Torrential rains across Pakistan's north have caused flooding and landslides that have swept away entire villages, leaving many residents trapped in the rubble and scores missing.

Rescuers and residents resumed searching on Tuesday for survivors as the death toll from five days of torrential rain rose to almost 400, with authorities warning monsoon downpours would continue until the weekend. Torrential rains across Pakistan's north have caused flooding and landslides that have swept away entire villages, leaving many residents trapped in the rubble and scores missing. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said 356 people were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a mountainous province in Pakistan's northwest bordering Afghanistan, since Thursday evening. Dozens more were killed in surrounding regions, taking the toll in the past five days to almost 400. Rescuers dug through mud and stone in hard-hit Dalori village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the hope of finding survivors and the bodies of people missing. Villagers stood watching and praying as the rescuers worked, a day after the search was halted by more intense rain. Umar Islam, a 31-year-old labourer, struggled to hold back his tears as he spoke about his father, who was killed on Monday. "Our misery is beyond explanation," Islam told AFP as neighbours tried to console him. "In a matter of minutes, we lost everything we had," he said. "Our lives are ruined." Fazal Akbar, 37, another villager, described the aftermath of the floods as "terrifying". "It happened so suddenly that no one even had a minute to react. Announcements were made from the mosque, and villagers rushed to begin the rescue themselves," said Akbar. "In less than 20 minutes, our village was reduced to ruins." More rain Many roads have been damaged, making it hard for rescuers to reach areas damaged by the floods. Communication also remains difficult, with phone networks hit in flood-affected areas. Heavy rain also began falling on Tuesday in southern parts of Pakistan that had so far been spared the worst of the monsoon downpours. The rain was expected to continue until Saturday, and "another spell is to start by the end of the month", said NDMA chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik. More than 700 people have been killed in the monsoon rains since June 26, the NDMA said, with close to 1,000 injured. The monsoon is expected to last until mid-September. Authorities also warned of urban flooding in big cities in coastal areas of Sindh province, including the financial capital Karachi, "due to weak infrastructure". It has also been raining in 15 districts in neighbouring Balochistan province, and the main highway connecting it with Sindh has been blocked for heavy vehicles, said provincial disaster official Muhammad Younis. Between 40 and 50 houses had been damaged in two districts, he said. Landslides and flash floods are common during the monsoon season, which typically begins in June and lasts until the end of September. Pakistan is among the world's most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change and is increasingly facing extreme weather events. Monsoon floods submerged one-third of Pakistan in 2022, resulting in approximately 1,700 deaths. China launched Pakistan's Remote Sensing Satellite (PRSS-01) into its present orbit on Thursday, July 31, aboard a Kuaizhou‑1A (KZ‑1A) rocket from its Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in Sichuan. The satellite successfully reached its planned orbit just minutes after its launch. Pakistan's Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), in collaboration with Indonesia-based Microsat China and state-owned China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC), has achieved this feat. The satellite is supposed to enhance Pakistan's capability to respond to natural disasters. It also marks another milestone in the ever-enhancing cooperation in aerospace technology between China and Pakistan. However, questions will be raised in New Delhi as Pakistan's enhanced imaging capacity with the help of China is a security threat to India.
Possible uses of PRSS-01
It is Pakistan's fourth Earth observational satellite under the URAAN programme. It will be able to produce high-resolution images that will be used in vital tasks like disaster management, such as floods, landslides, and glacier melt; agricultural monitoring, deforestation tracking, and climate resilience planning; urban infrastructure, land-use surveys, and transportation mapping. This satellite is expected to bring the environmental monitoring capacity of Pakistan close to the level of developed nations. Before PRSS-01, Pakistan had other satellites like Badr Satellite Series (Badr-A, Badr-B) for low Earth orbit, PakTES-1A.
Why PRSS-01 should concern India
Even though touted for civilian utility, PRSS-01 has the capability to capture high-resolution images from approximately 1 m or better. Earlier, Pakistan had installed the PakTES-1A, which had very low-resolution images from 2.5-5 meters. This makes PRSS-01 a significant improvement, making it detailed enough for surveillance of military bases, radar installations, troops and vehicle movement. Even though no clear definition of a data sharing agreement between China and Pakistan is reported, but being built and launched using Chinese infrastructure, China might possibly retain the visuals from the satellite. Thus, making sensitive regions like Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Arunachal Pradesh more vulnerable.India does possess better satellite capabilities with a plethora of options like RISAT series, Cartosat Series, EMISAT, GSAT & GSAT-7 Series, and Hyperspectral & Infrared imaging instruments. Some of these are dedicated to strategic and border monitoring. Thus making it capable of day/night, all weather, ultra high resolution monitoring. Pakistan's recent satellite is a step towards bridging the technological divide. However, with improved technology, Pakistan is less reliant on commercial satellites like Maxar to produce images for regions within India. So it indeed is a security concern for India.

In the Pakistani city of Kasur, a video of a grown man molesting a young girl in public is causing widespread outrage. The city in the Punjab province is infamous for being the epicentre of child abuse cases in the recent past, including a series of rape-murders of underage girls and a child porn ring.
What happened with young girl in Kasur?
The video that went viral since Monday (July 28) appeared to show a man approaching a young girl who was on a tricycle, and then molesting her and walking off. The man was later arrested by the Punjab police after an encounter during which he tried to open fire and was shot at.“The suspect had molested a little girl playing in a street in Shah Inayat Colony three days ago,” Dawn newspaper cited a police statement as saying. https://www.wionews.com/videos/shocking-rise-in-ai-produced-child-abuse-material-768803/embed
Kasur in Pakistan is infamous for child rape-murders, porn ring
The video has brought back memories of horrific cases of child abuse from Kasur that had led to widespread outrage, massive protests and a new law. In 2015, Kasur hit headlines for a child pornography ring that had some 280 underage victims. Then there was the shocking murder of Zainab Amin Ansari in January 2018. Zainab was only seven years old when a man abducted her while she was going to a Quran recitation class. The culprit, 24-year-old Imran Ali, was a serial offender who carried out at least seven previous rapes and murders of young children. He was hanged in the same year. The outrage in Pakistan over the murder led to the passage of the country's first law on child safety, called the Zainab Alert Bill.
Pakistani netizens react with horror at Kasur child abuse redux
Several Pakistani netizens reacted with disgust and horror at the video that circulated since Monday. “The video from Kasur leaves no room for the tired excuse ‘not all men.’ This predatory behaviour is sickening. If there’s no self-accountability, the state must do its part to make an example out of such predators,” Dawn quoted a netizen as saying on social media.“Another horrifying case from Kasur… This is the same city where 6-year-old Zainab was brutally assaulted. Why do such vile crimes keep happening there?” another social media user said.
Call for more action
People called attention to the lack of a child offender registry in Pakistan, and low rates of prosecution in abuse cases. As per a 2023 report, more than 4,200 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in Pakistan in one year alone, which works out to 12 cases each day.

If there’s no self-accountability, the state must do its part to make an example out of such predators,” Dawn quoted a netizen as saying on social media. “Another horrifying case from Kasur… This is the same city where 6-year-old Zainab was brutally assaulted. Why do such vile crimes keep happening there?” another social media user said. Call for more action People called attention to the lack of a child offender registry in Pakistan, and low rates of prosecution in abuse cases. As per a 2023 report, more than 4,200 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in Pakistan in one year alone, which works out to 12 cases each day.

The video has brought back memories of horrific cases of child abuse from Kasur. In 2015, Kasur hit headlines for a child pornography ring that had some 280 underage victims. Then there was the shocking murder of Zainab Amin Ansari

Pakistan's foreign minister, Ishaq Dar, during his conversation with the United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, said that his country has no issues with The Resistance Front (TRF) being designated as a terrorist organisation. However, Dar added Pakistan would only take action against the group if there is evidence of their being involved in terror activity. He also shockingly stated that linking TRF with Hafiz Saeed-led Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) is wrong. Notably, the statement by Dar comes even after TRF's own admission of the Pahalgam terror attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir in April this year that killed 26 civilians. “It is obviously a sovereign decision of the United States to designate the TRF. The actors were prosecuted, arrested and jailed, and the entire outfit was destroyed,” said Dar at an event in Washington DC.

US designates TRF as a terrorist organisation
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that TRF would be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), and would face financial sanctions, restricting its access to support from individuals and entities under American jurisdiction. India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar welcomed the US decision and termed the move strong affirmation of India-US counter-terrorism cooperation. "TRF, a Lashkar-e-Taiba front and proxy, claimed responsibility for the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack which killed 26 civilians. TRF has also claimed responsibility for several attacks against Indian security forces, including most recently in 2024," the State Department said.

A video of the murder of a couple in the southwestern province of Balochistan by a group of men has gone viral on social media. Pakistani authorities have arrested at least 13 individuals, including a tribal leader, in what is being called a case of honour killing. In the video, the couple surrounded by men in the mountainous terrain of Balochistan are seen forced out of a vehicle at gunpoint. They are then shot dead at close range. As per reports, the man and the woman were having an affair, which led to an alleged honour killing by members of their families and the tribe. Police are investigating the matter and a local court has ordered that the bodies be exhumed for autopsy.
What is in the video and what the FIR says?
According to The Guardian, the people in the video speak in the local Brahavi language. The woman is handed a copy of the Qur’an. Then the woman says to the man, “Come, walk seven steps with me, after that you can shoot me.” He follows her for a few steps before she adds, “You are allowed only to shoot me. Nothing more than that.” The meaning of her final statement remains unclear. The man then raises a pistol as she turns her back to him and shoots her dead. The video then cuts to a bloodied man lying near the woman’s body. Several men are seen shooting at the couple’s bloodied bodies as they lie motionless. The first information report(FIR) in the case identifies the man as Ehsan Ullah and the woman as Bano Bibi. Some reports also claimed that they were married and their relationship came into the public eye in May this year. The undated video is said to be from May. WION cannot independently verify the authenticity of the video. As per the FIR, the couple was allegedly brought before local tribal leader Sardar Sherbaz Khan, who declared them guilty of engaging in an “immoral relationship” and ordered that they be killed.
What Balochistan police and CM said about the case?
Balochistan police official Syed Suboor Agha told media that they are investigating the matter and are likely to make more arrests, including Bano’s brother, who is suspected of the murders and “is still at large”. “The police have identified a number of people in the video,” provincial police chief Mozzam Jah Anssri added. Meanwhile, Balochistan’s chief minister, Sarfaraz Bugti, said the tribal council had accused the victims of having an illicit affair. Bugti added that both the man and the woman were married to other people and had several children from those marriages, contradicting earlier reports that they had recently married each other against their families’ wishes.
Honour killings in Pakistan
Cases of honour killings have increased in Pakistan, specially in the past two years. According to Sustainable Social Development Organisation (SSDO), an Islamabad-based independent organisation, more than 32,000 cases of gender-based violence were reported nationwide in 2024, including 547 instances of “honour killings” – 32 of them in Balochistan and only one resulting in a conviction. Rights activist Sammi Deen Baloch, also a member of a Baloch women’s rights group, said killing of women has become “a matter of routine” in the province. “In Balochistan, women are murdered for love, disappeared for protest, and buried under layers of tribal authority and state-backed silence. These are not isolated tragedies. They are the cost of a system designed to keep Balochistan obedient, and its women expendable,” Al Jazeera quoted her saying.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has openly defended ‘The Resistance Front’ (TRF) - which was recently designated a terror outfit by the United States. Speaking at the Pakistani parliament, Dar repeated that due to Pakistan's intervention, TRF's mention from the UNSC statement for the Pahalgam terror attack was removed. He further said that Pakistan does not consider the TRF illegal and asked for proof that it carried out the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. "We opposed the mention of TRF in the UNSC statement. I got calls from global capitals, but Pakistan will not accept," Dar said. "TRF was deleted, and Pakistan prevailed." "We don't consider TRF illegal. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that TRF would be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), and would face financial sanctions, restricting its access to support from individuals and entities under American jurisdiction. "On behalf of Pakistan, I had two objections [to the statement]. First, only Pahalgam was mentioned and secondly, the blame was put on The Resistance Forum," Dar said. "I thought this was not acceptable. You have to write Jammu and Kashmir along with Pahalgam." He added, " I gave clear instructions to our ambassador at the UN to ensure the amendments are made," he said. According to Dar, the process to finalise the statement took 2.5 days as Pakistan refused to accept the initial draft. "I received phone calls from big capitals to come to a consensus on the draft, but I told them nothing doing," he said. Ultimately, Pakistan’s objections were reflected in the final press statement issued by the UNSC.
UNSC statement that Dar spoke about
The UNSC condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam, underlining the need to hold the perpetrators, organisers and the sponsors of "this reprehensible act of terrorism" accountable and bring them to justice. "The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on April 22, during which at least 26 people were killed and many more injured," it said in the press statement. The 15 members reiterated that any acts of terrorism were criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. They reaffirmed the need for all States to combat, by all means, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and other obligations under international law, including international human rights law, international refugee law and international humanitarian law, threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.

In a saga that could only unfold in Pakistan, parrot sellers have suffered collateral damage after a journalist’s critique of the government. Pakistan's Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has reportedly frozen the bank accounts of independent journalist Asad Ali Toor, his family, and several bird sellers nationwide, all over transactions linked to the sale of parrots. The crackdown has raised fresh concerns over the misuse of financial tools to silence dissent.
Accounts Frozen Over Parrot Transactions
The issue first surfaced in April when Rozi Khan, a 29-year-old bird seller from Karachi, discovered his bank account had been closed following an FIA directive dated April 10, as reported by Pakistani newspaper, The Friday Times. Khan was on a business trip to Islamabad and, after completing a routine sale, was met with 'Invalid bank account' at an ATM. “I sell birds to all sorts of people,” he said. “I had no idea that selling parrots to a journalist could lead to this.” The investigation appeared to centre on Khan’s business with Asad Ali Toor, a prominent YouTuber and government critic with over 3,35,000 subscribers. Toor, known for his sharp commentary on the government and military, also collects rare parrots and spends more than Rs. 50,000 monthly on their care. Without any formal charges, the FIA froze the accounts of Toor, his parents, brother, cousin and multiple bird sellers across cities including Lahore, Sargodha and Rawalpindi.
No Explanation, Only Questions
Another bird seller, Nadeem Nasir, a 60-year-old businessman from Lahore, learned his account had been shut after a cheque bounced. When he managed to speak to FIA officials, he was questioned about his connection to Toor. “The last time he purchased parrots from me was in 2023 and early 2024,” Nasir told the Pakistani newspaper. “Since then, there has been no business transaction between us.” Toor himself said he only discovered the crackdown after his cousin’s account was frozen. “It’s not just about me. Even people who sold me birds are being punished. It’s absurd,” he said.
Crackdown on Critics
This incident follows Toor’s previous troubles with authorities, including an arrest in February 2024 for allegedly running a 'malicious campaign' against the state, and an earlier assault in 2021. In May, the Islamabad High Court ordered Toor’s bank account restored after the FIA failed to justify its actions, submitting only a brief reply citing investigations into alleged “anti-state posts” and possible “money laundering”. As Pakistan tightens its grip on critical voices, even bird sellers find themselves under suspicion.

Accounts Frozen Over Parrot Transactions The issue first surfaced in April when Rozi Khan, a 29-year-old bird seller from Karachi, discovered his bank account had been closed following an FIA directive dated April 10, as reported by Pakistani newspaper, The Friday Times. No Explanation, Only Questions Another bird seller, Nadeem Nasir, a 60-year-old businessman from Lahore, learned his account had been shut after a cheque bounced. Global tech firm Microsoft has ceased operations in Pakistan after 25 years, according to its founding country head. Jawwad Rehman, who launched Microsoft in the country in 2000, revealed the closure on LinkedIn, writing, “Today, I learned that Microsoft is officially closing its operations in Pakistan. The last few remaining employees were formally informed and just like that, an era ends...” The company has not made any formal public statement on the matter. The exit coincides with Microsoft’s global decision to lay off 9,000 employees. However, the shutdown in Pakistan is seen by many as a reflection of deeper economic and political instability in the country. Factors such as a weakening currency, high import barriers on tech, and ongoing political uncertainty have created an inhospitable environment for multinationals. All these made it nearly impossible for a global company like Microsoft to function efficiently.

Strained Ties with India
Pakistan’s bilateral trade with India has sharply declined, falling from USD 3 billion in 2018 to just USD 1.2 billion by 2024. Critical imports, including essential medicines, now face costly delays as they are rerouted through third countries due to strained diplomatic relations. The downturn in trade has further dampened investor confidence, with geopolitical tensions exacerbating an already fragile economic environment.
Former President Links Exit to Regime Change
Former Pakistani President Arif Alvi reacted strongly to the news, calling Microsoft’s decision “a troubling sign for our economic future.” In a detailed post on X (formerly Twitter), Alvi stated, “Pakistan now spirals in a whirlpool of uncertainty. There is increasing joblessness, our talent is migrating abroad, purchasing power has reduced, economic recovery in the ‘awami’ context feels like a distant & elusive dream.” Alvi also recalled his February 2022 meeting with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, where they discussed potential investment in Pakistan. “I asked him directly, ‘Why isn’t Microsoft investing in Pakistan?’ He leaned in, sharing in confidence that he had just spoken with PM Imran Khan and arranged a call between the PM and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.” According to Alvi, Gates said a major announcement was planned within two months. However, “everything went rapidly downhill. Regime change upended those plans.”
Economic Indicators Reflect a Tough Climate
Microsoft’s exit comes at a time when Pakistan’s economy is under severe strain. The trade deficit for FY2024 reached USD 24.4 billion, while foreign exchange reserves fell to just USD 11.5 billion by mid-2025, directly impacting tech imports and investor sentiment.Alvi argued that political dialogue is now essential. “Public opinion, as many know, reflects deep disillusionment with the current arrangement & the electoral process. Yet, a vast majority still believes that dialogue is the only way to navigate this crisis,” he said.Microsoft’s departure marks a significant moment for Pakistan’s tech ecosystem and reflects broader concerns over its economic direction.

Factors such as a weakening currency, high import barriers on tech, and ongoing political uncertainty have created an inhospitable environment for multinationals.

PM Modi's comment on terrorism: Jibe on US?
PM Modi's G7 remark is being viewed as a jibe on United States as it is hosting Pakistani Army chief Munir in the White House. This comes after India gave substantial proof to the world about the involvement of Pakistani Army with terror group in Pakistan after Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Prime Minister strongly condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam in April this year, describing it as an attack on humanity and democratic values. “There should be no place for double standards on terrorism,” he said, urging the global community to adopt a consistent and firm stance against terror networks. “For global peace and prosperity, our thought and policy must be clear — if any country supports terrorism, it will have to pay the price for it. On one hand, we are quick to impose all kinds of sanctions based on our own preferences. On the other hand, countries that openly support terrorism are rewarded,” PM Modi added.
PM Modi and Trump phone call
Earlier today, setting the record straight, PM Modi in a phone call with US President Trump told him that India had never accepted any mediation role between India and Pakistan and there was no discussion on a US-India trade deal during the hostilities. PM Modi also declined Trump's invite for a stop-over visit to Washington DC on his way back from the G7 Summit in Canada, citing his scheduled visit to Croatia on June 18.

Addressing the G7 Outreach Session, PM Modi warned against double standards on terrorism in what is seen as a jibe against United States ahead of Pakistan Asim Munir's luncheon in White House

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with world leaders on Day 2 of the G7 summit in Kananaskis on Wednesday (Jun18) and issued a statement on terrorism - which is being seen as a jibe at the United States. Addressing the G7 Outreach Session, PM Modi warned against double standards on terrorism and called for unified global action. He also said that sanctions are being imposed as per preferences and those promoting terrorism are being rewarded. Prime Minister's Modi remark comes as US President Donald Trump is all set to meet Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir over lunch today. Apart from terrorism, PM Modi emphasised that affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy remains India’s top priority in an increasingly technology-driven world. In a post on X, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted key takeaways from the Prime Minister’s address.
