First-look poster of Prabhas for Project K out; take a look

<p>In the wake of the ongoing strike by the Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (SAG-AFTRA) in the US, Indian actress Deepika Padukone has opted out of the launch event of her upcoming film <em>Project K </em>at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). Deepika is a member of SAG-AFTRA and will be missing the comic con as a member of the union. <em>Project K</em>'s first glimpse will be unveiled by the film's leading man Prabhas at the San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday along with actor-producer Rana Daggubati.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Deepika Padukone's tryst with Hollywood</strong></h2>

<p>Many would recall that Deepika Padukone made her Hollywood debut with <em>XXX: Return of Xander Cage </em>opposite Vin Diesel in 2017. Earlier this year at the 95th Academy Awards, Deepika had introduced <em>Naatu Naatu, </em>the Best Original Song Oscar-winner from SS Rajamouli's blockbuster <em>RRR.</em> Deepika is also a global ambassador of several fashion brands including Louis Vuitton.&nbsp;</p>

Confirmed! Kamal Haasan joins Project K starring Prabhas, Deepika and Amitabh Bachchan

<p><em>Adipurush</em>, directed by Om Raut, has generated a firestorm of controversy and public outrage. It is an adaptation of the epic Ramayana and features <em>Baahubali</em> star Prabhas in the role of Rama and Kriti Sanon in the role of Sita, respectively. Saif Ali Khan essays the role of demon king Ravana. Also starring Sunny Singh, Devdatta Nage, Vatsal Sheth, Sonal Chauhan, and others, it was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu to maximise its chances at the box office. Despite a humongous budget, the collections have been tepid and the studio will most likely lose money. And it does not look like word-of-mouth will be of any help. The dialogues, visual effects, and costumes have ignited a lot of criticism, with fans calling some of the lines indecent and objectionable.</p>

<p>In an exclusive interview, actor Aashiesh Sharrma, who portrayed Rama on the small screen in<em> Siya Ke Ram</em> series, shared his thoughts on <em>Adipurusha</em>, expressing disappointment regarding the film. Here are some edited excerpts.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Q. What are your thoughts on <em>Adipurush </em>and its portrayal of Rama? What specifically did you find disappointing or objectionable?</strong></h2>

<p>Where do I start? I was really excited initially because I thought our cinema is waking up to our scriptures. We've been so ignorant of our own scriptures for a long time. And finally, it seemed we are waking up. You go in with that kind of expectation, and then you see something like that and then it really disappoints from an audience point of view. And also from an actor's and an artists'&nbsp;point of view, it is even more disappointing. The film lacks intent and research. It is a lazy attempt at making Ramayana and it's like you've made it out of WhatsApp forwards. You're trying to play to the gallery and it shows in the content. It's like just trying to cash in on to the Hindu wave in the nation right now.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If one sets out to make something like this in India, it comes with a huge responsibility — not as a maker, but as a conscious citizen. Because cinema and literature are two mediums that educate a generation, even the subsequent 10 generations. And if you're claiming that we are making it for Gen Z, then the responsibility is even bigger. You cannot distort history and facts. You have to be very, very authentic and honest in your depiction so that they can watch and learn from it. If you are distorting our history then it becomes a cultural crime for me.</p>

<h2><strong>Q. As somebody who has played Rama, what qualities do you believe are essential to capture the essence of the character?</strong></h2>

<p>The basic things are humility and honesty. All that [Ram's qualities] are mentioned in popular fiction too, that he was truthful and genuine. So if you are not clear there, it becomes very difficult to portray Rama. What we used to do to play Rama, we did not impose our thoughts on Ram. <p>I think our filmmakers are suffering from an inferiority complex. We have a colonised mindset. We feel shame in depicting our culture, our society the way it is and the way it has been. Rather than taking pride in it, we try to ape the Western style of filmmaking. I understand they are much more advanced in technology. So take the technology, use the resources, but tell an Indian story! Do not tell a Westernised version of an Indian story Very few of our filmmakers have a truly India-rooted outlook towards our own culture and society. We do not make such brains right now. So it's really difficult to see authentic stuff right now.</p>

<p>There cannot be a retelling of things, there can only be inspired versions of them. Now, our scriptures, our epics... they are written in a way that they will inspire 10,000 things in you. That is the beauty of them. When we read them my interpretation will be different from yours. They force you to find yourself. I tell you what, every depiction of a hero or heroin, or a villain ever in Indian cinema is inspired by either Ramayana or Mahabharata. They all have emerged from these stories. We look to our heroes for the same qualities that Ram or Krishna had.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So you make whatever you want to make! Who's stopping you? But when we have set out to make a depiction of an epic, it has to be true to the events described, history, and context. If I am making Ramayana, I have to get things right. If I do not do that, I am rewriting history and nobody has given me the right. We are not Tulsidas or Valmiki to recreate Ramayana. That is where the line should be drawn.</p>

<p>I think two things one is the sheer imagination of the fact that how the battle would have gone. There are things to see in those scenes. Then Saif's acting, his screen presence. He has done work on himself and it reflects on screen. He's brought some nuances here and there and he really captures the screen.</p>

You go in with that kind of expectation, and then you see something like that and then it really disappoints from an audience point of view. And also from an actor's and an artists' point of view, it is even more disappointing. The film lacks intent and research. It is a lazy attempt at making Ramayana and it's like you've made it out of WhatsApp forwards. You're trying to play to the gallery and it shows in the content. It's like just trying to cash in on to the Hindu wave in the nation right now. If one sets out to make something like this in India, it comes with a huge responsibility — not as a maker, but as a conscious citizen. Because cinema and literature are two mediums that educate a generation, even the subsequent 10 generations. And if you're claiming that we are making it for Gen Z, then the responsibility is even bigger. You cannot distort history and facts. You have to be very, very authentic and honest in your depiction so that they can watch and learn from it. If you are distorting our history then it becomes a cultural crime for me. Q. As somebody who has played Rama, what qualities do you believe are essential to capture the essence of the character? The basic things are humility and honesty. All that [Ram's qualities] are mentioned in popular fiction too, that he was truthful and genuine. So if you are not clear there, it becomes very difficult to portray Rama. Adipurush box office collection: Film witnesses major slump on day 7

<p>On Thursday, a Nepal court lifted the ban on Hindi films that was imposed earlier this week after the release of <em>Adipurush. </em>While filmmaker Om Raut's <em>Adipurush</em> can now be screened in theatres across Nepal, the Kathmandu Mayor has reportedly vowed to stop the film's screening in the country.<br />

The court has directed authorities across the country to allow the seamless screening of all Hindi films that have been cleared by the censor board, including <em>Adipurush</em>. However, Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah has said he is ready to face punishment but will not let <em>Adipurush</em> screen in theatres across Nepal. He said that the matter has a lot to do with “Nepal’s sovereignty and independence” which he cannot let down.&nbsp;<br />

Adipurush makers to alter dialogues in the movie after backlash: 'Nothing is beyond the sentiments'

<p>Filmmaker Om Raut's highly anticipated <em>Adipurush</em> has been in the news ever since the film's first look came out in 2022. There have been debates, discussions and controversies around the film's casting and implementation of the epic on the big screen. <em>Adipurush</em> is based on Valmiki's Ramayan, an epic that almost all Indians have grown up reading, watching, or listening to. This is why it becomes difficult to adapt such a well-known story (and exhaustive) into a three-hour film. Does it do justice? Read on to find out.</p>

<p>The story is a known one and Raut, who also serves as the writer of the film, starts off the film where Raghav (Prabhas), Janaki (Kriti Sanon), and Shesh (Sunny Singh) are living in exile. The story also has Lankesh (Saif Ali Khan) who abducts Janaki after his sister Surpanakha faces insult at the hands of Shesh and Raghav. How Raghav and Shesh along with loyal aide Bajrang (Devdatta Nage) and an army of monkeys to wage a war against Lankesh to bring back Janaki forms the rest of the story.</p>

<p>If you set aside the fact that the story is a well-known one and one that you have seen being adapted on screen before, Raut's <em>Adipurush</em> delivers a visual extravaganza. Especially the introduction scene of Lankesh and Raghav. Some may find the depiction of Raavan, aka Lankesh, outlandish, but Raut's interpretation of the antagonist seems interesting.</p>

<p>Experimenting with the characters of Ram and Sita is risky in today's time. After all, they are considered sacred in India and given godly status. And so Raut takes copious amounts of artistic liberty to reinvent the character of Raavan. The result is GOT's Khal Drogo-meets-Bhansali's Khilji-esque Raavan. With the help of CGI, which helps Khan appear double his size, Lankesh sports a grunge look with a spike hairdo and blue eyes. He is always dressed in black leather and sports a menacing look on his face. His choice of transport is a creature who is a cross between a dragon and Pterodactyl. In fact, Raut borrows heavily from pop culture.</p>

<p>In Prabhas' intro scene, he fights skeletal-faced flying creatures which remind you of dementors from <em>Harry Potter. Adipurush</em> carries plenty of references from&nbsp;<em>Game of Thrones,</em> <em>Harry Potter,</em> and even <em>The Flash.</em></p>

<p>Despite a very CGI-enabled premise, the first half is a stretch and you are impatient to move to the actual battle scene. It serves well in the second half and is implemented in an elaborate manner and that's when Adipurush really shines and becomes a visual spectacle.</p>

<p><strong>The makers also play to the gallery. You know that some of the lines have been written to draw in cheers and claps in the film theatres. Some of the dialogues include-&nbsp;"<em>Jo hamari behno ko hath lagayenge, unki lanka laga denge”</em> (We will burn down homes if you trouble our sisters)," "<em>Kapda tere baap ka, tel tere baap ka, jalegi bhi tere baap ki,</em>"(will burn down father's kingdom and ego)&nbsp;"<em>Tu Jaanta hai mera baap kaun hai? (You know who's my father?)</em>"&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Since it has so much VFX,&nbsp;I did feel it limited the scope of performance for the actors. Prabhas looks his part&nbsp;and has limited dialogues, but looms large throughout the film. Similarly, Sanon looks stunning as Sita yet hardly has much scope to act considering her limited screen time and dialogues. Sunny Singh as Laxman has his moments and so does Devdatta Nage as Bajrang.</p>

<p>Vatsal Seth as Indrajit shows spark in his role but the film easily has Saif Ali Khan stealing the show with his evil act as Lankesh. His character is the most fleshed out and Khan doesn't disappoint with his interpretation.</p>

Adipurush review: Ramayana gets a VFX makeover

<p>Prabhas starrer mythological drama <em>Adipurush</em> has been one of the most talked-about projects ever since its announcement. After a long delay, Om&nbsp;Raut's directorial debut was finally released in theatres today (June 16). The movie features&nbsp;Prabhas as Raghav, Kriti Sanon as Janaki, Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh, Sunny Singh as Shesh, and Devdutta Nage as Hanuman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last year, the first teaser of the movie was released, and it faced a huge backlash over its poor VFX and CGI work and the way they presented the deities in the movie. After delaying the movie by six months, the epic drama has been released in theatres, and it seems like the scenario has not changed at all.</p>
