner in our efforts to find solutions to not to cooperate in the bilateral sphere but also to the problems of the modern world, such as climate change, biodiversity protection, and counter-terrorism."</p>

<p>Notably, on climate change, it was in Paris in 2015 that International Solar Alliance was launched by Indian PM Narendra Modi and the then French President Francois Hollande. The grouping, which today has over 85 members aims to harness solar energy. On counter-terror front, it was France that has supported India's bid to list many Pakistani-based terrorists at the United Nations Security Council.</p>

<p>The foreign secretary highlighted that both countries are "best of partners" and have "shared values".</p>

<p>He said, "Values of liberty, equality and fraternity form the basis of the French Republic ideas and with every successive republic, now the 5th one, these have become engrained in the French national identity. At the same time, the Indian civilization and the heritage has been the fountainhead of democratic values and behaviour for the entire mankind"</p>

<p>Indian Prime Minister Modi earlier this year visited France during his three European nation tour. He was the first world leader to meet President Macron in Paris post his election victory. It is expected that the French President will visit Delhi, as early as by the end of this year.</p>

<p>FS Kwatra pointed out that "France was one of our earliest partners on our road to development and today we are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic ties this year. In recent years, our people-to-people contacts have increased through tourism, migration of high skilled professionals and other movement of professionals in the society."</p>

<p>French Development Agency (AFD) committed over Rs 20,000crores to India in 2021 according to French data. In India, AFD is lending its support to public entities in a variety of sectors, such as clean urban transit, water, affordable housing, renewable energy and biodiversity. So far, it has helped finance five metro rail projects in India with a contribution of 1,142 million euros or Rs 9,250 crores to date.</p>

<p>French Ambassador Emmanuel Lenain on the occasion explained how his country has become a destination for Indian students.</p>

<p>He said, "We say it again that Indian students are very welcomed to France, we have currently almost 10,000 and we expect a lot more in coming years.”</p>

<p>He also mentioned defence partnership saying, "It has been 75 years or so of outstanding cooperation between our 2 countries with amazing results, especially in the defence sector. Very proud now that the rafale is flying in the skies of India." France has delivered all the contracted 36 Rafales to India, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. On the national day, the French embassy had also invited popular Indian actor R Madhavan.</p>

We are told ISRO has successfully sent its first satellite to Mars and Khan sits down with Narayanan to reminiscence on the years of struggle that ISRO went through before it tasted success.<br />
The film then travels back in time and showcases Narayanan's zeal to dream big and achieve the impossible. From securing a seat in the PhD programme at Princeton but not in his preferred choice of subject, to convincing his dream professor to teach him and eventually landing a job at NASA within a year only to refuse it to join back his mentor Dr Vikram Sarabhai to help him with India's space program at ISRO- Narayanan was a true patriot and a go-getter who made the impossible possible.&nbsp;<br />

The film also subtly highlights how the scientist put the interest of his country first before anything else. Some called him mad, some brash and selfish, but Narayanan was focused to make India a pioneer in space programmes.</p>

Madhavan's film instead is science-heavy- full of technical terms which demand your attention lest you lose track of what the protagonists are talking about. I watched the Hindi version which is spruced with English dialogues owing to a sizeable non-Indian cast. The film naturally, then, caters to a niche audience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the worldwide theatrical release having happened and enthusiasm soaring over his magnum opus 'Rocketry: The Nambi Effect' (which he has scripted, directed, acted in and produced), Indian actor R Madhavan is a relieved man. After having waited two-and-a-half years, during the pandemic to get a theatrical release, the actor also went on a whirlwind world tour to promote the film. During an exclusive conversation, WION asked Madhavan about what he would be doing next.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As you can see from my face, what next is - two months of sleep, three months of just taking it easy and hoping that I make my money back and buy myself a house... thereafter I'll decide what to do with my career" Madhavan had told WION. Recalling the magnitude and grandeur of this project, Madhavan called it "a maniacal journey and insanity". Anybody in their right mind will never venture into a project like this, it doesn't make financial sense or logistical sense, he said about having to film in eight countries and to do so simultaneously in three languages. "I remember being possessed by Nambi sir's story and felt angry that he is not known in our country, and that is a national disservice, that is why I made the film" Madhavan told WION.</p>

Looking back, Madhavan revealed that Nambi Narayanan(who was in his late seventies at the time of project commencement) and his family, never expected that a film would be made on his life. After seeing the film, Nambi sir said, "I've seen more things than most men will see in their lives. I've seen most things that most men should not see in their lives and I thought I've seen everything. And now I've seen this movie now!" Madhavan revealed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hearing such a touching response from the highly-accomplished rocket scientist(now aged 80), Madhavan asked him if he really meant what he was saying or if there was an iota of a lie in it. Nambi sir told me what he said was all true, and added "I want to thank you for giving me the desire to live a little longer to see the outcome of this film and enjoy its fruits," Madhavan told WION, referring to this as the biggest compliment he had received.&nbsp;</p>

Following the Cannes premiere, two-time Oscar award winner music director AR Rahman had praised Madhavan for "bringing a new voice to Indian cinema". During an exclusive conversation with Madhavan, WION asked the actor about the feedback he received from Nambi Narayanan, on whose life the film is based. Looking back, Madhavan revealed that Nambi Narayanan(who was in his late seventies at the time of project commencement) and his family, never expected that a film would be made on his life. After seeing the film, Nambi sir said, "I've seen more things than most men will see in their lives. I've seen most things that most men should not see in their lives and I thought I've seen everything. And now I've seen this movie now!" Madhavan revealed. Hearing such a touching response from the highly-accomplished rocket scientist(now aged 80), Madhavan asked him if he really meant what he was saying or if there was an iota of a lie in it.
