Why did Indian PM Modi scold Canadian PM Trudeau on the sidelines of the G20 summit?

On the fringes of the successful G20 Summit held in New Delhi, an ambitious rail-port economic corridor agreement was struck to connect India, the Middle East, and Europe. This arrangement is considered as an alternative supply chain path in a completely changed post-pandemic world order, putting emphasis on railway infrastructure.

PM Modi says India has 'unwavering faith' in Brazil for next G20 presidency, holds talks with President Lula

India, which has remained a vocal advocate for reforming global organisations, walked the talk by setting an example at the Group of 20 forum. The summit has turned out to be a strong reflection of India's rising stature on the global stage, with some experts saying only India could have achieved this wholesome consensus. India, which shares cordial ties with both the West and Russia, has rightfully leveraged its unique status for the global good. Here are key takeaways from the New Delhi G20 Summit.

America’s two main geopolitical foes, China and Russia, stayed home as the world’s wealthiest countries met this week for the G20 summit in New Delhi — a point that Biden administration officials have been happy to emphasize.

G20 Summit 2023 | Putin calls PM Modi's G20 a success

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday (September 10) unequivocally asserted that "any initiative that isolates Russia is bound to fail". He was speaking at news conference in New Delhi during the G20 Summit. Turkey is widely perceived to posses a political capital with respect to Russia. Turkey even mediated between Ukraine and Russia to strike the Black Sea grain deal and continues to play significant part in developments surrounding it.

On Sunday, Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, the president of Egypt, and Recep Tayyip Erdoan, the president of Turkey, met in New Delhi, the capital of India, to discuss bilateral issues and energy cooperation. The Turkish Presidency stated in a written statement that the discussion covered regional and international concerns as well as Turkey-Egypt relations, boosting commerce, new energy cooperation, and other topics.

Adroit diplomacy, the leverage provided by long-standing goodwill, IOUs and personal relationships, and straightforward messaging of what the or-else option would involve — these were some of the levers India pulled to achieve a consensus on the historic Delhi Declaration of the G20, which was announced just a few hours after the leaders’ summit started on the morning of Saturday September 9, on Day 1 of the two-day meet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday proposed a virtual session of the G-20 around the end of November to take stock of the suggestions and decisions made at the leaders’ summit that concluded on September 10. In his concluding remarks at the final session of the two-day G-20 summit in New Delhi, Modi noted that India’s presidency of G-20 would officially continue till November 30 and over two-and-half months were left for its tenure as the head of the grouping.

After the detention of a parliamentary researcher on suspicion of espionage for Beijing, Rishi Sunak questioned China's premier over his nation's "unacceptable" intervention in British democracy. India’s presidency ‘most ambitious’ in history of G20, says PM Narendra Modi

India is hosting the G20 Summit on Saturday (September 9) and Sunday. A controversy emerged in the run-up to the summit when Indian President Droupadi Murmu sent invites for the dinner on the sidelines of the summit by calling herself "President of Bharat." This stirred speculation that the government may be about to change the country's name. This possible change of name triggered a squabble between opposition parties and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi began addressing the G20 member states in New Delhi. The desk where he was sitting had the nameplate Bharat instead of India.
